Few people would have guessed that William loved to write poetry in his spare time. William’s passion (热爱) for this hobby began when, one day in a bookshop, he came across a small book of poems that had mistakenly been put in the law section. Reading it, William admired how the author had expressed so much with just a few carefully selected words and then wondered if he himself could develop a similar talent. From childhood, William had always thrown himself into things. So, he soon read the major works of all the great British poets and became familiar with many of Europe’s most famous poets, too. He had a particular admiration for Shakespeare and the German poet Goethe, but his favourite poet was the Irishman William Butler Yeats — the man that he had been named after, his mother proudly reminded him. So, almost from the day that he was first inspired, William had begun writing poems of his own. He did not know if he had any real talent, but he did know that the words flowed both easily and quickly from his pen. He enjoyed putting words together in a way that suggested different meanings — partly because this was exactly the opposite of what he was required to do as a lawyer. He had no name for the collection of poems that he had written and collected over the years. He simply referred to them all as “The Book”. The name, of course, clearly revealed his subconscious (潜意识的) desire that his poems would one day be published. But he had neither the confidence in his own abilities to approach a publisher, nor the desire to read a bad review if the critics did not like his work. William’s wife would often remind him, in that gentle way of hers, that he was old enough now not to care what others thought of him or to avoid doing something simply because he thought he might fail. 4. Why did William appreciate the poetry in the bookshop? A. He himself had written poetry too. B. He liked how the words were used. C. It reminded him of a forgotten hobby. D. It gave him a break from studying law. 5. Which of the following can best describe William? A. Easy-going. B. Ambitious. C. One who lacks willpower. D. One who goes all out. 6. Why did William call his collection of poems “The Book”? A. He hadn’t yet found a good name for it. B. He was advised to do so by a publisher. C. He secretly wanted them to be published. D. He had already written enough to fill an entire book. 7. What do we know about William’s wife? A. She encouraged him to believe in himself. B. She thought that he did not value her opinion. C. She didn’t think he should try to publish his poems. D. She seemed to be the only one who liked his poetry. B 5. D 6. C 7. 根据第一段“Reading it, William admired how the author had expressed so much with just a few carefully selected words and then wondered if he himself could develop a similar talent.(读着这本诗集,William很欣赏作者只用寥寥几个精心挑选的文字就表达出丰富内涵,然后他想知道自己是否也能拥有这样的才能。)” 根据第二段“From childhood, William had always thrown himself into things. So, he soon read the major works of all the great British poets and became familiar with many of Europe’s most famous poets, too.(从小时候起,William做事情总是全身心投入。于是,他很快读完了所有英国伟大诗人的主要作品,也熟悉了许多欧洲最著名的诗人。)”可知,William是一个做事全力以赴的人。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“He simply referred to them all as ‘The Book’. The name, of course, clearly revealed his subconscious (潜意识的) desire that his poems would one day be published.(他干脆把所有诗作叫做‘这本书’。当然,这个名字清楚地暴露了他潜意识里的愿望:自己的诗作有一天能够出版。)”可知,把诗集命名为“The Book”是因为他内心暗暗渴望诗作可以被出版。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据第五段“William’s wife would often remind him, in that gentle way of hers, that he was old enough now not to care what others thought of him or to avoid doing something simply because he thought he might fail.(William的妻子常常以她温柔的方式提醒他:他现在这个年纪已经足以不用在意别人对他的看法,也不用仅仅因为害怕可能失败就不去做一件事。)” C Electronic books have changed the way many people read for pleasure. Now online textbooks are changing the way some students learn and some teachers teach. More than one hundred and seventy-five thousand students attend the public schools in Fairfax County, Virginia, outside Washington. Last year, the school system used digital books in fifteen schools. This school year, middle schools and high schools changed from printed to electronic textbooks in their social studies classes. Luke Rosa is a history teacher at Falls Church High School. His students work on laptop computers at school. He explains the idea to them this way, “I mean, it’s just like a regular textbook, except it’s got it all online.” Peter Noonan, an assistant superintendent (助理监督) of schools, said, “The