Cumberland Council in the north of England has announced that people taking pebbles (鹅卵石) from beaches will now face fines of up to £1,000.
For many people, collecting pebbles on the beach brings back joyful childhood memories. But few people know that it is actually against the law to remove pebbles—or any other materials—from the beach in the UK.
Introduced decades ago, the Coastal Protection Act was designed to prevent people from taking “free” sediment (沉积物) from beaches for building materials. This may seem unimportant, but research suggests otherwise. Pebbles and other materials on beaches provide a habitat for many creatures. For people who live nearby, pebbles have another value: they reduce coastal flooding and erosion (侵蚀).
The volume of the beach is important to how effective it is at reducing both risks. In fact, the more pebbles and sediment on the beach, the more able the beach is to absorb wave energy. This volume changes naturally over the year, as the beach adjusts to changes in waves over the seasons. Pebbles are transported on and off the beach by waves, sorting different sediment sizes into different areas of the beach. More energetic waves during winter storms can bring larger sediment to the upper beach and form a steep ridge (隆起) of pebbles. The ridge of pebbles at the top is often the first line of natural defence against the power of the sea.
However, human activity can break this balance. While one person taking a few pebbles from the beach may not make a big difference, too many people doing so can have a huge influence. If there are too few pebbles and sand on the beach, the risks of coastal flooding and erosion increase.
Yet, it’s still unclear how pebble beaches react to waves and storms, and scientists are still studying the process. This research can give us clues about how to build effective human-made cobble beaches.
But before we figure it out, it’s necessary to keep the sediment on beaches. As a matter of fact, this is more important than ever in a changing climate, as coastal flooding and erosion are expected to become more frequent and severe.
26. Why was the Coastal Protection Act introduced?
A. To improve beach experiences for tourists.
B. To stop people taking beach sediment.
C. To protect creatures on beaches.
D. To make beaches easier to clean.
27. What does the underlined word “ absorb” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. To deal with sth. successfully.
B. To become part of sth. larger.
C. To use up a great deal of sth.
D. To reduce the effect of sth.
28. Put the following events in the correct order.
①A pebble ridge is formed.
②Stronger waves hit the beach.
③Larger sediment is carried upwards.
④Sediment of different sizes is separated.
A. ④→①→②→③ B. ①→③→②→④
C. ②→④→③→① D. ②→③→①→④
29. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A. We can already build effective cobble beaches.
B. Further research is needed on pebble beaches.
C. Climate change will enlarge beaches.
D. Sediment will become less important.
30. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. How Pebble Beaches React to the Power of the Sea
B. Protecting Coasts from Erosion and Flooding
C. How Beaches Change Through the Seasons
D. Be Careful What You Take from the Beach

Some people believe that self-reflection (自我反思) is a good habit for teenagers. What exactly is self-reflection? It means slowing down and thinking honestly about your own behaviour, feelings and decisions after something has happened.
Many teenagers are too busy with schoolwork. They spend most of their time doing homework or taking part-time after-school classes. They seldom stop to look back on what they have done. They just keep moving forward without thinking. However, self-reflection plays an important role in our growth.
When you reflect, you can see your weak points clearly. For example, you may find that you often lose your temper when you are under great pressure. Then you can try to find ways to control your moods. Besides, self-reflection also helps you know your advantages. You may realize you are good at organizing group activities. This will build up your confidence.
You do not need a long time for self-reflection. You can spend five to ten minutes every night before going to bed. You may ask yourself these simple questions: What did I do well today? What mistake did I make? What should I improve tomorrow?
Self-reflection will not bring quick changes to you. But if you keep doing it every day, little by little you will make great progress.

