For Derek Veal, it all started when he was 12 years old, playing in his grandfather’s barn. While exploring it, Veal discovered an old suitcase. Inside were piles of old photos, some of them over 100 years old.
The suitcase belonged to his great-grandmother. She had Alzheimer’s and lived in a nearby nursing home. Veal and his grandfather visited her shortly afterwards with the photos, hoping she could tell them more about them. What happened next changed Veal’s life.
“Everything came back to her when she saw these pictures. She recognized her sisters, her aunts, her grandparents… It was the first time I had seen someone’s lost memories from an old photo returning to them.” Veal said.
The experience made Veal realize the power of old photographs to hold treasured and long-forgotten memories and restore their identity. It never left him. It was the first thing Veal thought about when he found some old family photos for sale at a thrift store two years ago. “I decided to pick a picture out, study it, and then try to get it back to its original family,” he said. Soon, Veal bought more photos and started a Facebook group called Old Photo Project to aid in finding other photos’ families.
Veal is not the only person to take on the hobby of returning lost photographs. Photo enthusiasts around the world have taken on the task of searching for old photographs with the purpose of reuniting them with their families. What makes this hobby so unique is not only how it gives people the chance to help others, but it also brings these enthusiasts a sense of identity. “The more I return memories,” said a photo enthusiast, “the more it feels like I’m supposed to be doing this.”
24. Why did Veal bring the old photos to his great-grandmother?
A. To show his grandfather’s secret suitcase.
B. To help her identify her lost relatives.
C. To decorate her room in the nursing home.
D. To learn about the stories behind the photos.
25. What did Veal do after finding old family photos in a thrift store?
A. He donated photos to local nursing homes.
B. He set up an online group to help return photos.
C. He opened a physical shop to sell old photos.
D. He kept photos to remember his great-grandmother.
26. What can we learn about global photo enthusiasts?
A. They match lost photos with families.
B. They take care of seniors with Alzheimer’s.
C. They earn a lot by collecting old family photos.
D. They create Facebook groups to collect photos.
27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To advertise Old Photo Project.
B. To explain how to recover memories.
C. To introduce a meaningful hobby.
D. To teach how to find lost family photo.

A comment from Zadie Smith caught my attention this week. Asked whether she had ever considered recording an album, the novelist responded, “I have a dream of having a Café Carlyle residency in New York in my 80s.” Here she is at the height of her success dreaming of a career Plan B just like the rest of us!
Weird Plan Bs fascinate me because for years I had one of my own. Despite being perfectly happy in my chosen profession, I had long harboured the fantasy of becoming a photographer and I took a lockdown leap and applied to art school to acquire some actual skills.
Has it brought me fame and riches? Not as yet. Like many people who dream of having a go at something different, I was focusing on creative satisfaction rather than my future finances. By the time I graduated in 2022, my dream of running a portrait photography business was looking a lot less practicable — in part thanks to AI head-shot generators.
If only I had had a little more Fobo, also known as the fear of becoming out-of-date. This workplace trend is an updated version of Fomo — the fear of missing out, which now feels like a poignant (辛酸的) throwback to more optimistic times. 22% of workers are worried that technology will put them out of a job. And who can blame them?
There is another reason that nurturing an alternative career might be risky. Research indicates that having a back-up plan can work against you. Having a Plan B as a safety net can cause people to make less effort at their day job and — unhelpfully — run a greater risk of losing it.
So, do I regret pursuing my Plan B? Not at all — hopefully I’ve got a few years before robot photographers take over the world, and I currently spend a day a week on photography. My only sorrow is something unexpected. For so many years. I had the fantasy of trying something new. My “someday” ambition sustained me through dull and boring days. But now I’m actually spending some of my week doing it, which has caused empty space in my life. It made me realize that having an alternative career to dream about is in itself sustaining and comforting. You might never do it, and that might not even matter. So, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go and start working on my Plan C.
28. Why did Zadie Smith want to have a Cafe Carlyle residency?
A. She was not satisfied with her writing career.
B. She was eager to take up a second career.
C. She was depressed by recording an album.
D. She was unable to reach the height of success.
29. What do you know about the author’s plan B?
A. She was a skilled photographer who graduated from an art school.
B. She gave up her chosen occupation because of lockdown.
C. She gained a sense of creative satisfaction instead of income.
D. She ran a photography business with the assistance of AI.
30. Why did the author mention the concepts of Fobo and Fomo in paragraph 4?
A. To explain why workers are eager to do plan B.
B. To introduce one of the disadvantages to do plan B.
C. To advocate the society’s acceptance of plan B.
D. To display the future of trend of the workforce.
31. What does the underlined phrase “only sorrow” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. She will be replaced by robot photographer in the future.
B. She can’t spare time to do photography professionally.
C. She hates the dull and boring days in doing photography.
D. She lost something new to excite some enthusiasm for life.

