第二节读后续写
After a moment's thought,however;Keino made a decision.He quickly paid the bill,flung open the door,
and leapt out of the taxi.Forcing his legs into motion,he sprinted down the road, praying he could still make
it in time.He wove through lines of cars, slipped past crowds on the sidewalks, and dashed by blocks of
buildings that blurred into streaks of color.Yet the farther he ran,the calmer he felt and his mind held only one
thought:Reach the stadium. At last, the stadium came into view.Keino glanced at his watch-four minutes
left!Gathering every ounce of strength,he launched into a final burst of speed, hardly noticing that the
stomach pain gripping him earlier had vanished without a trace.
When Keino hurriedly ran into the stadium, the other players were ready for the race.Breathless,he
hurried to his lane, feeling dozens of eyes on him.The spectators whispered anxiously, unsure whether he had
the strength to finish the 1,500 meters. To their astonishment, the moment the whistle blew,Keino sprang
forward as powerfully as anyone else.Slightly exhausted, even he was surprised by the instinct that took over.
Perhaps that ten-minute,two-kilometer sprint had been the perfect warm-up after all.Keino crossed the finish
line first.Never had he imagined that such chaos would strike on such an important day.Yet it reminded him
of a truth he would never forget:with determination and courage, obstacles often become the very place
where one's greatest potential awakens.

第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分42.5分)
第一节(共12小题;每小题2.5分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Last week I met with a friend from high school. She mentioned how her parents had been checking up on her constantly with Life360, a location-sharing app used for parental monitoring, demanding photo evidence of where she was and who she was with. She felt overwhelmed as a 19-year-old college student. As much as I felt sorry for her, I was actually short on advice.
As one of five kids in a big family, I, along with my brothers and sisters, was given plenty of space to be myself. We were allowed to explore and find adventure. We ran through the woods and created our own imaginary worlds. If we got hurt, one of us would find help, and our parents were always there.
I knew what it was like to make mistakes and learn from them. Once my cousins and I painted the floor of a big lodge at our summer camp red to scare the other kids. Our parents found out soon after and made us fix up the whole room. I learned then that our choices, which came with freedom, held consequences. Finally, I grew up exposed to the outside world and learned various principles of life.
As I got older, adventures began to turn into “I’m going to take a trip with my friend Emily this weekend.” My parents trusted me, and I felt the incredible joy and responsibility that accompanied that. Before I left the house, my mom always said, “Remember who you are.” And because of the independence I was given, I did.
Growing up, I’ve observed that most of my friends with overprotective parents are more vulnerable than those without. Children are only able to grow when they’re allowed to. Now, as a college student, I am more than thankful for the freedom and trust my family has given me.
21. What troubled the author’s friend?
A. Messed-up personal life. B. Tight parental control.
C. The busy college schedules. D. The heavy family atmosphere.
22. What do the author’s parents think is key to raising children?
A. Allowing children time in nature. B. Being emotionally available.
C. Providing help when needed. D. Attaching importance to safety.
23. What did the author’s mother mean by “Remember who you are”?
A. Do not lose your identity. B. Stay connected with your families.
C. Never forget your past experiences. D. Be mindful of your character and values.
24. What lesson does the author intend to tell?
A. Rome wasn’t built in a day. B. Every coin has two sides.
C. Trust clears way for growth. D. East or west, home is best.
B
Chimpanzees (大猩猩) share many characteristics with us, such as the use of tools and social structures. However, a new report by researchers from the University of Exeter reveals another surprising parallel.
In Guinea-Bissau’s Cantanhez National Park, the researchers have managed to film wild chimpanzees eating and sharing the naturally fermented (已发酵的) African breadfruit containing alcohol on 10 different occasions. Cameras caught chimpanzees gathering around African breadfruit trees, happily eating the fruit and passing it around.