1. Fang Yuan, ________ head of Sunshine Hospital and ________ excellent heart surgeon, is kind and patient.
A. a; an B. /; an C. /; / D. a; /
2. —What great difficulty you have ________ the balance between schoolwork and hobbies!
—Yes. I find ________ really hard for me to cut back on my painting time.
A. keeping; it B. to keep; that C. keeping; that D. to keep; it
【答案】A
固定搭配have difficulty (in) doing sth.,意为“做某事有困难”,介词in常省略,后接动名词,故第一空填keeping;固定结构find it+形容词+for sb. to do sth.,意为“发现做某事对某人来说是……的”,it作形式宾语,真正的宾语是后面的不定式,故第二空填it。
3. The paper-cut is finished ________ the other one and it looks ________ the work bought from the shop.
A. as well as; as good as B. as good as; as well as C. as well as; as well as D. as good as; as good as
【答案】A
as well as和……一样好,well 是副词,用来修饰动作;as good as和…… 第一空is finished是被动结构,描述动作完成的质量,要用副词well构成as well as。第二空look是系动词,后接形容词 good构成as good as。
4. To fight against global warming, many countries are trying to use new green energy and ________ the use of fossil fuels
A. cut in on B. cut out C. cut off D. cut back on
【答案】D

cut in on打断/插嘴;cut out剪出/删除;cut off切断/中断;cut back on减少/削减。根据“To fight against global warming”可知此处表示减少化石燃料的使用,应填cut back on。

was/got stuck卡住,困住,一般不与by搭配;was/got stuck in陷入(困境等);stick with继续做,支持(某人);stick to坚持。根据“Whenever I...difficulties”可知是陷入困境,应用was/got stuck in,排除A、B项;根据“...my dreams”可知是坚持梦想,应用stick to。
6. ________ Mike ________ his parents travelled abroad this summer holiday because ________ of them could afford the time to go there.
A. Neither... nor; none B. Neither... nor; neither
C. Either…or... ; either D. Either…or; all
【答案】A
Neither... nor... 也不……”;Either... or...
7. Zengzi was a student of Confucius. He once said, “I examine myself three times every day.” This is to tell us ________.
A. how can we correct our mistakes B. why we should respect ourselves

how can we correct our mistakes我们怎样纠正我们的错误,疑问语序;why we should respect ourselves为什么我们要尊重自己;what we need to do to become better我们需要做什么来变得更好;whether we can live a better life我们能否过上更好的生活。根据“He once said, ‘I examine myself three times every day.’ This is to tell us…” 应填what we need to do to become better。
8. Nobody knows ________ we will have a picnic in the park ________ the rain stops this afternoon.
A. that; if B. if; whether C. if; if D. whether; whether
that那个;if如果、是否;whether是否。
9. —The movie The Wandering Earth is fantastic! I have watched it three times.
—Really? Could you tell me ________?
A. where did you watch the movie B. how I can watch this movie
C. that the movie is really popular D. when I could watch the movie
A项where did you为疑问语序;C项由that引导,不符合询问信息的语境;D项could为过去式,时态与“也想观看”的语境不符。
10. —Thanks for offering me so much useful advice on dealing with teenage problems.
—________.
A. Oh, don’t thank B. Don’t mention it C. Never mind D. It’s a good idea me
It’s a good idea me表达本身错误。根据上句“Thanks for offering me so much useful advice”可知,对方在表达感谢,需要用“不客气”来回应,应选Don’t mention it。

B 27. D 28. C 29. B 30. D
根据第三段“Introduced decades ago, the Coastal Protection Act was designed to prevent people from taking ‘free’ sediment from beaches for building materials.”
根据第四段“the more pebbles and sediment on the beach, the more able the beach is to absorb wave energy.”以及“The ridge of pebbles at the top is often the first line of natural defence against the power of the sea.”
根据第四段“More energetic waves during winter storms can bring larger sediment to the upper beach and form a steep ridge of pebbles.”和“Pebbles are transported on and off the beach by waves, sorting different sediment sizes into different areas of the beach.”
根据倒数第二段“Yet, it’s still unclear how pebble beaches react to waves and storms, and scientists are still studying the process.”
文章第一段提到从海滩捡鹅卵石会面临罚款,第三段说明鹅卵石能减少洪水和侵蚀,最后一段强调“it’s necessary to keep the sediment on beaches”。全文围绕不要从海滩带走鹅卵石或沉积物展开,因此最佳标题是“Be Careful What You Take from the Beach”。

61. What does self-reflection mean?
__________________________________________________
62. What can we know about ourselves through self-reflection?
