I took a deep breath and walked through the front door, my arms full of groceries. A challenge lay ahead of me, someone who could hardly boil water: cooking the Easter Sunday dinner. What if I made everyone sick? It could truly be our family’s last super meal.
Making the holiday meal was my brother’s job, not mine. I could never fill his shoes. Peter had died in September at the age of 45 from a heart attack, but he’d been a natural in the kitchen all his life. He planned every course in detail, from the crescent rolls to the Dutch apple pie.
My family was lost without him, and we went out to dinner for Thanksgiving and ordered pizza for Christmas. By the time Easter rolled around, though, I couldn’t bear the idea of another holiday surrounded by takeout (外卖食品) boxes. Peter would have hated that. To him, there was nothing more important than a meal made with love. So I convinced Mom that we should cook Easter dinner together. But we were terrible cooks.
I had been thinking what to cook for Easter dinner. I’d bitten off more than I could chew. No one could do this half as well as Peter.
I stepped into the family room. Mom was still at church, but her newspaper was opened on the coffee table, to the sports section, as usual. She was a huge Notre Dame women’s basketball fan, and the featured story was about the forward Devereaux Peters. I read the headline and nearly dropped my grocery bags, Filling Peters’ Shoes.
That afternoon, cooking in the kitchen, I didn’t feel so alone. Mom and I pulled together and the Easter feast was not that bad. The ham may have been a little dry, but it was all made with love-just like Peter would have wanted.
24. What would Peter have preferred to do if holidays had come? ______
A. To go out to have dinner. B. To order pizza.
C. To show off his cooking skills. D. To cook a big dinner for his family.
25. The text tells us that ______.
A. the Easter dinner was the family’s last dinner
B. Mom persuaded the author to cook the Easter dinner
C. Peter enjoyed cooking a dinner with love
D. their Easter dinner this year was a complete failure

A. she wasn’t confident in cooking the Easter dinner
B. she was not able to eat a lot of food
C. the Easter dinner made her sick
D. she couldn’t cook the dinner alone
27. What might be the best title for the text? ______
A. Cooking in the Kitchen B. Filling Peter’s Shoes C. Happy Easter Day D. Terrible Cooks