Later tests revealed that the fruit contained alcohol — the same thing found in beer and wine — with levels reaching up to 0.61% ABV (alcohol by volume). The footage also revealed that 90% of the shared, more valuable fruit was more fermented than the less-desired 10% that was simply ripe. This suggests that the chimpanzees may have a preference for the fruit with alcohol.
Interestingly, they seemed to enjoy sharing the experience with others in their group rather than keeping the best fruit to themselves. In several cases, there was enough fruit around for the chimpanzees to each choose and eat their own, but instead they shared. The research team doesn’t know exactly why the chimpanzees are doing any of this, and whether they experience any noticeable effects after eating the fermented fruit, though they probably don’t end up as red-faced as some humans do. But since chimpanzees are similar in many ways to humans, it very well could be that this is as much about socializing as it is about the fermented food.
This interesting discovery not only sheds light on chimpanzee behavior but, given our close evolutionary ties, also offers valuable insights into the ancient traditions of humans. “Social eating and alcohol consumption make up two key parts of party behavior in humans,” say the researchers. “But does our party behavior come from a shared origin? The data provide the first evidence for fermented food sharing and feeding by wild chimpanzees, and support the idea that the use of alcohol by humans is not recent but rather has existed throughout our evolutionary history.”
25. What does the underlined word “parallel” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Possibility. B. Similarity. C. Connection. D. Addition.
26. What is the primary finding from the cameras in the Cantanhez National Park?
A. Chimpanzees share and consume alcohol-containing fruits.
B. Chimpanzees can tell the difference between different fruits.
C. Chimpanzees are able to harvest fermented fruits with tools.
D. Chimpanzees have a preference for eating and living together.
27. Why might chimpanzees share fermented fruits?
A. They want to soften the alcohol’s impact.
B. This is their imitation of human behavior.
C. They regard it as a way of social bonding.
D. The fermented fruit may be rare for them.
28. What does the discovery of chimpanzees suggest about human behavior?
A. Humans have a tradition of sharing alcohol with others.
B. Human use of alcohol may have deep evolutionary roots.
C. Social eating behavior is entirely unique to human beings.
D. Party behavior may be very important to human evolution.
C
A free online platform that allows speakers to practice in front of thousands of virtual audience has been launched to help those who feel anxious when presenting to an audience. Dr Chris Macdonald, the founder of the online platform, said, “Most people have some form of speech anxiety, but very few people are seeking help. So what I was trying to do with this project was to fix this problem. The platform — which includes learning materials, feedback tools and virtual scenes such as job interviews — can be accessed through a laptop or a VR headset or via a smartphone.”
The Virtual Reality Public Speaking platform employs exposure therapy — the idea that facing fears can help reduce them — combined with breathing exercises and eye movements that help slow the heart rate and reduce the fear response. People using the technology can practise speaking in various virtual reality (VR) settings, from an empty classroom to a hall of 10,000 audience, with the option to add distractions, such as flashing cameras and loud noises. Macdonald said the latter was an example of “overexposure therapy”.
A recent study published by Macdonald in the journal Frontiers in Virtual Reality suggests the platform could be beneficial. The research involved 29 teenagers from China, who each undertook 30 minutes of training in which they alternated between using the VR system and practising a simple breathing exercise, after which they delivered a prepared one-minute speech in English to 34 people in real life. The percentage of anxious speakers dropped from 65% to 20%, while confident speakers rose from 31% to 79%. More students said they enjoyed public speaking after using the platform.
But Dr Matteo Cella, a psychologist who was not involved in the work, said there was a potential risk — overexposure could strengthen people’s avoidance of public speaking. “There is a lot of enthusiasm and problem-solving energy from digital innovators to address important mental health challenges in our society, but unfortunately, many products have poor use and short lives due to their very rapid development and limited support,” he said.
