A
“Life is speeding up. Everyone is becoming unwell.” This may sound like something someone would say today. But in fact, it was written by a writer in the 1970s.
We all love new inventions. They are exciting, amazing and can even change our lives. But is it true that having all these developments really improves the quality of our lives?
Picture this: You’re rushing to finish your homework on the computer. Your mobile phone rings. A message from your friend appears (出现) on the screen. The noise from the mobile phone is getting louder and louder. Suddenly, the computer goes blank (空白) and you lose all your work. Now you have to stay up all night to get it done.
Inventions have sped up our lives so much that they often leave us feeling stressed and tired. Why do you think people who live far away from noisy cities, who have no telephones, no cars, not even any electricity often seem to be happier? Perhaps that is because they live simpler lives.
One family in the UK went “back in time” to see what life was like without all the inventions we have today. The grandparents, with their daughter, and grandsons, Benjamin, 10, and Thomas, 7, spent nine weeks in a 1940s house. They had no washing machine, microwave, computer or mobile phone.
The grandmother, Lyn, said, “The more things you have, the more difficult life becomes.” The boys said they fought less. Probably, they said, because there was less to fight over, such as their computer. Benjamin also noticed that his grandmother had changed from being a fashionable granny to one who cooked things.
23. What does the writer want to tell us in Paragraph 3?
A. New inventions can bring us some troubles. B. New inventions can help us work more efficiently.
C. New inventions can improve the quality of our lives. D. New inventions can make people feel relaxed while working.
24. Why did the family choose to spend some time in a 1940s house?
A. Because they loved to live simple lives. B. Because they all enjoyed modern inventions.
C. Because they were troubled by modern inventions. D. Because they wanted to experience life without modern inventions.
25. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. They lived a normal life. B. The family just enjoyed living together.
C. Their life became simpler. D. They felt their life was full of excitement.
26. What’s the passage mainly about?
A. The history of technology. B. Problems caused by technology.
C. The development of technology. D. How technology improved our life.
B
The list for the sixth-grade basketball team was announced (宣布) online. I was a little worried because I knew how much my 12-year-old son wanted to make the team.
I read the list of 13 names for a few minutes. Finally, I had to tell myself that my son wasn’t on the list. I felt sad. I wished it would be about victory. Like every parent, I love to say, “You did it!”
Instead, I had to give my son a speech to comfort him, which was a lot less exciting, but probably more important. It was not really a speech, but a further discussion about spirit, courage and not giving up. Although it was painful for me to see myself so disappointed (失望), I needed to keep my own feelings in check. Sure, I wanted to call the coach to say he made a big mistake, but I would not. Nor would I let my son know that I thought it unfair. Instead, I put my own feelings aside and let my son have a safe place to calm down. And when he was done, I needed to encourage him to continue to improve skills. That day was a loss, but the only way to get another win was to put on his trainers and get on the basketball court again.
My son is 15 years old now. And, after being cut from the team for three years in a row (连续地), he got to see his name on the list for the high school team. Last week, my husband and I watched him play in his first game. The smile on his face when he made his first shot is something I will never forget. After so many failures, it was a win that didn’t come easy for him. And it wouldn’t have happened if he had given up trying.
27. Why did the writer feel sad at first?
A. Because her son didn’t feel confident.
B. Because her son didn’t make the basketball team.
C. Because her son decided to stop playing basketball.
D. Because her son failed in a few basketball matches.
28. What does the underlined part “keep my own feelings in check” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Hide my own feeling. B. Hurt my own feeling. C. Follow my own feeling. D. Show my own feeling.
29. What did the mother do after her son failed to make the team?
A. She called the coach to complain. B. She told her son it was unfair.
C. She encouraged him to keep trying. D. She advised him to give up basketball.
30. What can be inferred (推断) about the writer’s son?
A. He felt unhappy with his parents.
B. He stopped working on his basketball skills.
C. He played in a high school team at the age of 12.
D. He was finally accepted by his high school team.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. The Best Basketball Player. B. Mother’s Love for Her Son. C. Success Comes after Failure. D. The Importance of Teamwork.