world’s changing. And the online textbooks can change right along with the events that are happening.” Digital books also cost less than printed textbooks, he said. A student named Melanie Reuter said, “I don’t have to carry a textbook around, so that’s nice.” But another student said, “I don’t like it because the Internet sometimes doesn’t work.” Students also need access to the Internet when they are not at school. About ten percent of students in Fairfax County do not have a computer or online access at home. Public libraries in the county have free Internet. There are also after-school computer labs as well as computer clubhouses supported by the county. Middle school student Slieman Hakim is happy about that. He said, “My family only has one computer; my sister and I both do our homework on it. So I come here to do my homework. It’s good.” Other school systems in the area are also considering online textbooks. 8. One of the disadvantages of digital textbooks is that ______. A. they’re more expensive B. they can’t be used if the computer is offline C. they’re soon out of date D. reading online does harm to students’ eyes 9. Why does Slieman Hakim feel happy? A. He is offered a free computer to do his homework. B. He doesn’t have to do his homework at home. C. He has access to the Internet to study at any place. D. He needn’t share a computer with his sister to do homework. 10. What can we learn from the passage? A. All students like digital textbooks because they are new. B. Digital textbooks are more beautiful than paper textbooks. C. Students can do their homework in the computer clubhouses. D. The lessons online are completely different from those in paper textbooks. 11. The passage aims to ______. A. report the use of electronic textbooks in school B. show how to use electronic textbooks C. encourage more schools to use electronic textbooks D. tell readers electronic textbooks will replace regular textbooks 【答案】8. B 9. D 10. C 11. 根据第五段“I don’t like it because the Internet sometimes doesn’t work.(我不喜欢它,因为互联网有时不起作用)”可知,数字教科书的缺点之一是,当互联网不起作用时,数字教科书不能使用。 根据倒数第二段“There are also after-school computer labs as well as computer clubhouses supported by the county. Middle school student Slieman Hakim is happy about that. He said, “My family only has one computer; my sister and I both do our homework on it. So I come here to do my homework. It’s good.”(该县还支持课后电脑实验室以及电脑俱乐部。中学生斯利曼·哈基姆对此感到高兴。他说:“我家只有一台电脑;我和妹妹都在电脑上做作业。所以我来这里做作业。这很好。”)”可知,斯利曼·哈基姆不需要和妹妹共用一台电脑做作业,他感到高兴。故选D。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“There are also after-school computer labs as well as computer clubhouses supported by the county. Middle school student Slieman Hakim is happy about that. He said, “My family only has one computer; my sister and I both do our homework on it. So I come here to do my homework. It’s good.”(该县还支持课后电脑实验室以及电脑俱乐部。中学生斯利曼·哈基姆对此感到高兴。他说:“我家只有一台电脑;我和妹妹都在电脑上做作业。所以我来这里做作业。这很好。”)”可知,该县支持电脑俱乐部,学生可以在电脑俱乐部写家庭作业。故选C。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“Now online textbooks are changing the way some students learn and some teachers teach.(现在,网络教科书正在改变一些学生和一些教师的学习方式)”、“Last year, the school system used digital books in fifteen schools. This school year, middle schools and high schools changed from printed to electronic textbooks in their social studies classes.(去年,学校系统在15所学校使用了数字图书。本学年,中学和高中的社会研究课程从印刷版教科书改为电子版教科书)”以及文章内容可知,本文主要介绍了数字教科书在学校的应用情况,以及教师和学生对此的态度,所以本文旨在报告学校使用电子教科书的情况。故选A。 D Whom should you marry? Where should you live? How should you spend your time? For centuries, people have relied on their gut instincts (直觉) to figure out the answers to these life-changing questions. Now, though, there is a better way. We are living through a data explosion, as vast amounts of information about all aspects of human behavior have become more and more accessible. We can use this big data to help determine the best course to chart. There has long been overwhelming—and often surprising—evidence that algorithms (算法) can be much better than people at making difficult decisions. Researchers have collected data on various kinds of choices people make, the information they base those choices on, and how things turn out. They have found, for example, that a simple data-driven algorithm would have been better than judges at deciding whether a defendant should stay in prison or be released; better than doctors at deciding whether a patient should undergo surgery; and better than school principals at deciding which teachers should be promoted. The power of data analysis has been proved in the sports and business worlds, too. As