Poems from ancient China still speak to modern hearts. These three cards show you how.
Card 1 — Li Bai: The Loneliness of a Traveler
“Abed, I see a silver light, I wonder if it’s frost (霜) around.”
Li Bai wrote these lines while looking out of a window, far away from home. Most Chinese students memorize this poem by age 10, but few truly feel it. A 15-year-old girl from Sichuan told us, “I never cried while reading it until my dad took a job in another city. Now I understand why Li Bai stared at the moon for so long. The moon is the same everywhere, but home is not.”
Card 2 — _______________
“I left home young and not till old do I come back; Unchanged my accent (口音), my hair no longer black.”
He Zhizhang wrote this after returning to his village at the age of 86. The local children saw him and asked, “Sir, where do you come from?” A high school student in Shanghai said, “My grandparents left their village thirty years ago. After reading this poem, I called and asked, ‘Do you still remember the well water there?’ My grandma cried.”
Card 3 — Wang Anshi: The Sight from the Top
“Fear not the floating (浮动的) clouds may block the sight, for we stand atop the highest tier (层),”
Wang Anshi was not only a poet but also a reformer (改革者). In the end, he failed. Though he failed and was sent away, his famous line has stood the test of time (千古流传). A young teacher working in a poor mountain village wrote to us, “My classroom has no door. My students share few books. But every morning, I read them this line. The top is not a place. It is a choice.”
5. What can we learn from “The moon is the same everywhere, but home is not.”?
A. The moon in Sichuan is prettier. B. The girl’s father will not come back.
C. She wants to move to her father’s city. D. Missing home stays even when places change.
6. What heading might have been written on Card 2?
A. Coming Home as a Stranger B. How to Serve the Emperor C. A Poem About Old Hair D. Living in the Village Forever
7. Why did the high school student in Card 2 call her grandparents?
A. She never called her grandparents before.
B. She decided to move back to the village.
C. She wanted her grandparents to write a poem.
D. The poem helped her feel her grandparents’ sadness.
8. What does the young teacher in Card 3 mean by “The top is not a place. It is a choice.”?
A. Only those born into rich families can reach the top.
B. Standing on a mountain gives you a better view of life.
C. A person’s spirit matters more than their difficult situation.
D. Wang Anshi failed because he did not choose the right way.
C
Recently, many people in China have started a movement called “reading rehabilitation”(阅读康复). This means training the brain to read long books again. In the age of short videos and social media, many people find it hard to focus on more than a few sentences. A recent report shows that adults spend over three hours a day on their phones, but only thirty minutes reading real books. This is changing the way we use our minds and how we talk to one another in public.
Experts believe that if we keep scrolling (滚动) the screen, our brains will look for quick excitement. This makes long-form reading seem difficult and boring. However, when we stop reading deeply, our thinking becomes shallow. Instead of looking at all sides of a problem, people often make quick, emotional (情绪化的) judgments. This can lead to simple and unfair ideas in society. To fight this, many are now “rehabilitating” their minds by starting with easy books or reading just ten pages a day. They want to regain the patience needed to understand complex ideas.
To support this, the Chinese government has introduced new rules to promote reading across the country. There is even a special national reading week every April to encourage everyone to pick up a book. Relearning how to read is more than just a hobby. It is a way to protect our ability to think clearly. By slowing down and finishing a book, we can have better discussions and build a smarter, more thoughtful society for the future.
9. What does the recent report show about adults?
A. They find it easy to focus on long sentences.
B. They enjoy watching short videos more than before.
C. They spend more time on phones than reading books.
D. They spend over three hours reading books every day.
10. What may happen to our brain if we keep scrolling the screen?
A. It will spend more time reading real books.
B. It will learn to think deeply about problems.
C. It will become better at making fair judgments.
D. It will search for quick fun and lose patience for long reading.
11. What does the word “shallow” in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A. Slow and careful.
B. New and different.
C. Not deep or serious.
D. Very clear and strong.
12. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To explain why short videos are harmful to students.
B. To describe how the government helps people read more.
C. To compare different ways of reading books and using phones.
D. To introduce the “reading rehabilitation” movement and its importance.
D
Mr. Allen held out a glass of water with three ice cubes in it. “Why do things float (漂浮)?” he asked the class.
No one said a word.
“Anyone?” Mr. Allen smiled at his students. “Let’s brainstorm some answers.”
He shook the glass gently. The ice cubes went up and down in the water, then floated back to the top.
“Any guesses?”
The students kept quiet.
“What’s the first thing that comes to mind? Remember there aren’t right or wrong answers.” Mr. Allen kept smiling. “Okay. How about this—who can give me the worst answer you can think of?”
“The worst answer?” asked Miguel.
“That’s right.” Mr. Allen nodded.
“Ooh!” shouted Martika. “I’ve got it! Things float because...they have wings!”
Alex disagreed. “If they had wings, they’d be flying, not floating.”
Martika reminded him, “It’s supposed to be a bad answer. What’s your bad answer?”
Alex’s face turned red. “Magic?”
“That’s a good one!” said Mr. Allen quickly. “Sometimes science can seem like magic until we find out what’s going on.”
“Well, I think it’s like clouds floating in the sky.” laughed Cassie. “I like looking at clouds.”
“It’s a good bad answer. I like looking at clouds too.” Mr. Allen smiled, “You know, clouds are made of little water drops.”
“Ice is made of water particles (水微粒/水粒子), too.” cried Miguel. “I remember when you taught us about that.”
“Right,” said Mr. Allen. “But what’s the difference between ice and the water it’s floating in?”
“Ice is a solid (固体), while regular water is a liquid (液体), right?” Martika suggested.
“Exactly!” Mr. Allen shouted.
Ella jumped up, “Isn’t that because the water particles in ice are more spread apart than those in liquid water?”
“They are less dense (密集的),” said Tyler.
“Which makes them float?” added Cassie.
“Good answers, class!” Mr. Allen smiled.

阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Several months ago, Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s 6-year-old son X was seen wearing a traditional tiger hat from Shibadong Village in Xiangxi, Hunan Province, and it quickly became famous worldwide. This special tiger hat features Miao embroidery (以苗绣为特色), an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) hidden deep in the Wuling Mountains.
The tiger hat is partly embroidered and partly handmade. The dog-tooth stitch (针脚) on the brim (帽檐) is a traditional design of Miao embroidery. In Miao culture, dog teeth are believed to keep away evil spirits (恶魔) and protect the weak. So, these simple stitches carry mothers’ deepest wishes for their children to stay safe and healthy.
The tiger hat didn’t become popular by accident. In recent years, Shibadong Village has been mixing old traditions, creative designs, and tourism. This has helped bring Miao embroidery from the mountains to the world. So far, the Shibadong Miao Embroidery Rural Revitalization Demonstration Base has offered jobs to over 500 women in eight nearby villages. Many of them used to work in big cities. Now, they have come back home to work there.
The tiger hat really shows how intangible cultural heritage can drive rural revitalization. It proves that the more rooted a culture is in its own tradition, the more it can speak to the world.

The Person I Admire Most
Life is like a journey, there are always many people who move me a lot. Now, let me share what I have learnt from the textbook.
I admire Spud Webb most, a small basketball player with a big dream. Once his height made it hard for him to realize his dream. But he never lost heart and practised even harder. Through hard work, he finally became an NBA player in 1985 and got great success.
I admire him not only because of his achievements, but also because of his strong mind. He proved that size and body type do not matter—you can do almost anything if you never give up. When I face difficulty in my daily life, his words always raise me up.