Just by typing a few keywords and waiting a few seconds, a picture comparable to that painted by a human artist appears on screen. In some paintings created by AI, an elderly man can become a handsome animated image, and pets can be turned into adorable cartoon girls or boys. Ordinary people without any painting skills can be the possessors of a wonderful artwork with just a few taps of the keyboard.
However, new things are always accompanied by controversy (争议). Issues such as whether AI art generators will replace human artists, and the copyrights on AI paintings are being hotly debated.
Huang Ge, an illustrator from Shanghai, said that it usually takes several hours or days to complete one illustration. But with AI art generators, the efficiency is greatly improved. Ding Jiao, a comic artist, considers the popularity of AI art generators reasonable as many people who are not good at drawing can create great works through them and they can satisfy users’ curiosity.
So is AI painting gradually replacing human painting? In the hot topic “Using a picture to prove that human artists will never be replaced by AI” online, many netizens uploaded their paintings to prove that humans are better than AI.
“Though AI technology has developed rapidly, AI cannot replace humans as it can just copy human behavior. The warmth and inspiration in human creations are irreplaceable,” said Ding Daoshi, an independent analyst in the Internet sector.
Another controversial issue is that there is no consensus (共识) of who owns the copyright of AI art. Some users have openly sold their AI paintings and earned money, but it is still a gray area about whether these artworks belong to the users, the digital tool developers or even AI. Ding Daoshi noted that the various sides should get together to debate the issue and come up with some accepted rules as soon as possible, because AI is already involved deeply into the lives of human beings.
28. What can ordinary people achieve with AI art generators in a few seconds? ________
A. Learn advanced painting skills. B. Sell their paintings for huge profits.
C. Replace professional artists completely. D. Create impressive artworks without drawing ability.
29. What is Ding Daoshi’s attitude toward AI replacing human artists? ________
A. Human creativity and warmth cannot be replaced.
B. AI will soon replace humans completely.
C. AI is superior to humans in every way.
D. AI lacks commercial value.
30. What does the underlined phrase “gray area” in paragraph 6 probably mean? ________
A. A dark shadow. B. A colorful picture.
C. An unclear or undecided situation. D. A hidden place.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text? ________
A. The End of Human Artists B. AI Art Generators: Innovation and Controversy
C. How to Sell AI Paintings Online D. AI Art: Fast, Fun and Perfect
D
Language gradually shifts over time. Much research examines how social and environmental factors influence language change, but very little deals with the forces of human cognitive (认知的) selection that fix certain words into the dictionary. For an extensive new study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, scientists investigated just that.
In an experiment much like a game of telephone, thousands of participants read English-language stories and rewrote them to be read by other participants, who then rewrote them for others. Only certain words from the first stories survived in the final versions. Researchers analyzed the word types speakers consistently favored, theorizing that such preferences drive language change over time. The scientists also separately analyzed two large collections of English historical texts from the past two centuries, containing more than 40 billion words — again seeing only certain types survive.
The results show three features that give words an “evolutionary (进化的) advantage” by helping them stick in the brain: First, words typically acquired at an early age (such as “hand” “uncle” or “today”) are stabler. Next, concrete words remain better than abstract ones: “dog” persists longer than “animal”, which persists longer than “organism”. Lastly, emotionally exciting words — whether negative or positive — tend to continue to exist.
Early language-evolution models assumed that language becomes increasingly complex over time. But Indiana University Bloomington cognitive scientist Fritz Breithaupt says the new study supports a more recent theory that language finally gets more efficient and easier to understand.
Still, as the study notes, “the English language is not baby talk.” Breithaupt explains: “We shift toward simple language, but then we also grab complex language that we need.” New words that address the complexity of modern life may somewhat balance out this shift.
32. What is the purpose of the new study? ________
A. To find out why language gradually shifts over time.
B. To present society is a key factor in language change.
C. To identify how cognitive selection affects language change.
D. To figure out what words are easily included in the dictionary.
33. What were the participants asked to do during the experiment? ________
A. Play games on the phone.
B. Read stories to other participants.
C. Rewrite what they read for others.
D. Analyze the words they prefer to use.
34. Which words have the most evolutionary advantage according to the new study? ________
A. Head, imagination and happy. B. Mouth, horse and disappointed.
C. Insect, fortune and competition. D. Soccer, organism and adventure.
35. What is Fritz Breithaupt’s attitude towards the new study? ________
A. Tolerant. B. Uncaring. C. Doubtful. D. Approving.