Having a teenager at home can be a real headache. Many teenagers smoke, wear strange hairstyles and even fight. Basically, they are often taking risks. Earlier studies have shown that teenagers are more likely to make irrational decisions than people from any other age group, including children and adults. Is it that teenagers are too young to tell right from wrong?
Not really. So what’s the reason? According to Laurence, a teacher from a US university, the reason is that teenagers care a lot about how their peers (同龄人) view them—that is “peer influence”. As children enter their teenage years, they spend more time with their friends and classmates, and they also care more about what they think of them.
This makes teenagers make decisions without thinking about the costs. In a test, a group of teenagers were asked to play a video driving game. When they played with their friends, watching around them, they took more chances and drove more carelessly because that would increase their possibility of winning. But when they played alone, they drove more safely.
Why do peers have such a big influence on teens’ behavior? As Laurence sees it, a teenager’s brain is like a car with a good accelerator (油门) but a weak brake (刹车). The “accelerator” is fully developed by teenage years, while the “brake” is still not fully developed. When teenagers are watched by their peers, they usually push hard on the accelerator. With their weak brake, it is likely that they are going to end up in an accident. But the good news is that a violent (暴力的) teenager doesn’t necessarily become a violent adult. About two-thirds to three-quarters of violent youth grow out of it. “They get more self-controlled.”
32. What does the underlined word “irrational” in the first paragraph mean?
A. Quick. B. Crazy. C. Careful. D. Correct.
33. Why are teenagers often taking risks according to the text?
A. They like difficult tasks.
B. They care about costs.
C. They are too young to tell right from wrong.
D. They care a lot about what their peers think of them.
34. How does Laurence explain the effect of peer influence on teens’ behavior?
A. By using a metaphor (比喻).
B. By giving examples.
C. By presenting research findings.
D. By performing an in-depth analysis (分析).
35. According to the text, with peers around them, teenagers tend to (倾向于) ________.
A. use more self-control
B. focus more on short-term benefits
C. perform better than when they are alone
D. become more careful about what they do
36. What can we learn from the text?
A. Peer influence is bad for teenagers.
B. Teenagers are easy to have traffic accidents.
C. Most of the teenagers become less violent when they grow up.
D. Teenagers shouldn’t spend all the free time with their friends.

Have you ever noticed that some kids love going to big parties or hanging out (闲逛) with a group of friends, while others prefer to stay at home, read a book, or just enjoy their peaceful time? It has something to do with your personality.
Psychologists (心理学家) say there are two main kinds of people: E-people and I-people.
____37____
E-people love being around other people. They feel energized when they’re with friends, going to parties, or doing fun group activities. For them, happiness is all about sharing laughs, stories, and exciting things with others.
____38____ They feel more relaxed and happy when they’re alone, doing things like reading, drawing, or just watching movies. They don’t need a lot of people around to feel good. They just need themselves and their favorite activities.
But here’s the cool thing: Neither way is better! ____39____ It’s like finding your favorite taste of ice cream-some people love chocolate, while others love strawberry. Both are great, but it depends on what you like.
The most important thing is to understand yourself and do what makes you happy.
____40____ After all, happiness is like a jigsaw (拼图)-each piece is different, but when they fit together, they make your life complete.
So, whether you prefer laughing with friends or enjoying quiet moments alone, accept your true self. Be yourself, and your life will be filled with joy!
A. E-people are more likely to succeed.
B. Let me tell you what they’re like.
C. Well, there’s a reason for that!
D. Both E-people and I-people can be happy, as long as (只要) they do what they enjoy.
E. Life is about finding what works for you and enjoying every minute.
F. I-people like quiet time.
六、回答问题 (共4小题:前三题每题2分,第四小题3分 满分9分)
阅读下面短文,回答短文后的问题,每题答案不超过10个单词。
Cats are known for being odd and independent. Dogs are seen as friendly and laid-back. Do these stereotypes (刻板印象) have any basis in reality?
Psychologist Sam Gosling asked pet owners to describe their own personalities. Cat people seem to be solitary—enjoy spending time alone. They are also more creative. Dog people seem to be outgoing, energetic and relaxed. They are more likely to see themselves as “responsible and loyal (忠诚的)”.
Asking people to describe their own personalities has limits (限制). Everyone wants to look good. So researchers used object recognition technology to identify (辨别, 鉴定) users who posted pictures of cats or dogs on social media. This way, they can know people’s real personalities.
Dog people looked more social and easygoing. They had more friends on social media than cat people did. Cat people were more likely to be single and to post about feeling tired, angry, or sad. But cat people also seemed more smart and open-minded. They liked social media pages about books, TV shows, and movies more than dog people did.
Sometimes people disagree with these findings because they can think of exceptions. Some cat owners are outgoing. Some dog owners are worriers. That doesn’t make research on cat and dog people wrong. Most research focuses on groups of people. It describes what is true in general, not what is true for each individual (个人).
Pet owners’ personalities might affect pet preferences because people choose pets that they think match their personalities. It seems reasonable for people who like alone time to choose cats. It is more likely for active, outgoing people to choose dogs. But it may not be that simple. Pet choices also might influence pet owners’ personalities, “It wouldn’t be surprising if it works both ways,” Gosling says.
41. What are cat people like according to Gosling?

42. Why did researchers use object recognition technology?

阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
“Life is speeding up.
【答案】23. A 24. D 25. C 26.

My personality and my teenage problem
I am Li Hua, a Grade 9 student. My personality has shaped not only who I am but also caused the teenage problem I face. I am quite shy and quiet. I always worry about making mistakes in front of others. Because of this personality, I seldom ask questions in class even when I don’t understand the knowledge. This brings me a lot of stress and makes me feel lonely sometimes.
To solve this problem, I have made a plan. First, I will try to answer questions in small groups to build confidence. Second, I plan to join the school English club to practice speaking with friends. Also, I will talk to my teachers when I am in trouble. I believe being brave helps me grow up happily.