When we think about high school’s lasting impact, we often focus on grade point averages, extracurricular activities, and close friendships. But according to a new study, the influence of high school stretches far beyond the teenage years and into our very bodies.
The study tracked a nationally representative sample of individuals who were high school sophomores (二年级的) and seniors in 1980. Researchers followed these participants into their early 50s and found strong links between high school experience and midlife body mass index (BMI). This relationship held even when accounting for college education, academic attainment, and weight during high school itself.
This research argues that high schools are more than institutions of learning — they are health shapers. For decades, we’ve known that educational attainment is linked to health outcomes, including weight. But this study pushes the timeline back, suggesting that the process of becoming educated — especially the early stages that happen in high school — is just as crucial.
So, what parts of high school matter? It turns out that attending private schools, being in high socioeconomic status (High-SES) environments, and enrolling in advanced curricular tracks were associated with lower midlife BMI, especially for women. These factors weren’t just minor contributors; they maintained their influence even after researchers controlled for a host of variables like college degrees and adult income.
Interestingly, popularity during high school also played a role for women. In a society where women and girls face heightened pressure around body image, early social acceptance may help establish healthier long-term habits and body ideals.
The gender differences in this study are striking. For women, both family and school SES, along with popularity, were significantly linked to adult weight. For men, the connection existed but was less pronounced. One possible reason? The cultural landscape. Girls and women often deal with more pressure to be thin and face harsher judgment about their weight than boys and men. These pressures likely strengthen how high school experiences — both academic and social — shape long-term behaviors and self-perceptions.
32. What does the study mainly reveal about high schools?
A. They predict academic success. B. They foster social relationships.
C. They determine career achievements. D. They shape long-term physical health.
33. Which factor relates to lower adult BMI for women?
A. Adult family status. B. High school popularity.
C. College degree level. D. High school sports activities.
34. Why do gender differences exist in findings?
A. Social expectations. B. Economic policies.
C. Educational resources. D. Biological distinctions.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Gender Differences in Educational Environments
B. The Link Between School Grades and Adult Success
C. High School’s Long-Term Impact on Physical Health
D. The Role of Social Activities in adolescent Development

Tips for Choosing a Career
Choosing a career for the rest of your working life isn’t always easy. 36 Here are some tips to help you decide.
37
There are always people who want you to become a lawyer, work in banking, or be a teacher. Listen to them, but remember it’s your life and it’s your decision. So be sure that you’re the one who makes that decision!
Consider what you think you’re good at.
It’s true that things like salary are important. However, don’t let financial considerations lead you down the wrong path. 38 If you’re not very outgoing, don’t go for a sales job, even if the pay’s good. In the same way, if you don’t like work that involves paying lots of attention to detail, think long and hard before you decide to do something like applying to study engineering at university.
Your first decision isn’t forever.
39 They choose a job, find they love it and stick with it. But it isn’t always like that, so remember — you’re allowed to change your mind! Certainly, it’s no good struggling for years; maybe you’ve got three or four possible things you’d like to do, so come to a decision and try one — and if you don’t like it, try another one.
Do something of value.
Some people choose their career simply because they think they’ll earn huge amounts of money. OK, if that’s what you want. But generally, true satisfaction in a job comes from doing something of value, like making a positive impact, fueling personal growth, or following the passion. 40
A. Follow your heart and your personality.
B. Some lucky people get it right first time.
C. Don’t let other people tell you what to do.
D. Not everyone can choose the dream career.
E. But it doesn’t have to be as painful as some people think.
F. The value of jobs lies in transforming your ability into money.
G. Job satisfaction isn’t merely measured by the size of your paycheck.