Whether you buy art for your home or admire it in galleries and museums, establishing your taste is a personal journey. There are countless commercial galleries, museums, and increasingly accessible platforms like social media. (36) Here are some tips from leading art collectors on how to develop your taste.
One of the surest ways to establish your artistic interests is to look at as much art as you can. Go to museum exhibitions and to galleries. Read art magazines. See an exhibition even if it is not a period you would ever take an interest in. You will learn to appreciate quality, and your eye will see what great art is. (37)
The process of developing artistic taste involves multiple dimensions that go beyond simple visual appreciation. “I sit with the piece and pay attention to how it settles in me — my throat, my stomach. (38) ” said Shaokao Cheng, co-founder of a luxury design company. As he grew his personal collection, Cheng approached art not for its potential financial gain, but rather how it makes him feel.
(39) Getting to know them and their stories can expand your experience as a collector and enthusiast. Reaching out directly to the artists builds a personal connection to the piece, making the work feel not just seen, but understood.
Study the art market, but not too closely. (40) While understanding market dynamics can be helpful, the most rewarding aspects of art appreciation come from genuine personal connections with artworks and their creators.
A. Artists are the lifeblood of the art world.
B. Then in time, you will find something that you love.
C. These provide a wealth of places to engage with art.
D. I always go to museums and galleries to see art exhibitions.
E. That physical response shows more than any trend ever could.
F. Market research is secondary to personal connection with artworks.
G. Online markets have overturned how people appreciate and buy art.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Living in the shadow of my elder sister who already had her life planned out since she entered middle school, I was always undecided about everything.
When I was in high school, I would still try one thing for a week and then abandon it in the next week. Although I kept searching for the beginning of the rainbow, I kept changing my dream from becoming a vet to an astronaut. I always thought there would be better options available to me. Each time, my parents would shake their heads and ask me, “Why can’t you be more like your sister? What are you going to do with your life? Aren’t you interested in anything at all?”
Each time, I would shrug (耸) my shoulders and my parents usually stopped talking, at least for the moment. I was not sure if they had given up or anticipated the same dull reply, “I couldn’t answer all of your questions right now.”
I knew my parents, just like other parents, had high expectation of me and that they really wanted me to achieve success. I also knew that my arguments were too childish.
“Your grades aren’t high enough. No good colleges are going to accept you, dear. We don’t want to pay so much money for nothing, either, “my mother said one day by the end of my second year in high school.
“Certainly, I will go to a good college, “I replied with as much confidence as I could summon. “No matter what you say.”
After the argument with my mother, I knew it was a crucial year at high school. I had to take action now. So, during the summer vacation, no longer did I sit back and let my parents mistake me for a bad boy. Instead, I started to review all the knowledge I had learned and did it with all my heart. I also turned to my sister for help whenever necessary.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

66. Dear Chris,
I’m a student in your Western Art Appreciation course this term. I’ve noticed that quite a few classmates seem unengaged during class.
One possible reason is that the course materials are somewhat challenging, making it difficult for some to fully grasp and participate actively. Additionally, the lack of interactive activities may discourage students from voicing their opinions.
To improve this, I suggest incorporating more group discussions or case studies related to Western art, which could stimulate interest and encourage participation. Also, providing some background information or simpler explanations before diving into complex topics might help.
Thank you for your consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
67. A few days after the college entrance examination,I received a call from my teacher. He told me he received a strange letter from a famous university in Shanghai. He said that the envelope was very different and that it seemed to contain a postcard.【高分句型一】He urged me to go to his office immediately. But I hesitated for a long time, wondering whether it was a rejection or an acceptance letter.【高分句型二】Finally,I asked my mother to go with me.(作者得到老师通知去学校取通知书以及作者拿到通知书前的心理感受)
Having taken the letter from my teacher, I tried to open it. But my hands kept shaking so violently that it dropped to the floor. My mother picked it up and opened it very carefully. Out of the envelope came a beautiful card with the words “You are admitted to...” in bold golden letters. As a matter of fact, it was beyond my wildest dream and I doubted whether I was dreaming. Then I was drawn back to reality by my teacher’s and my mother’s congratulations.(作者打开信封看到录取通知书的过程和心情)