29. What does “overexposure therapy” refer to in the context of the platform?
A. Avoiding public speaking to reduce stress. B. Using only breathing exercises without VR.
C. Practising in extremely challenging virtual settings. D. Repeating the same speech multiple times.
30. What did Dr Macdonald’s study reveal about the platform?
A. It worked better for adults than teenagers.
B. It required daily practice to show obvious effects.
C. It removed speech anxiety completely in teenagers.
D. It helped users increase confidence and reduce anxiety.
31. What is Dr Matteo Cella’s attitude towards the platform?
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Concerned. D. Indifferent.
32. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Online VR Tool Helps People Overcome Speech Nerves
B. Overexposure Therapy Increases the Fear of Public Speaking
C. VR Platform Offers New Ways to Learn Speech
D. Breathing Exercises Can Cure Speech Anxiety

Sustaining Motivation in Academic Life
Motivation drives goal achievement, but senior high students often struggle to maintain it under heavy academic pressure. Many often fall into the trap of setting unrealistic goals. 33 Fortunately, there are useful strategies to help you stay motivated and navigate through challenges effectively.
Start by setting SMART objectives. 34 Transforming them into Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound (现实的) goals provides a structured path forward. For example, a short-term goal could be improving math scores by 15% in two months through daily practice. Such clarity breaks down overwhelming ambitions into actionable steps.
35 Optimism can be passed on to others, while negative environments take away your motivation. Surround yourself with peers who attach great importance to academic growth — studies show students in motivated groups can stick to tasks 30% longer. Their consistent encouragement helps you stay committed during challenging hardships.
A further critical strategy lies in redefining failure as learning. Instead of viewing mistakes as setbacks, see them as growth opportunities. When scoring poorly on a test, analyze errors rather than blame yourself. For example, if your composition has weak points, you will know what to correct. 36
Finally, take advantage of internal motivation. External pressures like parental expectations fade, but inner passion lasts. Reflect on whether your goals originate from genuine interest or merely mirror others’ expectations. 37 Take careful notice when there is a misfit, for goals rooted in personal values, such as pursuing biology to advance medical research, foster unwavering (坚定不移的) commitment.
A. This helps reveal if they match your values for timely adjustments.
B. Each essay revision moves you closer to perfection.
C. Such objectives will give rise to long-term frustration.
D. Forming study groups can help share learning resources.
E. Setting overly simple goals can make you lose interest quickly.
F. Loose goals like “getting into a good university” lack clear explanation.
G. Equally significant is constructing a mutually supportive network.

On the morning of his 1,500-meter race at the 1968 Games, the determined runner Kip Keino of Kenya found himself in a rather awful situation. He was seated in the backseat of a somewhat shabby taxi, making his way to the Olympic Stadium in the bustling city of Mexico City.
He was understandably worried. The city was in the grip of a massive traffic congestion. Everywhere he looked, there were traffic jams stretching as far as the eye could see. The honking of horns filled the air, creating a chaotic symphony. His taxi, a small vehicle amidst the sea of larger cars, buses, and other taxis, was barely inching forward.
Keino, with a furrowed brow, kept looking ahead at the long line of cars, buses, and taxis in front of him. The vehicles were bumper-to-bumper, and the drivers seemed frustrated, some impatiently drumming their fingers on the steering wheels.
It was an hour before his race, and he took a deep breath, trying to calm his nerves. As time ticked away, it became fifty minutes, and he could feel a sense of unease creeping up on him. The taxi moved a few more meters, but the progress was extremely slow. Forty minutes passed, and he started to tap his foot nervously on the floor of the taxi. The traffic showed no signs of letting up. Then, it was twenty minutes before the race. Keino’s heart began to pound a bit faster. He could see people on the sidewalks, some of them wearing Olympic-themed clothing, walking towards the stadium with excited expressions. Meanwhile, he was still stuck in the traffic.
Finally, it was only ten minutes before the start of the race. And to his disappointment, the taxi was still a full 2 kilometers from the stadium. Considering the current traffic situation, the distance seemed almost impossible to cover. What’s worse, earlier that morning, even before getting into the taxi, he had been worried that the pain in his stomach might affect his performance.
