I woke up this morning, excited but anxious,as today was the day when I would begin my journey of senior high school.
The school I attended is an all-female boarding school, which is the only single-sex school in this city. Some people say single-sex schools are better than mixed-sex ones in that they have classes specially designed for their male or female students.I am curious to know what such a school looks like.Thousands of thoughts flashed through my mind. Will I fit in?Will I make friends? Will I have nice teachers? What if I make a bad impression on the other girls? What if I can’t concentrate in class as I did in junior high?
After breakfast,I set off with Mum sitting beside me and Dad driving the car.We were warmly received by a group of seniors at the school gate.I said goodbye to Mum and Dad there. Some of the seniors helped take my suitcase(手提箱) to the dorm (宿舍),where I met my three roommates,Sally,Laura and Amanda.Only two of us have Chinese nationality while Sally is German and Laura American, who impressed me most with her beautiful eyes and sweet smile.
Since we had no classes in the morning, the four of us decided to explore our campus. Our school is beautiful with tall trees, bright flowers,nice-looking grassland and buildings of the southern Chinese style.A bulletin board (宣传栏) we passed by shows a lot of activity photos and says,“With more than 50 student organisations on campus, there is a community for every interest”.I took a photo of the name list of the organisations so that I could study them carefully this weekend before I choose to register with some.I am looking forward to improving myself through group activities.

Knowing how to read, write and speak in one language is enough for many people. They prefer to focus their energy on other things that improve their lives.Scientists, however, continue to confirm that bilingualism(n. 双语能力),the ability to speak two languages fluently, has more benefits than many realise.
First,it’s good for a child’s brain.Learning a second language improves their academic achievements. Many studies have shown that children who learn a foreign language get better grades at school.Bilingual children also display a better facility in their native language.Their grammar, vocabulary and spelling skills are stronger than those of single-language speakers. Children who learn a second language become expert problem-solvers and creative thinkers. That’s because their brains are constantly working to sort out which language to speak and when.Studies further show that bilingual teens are better at multitasking.
Multilingual parents understand the benefits of learning more than one language.Ben Mazor of Montreal speaks English,French and Hebrew. He said,“Kids’ brains are like sponges (海绵).They absorb everything. It comes to them so easily while they’re young. So why not give them the chance to learn another language?”
A number of studies show that bilingualism is valuable to the brain later in life.Scottish researchers did a study using data from 835 native English speakers, who took an IQ test at the age of 11.They were tested again in their 70s.Researchers then compared the results. Those who spoke two or more languages had obviously better cognitive (认知的) abilities.Dr Thomas Baka, co-author of the study, concluded,“Our results suggest a protective effect of bilingualism against age-related cognitive decline.”
So,who would refuse the benefits of learning a second language?
( )28.What does the underlined word “facility” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Ability. B.Interest. C.Taste. D.Method.
( )29.According to Paragraph 3,what may parents like Ben Mazor do?
A.Learn foreign languages by themselves. B.Spend more money on home schooling.
C.Involve kids in foreign language courses. D.Help kids absorb knowledge like a sponge.
( )30.What has the Scottish researchers proved about bilingualism?
A.It extends one’s life. B.It improves test scores.
C.It cures brain disorders. D.It slows mental ageing.
( )31.Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A.Learning Betters the Human Brain B.Bilingualism Shows Great Advantages
C.Language Opens a New World to Kids D.Bilingualism Leads to Academic Success
D
We all love our parents and turn to them when we’re in need, but would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends in the school playground or the lunch queue?Social networking sites have become virtual extensions of the school hallways,so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends?
In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with the latest technology while parents were left behind, content to continue their day-to-day lives as they always had as they had no need to be tech-savvy (精通技术的).However, more and more parents are beginning to realise just how important social networks are in their lives. This realisation has given many parents the motivation to educate themselves about social networking sites.
These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them; there’s also a certain amount of control of privacy that we don’t get in real life.Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member.
It’s a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand,we don’t want to “reject” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel that you have something to hide.On the other hand,if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before.
A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t take it personally if their child ignores their request: “When a teen ignores a parent’s friend request,it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of their lives where they want to exert their independence.”
Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help soften the blow when you do choose not to add them to your friends list.
( )32.Why do many parents want to learn about social networking sites?
A.Because they are eager to explore technologies. B.Because they are bored with their daily life.
C.Because they want to watch their children. D.Because they start to realise their importance.
( )33.What might be the reason for teens to reject their parents’ friend request?
A.They have nothing to hide. B.Their privacy cannot be guaranteed.
C.They don’t want to teach their parents. D.They can’t choose friends around them.
( )34.Why is the survey mentioned in the passage?
A.To warn parents. B.To relieve parents.
C.To challenge parents. D.To criticise parents.
( )35.What is most likely to be talked about next?
A.How to bridge the generation gap. B.How to make friends on social networks.
C.How to explain the rejection to parents. D.How to use the social networking sites wisely.

第二节 (共10个小题,每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面材料,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
When I was in France, I 56 (try) to practise my language skills. However, my 57 (break) French was so poor that sometimes I couldn’t make myself understood in a conversation, so it ended 58 a complete communication breakdown. I did my best to pronounce words clearly but of course I was not a native 59 (speak), so people often misunderstood me.
The other day, I met someone from another part of the country 60 had such a strong accent that at times I found it almost impossible to understand. 61 was hard to believe that we shared the same language, to be honest. And it wasn’t just the accent — as 62 matter of fact, he was speaking a different dialect and using slang (俚语), 63 (make) it difficult for me to follow him. We had to ask someone 64 (translate) for us.
When you travel, there’s sometimes a language barrier (障碍) that makes communication difficult. But I’ve found that body language, while not exactly the same around the world, is 65 (wide) used, which means that we can “talk” to other people. Gestures and facial expressions allow us to show people that we don’t understand, that we want a particular thing, or whatever.
