Before I arrived in Mozambique, I had no idea what to expect from this little-visited country. To be honest, I was feeling on edge, because I had no experience of travelling to nations in Southeast Africa, and taking my first steps into the country may be frightening.
When I researched the journey to Mozambique online, I found few travel bloggers had been to the country and that there were few trip reports about it. Also, a lot of people announced on forums (论坛) that it was unsafe for women travellers to travel there alone. I finally packed my bags and went anyway. Why? I love getting to show the reality of misunderstood places around the world in my blog.
When landing in Mozambique, I was wondering whether I would leave the country just a few days later. Actually, I didn’t need to think that way. I felt just as safe in Mozambique as I did in many other places in the world. While walking slowly on the beautiful beach, I ran into several friendly locals. They showed me around, and we talked happily on the way. I tried many types of delicious local food. I carried my camera and phone in my bag and took photos and wasn’t robbed (抢劫). Of course, it was just my own experience, but I didn’t feel that I was travelling in some kind of dangerous and lawless country. I felt safe and welcomed in Mozambique.
I learned from this experience that it is important to check out what we have read with our own eyes before we make comments. If you are nervous about travelling to a place, read about travel experiences from people who have actually been to the place.

C. She bought a new camera for her friend. D. She went surfing on sunny days.

A. To recommend readers to visit Mozambique.
B. To advise women not to travel by themselves.

D. To invite readers to share their own travel experiences.

West Ashley High School is giving high school students a head start (领先优势) with real-world work experience before they ever leave their campuses, thanks to its Center for Advanced Studies.
“This is the closest thing that we can do and still call it an education because it’s work experience. I mean, that’s how we treat this place like work,” Mackenzie Heath, automotive instructor at the West Ashley Center for Advanced Studies, says.
At this Center, there are automotive bays (汽车维修车间), engineering labs and hands-on health science programs; the Center doesn’t feel like a typical high school, and school leaders say that’s the point.
“It’s all about 21st-century skills. The world’s changed. Education needs to change with the world,” Benjamin Bertolot, an engineering teacher at the Center, explains. “Take it apart, know what’s wrong with it and put it back together. And that’s what students are going to do in the real world. They may read some information about the car, but they need to be able to use and understand the tools and the car.”
The Center is home to many different programs in hopes of providing useful skills to students. “It doesn’t matter what classroom you go into. There’s going to be creativity, lots of hands-on learning and industry-grade technology,” Bertolot says. “We want these kids to not just finish the program, but also get professional certifications (证书). This way, they can either start working right away, or get real experience in fields like engineering or healthcare before going to college.”
For the educators here, the reward isn’t only in the classroom, it’s in watching their students do well long after graduation. “It’s what’s kept me going for 22 years. Seeing my students grow, succeed, and live meaningful lives brings me great pride and direction,” Bertolot says.
28. What makes the Center special?
A. Providing free education. B. Organizing off-campus activities.
C. Training students in working skills. D. Allowing students to do part-time jobs.
29. What is Bertolot’s view on education?
A. It should match personal interests. B. It should change with the times.
C. It should be a lifelong journey. D. It should be for everyone.
30. What does Bertolot expect of the Center?
A. It’ll include more high school teachers. B. It’ll use more technology in class.
C. It’ll take the place of traditional classrooms. D. It’ll prepare students for their future choices.
31. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Learning for the Real World B. The Changing World of Education
C. Finding Purpose in High School D. Skills Needed in the 21st Century
D
David Thomas and I have been friends since we were five. We celebrated his 26th birthday last weekend, marking about twenty years of friendship. Now David has got a PhD in English literature, and I’m a science reporter. We found we were both interested in a study published in Child Development.
In the study, the researchers followed 169 people for 10 years, starting when they were 15. At the age of 15 and again at 16, the participants (参与者) were asked to bring in their closest friends for one-on-one interviews. “They were asked how much trust there was, how good communication was and how disconnected they felt in the friendship,” says Rachel Narr, the lead author of the study. Each year, the participants were surveyed regarding their feelings of anxiety, depression (忧郁) and self-worth.
Narr says when she watched videos made in the early years of the study, she could easily tell which relationships were strong based on their behavior. “These teens are likely to be open with one another about difficult topics, and they’re more connected and helping each other,” she says. At the end of the study, the researchers found the ones who had close and meaningful connections reported less depression and anxiety and more self-worth at 25 than they had at 15 and 16.
“The finding shows us the importance of teenage friendships, not just in the short term but throughout adulthood,” says Catherine Bagwell, an expert in psychology. “We haven’t had many powerful and detailed findings like this.”
I wouldn’t be the same person without David. During our senior year of high school, my parents were busy. I often stayed at home alone on weekends, but sometimes David was there with me. He helped me study, clean the house and do other things. Over the years, we’ve helped each other get through bigger difficulties. Last weekend, we talked about Narr’s study, and we saw ourselves. The study found the presence of a best friend matters, and that makes sense to us.
32. What did the researchers study about the participants at first?
A. The sources of stress they suffered.
B. The degree of closeness of their friendships.
C. Their preferred methods of making friends.
D. The effects of their friendship on physical health.
33. What can be implied from the finding of the study?
A. Teenage friendships can influence job choices.
B. Youth is a perfect period to form lifelong relationships.
C. Quality teenage friendships bring benefits in adulthood.
D. Long-term relationships develop a sense of responsibility.
34. What is Catherine Bagwell’s attitude towards the study?
A. Doubtful. B. Uninterested. C. Disappointed. D. Positive.
35. Why does the author mention his friendship with David?
A. To honor his long-lost friend.
B. To support the finding of the study.
C. To show the finding holds true for everyone.
D. To show the importance of friends’ shared interests.

