(25-26八年级上·北京·期中)Mum was cooking in the kitchen. She could hear the girls arguing in the living room. It was the third time this week that the sisters argued over nothing. A few minutes later, Maria ran into her bedroom angrily and closed the door heavily.
“Come to the kitchen, young lady.” Mum firmly (坚定地) said to Maria in her best mother tone of voice.
Maria walked into the kitchen and shouted, “I can’t stand living with Felicia another minute. I don’t ever want to talk to her again!”
Mum called out, “Felicia, come to the kitchen right now.” While Felicia was on her way, Mum put two chairs opposite each other but very close together.
“Maria, you sit here and Felicia you sit there.” The girls sat face to face, with their knees almost touching. “Now you look each other in the eye for five minutes.” Mum ordered.

(25-26八年级上·北京海淀·期中)While many people see chores as necessary pains, there are science-based reasons to change your thoughts about chores. It turns out that doing chores is not always in the ways that you might think.
As researchers state here in a study, doing tasks which don’t need a lot of effort allows the mind to float around where it will. Your mind gets a break and allows you to consider old problems with new eyes. In fact, effortless tasks create more great ideas than difficult tasks or just resting. So, doing chores can lead to creative problem-solving.
Chores are exercise snacks for health. The phrase “exercise snacks” refers to small, even tiny, pieces of physical activity, such as standing for a few minutes after sitting for a while. Taking a two-minute walk, or doing a chore like sweeping up the kitchen. Researchers have studied the effects of exercise snacks ranging (范围) from 30 seconds, like walking up a flight of stairs, to 10 minutes, like washing dishes. Some of the health effects include improved memory, reduced risk of some serious diseases, and longer life.
Chores are related to our mental (心理的) health. Completing chores increases (增长) your sense of self-efficacy, known as a person’s belief that they have the ability and skills to reach their goals. Self-efficacy, which was first developed by Professor Albert Bandura in the 1970s, has been shown to increase confidence, low self-efficacy is connected with worries, sadness and hopelessness, while higher self-efficacy is connected with life satisfaction, self-confidence, social connection and growth mindset.
Doing chores can reduce stress. A small study from Florida State University explored whether the chore of dish washing could reduce stress. Using a group of 51 students, they discovered that dishwashers who were asked to be mindful when washing dishes focusing on the smell of the soap, the warmth of the water, and the feel of the dishes— reported a decrease in nervousness by 27 percent and an increase in mental inspiration by 25 percent. Chores that reduce the mess can also reduce stress.
So if you’ve been thinking about cleaning out that junk drawer, do it. You’ll receive more.
1.According to Paragraph 2, the writer may agree that we can ________ by doing chores.
A.get less social B.live a better life
C.become more inventive D.change ways of exercise
2.What can we learn from the passage?
A.We need to eat snacks after sweeping up the kitchen.
B.We can get a sense of achievement by doing chores.
C.Using the soap when washing dishes increases efficacy.
D.Doing chores every day decreases the creative thinking.
3.What’s the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To explain why most people hate doing chores and offer ways to make chores less tiring.
B.To introduce the science-supported advantages of doing chores and encourage people to do chores.
C.To prove that doing chores like washing dishes is the best way to reduce stress and improve creativity.
D.To teach readers how to use different chores to increase self-efficacy and achieve life satisfaction.
(25-26八年级上·北京海淀·期中)In choosing a friend, one should be very careful. A good friend can help you study. You can have fun together and make each other happy. Sometimes you will meet fair weather friends. They will be with you as long as you have money or luck, but when you are down, they will run away. How do I know when I have found a good friend? I look for certain qualities (品质) of character, especially understanding, honesty (诚实) and reliability (可靠).
Above all else, I look for understanding in a friend. A good friend tries to understand how another person is feeling. He is not quick to judge. Instead, he tries to learn from others. There is a fourth quality that makes a friend special. ______. We should enjoy our lives, and we would enjoy our friendship. That is why I especially like friends who are fun to be with. A good friend likes the same things I like. We share experience and learn from each other. A good friend has a good sense of humor, too. He likes to laugh with me. (24-25八年级上·北京·期中)Eighty years ago, when I was 13, I wrote my first letter to Paul and Renee. Paul was my age, and his sister Renee was two years younger; they lived in France. I loved learning languages, so I was happy when my French teacher introduced us as pen pals.
Getting a letter from another country was exciting, and I eagerly awaited their reply. Since their English wasn’t great, after six months, we all started writing in French, which really helped me improve my French.
In 1949, I went to France on holiday to meet them, but Paul had been called up for military service (服役), and Renee was away skiing. Despite this, Renee’s family treated me very well. Over the following years, I visited several times. The first time I met Renee, she picked me up at the station, and we became good friends right away.
I never got to meet Paul. Later, Renee told me he had passed away shortly after leaving the army. Renee and I kept writing to each other, and our friendship grew stronger. We shared stories about our families, hobbies, and life challenges. I moved to South Africa for a while, got married, had children, and changed jobs, but we kept writing letters throughout it all.
Renee never married and worked as a nurse for many years. During my visits, I got to know her whole family, including her aunts, uncles, and distant cousins. I felt so welcome that I never felt like an outsider.
Now, at 93, I still write to Renee. She finds it hard to write now, so she calls me instead. While most people don’t seem to have time for letters anymore, I still enjoy writing them.