made famous by the book and movie Moneyball, baseball teams found that algorithms were better than scouts (星探) at picking players, and better than managers at picking strategies. In finance, the hedge fund Renaissance Technologies dramatically defeated competitors by seeking out patterns in stock market data and using them to inform its investment strategy. Tech firms in Silicon Valley have found that data from experiments provides better insights into how to design their websites than designers could. These are the early days of the data revolution in decision-making. I am not claiming that we can completely count on algorithms to make our lifestyle choices, though we might get to that point in the future. I am claiming instead that we can all dramatically improve our decision-making by consulting evidence mined from thousands or millions of people who faced dilemmas similar to ours. And we can do that now. 12. What’s the main idea of the passage? A. Big data is a double-edged sword. B. Data revolution will change people’s life. C. Big data is helpful in making important decisions. D. Algorithms behaves better than people in many fields. 13. According to paragraph 2, algorithms might NOT defeat people in_________. A. court rulings B. job promotions C. operative estimation D. teaching practices 14. What is the writing purpose of paragraph 3? A. To provide further evidence. B. To show potential applications. C. To encourage the use of big data. D. To explain how to use algorithms. 15. Which of the following will the author most probably agree with? A. Algorithms offer perfect advice now. B. Big data will certainly cause a revolution. C. Big data can make up for our lack of experience. D. Algorithms are bound to be fully trusted in the future. B 13. D 14. A 15. 根据第一段中“We are living through a data explosion, as vast amounts of information about all aspects of human behavior have become more and more accessible. We can use this big data to help determine the best course to chart.(我们正生活在一个数据爆炸的时代,关于人类行为各个方面的大量信息变得越来越容易获取。我们可以利用这些大数据来帮助确定绘制地图的最佳路线。)”可知,数据革命将改变人们的生活。故选B项。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“They have found, for example, that a simple data-driven algorithm would have been better than judges at deciding whether a defendant should stay in prison or be released; better than doctors at deciding whether a patient should undergo surgery; and better than school principals at deciding which teachers should be promoted.(例如,他们发现,一个简单的数据驱动算法在决定被告是应该留在监狱还是释放时,会比法官更好;在决定病人是否应该接受手术方面优于医生;而且比学校校长更擅长决定哪些老师应该升职。)” 根据第三段“The power of data analysis has been proved in the sports and business worlds, too. As made famous by the book and movie Moneyball, baseball teams found that algorithms were better than scouts(星探) at picking players, and better than managers at picking strategies. In finance, the hedge fund Renaissance Technologies dramatically defeated competitors by seeking out patterns in stock market data and using them to inform its investment strategy. Tech firms in Silicon Valley have found that data from experiments provides better insights into how to design their websites than designers could.(数据分析的力量在体育和商业领域也得到了证明。正如书和电影《点球成金》所述,棒球队发现,算法在挑选球员方面比球探好,在挑选策略方面比经理好。在金融领域,对冲基金文艺复兴科技公司通过从股市数据中寻找规律,并利用这些规律制定投资策略,一举击败了竞争对手。硅谷的科技公司发现,实验数据比设计师更能帮助他们了解如何设计网站。)”可知,算法在体育和商业领域,也可以帮助人们更好地做出决策,此段的写作目的是提供进一步的证据。故选A项。 根据最后一段中“I am claiming instead that we can all dramatically improve our decision-making by consulting evidence mined from thousands or millions of people who faced dilemmas similar to ours. And we can do that now.(相反,我认为我们都可以通过咨询从成千上万与我们面临类似困境的人那里获得的证据来显著改善我们的决策。我们现在就能做到。)”可知,作者应该赞成“大数据可以弥补我们经验的不足。”这一观点。故选C项。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面的短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 If you’re hoping to learn how to become a poet, here are some tips that will set you up for success. Learn to write poetry in a writing class. Whether you’re a beginner or someone who’s been writing for years, a writing class is always one of the best ways to learn to write poetry. Writing classes are especially valuable as they are designed and taught by writers who are currently publishing and have experience in the contemporary (当代的) poetry landscape. There may be shelves of books on the craft (技巧) of writing at the bookstore. ___16___ Writing classes also offer the structure and guidance that most beginning writers — and even writers with a few years of experience benefit from. ___17___ Writing is difficult, but seems much less impossible when you’re not doing it alone. Read. To learn