And one way to stand out from the competition is to have a logo that works. Today i'm going to talk about four features of a good logo. First of all, people need to be able to recognize your logo quickly. They should be able to see IT from far away and instantly know what IT is. They shouldn't have to read that. You can use shapes and colors to make your logo noticeable. Secondly, the logo needs to communicate something about the brand. What's the idea that you want a highlight? Maybe you want the logo to suggest that your brand is global, user friendly or old fashioned? You decide. Next, don't use a style that's going to look old in a couple of years. Look for a style that will stand the test of time. If the logo does include writing, make sure that people can read IT, especially if the wording is unusual. Finally, you want to make sure your logo looks good in different sizes. Some logo have too many minor details. This can be hard to see when the logo is small. Also make sure that IT looks good in black and White. Some logs look good in color, but terrible in black and White. Okay, now i'm going to show you some examples of good logo designs from different companies. Well, a logo is a design that is the official sign of a brand. I am writing to offer some practical suggestions to improve the conditions of our school canteen, aiming to help us have a more comfortable and pleasant dining experience. First of all, I wonder if it is possible for the cook to add various dishes to the menu because we are tired of eating the same food every day. In addition, it couldn’t be better if the food is served with a friendly smile, which will make us feel refreshed after studying for a long time. Finally, some soft music could be played to provide students with a more enjoyable eating environment. Thanks for reading my letter. I would appreciate it if you could take my suggestions into consideration./I would be grateful if my suggestions could be adopted./I hope my suggestions can meet with your approval. Yours sincerely, Li Hua Possible version 2: Dear Principal, I am Li Hua, a student from Senior One. I’m writing to put forward some suggestions concerning our school canteen, with the hope of improving students’ dining experience. To start with, more varieties of food ought to be offered. Since the present choices are rather limited, a wider range of dishes can cater to students’ different tastes. Meanwhile, serving more seasonal vegetables will benefit our health. Besides, long waiting times are common during rush hours. More service windows are supposed to be opened to ease the crowd. Last but not least, some tables stay unclean after meals, thus requiring immediate table cleaning to create a more comfortable dining atmosphere. I would appreciate it if you could take my proposals into consideration. Thank you for your time. Yours sincerely, Li Hua 听力原文 (Text 1) M: I’m planning to schedule all my classes on Tuesday and Thursday this term. It should give me a full day off in between. D. £4.00 B Like a lot of Canadians, Andrew Suboch grew up knowing little about Canada’s national game — lacrosse (长曲棍球), other than watching some neighbours pass a ball using old wooden sticks. It was only when his two children started playing the game as part of their training for hockey (冰球) that he took much notice. His son, Jack, went on to excel at lacrosse and he now plays for the Vancouver Warriors of the National Lacrosse League. Both children came up through the Mimico Minor Lacrosse Club, in the Toronto area, which has been around since 1890. When the number of players in the kids’ league began falling in 2014, Mr. Suboch, who is a personal injury lawyer in Toronto, volunteered to step in. He offered to sponsor the “Baby Peanut” program, which introduced children aged 3 and 4 to the game. Thanks to his sponsorship, more than 100 children play for free each spring for eight weeks. They spend an hour every Saturday learning the game and every player is given a lightweight stick and a shirt. “They are taught to catch, throw, pass and shoot,” he said. “You get them running around. Get them away from the screen. It is our national game, so you get them exposed. And sure enough, they caught on.” To fund the program, Mr. Suboch came up with a novel idea. He started searching his neighbourhood for used appliances, metal and electronic items, such as computers and cellphones. He sorted the material and sold it to a local recycling centre. “Word has gotten out, so people now will give me their used electronics and metal stuff,” he said. The recycling effort raises around $20,000 annually, which covers the cost of the lacrosse program. Mr. Suboch said watching the kids play has given him a lot of satisfaction and joy. Not only is far less junk going to landfill sites, he said, but “we’ve also got kids who are not in front of a screen.” 24. Why did Andrew start sponsoring the “Baby Peanut” program? A. His son asked him to support the game. B. The kids’ league faced a drop in participation. C. He wanted to promote his own law firm. D. He hoped to popularize a hockey organization. 25. How did Andrew obtain funds for the lacrosse program? A. By organizing charity matches. B. By collecting and selling used items. C. By charging participation fees. D. By raising money from the community. 27. What can we learn about the program’s impact? A. It reduced screen time for children. B. It increased waste sent to landfills. C. It made lacrosse popular worldwide. D. It created jobs for the local residents. C Carol Dweck, a psychologist at Stanford, conducted a study in twelve different New York City schools. She gave more than 400 fifth graders a relatively easy test consisting of puzzles. After the test, the researcher told the students their score, and provided them with a single line of praise. Half of the kids were praised for their intelligence. “You must be smart at this,” the researcher said. The other students were praised for their effort, “You must have worked really hard.” When Dweck was designing the experiment, she expected the different forms of praise to have a rather modest effect. After all, it was just one sentence. But it soon became clear that the type of compliment given to the fifth graders has a dramatic effect. Then Dweck gave the same fifth graders another test that was designed to be extremely difficult. Both groups made unavoidable mistakes. After the second test, the students were given the option of looking either at the exams of kids who did worse or those who did better. Students praised for their intelligence almost always chose to increase their self-esteem (自尊) by comparing themselves with lower-performance students. In contrast, kids praised for their hard work were more interested in the higher-scoring exams. They wanted to understand their mistakes, to learn from their errors, to figure out how to do better. Praising kids for their intelligence encourages them to “look” smart, which means that they shouldn’t risk making a mistake. And this fear of failure can actually prevent learning. Unless we experience the unpleasant symptoms of being wrong, directing our attention to the very thing we’d like to ignore, the mind will never revise its models. We’ll keep on making the same mistakes, trading self-improvement for self-esteem. Samuel Beckett had the right attitude: “Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better.” 