(25-26八年级上·北京海淀·期中)The undersea world is very beautiful. Now more and more people want to dive in the water to find the secret there. Scuba diving is a new sport today. It can take you into a wonderful undersea world.
You will find many strange animals in the sea. Some are as large as a school bus. Many sea animals give out light in the dark and some have sharp teeth.
During the day, there is enough light. Here, under the sea, everything is blue and green. When fish swim nearby, you can catch them with your hands. When you have bottles of air on your back, you can stay in deep water for a long time. However, you can’t dive too deep. And you must be very careful when you dive in deep water.
The deep sea is not an easy place to live in. It’s cold, and it’s dark, too. The deeper it is, the less sunlight there is. At about 3,000 feet, there is no light at all. It is very dark in the sea. Many fishes have no eyes. Some have big eyes. A few have eyes on one side.
Besides the cold and the darkness, deep-sea animals face another danger—other animals. Animals eat! They must find food to eat. Many animals eat plants. However, some animals eat meat. This means these sea animals have two big jobs—they need to find animals as food, and they have to try not to become other animals’ meal.
1.In the daytime, when you dive in the sea, you ________.
A.can see everything green and blue B.can’t be in danger
C.can catch nothing D.can’t see anything clearly
2.When you do scuba diving, you can ________.
A.stay in deep water for a long time B.dive very, very deep
C.live in deep water easily D.dive freely without any dangers
3.Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A.When one animal is finding something to eat, it may be eaten by others.
B.At the depth of 3,000 feet under the sea, many animals can find their way by hearing and feeling.
C.You can catch the strange animals in the sea without any danger.
D.It’s difficult to live in the deep sea because it’s too dark and cold.