writing techniques from published work, it is important to read critically. ___18___ You should ask questions about what a poem is doing and how it is doing it. Reading is an opportunity to expand your grasp of what poetry is and can be. Generate writing. As you learn how to write poetry, writing often goes hand in hand with reading. Generating writing, however, is often easier said than done. ___19___ Writing is a practice, which means the more you do it, the smoother the process will be. ___20___ The writing journey can sometimes feel lonely, and the path to becoming a poet can also feel directionless. In times like these, I find learning about different poets’ life journeys particularly encouraging. It also shows you that there’s no one way to become a poet. A. Look for models. B. Get curious about the field. C. Writing courses also offer a supportive community. D. It can be especially difficult if you’re just starting out. E. This often means slowing down to seriously consider a poem. F. It’s important for you to learn about existing literary traditions and practices. G. However, nothing beats the personalized tips that a working writer can give you. G 17. C 18. E 19. D 20. 【16题详解】 根据上文“Writing classes are especially valuable as they are designed and taught by writers who are currently publishing and have experience in the contemporary (当代的) poetry landscape. There may be shelves of books on the craft (技巧) of writing at the bookstore.(写作课程尤为宝贵,因为它们由目前正在出版作品、且在当代诗歌领域拥有经验的作家设计和教授。书店里可能满架关于写作技巧的书籍。)”可知,空处应该指出正在出版作品、且在当代诗歌领域拥有经验的作家在写作课上给出的建议比书店的书更为重要。故选项G. However, nothing beats the personalized tips that a working writer can give you.(然而,没有什么比一个职业作家可以为您提供的个性化建议更好的了。) 【17题详解】 根据上文“Writing classes also offer the structure and guidance that most beginning writers — and even writers with a few years of experience benefit from.(写作课程还提供了大多数初学者——甚至是有几年经验的作者都能从中受益的结构与指导。)”和下文“Writing is difficult, but seems much less impossible when you’re not doing it alone.(写作很难,但当你不是独自一人时,似乎就没那么不可能了。)” C. Writing courses also offer a supportive community.(写作课程还提供了一个支持性的社区。)说明了这一点,并与下文中的“when you’re not doing it alone”相呼应。 【18题详解】 根据上文“To learn writing techniques from published work, it is important to read critically.(要从已出版的作品中学习写作技巧,批判性地阅读至关重要。)”和下文“You should ask questions about what a poem is doing and how it is doing it.(你应该问一问这首诗在做什么,以及它是如何做到的。)” E. This often means slowing down to seriously consider a poem.(这通常意味着放慢速度,去认真思考一首诗。) 【19题详解】 根据上文“Generating writing, however, is often easier said than done.(然而,动笔创作往往是说起来容易做起来难。)”和下文“Writing is a practice, which means the more you do it, the smoother the process will be.(写作是一种练习,这意味着你做得越多,过程就会越顺利。)” D. It can be especially difficult if you’re just starting out.(如果您刚刚开始,这可能会特别困难。) 根据下文“In times like these, I find learning about different poets’ life journeys particularly encouraging. It also shows you that there’s no one way to become a poet.(在这样的时刻,我发现了解不同诗人的生命历程特别令人鼓舞。它还向你展示了,成为诗人并没有唯一的方法。)”可知,该段主要建议大家要向不同诗人学习,故选项A. Look for models.(寻找榜样。) Have you seen people who take pictures of food for more than 10 minutes before eating? How about those who beautify their selfies (自拍) so much that they can’t be ___21___? There must be one or more who ___22___ in your social media. No matter ___23___ they choose to share, they share the best but the most unreal. Take my friend Chen as an example. Every time we went to a restaurant, she would not take a ___24___ until all the dishes we ordered were on the table. Then, she would spend five minutes on ___25___ the dishes in a seemingly random but in fact arranged order. Then the most important part: taking pictures. After that, she would choose one of the ___26___ and click in the filter (过滤软件) app. The food eventually looked 10 times more delicious than it really was, but we had no ___27___ to really enjoy it — it all went cold. Actually Chen’s real life is much less elegant. For example, she hates to wash the dishes, so she leaves them in the sink for days. Many people care too much about others’ opinions and try hard to ___28___ others. They find it hard to be ___29___ and to accept themselves, and thus they are afraid to show their real life on social media. What they are trying to prove is ___30___ what they lack in reality. But this will not bring any change to reality, as they still ___31___ the same old pattern of life. If they really want an elegant life, they should put more ___32___ into achieving it ___33___ fabricating (伪造) it. Being more confident, ___34___ themselves and trying their best to be better is much more meaningful than ___35___ their life on social media. 