I have never been very good at learning languages. But next year, I am going to work in the Congo (刚果). I want to learn enough Lingala, one of the local languages, to have simple conversations with people there. 35 , I am worried because I am busy and don’t have much free time to take classes. So I have found a language-learning app called Memrise, which fits easily into my daily life.
To be honest, when I got a 36 moment at home, I used to check messages or watch short videos on the phone. Now, I use those few minutes to learn new words instead. With Memrise, learning feels light and fun, not stressful. Each section only takes five or ten minutes, so it is easy to keep going every day.
Memrise is fun. It gives me new words to learn. These are “ 37 ” in my “greenhouse”. When I practise, I “water my plants” and they grow. 38 the app believes I have remembered-a-word, it moves the word to my “garden”. I get points as my garden grows. Then I can compare 39 with other users. If I 40 to log on (登录), the app sends messages or emails to me.
The app uses two learning ideas. First, we remember words better by 41 them with pictures. For example, when I want to memorize “motele”, the Lingala word for “engine”, the picture can remind me 42 the word. The other idea is that Memrise helps us review what we’ve learned before learning something new. We only spend several minutes on it a day.
So far, I have learned hundreds of Lingala words, but it can’t make me feel 43 . I will continue to learn because I want to do more than just greet people when I meet them in the Congo. I may come across many difficulties, but I’ll tell myself: just take things step by step, start simple and 44 . Now, I need to go and water my vocabulary!

Autumn brings beautiful scenery with leaves turning red, yellow, and orange. Every time we walk through parks or forests, these colorful leaves paint the world with warmth and fascination. Have you ever wondered why this happens? It’s all about science and nature’s magic.
Leaves are like small “food factories” for trees. During spring and summer, they make food using sunlight, water, and chlorophyll (叶绿素). It gives leaves their bright green color and works hard to keep trees growing. This food-making process is very important for trees to live. Chlorophyll needs plenty of sunlight to work well, so leaves stay green when days are long and warm.
With the arrival of autumn, days get shorter and the temperature drops. Trees slow down their food-making process to save energy for winter. The chlorophyll breaks down and disappears gradually, bringing out other colors that were hidden before. Yellow and orange come from natural coloring matters called carotenoids (类胡萝卜素), which are always in leaves but masked by green. Red and purple are made when trees produce anthocyanins (花青素) to protect leaves from the cold. The amount of sunlight and rain in late autumn also influences how bright these colors are — more sunny days often lead to richer red.
Finally, the trees shed their leaves because they stop sending water and food to them. This natural process helps trees live through the cold winter. The fallen leaves then turn into food for the soil, helping trees grow new leaves next spring.
Autumn leaf colors are not just pretty — they are nature’s smart way of preparing for the changing seasons. It’s a wonderful example of how plants get used to the world around them.

He arrived with a wooden box. There was a cut across his face. He sang as he walked up to the inn (小酒馆) door.
Our inn was on the cliffs above Black Hill Cove, and was a wild, lonely place, but the old sailor (水手) seemed to like it. He ordered a glass of rum (朗姆酒).
“Do many people come here?” he asked nervously.
“No,” my father said.
“Then this is the place for me,” said the sailor. “You may call me Captain.” He put some gold coins on the table.
He was a quiet man. He walked by the water by day and drank at night. When drunk, he told dark stories that scared guests away.
Each day he told me worriedly to watch for a one-legged sailor, and promised to give me a silver coin if I let him know.
One afternoon Dr. Livesey came. I saw the difference between the white-haired doctor and that dirty, red-faced captain.
The captain began to sing. Dr. Livesey did not like it and talked to old Taylor, the gardener. The captain hit the table for quiet, but the doctor kept speaking.
The captain used a bad word, then said, “Quiet!”
“Are you speaking to me, sir?” asked the doctor.
“Yes,” said the captain.
“I have one thing to say,” replied the doctor. “ ▲ if you keep drinking,”
The captain jumped up with a knife, but the doctor did not move. He spoke in a calm, clear voice so all could hear:
“If you do not put that knife down, I promise you will die as a bad man under the law.”
Then came a long look between them. But the captain put away his knife and sat like a dog that had lost a game. Soon Dr. Livesey left on his horse. The captain said nothing for many evenings after.

