If you look up in a forest, you may notice something really interesting: the tops of trees don’t actually touch each other. There are little gaps between them, and you can even see the sky through these breaks. This is called “crown shyness”.
Meg Lowman, a tree expert, explains that it’s a tree’s way to stay healthy. Trees are always fighting with each other for sunlight and water. By keeping a certain gap from each other, they reduce (减少) the chance of losing leaves when they brush against neighbouring trees. Leaves are very important, as they help trees get sunlight and water. Also, just like we stay away from sick people, trees keep their leaves from touching other trees. This helps them keep away from harmful (有害的) insects and sickness and keep healthy. “Tree sickness can come from insects or even be the insects themselves,” Lowman says.
Crown shyness mostly happens in tropical (热带的) trees, but the lessons are also true for other trees. Trees with more space grow bigger and stronger. Lowman says we should take good care of trees, just like we take care of a rose garden. Healthy trees make us feel cooler, and they clean water better. “The healthier the forest, the more benefits the owner will get,” says Lowman. “when a tree gets sick, don’t just cut it down. Trees support many living things like insects and birds,” the expert adds.
So next time you see trees, remember: they teach us to be good neighbors. After all, sharing space wisely keeps everyone healthy, whether you’re a tree or a human!

In Australia, Cockatoos are common birds, they are known for solving problems and learning from each other. They can open dustbin lids (垃圾箱盖) to find food inside. Scientists also found cockatoos know how to drink from drinking fountains (喷泉式饮水器).
Dr Barbara Klump, a scientist, once noticed a cockatoo drinking from a fountain. She thought someone left the water running by mistake. But after watching a video (视频), she realized the bird actually turned on the fountain by itself. Dr Klump and her team decided to study cockatoos. They marked 24 cockatoos and set up two cameras (照相机) near a drinking fountain the birds used often. During over 44 days, the cameras recorded 14 hours of video, showing 525 times when the birds used the fountain.
The scientists found about 70% of the cockatoos in the area tried to use the fountain. Every bird did it a little differently, but they all used at least one foot to turn on the fountain. The cockatoos didn’t always succeed and they only got water in about 41% of their tries. They had an especially hard time when they were in a hurry or when other cockatoos were trying to use the fountain at the same time.
The scientists aren’t exactly sure why cockatoos drink from drinking fountains. Maybe the clean water tastes better than the water from a river. Or maybe drinking from fountains makes cockatoos feel safer, as it helps them better watch for eagles. Dr Klump guessed cockatoos just like the fun of making the fountains work!
Cockatoos seem to get used to city life easily. The scientists say they can’t wait to find out what skills the birds will learn next!
31.What does the first paragraph mainly talk about?
A.Cockatoos’ abilities. B.Cockatoos’ living area. C.Cockatoos’ eating habits.
32.Which question does the second paragraph answer?
A.Who left the water running by mistake?
B.How did Dr Klump’s team study the cockatoos?
C.When did Dr Klump get interested in cockatoos?

A.The cockatoos often hurried to use the fountain.
B.Most of the cockatoos got water from the fountain successfully.
C.Each cockatoo had its own way of using the fountain.
34.Which are the possible (可能的) reasons why cockatoos drink from drinking fountains?
① The water has a better taste. ② The activity brings them joy.
③ The activity keeps them safe. ④ The fountains are easier to use.
A.①②③ B.②③④ C.①②④
35.What is the purpose (目的) of the text?

Do you know how many ants live on earth? Scientists from Hong Kong now say the number is about 20,000,000,000,000 ants! 46
How did they count such a big number? 47 They picked up fallen leaves and earth and dried them to make the ants come out for counting. By learning from 465 studies across all continents (大陆), the team was able to guess this number.
The number of ants and where they live can show how the environment is changing. “Ants are very important in nature,” Wang Runxi, one of the scientists, told Science and Technology Daily. 48 They are part of the food chain. While ants live in many places, they like warmer weather and stay away from very cold areas.
Wang added that ants can feel changes in the environment more easily than other big animals. Most ants live in hot areas, but in the last few years, they’ve been moving toward colder places because of global warming. 49 For example, cutting down trees damages (破坏) the places where ants live.
“This research helps us understand what ants will do when their environment changes,” the scientists wrote. 50
A.Scientists studied ants in different places.
B.Human activities also change the number of ants.
C.That means there are nearly 2,500 ants for every person.
D.By studying ants, we can learn more about the health of our planet.
E.For example, birds help other animals like ants find something to eat.
F.They help keep soil healthy, carry seeds to new places, and break down dead things.