28. What is the focus of Dweck’s study? A. The development of students’ self-esteem. B. The difference in students’ intelligence. C. The effects of different types of praise. D. The students’ performance in puzzle tests. 29. What does the underlined word “compliment” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. puzzles. B. praise. C. tests. D. research. 30. Why do students praised for intelligence compare themselves with those who did worse? A. To improve their self-respect. B. To figure out how to do better. C. To understand their own mistakes. D. To push themselves to work harder. 31. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. Being smart is disadvantageous. B. Learning from mistakes is necessary. C. Trying only leads to more failures. D. Making the same mistakes is unavoidable. D When it comes to animals that use their noses to smell out crime, most people probably think of police dogs. However, research by an organization called APOPO suggests African giant pouched rats (巨颊囊鼠) could be the next crime-fighting heroes on four legs. APOPO has already trained the rats to find hidden bombs on the ground, detect illness in humans and locate people buried by earthquakes. Now, it also has taught them to use their powerful noses to tackle the illegal wildlife trade. The illegal wildlife trade is the transport of wildlife across countries’ borders to sell them. Criminals disguise an item in lots of ways, including painting it so it looks like wood or cutting it into pieces and coating it in chocolate so it looks like a sweet. These tricky acts make it hard for humans to detect illegal goods. However, African giant pouched rats can do them a favor. They are particularly well suited to spotting the hidden goods, with a highly developed sense of smell that can tell the difference between lots of scents (气味), and a small body that can fit into tight areas in piles of boxes humans couldn’t reach to search properly. And the rats are cheap to train to bring good results. The rats were taught to associate (联系) a clicking sound with a food reward, and then they were put in a container with holes in the bottom, with scent samples (样本) below. The researchers wanted the rats to identify certain scents while ignoring others. A rat could point out a certain smell to the researchers by keeping its nose in a hole for three seconds. When the rats chose the right scent, they heard the click sound and were rewarded with food, so they learned which smells to identify (确定) over time. Researchers later tested the rats at a port in Tanzania where they hid items they hoped the rats would find. Each rat wore a tiny cloth with a little ball attached, and when they found something, they pulled on the ball, causing a sound. The rats found more than 83% of the hidden items. Thus, APOPO is now working on sending its “HeroRATS” out to detect real crime. 32. What does the underlined word “disguise” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Pass on. B. Trade in. C. Look over. D. Cover up. 33. Why are the rats considered potential helpers to humans? A. They have a gift for telling the difference. B. They are well-nosed and cost-effective. C. They have fast-adapting and learning abilities. D. They are highly qualified for medical care. 34. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about? A. The food reward system. B. The sound sample collection. C. Smell association research. D. Scent identification training. 35. Why is the field testing introduced in the last paragraph? A. To evidence the rats’ uniqueness. B. To lead in a new way to detect crime. C. To support the future application plan. D. To prove the rats’ sensitivity (敏感) to sound. E King Shahryār, betrayed (背叛) by his wife, decides to marry a new woman each night and have her killed by morning to ensure he is never betrayed again. Scheherazade volunteers to marry the king. Each evening, she begins an engaging story but stops at dawn, leaving him eager for more. Night after night, she keeps him attracted with new tales, and over 1,001 nights, the king falls in love with her and abandons his cruel ways. This ancient tale from One Thousand and One Nights highlights storytelling’s impact. Our recent research shows that strong storytelling skills can dramatically improve someone’s well-being. At its core, storytelling helps people find meaning from life’s chaos. Studies show we shape our identities by turning experiences into personal stories. Skilled storytellers excel at two key skills: They need to connect events logically (合乎逻辑地) and they must learn to see the world through the eyes of their characters, understanding the “why” of what drives people. Applying these two skills to their own lives, skillful storytellers use the first to identify and pursue what gives their life meaning, while the second develops a mindset that prioritizes (优先处理) the “why” behind their actions over just the “how”. To illustrate this point, we conducted studies with 800 participants. We measured storytelling ability through self-reports, friend evaluations and expert reviews on lab experiments where each participant told one story about himself and the other with three given random words. In addition to these assessments of storytelling skills, we asked participants questions to get a sense of how meaningful they found life and whether they approached decisions with a “why” mindset rather than a “how” mindset. Results consistently linked storytelling skills to stronger life meaning and goal clarity (清晰). Personality also mattered: People open to new experiences collected more interesting life stories, while shy people used storytelling to balance out their limited social interaction. A strong “why” mindset connects with reduced stress and extended life. Storytelling also builds social connections. By helping people express their purpose and build relationships, stories may indirectly strengthen both mental and physical health. Storytelling workshops, now popular globally, may do more than teach communication — they could help participants redefine (重新界定) their life’s direction. 36. Why does the author mention Scheherazade’s stories in the first paragraph? A. To show Scheherazade’s cleverness. B. To entertain readers with a classic tale. C. To introduce the topic of storytelling. D. To compare ancient and modern stories. 37. What does the “why” mindset primarily focus on? A. Completing daily tasks efficiently. B. Avoiding stressful situations. C. Memorizing random life events. D. Understanding life purpose. 38. What were participants asked to do in the lab experiment? A. Share personal interests in a group. B. Tell a story with words provided. C. Reflect on the “why” behind their actions. D. Connect events into a meaningful story. 39. Which can be the best title for the text? A. Scheherazade’s Survival in an Ancient Tale B. How People’s Storytelling Abilities Develop C. Living a Meaningful Life through Storytelling D.
