Free talk In our life, we often have dreams. But it’s not always easy to make dreams come true. Sometimes we want to give up. Read the text below and pay attention to the use of before, after, when and while. When I was a child, my dream was to become an Olympic swimmer. One day, while I was training, I hurt my shoulder. I had to get months of treatment. When my shoulder was better, I had to work hard to get back into shape. After I got well, I trained for four years and finally made my dream come true. My coach was proud of me. He was sure about my success before the accident happened. And he never gave up on me even during the most difficult times. Using before, after, when and while Work out the rule! When we use before, after, when or while ______________ (at the start, in the middle) of a sentence, the opening clause is followed by a comma. at the start 当我们使用before, after, when, while等词开头句子时,开头的从句后面要加逗号。 Before he sleeps, he reads books.(句首,加逗号) He reads books before he sleeps.(句中,不用逗号) •before 意思是 “在……之前” , 表示主句的动作发生在从句的动作之前。 结构:主句 + before + 从句(从句动作后发生) 例:Think carefully before you make a decision.(在你做决定之前要仔细思考。) He took a walk after he finished his homework.(他完成作业之后出去散步。) I will call you when I arrive home.(我到家就给你打电话。) When I was reading, the phone rang.(我正在看书的时候,电话响了。) While he was practising, he hurt his knee.(当他正在训练的时候,他伤到了膝盖。) Simon is writing a blog post about his uncle. Complete it below using before, after, when or while. When while Before After Example: I’d like to talk about Su Bingtian, a great Chinese sprinter with a strong will. Before he became a famous runner, he spent lots of time on hard training every day. When he met failures, he never chose to give up. While other players were resting, he kept practising his speed on the playground. After he overcame plenty of difficulties, he made great progress in running. When he stood on the international stage, he showed his great spirit to the whole world. His story tells us that we should stick to our dreams no matter what happens. Think of a person with a strong will. Talk with your partner about this person, using before, after, when and while. Read the text below and pay attention to the use of since and till/until. Since I learnt about the amazing stories of Stephen Hawking, I have often thought of him when I face challenges. I won’t give up till I reach my goal. I am also very interested in Hawking’s books. Many questions about the universe were too difficult for common people to understand until Hawking wrote his books. Using since, till and until Till/Until I achieve my dreams, I won’t leave. Do not give up until you reach your goal! When we use verbs like go, leave, arrive and come in the main clause, we should use the structure not ... till/until. Till is more informal than until. Work out the rule! We can use since, till and until _______________________ (at the start or in the middle, only at the start) of a sentence. at the start or in the middle 我们可以在句首或句中使用 since、till 和 until。 since & till / until since 意思是 “自从……以来”,since 引导的从句用一般过去时;主句常用现在完成时。表示动作或状态从过去某一时间开始,一直持续到现在。 例:Since he was a child, he has kept practising running. He has had this dream since he was twelve years old. I will keep trying until I realize my dream.(我会一直努力,直到我实现我的梦想。) She didn’t go home until she finished her training.(她直到完成训练才回家。) Sandy and Simon are talking about their dreams. Complete their conversation using since or till/until. Simon: Do you have any big dreams, Sandy? Sandy: Sure. I want to become a famous fashion designer. That has been my dream ___________ I was 10 years old. I know it won’t be easy. But I won’t stop trying __________ I succeed. Simon: In that case, I’m sure you’ll reach your goal some day. Sandy: Thanks, Simon. I’ll teach myself about fashion design __________ I get a chance to study it further at university. What about you? Simon: Well, __________ I was very young, my dream has always been to become a good football player. Sandy: I think you can! You’ve been one of the best football players at school __________ you were in Grade 7. It won’t be long __________ a good coach notices you. since till/until till/until since since till/until Talking about your goals Have you set a goal recently? Talk about it with your partner, using since and till/until. Example: A: Have you set a goal recently? B: Sure. I want to become a pianist. That has been my dream since I was seven. I know it won’t be easy. But I won’t stop practising until I can play on the big stage. A: In that case, I’m sure you will reach your goal some day. B: Thanks. I’ll teach myself music knowledge till I get a chance to study it further at university. What about you? A: Well, since I was nine, my dream has always been to become an engineer. B: I think you can! You have built small models since you came to this school. It won’t be long till you finish your first robot. Read the text below and pay attention to the use of as soon as and whenever. Whenever I face a challenge, I think about my role model. His experience gives me hope as soon as it comes to mind. I know if I never give up, I will succeed. Using as soon as and whenever Work out the rule! We can use as soon as and whenever _________________ _________ (at the start or in the middle, only at the start) of a sentence. at the start or in the 我们可以在句子的开头或中间使用 as soon as 和 whenever。 middle as soon as & whenever as soon as “一…… 就……”,表示主句动作紧跟在从句动作之后立刻发生,两个动作先后紧密相连。 •主句将来时,as soon as从句用一般现在时表将来 例:I will call you as soon as I arrive home.(我一到家就给你打电话。) He started training as soon as he finished his homework.(他一写完作业就开始训练。) Whenever he meets difficulties, he never gives up.(每当他遇到困难,他从不放弃。) He kept calm whenever he faced hard problems.(每当他面对难题时,他总是保持冷 静。) Kitty is writing an email to her cousin Linda in the USA.
