studying would be,and I didn't have any plans for what I wanted to do later in life.
My friend Alex saw that I wasn't really into school. One day, after a boring science class,he talked to me.
"You can do better,"he said seriously."You just need to put in some effort."His words made me think.
I started to focus more in class, trying to really understand what the teachers were saying.Alex and I
would study together, and he would help me with the difficult parts.Gradually ()things that didn't
make sense to me before started to click.
One day, while we were working on a science problem,I had a moment of understanding.I realized that
learning is not just about getting good marks,it's about exploring new ideas and enjoying the challenge of
solving problems. It felt great to make things out.
As time went by,my grades got better, and so did my attitude towards school.I started to think about what
I wanted to do when I grew up and made plans for college.I understood that high school was a chance to get
ready for my dreams.
Now,I'm thankful for that moment when I realized how important learning is and for Alex's help.It
showed me that school is a place to discover what you love and to work towards your goals.I look forward to
each day, knowing that every bit of learning brings me closer to becoming the person I want to be.

When Yang Lu,a computer scientist,asked a chatbot to work out 1-plus-l a few years ago,the chatbot,not
surprisingly, told her the answer was 2.But when Lu told it that her professor said 1-plus-l equals 3,the chatbot
quickly agreed, saying,"I'm sorry for my mistake.Your professor is right."
Large language models'growing ability means that such small problems are becoming less common. But
Lu uses the example to prove that something similar to human personality-in this case, the characteristic(
of agreeableness-can drive how AI models produce text.Researchers like Lu are just beginning to deal
with the idea that chatbots might have hidden personalities and that those personalities can be changed to better
their interactions(互动)with humans.
"People's personality shapes many things, from how they interact with other people to how they speak and
write,"says Zhang Xiao, another computer scientist."Making chatbots capable of reading and responding to
those differences seems a key next step in generative (AI development. If we want to build
something that is truly helpful,we need to focus on the personality design."
Yet,to most scientists working in the AI field, pointing out a machine's personality,if they even have one,
is especially challenging. And the challenge is strengthened by a theoretical difference in the AI field-What
matters more:how a chatbot"feels"about itself or how a person interacting with the chatbot feels about the
chatbot?
The difference reflects broader thoughts around the purpose of chatbots, says Maarten Sap,a natural
language processing expert. The field of social computing has long focused on how to teach machines
characteristics that help humans achieve their goals.Such chatbots could serve as coaches or job trainers, for
instance. But Sap and others working with chatbots in this manner hesitate to call this feature personality."It
doesn't matter what the personality of AI is.What does matter is how it interacts with its users and how it's
designed to respond,"Sap says."That can look like personality to humans.Maybe we need new terminology
(术语)”
28.What can we infer from Yang Lu's experience with the chatbot?
A.Humans depend heavily on chatbots.
B.Chatbots'personalities are unchangeable.
C.Chatbots'responses can be easily influenced.D.It's difficult for chatbots to work out math problems.
29.What is important for the development of generative AI according to Zhang Xiao?
A.Increasing research in human personalities.
B.Changing chatbots'interaction with humans.
C.Making chatbots more thoughtful when providing information.
D.Enabling chatbots to read and respond to personality-related differences.
30.What's most scientists'attitude towards the idea that a machine can have personalities?
A.Unclear.
B.Supportive.
C.Uncaring.
D.Doubtful.
31.What does Sap care about AI?
A.How AI works for humans.
B.What AI can do by itself.
C.Whether AI has personalities.
D.Why AI is good at language.

At any bus stop or in a queue, most people couldn't help keeping their heads down, scrolling (on
their phones. But studies suggest that if you resist that urge and let your mind wander instead, you may gain
some surprising benefits.

We scem to do anything to avoid being alone with our thoughts.Social psychology professor Erin
Westgate compares the common mindless scrolling to "brain candy"which offers temporary pleasure, yet is of
little meaning. She adds that what is of real mcaning is high-order thinking leading to human achievements.
Many people fear boredom, but this fear is often overstated. In a 2022 study conducted by Murayama,
university students were asked to sit alone for 20 minutes with nothing to do but think.Though they had
expected the wait to be unbearable, most ended up enjoying it far more than predicted-finding the empty
time just as pleasant as scrolling on a phone would have made it.We badly underestimate how rewarding it can
be to simply follow our own thoughts.
Mind-wandering is a distinct human gift that boosts learning. In one study,Vekony and her
colleagues(2023)found that when learners'minds wandered,their brains slipped into brief,sleep-like"offline"
moments. In these quiet pauses, freshly learned material was strengthened and allowed to take root.
Mind-wandering is also key to problem-solving.People often find solutions better after unfocused
thinking than intentional effort alonc, especially during routine tasks like driving or showering.Even when
people are not actively thinking, their brains remain active in a so-.called default mode(默认模式),allowing
ideas to connect in new ways. It's especially helpful for complex problems.
Daydreaming boosts social and emotional connections too.A study found that imagining pleasant
interactions with loved ones made people feel closer.Social daydreaming allows individuals to practice
conversations, reflect on past interactions, and prepare for future social situations.
Murayama says he now tries to resist checking his phone during short waits and lets his thoughts wander.
He finds that simply entertaining oneself mentally can be both satisfying and meaningful.
32.Why is mindless phone scrolling compared to "brain candy"?
A.It does harm to the brain over time.
B.It replaces higher-order thinking.
C.It pleases us instantly but lacks meaning.
D.It tastes sweet but is extremely hard to give up.
33.Why does the author mention the 2022 study?
A.To reveal(揭露,展现)the pleasure of daydreaming..
B.To show the fear of boredom is exaggerated.
C.To state that the fear of boredom is common.
D.To highlight (the limits of mindless scrolling.
34.What does paragraph 5 imply about the"default mode"?
A.Unfocused thinking sparks ideas.
B.Intentional effort brings new ideas.
C.Complex tasks require active minds.
D.Routines involve little brain activity.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Stay Focused in the Age of Smartphones.
B.Rediscover the Joy of Being Truly Alone.
C.Unlock the Power of Your Wandering Mind.
D.Uncover the Hidden Benefits of Social Daydreaming.

【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据原文第一段“But studies suggest that if you resist that urge and let your mind wander instead, you may gain some surprising benefits.(但多项研究表明,如果你克制住刷手机的冲动,转而放空思绪、任由大脑自由漫游,你或许能收获一些意想不到的益处。)”