Sometimes when the rain falls hard and fast on you, it might hurt a little. But what happens when it hits a mosquito?
In 2012, David Hu, a scientist at Georgia Tech, became interested in this problem and decided to do research. He used a high-speed camera so that he could watch the mosquitoes in very slow motion and find out what they’re doing when they’re out in the rain.
What he found is that when a raindrop falls on a mosquito, it’s like when a bus hits a person. Besides, the little insect (昆虫) is hit by a raindrop about once every 20 seconds. So why don’t we see many dead mosquitoes after it rains? A mosquito is as big as a raindrop, but it is much lighter—only 0.002g. This saves its life in raindrop hits. Because the mosquito is so light, when it is hit by a raindrop, it won’t experience a force that is strong enough to kill it.
The study also found that when a mosquito is hit by a raindrop, the insect is pushed by the raindrop and falls together with it. But the mosquito doesn’t get wet easily because it is covered with hairs which keep off water. After dropping about 6 cm, it will roll off the raindrop and fly away.
1.The underlined word “motion” in Paragraph 2 probably means ________.
A.time B.movie C.step D.movement
2.What protects mosquitoes in the rain?
A.Their mouths and their noses. B.Their eyes and their ears.
C.Their legs and their wings. D.Their light bodies and their hairs.
3.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.How Raindrops Hurt Mosquitoes B.When Mosquitoes Are in Danger
C.Why Mosquitoes Aren’t Hurt in Rain D.When Mosquitoes Meet Their Death
(25-26八年级上·北京朝阳·期中)Welcoming four-legged friends into the classroom is becoming popular across the country. And research shows that therapy-dog (治疗犬) programs provide important benefits (好处) for students. According to the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, “Therapy dogs have been called ‘miracle workers’ because of their calming influence on students and teachers.”
There is an obvious difference between service dogs and therapy dogs. Service dogs help those with specific disabilities, such as problems with eyesight. Therapy dogs are trained to provide (提供) health and social-emotional benefits.
Tarah Randazzo is a middle school counselor (顾问) at Greenfield Middle School in Wisconsin. She has a yellow labrador, Archie, a therapy dog that she brings with her to school a couple of days each week. She says students love Archie days, and Archie brings so many positive benefits, like growing attendance, better problem-solving, and just overall calmness to middle school life. “I’ve noticed that when students are really worried about grades, just being near Archie makes a big difference,” Randazzo says. Dogs in the classroom provide both physical and emotional health benefits for students.
According to one study published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), having a dog present in the classroom improves a positive mood and provides an important anti-stress influence on the body. In fact, the simple act of petting a dog has the influence of lowering blood pressure and heart rate. Pet therapy also lowers stress hormones (荷尔蒙). In other words, just being in contact with a therapy dog calms kids down when they’re upset. And lowering feelings of worry and depression (沮丧) enables them to focus on learning.
Perhaps the greatest benefit of therapy dogs in the classroom is the influence on students’ social-emotional development. Loving and lovable, dogs are good listeners who make no judgements. Children get on well with these gentle animals, helping them feel more connected and confident. This helps reduce bad behavior and anger.
The positive influence of therapy dogs begins in life and goes into schools, helping students become more caring and understanding. Let’s support their presence in schools to create a better educational experience for everyone.
1.Why does the writer mention Archie in Paragraph 3?
A.To explain why therapy dogs can calm kids down.
B.To prove therapy dogs are better than service dogs.
C.To show the benefits therapy dogs bring to students.
D.To discuss if therapy dogs improve students’ learning.
2.According to the passage, who would benefit most from therapy dogs?
A.Counselors who train the therapy dogs.
B.Students who feel worried about the grades.
C.Students who have problems with their eyesight.
D.Teachers who want their students to do better in studies.
3.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A.Therapy Dogs: Lesson Planners B.Therapy Dogs: Learning Coaches
C.Therapy Dogs: Classroom Friends D.Therapy Dogs: Classroom Managers
(25-26八年级上·北京海淀·期中)In parts of Africa, people communicate with a wild bird—the greater honeyguide—in order to locate bee nests and harvest their stores of honey. It’s a rare example of cooperation (合作) between humans and wild animals. Brian Wood and Claire Spottiswoode were lead authors on a study about how this valuable partnership is maintained and how it changes in different cultures.
