一、阅读理解
As the sun comes up over Zhangye Danxia Geological Park in Gansu province, the first light shows rolling mountains in many colors. Dark red, orange, green and grey grow brighter in the morning sun. Many visitors ask: “Were these painted?”
The answer is no. The colors are completely natural. Thick layers of sandstone (砂岩) and minerals (矿物质) were laid down when dinosaurs still lived on the Earth. Over millions of years, forces deep inside the Earth pushed them upward, and wind and rain slowly shaped them into what we see today. Some 35 colors can be found in the park, and each layer is like a page from the Earth’s own diary.
The park covers around 1,290 square kilometers. In 2020, it was named a UNESCO Global Geopark (世界地质公园). Five years later, it was voted one of CNN’s “24 Most Unusual Landscapes in the World”.
The park also lies along ancient Silk Road routes. Zhangye, known in ancient times as Ganzhou, was an important stop in the Hexi Corridor. Traders from Central Asia (中亚) once rested their camels (骆驼) here and traded silk for spices (香料). Centuries later, the traveler Marco Polo stayed here.
Mao Guodong, a traveler living in Mexico, returned to China for a two-month journey to explore its natural wonders. “The landscape is breathtaking. It is truly one of nature’s masterpieces,” he said. For him, learning how natural forces shaped the land turned a sightseeing stop into a lesson about the Earth.
1. What do first-time visitors usually do when they see the hills?
A. They want to climb to the top at once.
B. They think the park is too crowded.
C. They doubt whether the colors are real.
D. They believe the hills were built for films.
2. How were the colors of the hills formed?
A. By natural forces over millions of years.
B. By workers who painted the rocks in different colors.
C. By the rivers that once covered the whole park.
D. By the minerals that farmers added to the soil.
3. What do we know about the park from the passage?
A. It lies in the south of Gansu province.
B. It was first opened to visitors in 2020.
C. It is the largest geopark in China.
D. It was listed among the world’s most unusual landscapes.
4. Why does the writer mention Zhangye and Marco Polo?
A. To explain why the park needs better protection.
B. To show the area’s long history as a trading stop.
C. To introduce a famous traveler from Italy.
D. To prove that the Silk Road began in Gansu.
5. What is the passage mainly about?
A. A natural wonder that records the Earth’s history.
B. A travel plan for a two-month journey in China.
C. The way farmers protect the colorful hills.
D. The reason why visitors dislike the park.
