When cold winter came, strong wind and heavy snow hit the forest. Most small birds had no warm places to stay. They felt cold and lonely. They walked to the little bird and politely asked for a small corner of the hole. However, the selfish bird refused them coldly. It wanted to keep all the warmth and happiness for itself.
One freezing night, a heavy snow fell suddenly. Thick snow completely covered the tree and blocked the hole’s entrance (入口). The little bird was caught inside. It had no way to go out and felt scared and helpless. It regretted being so selfish.

Have you ever heard about I-people and E-people? Learning about these differences can help us know each other better and build nicer relationships with people around us.
I-people are introverts (内向的人). They feel more comfortable when they are alone or with just a few close friends. They often enjoy quiet activities like reading or thinking deeply. They like to listen carefully and think before speaking, so they seldom jump into a conversation in a noisy crowd.
E-people are extroverts (性格外向的人). They feel excited and happy when they are with a lot of people. ▲ They like talking a lot to you even if they just know you for the first time. And they want to be the leaders in group activities. They often feel bored when they are alone for too long and hope to share their ideas with others.
Last month, I invited my friends, Jessica, Jamie and Alex, to my 15th birthday party. Jessica didn’t come. She told me she preferred quiet time and seldom took part in big parties. Jamie also decided not to join us. She told me she liked staying at home and reading books. However, at the party, Alex enjoyed talking with everyone. He felt much happier and more excited when he stayed with my family and friends.
Recognizing these differences helps us know more about both kinds of people. Introverts bring thoughtful ideas and useful advice about some important things, while extroverts bring us life and fun. Everyone is different, and that’s what makes friendships special.
26. How do the I-people feel when they are with lots of people?
A. Close. B. Uncomfortable. C. Excited.
27. Which of the following can be put in “ ▲ “ in Paragraph 3?
A. Extroverts enjoy meeting different people.
B. Extroverts should try not to speak much.
C. It’s difficult for extroverts to stay at home.
28. Why didn’t Jamie agree to go to the birthday party?
A. She felt very sick that day.
B. She had to lead a group activity.
C. She preferred staying home and reading.
29. Which of the following is an extrovert?
A. Jessica. B. Alex. C. Jamie.

Arctic sea ice has become about 40 percent smaller over 40 years. But Antarctic sea ice slowly grew until recently. After 2015, Antarctic sea ice became much smaller. It went from its largest size to some of its smallest sizes.
Some research said higher air temperatures may be the cause. But two new studies show ocean warming is a bigger reason for sea ice melting (融化). As part of ocean movement, warm salty water goes around Antarctica 200 metres below the surface. But records show this warm deep salty water has been rising to the surface, where it can melt sea ice.
Antarctica is surrounded (环绕) by an area of strong winds and storms. Climate change has pushed this stormy area south. The stormy area brings more rain and snow into the sea ice area. The rain and snow make a layer of fresh water (一层淡水) on top. This layer protects the bottom of the sea ice from warm deep salty water. But the stormy area also brings stronger winds. These winds blow surface water and ice forward. Then warm deep salty water rises to fill the empty space. Between 2014 and 2016, this wind-caused rising began to beat the protecting layer, and sea ice began to melt.
Researchers plan to study other things that may also be important all over Antarctica. Examples include changes in sea ice movement and more mixing of ocean water caused by more storms. By studying ocean information, they hope to learn more about future changes in Antarctic sea ice.

My experience of becoming a better me
I have changed a lot recently. When I came to junior high, I had trouble getting along with classmates. Too shy to talk with them, I felt upset and lonely. It was really a big challenge for me.
Luckily, I told my parents, who encouraged me to change. I took their advice and tried to be friendly. When I met them at school, I greeted them with big smiles. Besides, I helped classmates in trouble. Gradually, we grew closer and I made good friends.

C. Excited.

A. Extroverts enjoy meeting different people.

C. It’s difficult for extroverts to stay at home.

A. She felt very sick that day.
B. She had to lead a group activity.
C. She preferred staying home and reading.
29. Which of the following is an extrovert?
A. Jessica. B. Alex. C. Jamie.
30. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Ideas and Thoughts: Useful Advice for Friends
B. Listening and Sharing: Good Ways to communicate
C. Introverts and Extroverts: Different Kinds of People
