Unit 6 Wisdom counts
Class __________ Name __________ Date __________
Someone says, “We found the remains of an ancient city, so every detail in the story about it must be true.” Do you agree? YES / NO / NOT SURE
What could the remains show? What might they not show?
________________________________________________________________________________
Read Exploring history: piecing the puzzle together on p. 96. Complete the chart in short phrases.
Method
An example in the text
What can it help us learn?
Study objects from the past

How people ____________________.
Study written sources

What people ____________________.
Use carbon-dating

The ____________________ of a material.
Use DNA evidence

Information about ____________________.
Key question: Why should historians compare different documents instead of trusting just one?
________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________
Who made it? When was it made? What can it show? What can it NOT show?
A source can be useful without being complete.
Museum claim to check: “In Year 20, a boy named Lin rang the town bell at night and saved EVERY family before a flood.”
Source A A story written in Year 120
A local storyteller wrote that Lin, a brave boy, rang the bell and saved every family in Year 20. The writer was not alive during the flood and did not name any sources.
Source B A resident’s diary from Year 20
“Last night, I heard the bell. I took my children across the bridge before the water rose. I could not see who rang it. Some families were still leaving when we crossed.”
Source C A town repair record from Year 21
“After last year’s flood, workers repaired the bridge and the bell tower.” The record lists materials and costs, but it does not name the bell-ringer or count the families who escaped.
Source D A wooden support from the bell tower
A laboratory report gives the wood an estimated age range consistent with Years 5–30. It does not show who used the bell or when the support was put into the tower.
1. Which source is an eyewitness account(亲历者记录)? ______
2. Which source was produced 100 years after the claimed event? ______
3. Which source uses scientific testing? ______
4. Which TWO sources best support that a flood occurred around Year 20? ______ and ______. Give one detail from each.
________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________
5. Does an old piece of wood prove that Lin rang the bell? Explain one missing link in the evidence.
________________________________________________________________________________
Use the sources to judge each statement: S = supported; U = not yet established(尚未证实). “Not proved” does not automatically mean “false”.
Statement
S or U
Source and reason
1. A flood occurred around Year 20.
_____
___________________________
2. The diary writer heard a bell at night.
_____
___________________________
3. The bell-ringer was certainly Lin.
_____
___________________________
4. Every family escaped because of the bell.
_____
___________________________
A classmate says, “Source C is official, so it can prove everything.” Write a reply with one strength and one limit of this source.
________________________________________________________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________
Write 45–60 words for the museum. Include one supported conclusion, TWO named sources, and one point that is still uncertain.
支架 Source … describes …, and Source … records … . Together, they suggest … . However, we still do not know … .

One extra source I would look for: __________________________________________________
It could help answer: ______________________________________________________________
二 实物例子:tools / coins / clothes / artefacts;帮助了解how people lived。文字例子:official documents / diaries / letters / notebooks / photos;帮助了解what people did, said and thought。
碳测年:paper / wood;age。DNA:DNA from relatives / the Richard III example;family relationships / family trees。
Old documents do not always give correct or complete information. Comparing sources helps historians check what really happened.
4. B and C。
5. No. The wood’s age does not identify the bell-ringer or tell us when it was installed.
Source C records repairs after a flood. However, it does not name the bell-ringer or count the families who escaped. It cannot prove the whole story.
Source B describes a family leaving after a bell rang, and Source C records repairs after a flood. Together, they support a flood around Year 20. However, we still do not know who rang the bell or whether every family escaped. Lin’s story needs more evidence.
1:A second diary from someone near the bell tower. It might help identify the bell-ringer.
2:Records of families before and after the flood. They might help check how many families survived or moved away.
示例3:A dated record of the bell tower’s construction. It could help connect the old wooden support with the tower.
追问:“What evidence would make you change your mind?”