“Our study proves the bird’s ability to learn specific voiced signals that are traditionally used by different honey-hunting communities. This helps people and birds work together in ways that are beneficial for both,” Wood said. “Honeyguides seem to know the landscape well. They know the location of bee nests and then share with people,” Spottiswoode said. “People are eager for the bird’s help.” The honeyguides also benefit from locating the nests: They eat the leftover honey.
Spottiswoode and Wood’s study was done with the Hadza community in Tanzania and the Yao community of northern Mozambique. Before this study, they had already found that the two groups use different ways to attract honeyguides. When a Hadza person wants to work with a honeyguide, they make a whistle (口哨) sound in Mozambique, Yao people do this by making a “Brr!...” sound first, then a “…Hmm!” sound.
Using mathematical models and audio (音频) playback experiments, the team studied these signals. In the experiment, researchers played the same set of recorded sounds to honeyguides in Tanzania and Mozambique. Through this experiment, the researchers wanted to know whether the honeyguides could recognize and prefer the special sounds used by local honey-hunters, or the birds were just naturally attracted to all such sounds.
The honeyguides in Tanzania were over three times more likely to cooperate when hearing the calls of local Hadza people than the calls of “foreign” Yao. The honeyguides in Mozambique were almost twice as likely to cooperate when hearing the local Yao call, compared to the “foreign” Hadza whistles.
The study shows that differences in honeyguide-attracting signals are not random (随机的) but have a practical reason. While honey-hunting, both the Hadza and Yao come across mammals (哺乳动物), but only the Hadza hunt them, using bows and arrows. The Hadza’s hunting might explain the less noticeable whistles they use. Hadza hunters explain that they can avoid being found by their prey (猎物) because their whistles “sound like birds.” However, the signal the Yao use to communicate with the honeyguide can help scare off animals they find dangerous.
1.By cooperating with honey-hunting communities, honeyguides can ________.
A.recognize hunters’ whistle B.locate bee nests easier
C.have more food D.become familiar with the landscape
2.Why did the researchers use the same recorded sounds?
A.To study their mathematical models.
B.To check if they are a natural preference.
C.To see if they increase birds’ ability to find honey.
D.To teach honey-hunting communities how to give signals.
3.What can we learn from Spottiswoode and Wood’s study?
A.The honeyguides prefer calls from the local people.
B.The human-bird relationship can change with new signals.
C.The Yao community hunts animals while looking for bee nests.
D.The signals from the Hadza were more attractive to honeyguides.
4.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.How mammals react to different signals.
B.How signals connect with hunting activity.
C.How hunting skills are used to scare off animals.
D.How whistles help honeyguides to find bee nests.
(24-25八年级上·北京房山·期中)Gather together some good friends and take a walk through the streets. This is what many young people in China enjoy doing when they visit a new city. To them, city walk means “hanging around the city” on foot. They often explore (探索) old buildings or small shops, and enjoy a cup of coffee or local (当地的) snacks.
City walk offers them a way to communicate with a city. It also gives them a chance to meet new people. It can be a guided trip for a small group of people or simply a relaxing walk for one or two. They follow one rule: keep away from famous places and big crowds.
In China, the city walk has become popular and has spread from Beijing and Shanghai to smaller cities. Xiao Yiyi is a young woman living in Changsha. Recently she started six city walk trips in different cities. Her plan is to provide (提供) experiences for visitors to “walk in open-air museums”.
Her Changsha trip includes (包括) more special sights, such as historical buildings from the 19th century and old streets. They even stop to taste the local spicy crayfish (麻辣小龙虾) along the way. Her group is usually made up of about six people. Her events last about half a day.
Some cities, such as Beijing, have included city walks in their plans to help develop cultural tourism. Shanghai has created city walk trips and is trying to help tourists reach much farther places by public transport.
Now, the idea of a city walk is new to most Chinese people. However, people working in the tourist industry believe it has a bright future. Zhang Zhi is a tour guide from Beijing. He said that tourists nowadays are paying more attention to personalized travel services (服务). Many tour guides are also sharing their city walk experiences online to attract (吸引) more customers.