根据短文内容,完成图表中所缺信息。
Do you enjoy planting flowers with your family? Do you know how to make your garden more beautiful? Many people may say sure. Sunlight and water, of course! However, there is another surprising key helping you to grow happy and healthy plants. That is music!
According to a study, listening to music can affect plant growth. It shows that plants grow faster, with larger flowers and healthier leaves when they listen to music. Also, different kinds of music even have different influences (影响) on plants.
How can this happen? In fact, plants don’t hear sounds like humans do, but they can feel vibrations (震动) from sounds. These sound vibrations can help plants grow like wind or water.
Then, what kinds of music do plants like better? Chris Beardshaw, a famous expert(专家) in gardening, once did some research on this. He discovered that classical music improved plant growth, and that heavy metal music also helped grow healthier plants. However, he found that rock music might cause plants to die. So be careful with the kinds of music when you play music in your garden.
In a word, the study showed that plants like rhythmic (有节奏的) music better, especially classical music and heavy metal music. Actually, it’s not easy to understand what music plants like better. That’s because it also depends on (取决于) the kinds of plants, the kinds of music, and the areas where plants grow. In order to build a bridge between music and plant growth, people need to do more studies.
Whether (是否) or not plants truly like music, you can play music in your garden, especially when you work there. At the very least, music can make you enjoy the work more.

As time goes by, more and more wild animals are in great danger and some even died out. In order to make money, some people kill too many animals and sell their fur in the shopping centre and their meat to restaurants in the world.
Tibetan antelopes usually live in groups. Their wool (羊毛) is warm and fine, so people can use it to make expensive clothes. That’s why so many antelopes are killed. Although people can get the wool without killing the animals, they simply kill them before taking the wool. The number of Tibetan antelopes is dropping year by year. And there are fewer than 75,000 Tibetan antelopes left in the world now.
As human beings continue to develop (发展), animals’ homes are becoming fewer and fewer. A long time ago, thylacines lived in the wild and they were very happy and free. But as humans made the wild land become their own farms, thylacines didn’t have enough food to eat or places to live in. So they started to eat farmers’ animals. Farmers hated thylacines very much and then they killed hundreds of them.
Some animals get endangered or die out because of the changes of the environment. White-coated weasels live in a forest in Poland. They have white fur in winter. Their white fur is the same colour as snow so other animals have a hard time finding them. But scientists found that between 1997 and 2007, the number of snowy days in the weasels’ environment dropped from 80 days to 40 days. Many of the white-coated weasels were eaten by other animals.
56.What do people kill many Tibetan antelopes for?
57.Why did farmers hate thylacines very much?
58.How does the white fur of white-coated weasels help them keep safe?
59.What are the TWO reasons for some animals getting endangered or dying out from this passage?
60.What can we students do to protect wild animals in our daily life?

33.What did the result of the study show?
A.The cockatoos often hurried to use the fountain.
B.Most of the cockatoos got water from the fountain successfully.
C.Each cockatoo had its own way of using the fountain.
34.Which are the possible (可能的) reasons why cockatoos drink from drinking fountains?
① The water has a better taste. ② The activity brings them joy.
③ The activity keeps them safe. ④ The fountains are easier to use.
A.①②③ B.②③④ C.①②④
35.What is the purpose (目的) of the text?
A.To encourage us to protect cockatoos.
B.To show that cockatoos are clever birds.
C.To tell us to learn more about cockatoos.

根据短文内容,按要求回答问题。

三、阅读表达(共10小题,计20分)
A. 完成图表(共5小题;每小题2分,计10分)

B.任务型阅读(共5小题,每小题2分,计10分)
根据短文内容,按要求回答问题。
【答案】56.For their wool/To make expensive clothes./For making expensive clothes. 57.Because (thylacines didn’t have enough food to eat or places to live in, so) they killed/ate farmers’ animals. 58.Their white fur is the same color as snow, so other animals have a hard time finding them. 59.Humans’ activities/actions/killings and the changes of the environment./People kill animals for the money and the environment changes. 60.We can refuse to buy things made of wild animals’ fur.
根据第二段中“Their wool (羊毛) is warm and fine, so people can use it to make expensive clothes. That’s why so many antelopes are killed.”可知,藏羚羊的羊毛温暖而细密,人们可以用它来制作昂贵的衣服,这就是人们捕杀这么多藏羚羊的原因。故填For their wool/To make expensive clothes./For making expensive clothes.
57.根据第三段中“But as humans made the wild land become their own farms, thylacines didn’t have enough food to eat or places to live in. So they started to eat farmers’ animals. Farmers hated thylacines very much...”可知,袋狼没有足够的食物吃,也没有地方住,所以它们开始吃农民的动物,因此农民非常讨厌袋狼。故填Because (thylacines didn’t have enough food to eat or places to live in, so) they killed/ate farmers’ animals.
58.根据第四段中“They have white fur in winter. Their white fur is the same colour as snow so other animals have a hard time finding them.”可知,白鼬的白色皮毛和雪的颜色一样,所以其他动物很难找到它们,这有助于它们保持安全。故填Their white fur is the same color as snow, so other animals have a hard time finding them.
59.根据第一段中“In order to make money, some people kill too many animals...”,第三段中“As human beings continue to develop (发展), animals’ homes are becoming fewer and fewer...”以及第四段中“Some animals get endangered or die out because of the changes of the environment.”可知,一些动物濒危或灭绝的两个原因是:人类的活动/捕杀以及环境的变化。故填Humans’ activities/actions/killings and the changes of the environment./People kill animals for the money and the environment changes.
60.本题为开放性试题,言之有理即可,答案可以为“我们可以拒绝购买用野生动物的皮毛制成的东西”,故填We can refuse to buy things made of wild animals’ fur.