On July 10, China made history. For the first time, China caught the Long March 10B rocket after it flew into space. A ship at sea used a big net to catch it, marking the world’s first net-based rocket recovery (回收).
The rocket was launched (发射) from Hainan. After its two stages separated, the second stage went on to send a satellite into space, while the first stage returned to a ship in the ocean. Most rockets come down on four legs. But the new rocket used four “hooks” to catch the net made of strong cables (缆绳).
The new way needs no heavy legs. So the rocket can be lighter and carry more. The new rocket system also allows for more landing mistakes. For example, a US company uses two long arms from a tower to catch rockets. That leaves less room for mistakes than the wide net. Besides, the strong cables also protect the rocket and help reuse.
But the new way is also a big challenge. A very tall rocket comes down from high and must meet a ship moving with the waves. “It is like dropping a pen from the top of a 100-floor building and having it go perfectly into a penholder on the ground,” said Hao Jinjie, one of the project scientists.
This gives the Linghangzhe, China’s first rocket-catching ship, much work to do. It uses a system that can be controlled from far away. It is strong enough to move even with 67-meter-tall, 3500-ton net structures, and 1900-ton machines.
With this new way, the reusability of rockets is expected to grow greatly. “We could see costs go down by 20 to 30 percent. With more work, the number could reach 50 or 60 percent,” Hao told CCTV. This is key because these rockets are expected to send Chinese people to the moon by 2030.
56. Which line shows the correct way of Long March 10B’s recovery?
A. A B. B C. C D. D
57. Why does the writer mention a US company’s method of landing?
A. To show China’s method is able to accept more mistakes.
B. To explain why China uses lighter legs and longer arms.
C. To tell the US company is facing technology difficulties.
D. To suggest China should learn from the US landing method.
58. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Linghangzhe is strong enough to move with heavy tools.
B. The rocket waste will reach 50 to 60 percent in the future.
C. Catching a landing rocket is as easy as getting a pen into a penholder.
D. China’s rocket catching is a proud success to help future space goals.
59. How does the writer organize the passage from Paragraph 1 to 6?
A. Event → Reason → Benefits → Danger → Support → Result
B. Event → Method → Benefits → Challenge → Support → Result
C. Event → Benefits → Method → Challenge → Support → Meaning
D. Event → Method → Benefits → Challenge → Support → Meaning

In Manchester Art Museum, there is a special quiet room. No noisy crowds, no bright lights and no visitors gathering in front of the paintings. Three paintings are hung at a proper height, so visitors can look at them directly when they sit down on the soft sofa.
The room is an experiment called “slow looking”. Usually, we walk around quickly, trying to see everything, but we do not really see anything. A recent study has shown that normally each visitor spends less than 30 seconds looking at a painting. If they take a photo of it, they look for even less time.
Louise Thompson is the art museum consultant (顾问) who had the idea for this “mindfulness (正念) room”. She says that when people come in, they look nervous and do not want to talk to others. However, after ten or fifteen minutes, their bodies relax and they start talking to the person next to them.
Thompson was inspired by Professor James. The professor believes that slowly enjoying artworks in museums is a meaningful way. He says, “People are always troubled by busy study and work. When they look at art slowly, they can escape (逃离) from daily pressure. Besides, when people calm down to enjoy art, they can think about their own feelings, life conditions and personal needs.”
“Tiring daily life always brings low spirits. The beauty and warmth of art can cheer people up,” the professor added.
The mindfulness room is only a short-term project, but Thompson hopes it will change how the museum treats visitors in the future. If museums are designed well, they can be places of deep rest and quiet thought.

Nan Rendong is widely known as the chief scientist of FAST, the world’s largest radio telescope. It is also called “China Sky Eye”. He is remembered as a scientific pioneer who never gave up.
Nan was born in 1945 in Jilin, China, and in 1963 he entered Tsinghua University. He had dreamed of studying building design, but he ended up in radio engineering instead. At university, he was one of the best science students. He could always solve the most difficult math problems first.
Besides studies, Nan also drew pictures, wrote poems, developed photographs, and played sports. At night he often liked lying on the sports field with his friends to point out stars.
After graduating, Nan worked in a radio factory. There he helped the development of a small radio for China, and once stayed up all night to find one small fault in a machine. “If this problem isn’t solved, I can’t sleep,” he said, and this spirit made him who he was.
In 1994, he had a wonderful idea: to build a huge and powerful radio telescope in the mountains of Guizhou. For over twenty years he led the team and solved many difficult problems, and their hard work provided important information for the world. Unfortunately, Nan fell sick later, but he still pushed the work forward, and even in hospital he kept thinking about the project. In 2016, after 22 years, FAST was finally completed.
In September 2017 Nan passed away. Weeks later FAST discovered its first signal from space. So far it has found over 1000, and scientists use this excellent instrument to explore the universe. In 2018 a small star was named after him, and in 2019 he was given the great honour “People’s Scientist”.
From a top student to a great scientist, Nan Rendong’s educational and working experiences encourage more Chinese students to look up at the night sky and make new discoveries for the good of mankind.
