Dear Aunt Ann,
I am 12 years old. My twin sister is taller than me. She often calls me “shorty”! Many of the girls in my class are taller than the boys. I am shorter than anyone in the class. Can you tell me when boys get as tall as girls? When do you think I will grow?
Dave
Dear Dave,
It is true that from the ages of about 8 to 14 most girls are a little taller than most boys. The graph (图表) can show you the difference in height between boys and girls. Most boys catch up with girls around the age of 14. Then they start getting taller than most girls! I’m sorry I can’t tell you when you will grow.
Everyone is different. Why don’t you tell your sister you don’t like her nickname (绰号) for you? I think you should stop worrying about your height. You should be confident in yourself! Remember all the things you are good at.
Come on! I’m sure you will grow soon.
Aunt Ann

A. 11. B. 12. C. 13. D. 14.
2. Which is NOT true according to the text?
A. Dave is shorter than any other student in his class.

Everyone likes to feel that he or she is special, but many of us grow up believing that we’re not special at all. We want to be better at sports. We want nicer clothes or more money. Like the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, or the Cowardly Lion from The Wizard of Oz, we don’t believe we’re good enough just as we are. In the movie, the Scarecrow wants a brain (大脑), the Tin Man wants a heart, and the Cowardly Lion wants to be brave. In the end, each of them realises that he already has what he needs.
Most parents want us to be the best we can be. They sometimes try to ask us to do better by comparing us with others. They mean well, but the message is that we’re not good enough! We begin to believe it and try our best to become better than someone else. But there are lots of people around. They may not be as smart as we are, but they are better at sports. Or they may not be as good-looking as we are, but they have more money.
Like the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion, we all want to be better people. Parents sometimes forget to tell us that we are special, and that we are good enough just as we are. Maybe no one told them when they were growing up, or maybe they just forgot. Either way, it’s up to us to remind them from time to time that each of us, in our own way, is special.
4. What does the writer want to tell us by using the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion as examples?
A. Success needs a smart brain.
B. People should put the heart into everything.
C. We all want to be better people.
D. Be brave, and never give up.
5. What do parents often do to make us do better?
A. They read us The Wizard of Oz. B. They tell us we are common.
C. They buy lots of things for us. D. They compare us with others.
6. What does the underlined word “it” refer to in Paragraph 2?
A. We are not good enough. B. We are good-looking.
C. Our parents are the best. D. We are special.
【答案】4. C 5. D 6. A

In April 2026, humanoid robots took part in a half-marathon in Beijing. They finished the whole race like real humans and surprised lots of people.
These humanoid robots are made in China. They can walk, jump and even run at a high speed. Before the race, scientists spent months improving their balance. It is not easy for robots to keep steady when running. Even small stones on the road may make them fall down. During the marathon, the robots ran slowly but steadily. They could stop when meeting people and restart running again. Some robots finished the 21-kilometre race. This event shows great progress of China’s AI and robot industry.
However, the robots still have limits. They cannot run as fast as human runners. And they need to stop to “rest” now and then. Experts say future robots will do more difficult work in factories, hospitals and homes. They will help people with hard or dangerous jobs.
The half-marathon is not only a sports game for robots. It is a symbol of China’s innovation in AI technology. More teenagers become interested in science after watching the robot race.

Dave
Dear Dave,

Most boys catch up with girls around the age of 14. Then they start getting taller than most girls! I’m sorry I can’t tell you when you will grow.
Everyone is different. Why don’t you tell your sister you don’t like her nickname (绰号) for you? I think you should stop worrying about your height. You should be confident in yourself! Remember all the things you are good at.
Come on! I’m sure you will grow soon.

C
【生词注释:humanoid robot人形机器人; balance n.平衡; steady adj.稳定的; innovation n.创新】
7. What could the robots do during the marathon?
A. They could run faster than human runners.
B. They were able to take a break and continue running.
C. All of them finished the 21-kilometre race.
D. They never needed to take a break in the race.
8. What was the big difficulty for robots in the race?
A. Running fast enough. B. Keeping balance while running.
C. Talking with people. D. Remembering the race road.
9. What does the underlined word “limits” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Rules B. Dreams C. Abilities D. Weaknesses
10. What is the best title of the passage?
A. A robot marathon show and its value. B. Difficulties robots meet in a marathon.
C. Lessons robots learn from a marathon. D. Rules for robots in a marathon.
