Many of us have entertained the idea oflearning a foreign language. Here are a few examples,
ranked in order of the number of hours it takes the average English speakers to master them from
lowest to highest:
.Easiest (about 600 hours of study)
Want to have no trouble fitting in on the streets of Paris? You will make it after just 600 hours
of study.The popular Latin languages-Italian,French,Spanish and Portuguese-require about 600
hours of study to achieve "general professional proficiency"in speaking and reading. They share
many words with English, but differ significantly in meanings.
●German(750 hours)
Interested in reading Karl May's "Wild West"series in its original language? You'll need to
spend 750 hours mastering German first. With nouns that are masculine, feminine and neutral,
verbs that are given various different forms and an extremely strict sentence arrangement,German
may appear impossible to start with. But pronunciation and spelling is straightforward and once you
learn the-admittedly many-rules,that's it.German teachers used to joke that it takes you a year
to say,"I'm travelling on the bus,"but once you're on that bus,it's plain sailing
●Greek(1,100 hours)
Modern Greek is maybe the easiest language to learn that uses a different alphabet.Because
Greek is also a language that's contributed numerous words to English.Indeed,in 1957,Xenophon
Zolotas, the then governor of the Bank of Greece, gave two speeches to the IMF that contained just
Greek loanwords apart from the unavoidable basic English.
●A1abic(2,200 hours)
There's an interesting story about a pharmaceutical (company that advertised painkiller
with three pictures. The left picture depicted a woman with a headache. The middle one showed her
swallowing the pill and the right one had her smiling after the pain had disappeared. It worked

everywhere except in the Arab world, which read it from right to left
It takes the average native English speaker a whopping 2,200 hours to become proficient in
Arabic. But who can resist a language with eleven words for love, five degrees of swearing and
close to 100 words describing a camel?
21.Who is this passage intended for?
A.German speakers.B.Greek speakers.C.English speakers.
D.Arabic speakers
22.Which language makes a great contribution to English vocabulary?
A.Greek.
B.German.
C.Spanish.
D.French.
23.What is special about Arabic?
A.The way it advertises.
B.The habit of reading
C.The time to master.
D.The expression to say love.

At a time when endless scrolling(刷屏)and constant notifications(通知)fill daily life,.a
group of college students at University of California is trying something refreshingly simple:
putting their phones away and reconnecting with the real world.Students on campus have started
hosting "no-phone parties,"gatherings where attendees leave their devices behind and focus instead
on conversation,creativity,and real human relationship.
The events are organized by Project Reboot,a student-led movement focused on helping
young people build healthier relationships with technology. The group is careful to point out that it
is not anti-technology.Instead,its goal is to help students take back control of their attention and
use technology with purposes rather than letting it control them."Technology is neither good nor
bad,"the organization explains."While it has the power to addict and depress,it also has the
potential to inform and inspire."
According to a survey of UC Berkeley undergraduates,78%of students said their phone use
prevents them from "thinking deeply or being creative.""It sucks (that on a regular basis I
am having to fight with my phone and I feel like I am losing control over my life,"student Dawson
Kelly said. That feeling is shared among those students who attend the no-phone gatherings.
Without screens competing for attention, conversations become more meaningful and people
feel more present with one another. Many students involved in the movement say they worry their
generation is losing the ability to truly connect face-to-face.Through small but intentional habit
changes,Project Reboot hopes students can strengthen qualities like carefulness and creativity
while spending less time trapped in endless scrolling.
And the students behind the movement hope their idea spreads far beyond the Berkeley
campus. In a world filled with distractions, they believe putting down a phone for a few hours might
be one of the most powerful ways to reconnect with yourself and the people around you.
28.What is the main goal of Project Reboot according to paragraph 2?
A.To ban technological devices.
B.To prove technology is harmful.
C.To promote healthy digital use.
D.To organize campus entertainment.
29.Why do students like Dawson feel bad?
A.They lack access to modern digital tools
B.Their digital habits control their daily lives
C.They fail to complete academic surveys
D.Their screen time harms their physical health.
30.What is the no-phone movement intended to do?
A.To reduce the students'face-to-face arguments
B.To make students'academic grades better.
C.To make traditional campus parties more popular.
D.To improve real face-to-face communication.
31.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Digital reduction ensures academic success.
B.Putting down phones makes people closer.
C.Smartphones improve young people's creativity.
D.College students should refuse technology completely

