Do you know who the boys are? What are they doing? Discuss with your classmates. It was a bright and fresh Saturday morning. The sweet smell of summer flowers hung in the warm air. Such beauty was enough to fill any heart with joy. But Tom Sawyer felt as if the weight of the world was on his shoulders. He looked at the fence his aunt wanted him to paint and his heart sank further. The fence was 30 yards long and 3 yards high. Tom painted one board and surveyed his progress, and then he sat down to have a rest. He imagined his friends having fun and the thought of this burnt him like fire. But just then, Tom had an idea. “I know what I’ll do!” he said aloud. He picked up his brush and went back to work. Ben Rogers came along the road. He was singing happily and eating an apple. Tom paid him no attention and carried on with the task at hand. “Do you want to come swimming?” said Ben. “Oh, you have to work, don’t you? What a pity!” “Work?” said Tom, looking shocked. “This isn’t work. Does a boy get a chance to paint a fence like this every day?” He went on painting, fully absorbed in his work. Ben became more interested. After a while, he said, “Tom, can I do some painting?” Tom replied, “Sorry, Ben, Aunt Polly is very particular about her fence. I’m the only person that can do it right.” “Please,” said Ben, “I’ll give you half my apple. Wait, have it all!” “Fine,” said Tom, shaking his hand like a gentleman. “But be careful.” Tom passed Ben the brush with a pretend look of concern on his face. He sat under a tree, enjoying the apple while his friend sweated in the sun. All day, boys came to make fun of Tom, but they stayed to paint. When Ben got tired, Billy Fisher was waiting. He gave Tom a kite for a chance to paint. Then Johnny Miller offered him twelve marbles, and so on. By the afternoon Tom had gained all sorts of toys, and the fence had gained three coats of paint. Tom set off with a spring in his step to report back to his aunt about his excellent painting skills. 1 Choose the correct answers with the information from the story on page 101. (1)Why was Tom Sawyer unhappy on Saturday morning? Because he had to paint the fence. But Tom Sawyer felt as if the weight of the world was on his shoulders. He looked at the fence his aunt wanted him to paint and his heart sank further. The fence was 30 yards long and 3 yards high. Analysis: Aunt Polly asked Tom to paint the huge fence on Saturday. Tom wanted to go out and play with friends instead of doing the boring work. That’s why he felt heavy and upset. (2)Was Tom really enjoying the work when he said “This isn't work. Does a boy get a chance to paint a fence like this every day”? Why or why not? No, he wasn’t. He just said these words to fool Ben. Tom passed Ben the brush with a pretend look of concern on his face. He sat under a tree, enjoying the apple while his friend sweated in the sun. Analysis: Tom hated painting the fence at first. He pretended to love this job to make Ben curious. It was a trick. Tom did not really enjoy painting at all. (3)Why did Ben say "Wait, have it all? Because he really wanted to paint the fence. Ben became more interested. After a while, he said, “Tom, can I do some painting?” Analysis: Tom’s words made Ben think painting the fence was a special, fun chance. Ben was eager to have a try. But he tricked his friends, so he is also naughty. (5)What do you think was the funniest part of the story? I think the funniest part was when Tom Sawyer tricked the other boys into painting the fence for him. They thought it was a fun and enjoyable task, so they were willing to do this chore. All day, boys came to make fun of Tom, but they stayed to paint. By the afternoon Tom had gained all sorts of toys, and the fence had gained three coats of paint. Analysis: At first, the boys planned to laugh at Tom. But Tom’s trick changed their minds. They paid toys for the “right” to paint. The boys worked hard in the sun while Tom relaxed and collected toys. This part is humorous. ... ... Your ideas Discuss the questions below. If you were Tom Sawyer, would you do a trick like this to your friends? Why or why not? No, I wouldn’t. Because tricking friends is not honest. If I fool my friends, they will feel cheated and won’t trust me any more. True friendship needs honesty and respect. Yes, I would. It is just a small, harmless trick for fun. Tom didn’t hurt anyone. He just found a clever way to finish the boring work. It is a smart little game between friends. 应用实践 03 29 1 The words in italics explain the meanings of four words and one phrase from the story on page 101.Find them and complete the sentences.