At Riverdale High School, eighth-graders Alex and Max were best friends. Alex was a top student who loved everything neat and organized. He always scored high on tests and was known for his perfect projects. Max, on the other hand, was a bit wild and carefree. He often found himself in trouble and spent more time in the principal’s office than in class. Yet, their friendship showed how people with different 1 could get along well.
One day, the school announced a science fair. Alex, ever the perfectionist, immediately began brainstorming ideas for his project. He wanted to create something amazing and poured all his energy into his work. Max, however, didn’t care at first, thinking he could 2 complete a project at the last minute. Moved by the heartfelt gesture, Alex made his way toward Max. When their eyes met, all the anger and hurt faded away. Max took a deep breath and found the courage to apologize (道歉). “I messed up, Alex,” he 6 sincerely. Alex nodded, tears welling up in his eyes. “I should have given you another chance, he said softly. Max smiled. “And I should have been the friend you truly trusted.” They hugged, and at that moment, their friendship was 7 .

I’m excited today. That’s because my best childhood friend Molly came back home late last night. I haven’t seen her in FOUR years!
I still remember the day Molly came to the world. It was March 20th, 2016—about two years after me. Molly was so 1 that she soon became one of the stars here at Kunming Zoo. There was always a large 2 of visitors outside our playground, but most of these people were coming to see her only.
Molly and I played together every day until one evening in April 2018 when she told me she would go to a remote (遥远的) place. The next morning, I found her cage 3 . The zookeepers told me that Molly was being sent to a zoo in Henan. It was the 4 day of my life—we hadn’t even said goodbye to each other. I have never stopped 5 her since that day. “Will she have difficulty getting used to the northern climate? Will she continue to be treated well?” I thought. Nobody could help answer these questions.
One day, I heard from several zoo visitors that Molly had been trained to perform acrobatics (杂技) and carry tourists around on her back. The handlers (驯兽员) forced her to learn tricks. The news 6 shocked me. How I wished this was not true! Although I also heard that many people had been asking the government to save Molly, I still couldn’t 7 worrying about my friend.
I feel lucky that I have been taken good care of. In many other zoos, however, elephant shows are common while the living conditions are awful. As I grew up, I slowly realized the severity (严重性) of this problem. Every year on August 12th—World Elephant Day—people call for better protection for us. As an elephant, I think this is not 8 . I wish there were an Elephant Day every month.

Shooting Hoops with Dad
It was still light out, and Dad wasn’t home yet. He worked all day cleaning pools.
Dad once told me cleaning pools felt like doing 1 . It was like being a magician, turning the water from cloudy to clear. Lately, though, it didn’t seem like Dad saw a lot of magic anywhere. Yesterday he came home and told us he had lost many customers because of the economic (经济的) downturn. I could tell he was 2 when he came home each night.
One day, my brother and I were playing basketball. Then, Dad’s old car arrived. It was earlier than when he usually arrived home.
“Hey, guys!” Dad said as he got out. He couldn’t 3 the worry in his eyes.
“Want to shoot a few hoops, Dad?” I asked, knowing how much he loved basketball and thinking maybe it might 4 him up.
“Sure,” he said, opening his eyes and smiling a weary smile.
My brother passed the ball to him, and Dad caught it. He threw the ball toward the basket. It looked 5 . Each time he held the ball in both hands between his knees, bent (弯曲) his legs slightly, and looked up at the basket. It looked like he was a chicken getting ready to lay an egg. Then he swung the ball forward and back before dropping straight into the 6 . “Whoa, what a shot!” Dad said. He did a little victory dance, and smiled in a way that I hadn’t seen in a long time.