The colorful walls, the big play areas, and the hope for your favorite toys in the Happy Meal, these were all factors of McDonald’s or other fast food restaurants back in the 1970s to 1990s. With playful dining chairs and cartoon characters, it felt almost strange for an adult to go there without children. But now, every time you go into one, the first thing you see is a big screen, and white everywhere. Something has changed, but why?
McDonald’s has commented on the recent changes, stating they are meant to bring innovation (创新) and modernization. Well, I disagree. There are more reasons, and many point the finger at Super Size Me. It is a 2004 documentary (纪录片), where a man tries to survive on only McDonald’s food for a month, and it harms his body seriously. This led to lots of people rethinking fast food, especially its effect on children, and other places like Panera and Chipotle gained more ground because they seem cheaper and healthier.
While Super Size Me may be a catalyst (催化剂), I think the deeper reason is that the fast food companies found a more marketable group: young adults.
If we go through all the changes, it’s easy to see how they benefit buyers who are in their twenties or older. The modern designs are more comfortable for a young adult than a place with a play area. The big screens to order are convenient and quick, something a young adult would value. Advertisements often show low prices, which a kid wouldn’t care about. All changes focus on young adults.
So what’s next? I doubt these companies will stick to their modern white designs. With higher prices and less creative restaurants, more people are giving up fast food. But the one thing that many people can’t get over is their memories of youth—memories of a better time. I say this because it’s already happening. These restaurants have brought back characters like Ronald McDonald and special menu from their early days, because it’s what started this discussion.
36. Why did fast food restaurants look more interesting in the past?
A. To sell more toys. B. To attract more kids.
C. To provide faster service. D. To make adults feel at home.
37. What does the underlined phrase “gained more ground” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Set lower prices. B. Offered more food.
C. Became more popular. D. Served fewer customers.
38. What is the author’s purpose in writing paragraph 4?
A. To prove the changes are designed for young adults.
B. To explain why children lose interest in fast food.
C. To show how convenient the new ordering system is.
D. To compare different groups of fast food lovers.
39. What can be inferred about fast food restaurants from the last paragraph?
A. They will reach a younger audience. B. They will try to bring back the past.
C. They will focus on healthier food. D. They will become more creative.

The first day of high school may feel amazing and enjoyable to many. 40 Get to know the habits and attitudes you should develop over the next few years. They will shape not only your grades, but also your confidence, friendships, and sense of purpose.
Get active. 41 It will not only give you the chance to meet people who share your interests, but also build skills that classes alone cannot teach. Whether you are into music, debate, robotics, or community service, there is a place for you. By participating in these events, you can discover what you truly love and unlock your hidden talents.

For example, keep a planner or use a phone app to track your homework, test dates, and activities. And research shows that a neat desk can improve focus by about 15%, while poor time management is a leading cause of stress among freshmen.
Care for your well-being. A strong body and a healthy mind go hand in hand with your learning success. Get enough sleep, eat healthily, and find healthy ways to manage stress. Reading a book, playing a sport, or simply taking a walk can refresh your mind and improve your focus. 44

Last Sunday, Grandpa proudly showed me his new tablet (平板电脑). At 73, he’s not just reading the news — he’s taking an online course in digital photography. Watching his eyes light up as he looked over his latest photos, I couldn’t help but 45 how far he’s come.
It’s hard to believe that just two years ago, Grandpa often felt 46 about technology, unsure how to 47 when we shared photos or messages online. “I’m too 48 for this,” he would say, believing that learning 49 skills was no longer meant for him. Seeing his disappointment, I knew we needed a(n) 50 .

By now, Grandpa has 55 far more than what we expected. He has 56 designed a simple website to show his woodworking and 57 his own smart home system to manage daily life. Watching Grandpa learn technology has taught me something 58 about aging. It’s not about keeping up with the young, but about finding your own way and purpose. 第四部分 写作 (满分25分)
A Challenge I Faced in My Teenage Years
I used to be terribly shy in my junior high days. Speaking in front of the class always made my heart race.
Determined to change, I signed up for the school debate club. At first, I was too nervous to participate, so I just sat and watched others present their arguments. Still, I kept practicing at home again and again — first in front of a mirror, and then before my parents. Gradually, I started recording myself. After months of effort, I finally gathered my courage and gave a three-minute speech confidently in public.
This small success changed me completely. I’ve come to understand that true courage doesn’t mean having no fear — it means moving forward even when you are afraid. Teenage challenges are not barriers, but stepping stones. Step by step, I grew stronger.

Text 10 三十岁的课堂新生
Good afternoon, everyone! Never thought I’d be sitting in a classroom again at 30. Let me share my special journey from a fast-food worker to a student again.
After leaving high school at 18, I became a full-time fast-food cook. I cooked burgers every day. (18) It was tiring, but I learned to work fast under pressure.