1. 【原文】W: Tony, can you give me a lift to school on your way to work?
M: I’m afraid I can’t. My car had a flat tyre yesterday. Now it’s in the garage. You can carpool with others.
W: Oh, no. It’s hard to find a car in the rush hour. Luckily, the subway station is an easy walk from here.
2. 【原文】W: Excuse me. Do we have to take our luggage from our room before 11:00 a. m.?
M: Normally it’s at 11:00 a. m., yes, but you can have a late checkout until 2:00 p. m. if you like.
W: Great. That will give me more time to pack up my suitcase. I think I can be finished by 1:00 p. m.
3. 【原文】M: Good afternoon. I’m phoning about the position advertised in this morning’s paper.
W: Oh, yes. Hold on please. I’ll put you through to the manager.
4. 【原文】M: I see you’ve bought a new laptop.
W: Yes, it starts up quickly, though to be fair the old one isn’t slow. I began taking this new one to work in the end as it’s so much lighter.
5. 【原文】M: Have you heard about that new computer game Space Giants?
W: Yeah, I read about it in the gaming magazine Gameworld.
M: Everyone’s talking about it on the Internet too. I prefer to see if new games are popular with my mates though — that will give me a clearer idea of whether they’ll be any good.
6~7. 1.
【原文】W: Can you help me check these? They need to go out this afternoon.
M: Sure. Are they for your study abroad trip?
W: Yes. I need to get all my application forms in the mail today.
M: All right. Give me the checklist.
W: Here you are.
M: OK. Let’s see. Er, you’re going to Canada? I thought it was America.
W: Yeah. I have a relative there. Actually, I wanted to go to Oxford University in England, but I didn’t pass the exam.

W: I do feel ill. I think it’s a bad cold.
M: Maybe you are not used to the weather conditions.
W: Something like this, and the hot food there.
M: The important thing is you have been too busy recently.
W: Yes, I need to have a good rest. Can I have a day off?
M: Of course. You have finished the task a week ahead of schedule.
W: Thanks, I think I will go to see the doctor first.
M: Take a good break.

W: The main issue is my fridge — it’s just not cooling. And could you also have a look at the bathroom? The water heater and washing machine don’t work well either.
M: Okay, I’ll start with the fridge and then check the bathroom issues.
W: That’s great.
M: Checking done. Your fridge just needs a new part. The water heater is also an easy fix, but the washing machine will need to be replaced.
W: What will happen to my old one if I replace it?
M: We can take it away for recycling at no extra charge. If you’d like to donate it, we can contact a local charity.
W: Recycling seems a better choice!

【原文】M: Good evening. My name is Henry Stone. I’ve made a reservation.
W: Just one moment, sir. I’ll check… I’m sorry, there’s no record of your reservation. When did you book?
M: Last week. I booked a standard room for the 16th of January online.
W: I do apologize but something seems to have gone wrong.
M: Well, can you just give me a room anyway?
W: Neither standard rooms nor single rooms are free, sir. There are only luxury rooms. They’re $350 per night.
M: $350! But the room I booked was $60.
W: I’m sorry, sir. Well, why don’t you try calling another hotel?
M: I’m sorry but I don’t think that’s fair. I made a reservation. I have an email from you to prove it.
W: I’m very sorry, sir. There must have been a problem with the computer.
M: Can I make a suggestion? Why don’t you offer me the luxury room for the price of standard room? After all, it’s your hotel that made the mistake so you should find a solution.
W: Well, I’m not sure, sir. I’ll have a word with my manager. OK, sir. My manager says that is fine.
M: Great. Thank you. And can I get an extra bed if we need one?
W: Yes, of course. Could you please show me your ID card?
M: Sure. Here it is.
W: OK. Here’s your key card.

17~20. 1. 【原文】 Hello, my name’s David Watts. Today I’m going to talk about remote working in the future. Companies are unwilling to accept this for a variety of reasons — because it’s not what they’re used to, because they’re afraid their employees will be lazy if they’re not in the office, because they just don’t see the benefits in allowing their employees to work from home — but those companies that have accepted remote working, and I mean gladly accepted, have seen it for what it is: an excellent opportunity to develop. At my company, about 50% of our full-time, permanent employees now work from home at least three days a week, and the other 50% work from home one day a week, with the exception of departments such as finance, HR and reception. And you know what that means? It means we can rent a smaller space and lower our monthly overhead costs. It means our employees who have children no longer need to quit their job to take care of them. They can stay at home with their kids, look after them and at the same time respond to phone calls and emails. It means that our employees are happy, because they save money and time and avoid the stress of traveling to work, and we are happy because they are doing their job better as a result of their flexibility.