I’m only twelve years old, but I know…sadness and the fear of death very well. My grandfather has been smoking since he was a young teenager, and now he has a terrible disease which makes it hard for him to breathe. Two weeks ago, he had an operation. The doctors thought that his days were numbered, but 1 he got a little better. He was taken off the machine that helped him breathe, but still, he couldn’t talk.
While my grandfather was in hospital, my mother and I flew to Pittsburgh to be with him. We were very fearful that we wouldn’t see him again.
When we reached my grandfather’s hospital room, I was surprised by his 2 . He looked so weak. He was hardly even able to speak. Somehow though, he managed to say, “I…you.”
“You what, Grandpa?” I asked. He didn’t have the 3 to answer me. He had used up all his strength with those two words, “I…you.”
The next morning, I had to leave with my mother. I couldn’t stop thinking about what he’d worked so hard to tell me. It wasn’t until I was back home in Georgia that I learned what he had tried to say.
A week after we returned home, my family received a phone call from one of the nurses in the hospital. She told us that my grandfather had said, “Call my granddaughter and tell her ‘love’.” At first, I didn’t understand why he would just say, “love”. Why not “I love you?” Then it 4 me. The day we were in the hospital, he had been trying to say, “I love you.” After hanging up the phone, I sat on the bed and cried. I was really 5 . Even though he was at his weakest, he’d never stopped caring about his granddaughter.
After many weeks, my grandfather was finally able to 6 . I began to call him every night. Normally, he had to 7 after about five minutes because he was too weak. No matter what, though, every time we hung up, he would say, “I love you” and “I’d do anything for you.” These, along with his moving words,
“You’re the only reason I live,” is the best compliment (赞美) I have ever received.
My grandfather is still very ill, and I know we don’t have much time. I feel very 8 that he has shared his feelings with me. The most important thing I’ve learned is that a simple “I love you” is really not simple. It’s a reason for living.

Leaving his smartphone and computer at home, Yang Hao, a 32-year-old doctoral student in Shanxi province, took a trip in the old-fashioned way last year. Over the course of 134 days, he visited 68 counties and cities in 24 provinces and regions across China, and read 40 books.
His journey was inspired (启发) by a screen time notification (通知) from his iPhone that he was spending almost seven hours a day on his phone each day. He was shocked. Then he had an idea of leaving his phone and computer at home to face the challenges of a digital-free (无数字化的) life.
Last Nov. 27, Yang set off from Taiyuan with a large backpack carrying clothing, two cameras, maps, his ID card, bank cards, cash, pens, a notebook, and three books. During the trip, Yang experienced lots of challenges. Without a phone, he couldn’t book a hotel online. He wasn’t allowed in the Hubei Provincial Museum because the museum required reservation (预约) in advance and he couldn’t reserve a ticket online. There were lots of situations like this.
On the other hand, leaving his phone and computer behind, Yang got really rewarding experiences. Without travel bloggers, books and museums became his guides. In Hunan province, Yang retraced (重走) Shen Congwen’s trip in Xiangxi Sanji by boat along the Yuanjiang River about 90 years ago. After reading historical documents, Yang followed those explorers’ footsteps and visited Taklimakan Desert in southern Xinjiang. Also, because writing letters was his only way to keep in touch with family and friends, he rediscovered the pleasure of writing letters.
Yang returned home on April 9. He didn’t want to turn his phone or computer on, because he got used to a quiet, peaceful life without the Internet.
His old life soon returned. But now, Yang keeps a degree of distance (一定的距离) from the Internet. He’s busy making a documentary (纪录片) about his journey. “I hope to offer a different perspective (视角) on seeing the world, whether on screen or through my words,” Yang says.
1.How did he take the trip last year?
2.Where did he set off?
3.What became his guides?
4.Would you like to have such a trip without the Internet? Why or why not? (Please give at least two reasons.)

Now more and more Chinese teenagers find life more difficult without their parents. They don’t know how to do housework, because their parents do almost everything for them at home.
Mary is 14 years old. One day, her parents went on a trip, so she was alone at home. At first, she was happy because her parents were not in. She could do everything that she liked. But when it was six o’clock in the afternoon, she felt hungry. “Oh, it’s time to have dinner. Where can I get my food?”, she said to herself. Later, she found some meat and vegetables in the fridge (冰箱), but she didn’t know how to cook them. At last, she could only go to a restaurant to eat.
Many teenagers have the same problem as Mary. So I think they should learn some life skills, like cooking, cleaning up their rooms or dressing themselves. They shouldn’t depend too much on their parents.
1.Why do more and more Chinese teenagers not know how to do housework?
2.How did Mary feel at first when her parents were not at home?
3.Did Mary eat dinner at home at last?
4.Do you think it’s necessary for teenagers to do housework? Why or why not?

Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. That is why some friendships don’t last very long. To have a friend, you must learn to be one. You must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. To be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous (慷慨的); be understanding.
Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If you don’t tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you haven’t been honest, you may lose your friend’s trust.
Generosity (慷慨) means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You don’t have to give your lunch money or your clothes. Instead, you have to learn how to share things you enjoy, like your hobbies and your interests. Then you will want to share your ideas and feelings. By sharing them you help your friend know you better. These tell your friend what is important to you.
Everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. Turning to a friend can be the first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend, you must listen and understand. When you try to put yourself in your friend’s place, you can understand the problem better.
No two friendships are ever exactly alike. But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friends, you must practise honesty, generosity and understanding.
1.Why don’t some friendships last very long?
2.What may happen if a friend finds out that you aren’t honest?
3.When can we understand a friend’s problem better?
4.If you have a small disagreement (意见不合) with a good friend, what will you do to solve the problem and protect your friendship? (List at least two points.)

Have you ever seen a koala somewhere? Koalas, which are often called koala “bears”, are tree-climbing animals and are seen as national symbols of Australia. However, recently the Australian government has announced (宣布) that koalas are endangered animals across much of the country.
As a matter of fact, the country lost 30% of its koala population between 2018 and 2021, especially in New South Wales, according to a report from the Australian Koala Foundation. If nothing was done, New South Wales’ koalas would die out by 2050, research in June 2020 said. “This must be a wake-up call to Australia and the government to move much faster to protect the cute animals,” Josey Sharrad, a manager with the International Fund for Animal Welfare, said seriously. Koalas are dying out all over the country because of the climate change and the fast development of cities. People have seen some places that look like the moon—with dead and dying trees everywhere.
After WWF-Australia and the International Fund for Animal Welfare called on the government to announce koalas as endangered in April, the government promised they would get more public support and protect koalas’ home—they live in the forests and woodlands.
The Australian government is now doing its best to collect money to protect koalas. On the one hand, it has spent $13 million in helping improve their living places. On the other hand, the government plans to spend another $36 million doing better health research and medical support to further help koala programs over the next four years.
“We should never have allowed things to get to the point where we are at risk of losing a national symbol,” Environment Minister Susan Ley said.
1.What has the Australian government announced recently?
2.Why are koalas dying out all over the country?
3.Where do koalas live in Australia?
4.Do you think koalas will have better living places? Why do you think so? ( Please give at least two reasons )
(25-26八年级上·北京·期中)The pumpkin in Tony Scott’s backyard weighs almost as much as a small car. He’s been taking care of it for months, feeding it fertilizer (肥料) and covering it with a blanket at night to keep it at a fine temperature. “I’ve never seen anything grow this fast,” said Scott, an engineer from New York. He owns a pumpkin patch covering about 50 acres (英亩).
Every year, growers like Scott push their pumpkins to the limit (限制). They compete in annual weigh-offs with large fruits that are well over 2,000 pounds (900 kilograms). Scott’s pumpkin took third place this year. And he received 1000 dollars award in the competition.
Pumpkins aren’t the only crops that can get giant. Other members of the gourd family like cucumbers and watermelons can get giant, too. But only pumpkins are especially giant and have got a place of honor at fall festivals and Halloween fairs. There are some important things to know when growing giant pumpkins. Firstly, a giant pumpkin starts with the perfect seed. Growers choose seeds that have produced large pumpkins in the past or test new ones. Scott and many other growers choose the tried-and-true Atlantic Giant pumpkin seeds. Besides, the right water, nutrients (营养物) and care are also needed to consider.
Giant pumpkins need lots of water in a day and make their own food from sunlight just like other plants do. Growers remove smaller pumpkins so all the water and nutrients get into a single fruit. “That helps make it extra big in a way that you might not see in the wild,” said Alcea Borsuk, a plant scientist at the New York Botanical Garden. Scott’s pumpkin is also lighter in color because he covers it with a tarp during the day, protecting it from sunlight.
After the all-important weighing competition, Scott shows off the giant pumpkin at various themed events and drives it around on a trailer (拖车). At last, he gives it to the exhibition. On the way to events, he often gets stopped by people who ask what he’s got in the back. “The first question they ask is, ‘Is it real?’ ” Scott says. “Where would you buy a man-made pumpkin this big?” He is proud of growing such giant pumpkins, and he realizes hard work pays off in the end.
1.How heavy is the pumpkin in Tony Scott’s backyard?
2.What needs to be considered to grow giant pumpkins?
3.Why is Scott’s pumpkin lighter in color?
4.What do you think of growing giant pumpkins? Why? (At least 2 reasons)