For decades, high grades, early medals,or strong test scores are often seen as signs of future
greatness.Talent programs frequently select top-performing children and push them into intensive,
single--discipline(单一学科的)training from a young age.However,.this approach may be flawed.
A team led by Arne Gullich, professor of University Kaiserslautern Landau, found these
高一年级英语试卷第4页共8页
assumptions didn't match how most world-class performers actually developed
Earlier research mainly studied young or sub-elite (performers, such as school
students, youth athletes, and conservatory musicians. What was missing was a close look at adults
who reached the highest level in their fields."Traditional research into giftedness and expertise
didn't sufficiently consider how world-class performers at peak performance age developed in their
early years,"said Gullich.Given all this,a new international research team was formed.
The team reanalyzed data from massive earlier studies, bringing together evidence from
different fields for the first time.In total, they examined the developmental paths of 34,839 top
performers. This group included Nobel Prize winners in science,Olympic medalists, excellent chess
players,etc.
The researchers found early success didn't reliably predict later greatness.First, individuals
who performed best at a young age were usually not the same people who later reached the
world-class level.Second, future top performers tended to not stand out early, and many weren't
among the best in their age group.Third, those who eventually reached peak performance explored
multiple areas early in life.
According to the researchers, trying different disciplines helps individuals discover what truly
fits them best over time, and that varied experiences build stronger learning skills, making it easier
to improve later at the highest level..Those who find an optimal(最适宜的)discipline for
themselves and develop enhanced potential for long-term learning have improved chances of
developing world-class performance,"said Guillich.
"Thus,to support young talent, don't make them specialize in just one discipline too early,"
said Gullich."Provide opportunities to pursue different areas of interest, and support development
in two or three disciplines."A young person might enjoy both mathematics and languages,or
philosophy and geography.Looking ahead, these insights could help design better approaches to
talent development.
32.What does the underlined word "flawed"in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Confusing.
B.Unattractive.C.Discouraging.
D.Unsound.
33.What is the uniqueness of the new study compared to previous research?
A.The focus on comprehensive data
B.The massive financial investment.
C.The dependence on technology.
D.The cooperation between countries.
34.What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A.Ways to choose disciplines.
B.The power ofearly variety.
C.The qualities of top performers.
D.The applications of the findings.
35.Which of the following can be a suitable title?
A.Early Success vs.Later Greatness
B.Tips on Talent Development
C.The power of Early Exploration
D.Secrets of World-class Performers

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In a small town in Michigan, there stood an independent bookstore called Serendipity Books-
a beloved gathering place for over twenty years.Children had learned to read in its cozy corners,
surrounded by piles of picture books.Old friends had met there for coffee and conversation, losing
themselves among the shelves on rainy afternoons. The owner,May,had poured her heart into the
store since 2017,working alongside three part-time employees who felt more like family.
Then came the news. The old building where the bookstore had stood for decades was
scheduled for demolition (to make way for a new development.May had to move, but the
only available space nearby was a smaller storefront just a block away. The thought of packing,
transpo1ting,and reorganizing over9,l00 books was paralyzing(令人瘫痪的).
Each book,after all,held a memory:the worn copy of a childhood favorite,the signed edition
a customer had treasured for years.Hiring a moving company would cost thousands, money she
simply didn't have. For weeks,May lay awake at night, wondering if she should just close the doors
forever.
She shared her despair with a few regular customers-a retired teacher who came in every
Tuesday,a young mother whose daughter had learned to read there."I don't know how I'll ever
move all these books,"she sighed, her voice breaking. They nodded sympathetically but couldn't
think of easy answers.Still, word began to spread through the town.People talked in the grocery
store,at the school pickup line, over morning coffee.
The moving day came.May stood outside the old store, staring at the endless shelves, her heart
a knot of fear and hopelessness. She had no idea how she would get a single book to the new
location, let alone nine thousand. She half-expected to spend the day alone, boxing and crying
Then she heard footsteps-first a few,then dozens,then a crowd.When she turned around,her
breath caught in her throat.

Dear Tony,
Hearing that you want to join a school club to experience campus life more fully and you are
considering choosing between the badminton club and the cycling club,I'd recommend the former.
Badminton is very popular in our school. It's not only a good way to stay active, but also a
fantastic opportunity to socialize and make new friends.Additionally, the club organizes regular
training and fun matches which will help you feel more involved in school life.By comparison,
cycling is not accessible to all, limited by equipment, venue and weather conditions.
I'll be glad to know your wise choice and your benefit from either sport.
Best wishes,
Li Hua
读后续写One Possible Version:
A human chain of nearly 300 residents lined up from the old bookstore to the new one.Book after
book traveled hand to hand along the sidewalk.May recognized the retired teacher who came in
every Tuesday, passing picture books with a gentle smile."I read this in high school,"a teenager
said, holding up a worn novel."This one is signed by the author,"an elderly woman added.
Laughter and memories flowed like the books themselves. In less than two hours, all 9,100 books
had reached their new home.May and her three employees led and busied themselves, sweat and
tears streaming down their faces.
When the last book found its place on the new shelf,May stepped forward, holding back tears.
"Thank you for your help.I almost closed this store,"she said, her voice trembling with excitement
and her eyes misty."I thought I would be boxing these books alone. But you tumned my darkest day
into something I will never forget."A young mother stepped forward."This store belongs to all of
us,"she said.One by one,hands went up,offering to volunteer,to help,to keep the story going.
That day,the community didn't just move 9,100 books-they carried their own story into a new
home.

W:I will take the achievements as a starting point for further progress.I want to be a role model for

W:Hello, everyone. The Eco Group is planning to plant trees in the village of Brookside.
They are in need of volunteers. No experience is necessary. There will be experts on the spot to
direct operations, and equipment will be provided. The Group serves a snack lunch, but evening
meals are not included. The site lies on the western edge of the village of Brookside. You'd better
walk there,as parking will not be available along the road to the west.A large yellow notice will
indicate the site entrance. And the yellow arrow signs will lead you to the site. The site will be quite

muddy,so boots are probably a better idea than trainers if you're doing the digging. But you'll need
something to change into afterwards.Although you won't feel very cold, the site is quite exposed,
so it's a good idea to wrap up well when you're watching. Please remember to bring your own
gardening gloves if you are digging.A brochure will include further information about the day's
program.