21. A. envied B. admired C. recognized D. defeated 22. The 43. popularity 44. to live 45. ourselves 【解析】 【分析】这是一篇说明文。 when引导时间状语从句,根据句意,从句完整表达为:people are surfing the social media,从句主语和主句主语都是people,且从句谓语含有be动词are,可以省略从句的主语和are,也就是when surfing,故填surfing。 固定搭配the number of“…… Social Media Detox January 22, 2021 By Li Hua With the development of science and technology, there appear an increasing number of social media apps. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Possible version Social Media Detox January 22, 2021 By Li Hua With the development of science and technology, there appear an increasing number of social media apps. The doctors talked about the potential side effects of the drugs that might occur over the next two years of treatment. When our parents told our sister she had cancer, her biggest concern was losing her hair. “Will all my hair really fall out? Will people make fun of me?” she asked, her voice filled with worry. “Don’t worry,” I later told her in secret. “When you lose your hair, I’ll shave mine with a razor (剃刀) and we’ll both be bald (秃头的). We’ ll walk down the street proudly with our bald heads held high. We’ll swim, go to parks and play at the beach with our bald heads.” “Promise?” she asked. “Promise,” I replied, thinking it was a small sacrifice (牺牲) as long as it could cheer her and help her recover. The days and weeks of treatment began to affect her little body. As the doctors had warned, she began to lose her hair. At first, I found some on her clothes and towels. A short time later, I found her hair on the backs of the sofas and chairs she’d been on. Before long, there were masses of hair on her pillow every morning as she awoke from her restless sleep. A few days later, she was finally completely bald. Her head was very smooth and soft as I held her. It reminded me of that wonderful time when I held her in my arms and was amazed at how lucky I was to have such a beautiful and healthy baby sister. Her bald head was beautiful, but it also showed the signs of her battle with cancer. One afternoon at home, I thought it was time to shave my head. However, it was then that I began seriously worrying about something. How ugly would I become when I was bald? Would my parents — who always encouraged us to maintain a certain image — scold (责备) me for having my head shaved? Would people, especially my classmates, make fun of me? I was looking at myself in the mirror when my sister approached. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “It’s beautiful. Please also help shave our heads,” our parents smiled. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】I was looking at myself in the mirror when my sister approached. Her big, innocent eyes searched my face, filled with both curiosity and a hint of admiration. “Are you really going to do it?” she asked softly, her voice breaking the silence. I took a deep breath, feeling a mix of fear and determination. “Yes, I am,” I replied, forcing a smile. “She clapped her hands and squealed, “We’ll be twins!” The first few strokes felt strange, but with each pass of the razor, I felt lighter, as if I were shedding not just my hair, but also my fears and insecurities. “It’s beautiful. Please also help shave our heads,” our parents smiled. Their approval warmed my heart, and I could see the love in their eyes as they watched this moment unfold. As we stood in front of the mirror, I realized that our bald heads symbolized more than just a physical change; they represented our unity and strength in facing her battle against cancer. We were not just a family; we were warriors, ready to take on whatever challenges lay ahead, side by side. 词汇激活 行为类 ①承担:take on/undertake ②意识到:realize/be aware of ③代表:represent/be on behalf of 情绪类 ①害怕:fear/scare ②感觉轻松:feel light/feel relaxed 【点睛】[高分句型1]. B A graduate of London’s best law school, William was regarded by many in his field as one of the best lawyers (律师) in London. C Electronic books have changed the way many people read for pleasure. A. report the use of electronic textbooks in school B. show how to use electronic textbooks C. encourage more schools to use electronic textbooks D. tell readers electronic textbooks will replace regular textbooks D Whom should you marry? G. 注意: (1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 I was looking at myself in the mirror when my sister approached. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “It’s beautiful. Please also help shave our heads,” our parents smiled. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