At first the girls moved their bodies from side to side. Mum said firmly, “You must look at each other for five minutes. Each minute you don’t make eye contact means another minute sitting in the chairs.” They both wanted out, so they had to sit there and looked at each other.

He puts himself in the other person’s place, and he tries to think of ways to be helpful. He is also a good listener.
At the same time, however, a good friend is honest. He does not look for faults in others. He notices their good points. In short, a friend will try to understand me and accept me.
Another quality of a friend is reliability. I can always depend on a good friend. If he tells me he will meet me somewhere at a certain time, I can be sure that he will be there. If I need a favor, he will do his best to help me. If I am in trouble, he will not run away from me.
That is how we share in the joy of being friends. And I know that he is looking for the same quality in me.

A.有钱的朋友 B.酒肉朋友 C.信任的朋友 D.诚实的朋友

A.A special friend who has money or luck

Writing to Renee has given me a broader view of the world beyond the UK. Most importantly, it has given me the longest friendship I’ve ever had.

【答案】1.D 2.D 3.C

2.细节理解题。根据文章第三段“A mosquito is as big as a raindrop, but it is much lighter—only 0.002g. This saves its life in raindrop hits.”以及第四段“But the mosquito doesn’t get wet easily because it is covered with hairs which keep off water.”可知,蚊子在雨中不会被伤害是因为它们身体轻盈,且体表有毛发可以防水。故选D。
3.最佳标题题。根据文章内容,特别是第三段“So why don’t we see many dead mosquitoes after it rains?”以及全文对蚊子在雨中如何生存的解释,可知文章主要解释了为什么蚊子在雨中不会被伤害。因此,最佳标题为“Why Mosquitoes Aren’t Hurt in Rain”。故选C。

I’m excited today. That’s because my best childhood friend Molly came back home late last night. I haven’t seen her in FOUR years!

I’m only twelve years old, but I know…sadness and the fear of death very well. The doctors thought that his days were numbered, but 1 he got a little better. He was taken off the machine that helped him breathe, but still, he couldn’t talk.

(25-26八年级上·北京·期中)阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
【答案】1.Because too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. 2.You may lose your friend’s trust. 3.When we try to put ourselves in our friend’s place. 4.①I will communicate with my friend honestly to express my own ideas and listen to his/her opinions. ②I will try to put myself in my friend’s place to understand his/her thoughts and be more understanding.

4.根据第三段“Then you will want to share your ideas and feelings. (25-26八年级上·北京·期中)阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
【答案】1.Recently the Australian government has announced that koalas are endangered animals across much of the country. 2.Because of the climate change and the fast development of cities. 3.They live in the forests and woodlands. 4.
Yes. Because the Australian government is trying its best to collect money to protect koalas and they will get more public support to protect koalas’ home./No. Because the climate change and the fast development of cities are still serious problems, which may continue to threaten koalas’ living places.

I think growing giant pumpkins is a challenging but rewarding hobby. Firstly, it requires a lot of knowledge and skills, such as selecting the right seeds, providing appropriate water and nutrients, which can enrich my horticultural knowledge. Secondly, when successfully growing a giant pumpkin, it can bring a great sense of achievement. Moreover, it can also attract people’s attention and become a topic of conversation.
