Deisha walked back and forth (来回地) as she waited backstage. This would be her most important piano performance yet. At ten years old, she was the 1 performer in the concert.
To prepare well for the performance, she 2 playing her song more than 30 times that week.
However, Deisha was not sure 3 she was ready. She felt so 4 that her hands were shaking. She was worried that the audience would laugh 5 her if she made mistakes while playing. She tried to calm down, 6 her hands only shook more. When Deisha’s name was called, she was unwilling 7 onto the stage.
“I have something for you,” Deisha’s piano teacher, Ms. Neal said gently, pressing a smooth black stone into Deisha’s hand. “This is a special stone 8 can bring you power. There’s no other one like it in the world. You’ve practiced so much that you don’t need anything else.”
The stone shone under the stage lights. “Thank you,” Deisha said.
Deisha rubbed the stone, took 9 deep breath and then stepped onto the stage. She played better than ever. After her performance, she rushed to her teacher and gave her a big hug. At that moment, she noticed that Ms. Neal was carrying a little bag on her arm. The bag was open, and there were several black stones inside. 10 of the stones looked exactly the same as the one in her hand. She was confused and asked, “Why did you say this one was special?”
Her teacher responded, “Because, like your talent, it belongs only to you.”

根据“At ten years old… in the concert.”
laugh at是固定短语,意为“嘲笑”,没有laugh in/on的这类搭配。
be unwilling to do sth.

When the soil dried out, native plants were replanted.

We all desire deep, lasting friendships with other people. Making friends, however, is as simple as it is difficult. Do you find it hard to make new friends? Here is some experts’ advice.
Accept the awkwardness (尴尬)
Heather Havrilesky is an agony aunt She points out that believing other people also need friends is important to making friends. “Many people think that everybody already has his or her friends,” she says. “This is a wrong idea. Nobody already has their friends.”
It is uncomfortable to send the first message or hang out with someone alone for the first time. You have to accept that awkwardness. You can’t have friends without feeling embarrassed.
Spend time on your hobbies
If you ask people how you can make new friends, many of them will tell you to try picking up a hobby. Havrilesky says that this truly works. “Do the things you like, and you will naturally draw people to you,” she says. “You will meet people with the same hobbies.”
You may start with your favorite hobby. If it doesn’t work out, remind yourself that you have many talents. You don’t have to be interested in just one thing.
Care about your friends
If you want to have deep friendships, you have to take care of them. In her book The Art of Showing Up, Rachel Wilkerson Miller shares two tips on strengthening friendships: (1) Take notes. Your notes will help you remember your conversations with your friends. They will offer you points of connection later. (2) Remember the names of people in your friends’ lives. You may ask to see pictures of the people they are talking about. They will help you better remember these people in the future.

Learn from Ancient Travellers’ Spirits
Three world-famous ancient travellers left valuable travel works for later generations: Xu Xiake from China, Marco Polo from Venice and Ibn Battūtah from Morocco. Their travel journals are not only records of scenery, but also precious cultural treasures teaching modern teenagers how to explore the world with patience and careful observation.
Xu Xiake travelled widely all over China for decades. He walked through mountains, rivers and villages, and wrote detailed notes about geography, plants and local customs every single day. No matter what bad weather or difficult roads, he never stopped recording what he saw. His work The Travel Diaries of Xu Xiake helps modern people study ancient Chinese geography and folk culture. Unlike many travellers in his time who only visited famous scenic spots, Xu Xiake preferred small unknown villages to find unique local stories.
Marco Polo travelled to China during Kublai Khan’s rule and served the emperor for many years. After he returned to Venice, he was caught in a war and put into prison. With a writer’s help, he finished The Travels of Marco Polo. This book introduced China’s rich culture and great inventions to European readers, building a cultural bridge between the East and the West. His stories encouraged lots of Western people to travel to Asia to learn new culture.
Ibn Battūtah spent nearly thirty years travelling around forty countries in Africa, Asia and Europe. After he finished all his journeys, he told all his travel experiences to a scholar, who wrote them down into the book Rihlah. His writing focuses on different community cultures and local people’s friendly spirits, especially the warm hospitality of strangers in every country he visited.
History teachers ask students to learn from these three travellers for two main reasons. First, they never gave up travelling and recording even when they met hard difficulties. Second, they respected every local culture they met and were willing to communicate with ordinary villagers instead of only visiting famous buildings. Teachers advise students to keep travel journals and design travel brochures after trips, just like these ancient travellers did hundreds of years ago. These activities help teenagers observe life carefully and form a respectful attitude towards different cultures.

49.What book did Xu Xiake’s travel notes become later?

32.What is the best title for the passage?
A.The Benefits of Having Close Friendships
B.How Experts Help People Make Friends
C.Ways to Start and Keep Friendships
D.Why Hobbies Matter in Our Daily Life
33.According to Heather Havrilesky, many people wrongly believe that ________.
A.everyone already has friends
B.most people are happy with their friends
C.nobody needs friends
D.making friends is easy
34.The underlined word “draw” in the section “Spend time on your hobbies” is closest in meaning to ________.
A.avoid B.attract C.enrich D.surprise
35.In the section “Spend time on your hobbies”, the underlined word “it” refers to ________.
A.your favorite hobby
B.using your favorite hobby to make friends
C.following the expert’s advice
D.trying to find new hobbies
36.According to Rachel Wilkerson Miller, taking notes about your friends can help you ________.
A.remember their important events
B.avoid losing touch with them
C.find topics for future conversations
D.understand their family better

48.How many famous ancient travellers are mentioned in the passage?
49.What book did Xu Xiake’s travel notes become later?
50.Why was Marco Polo put into prison after returning to Venice?
