Most of us know lotus roots as a delicious food. People often cook them into tasty dishes like lotus root soup. But do you know this common vegetable has a magic use, even related to an old Chinese legend?
In the story of Nezha, the brave young hero was brought back to life with lotus roots. Today, scientists led by Wu Jun are turning this old story into real science. They found that lotus roots have many small holes inside, called air canals (气腔). After simple processing, they can become natural bone scaffolds (支架)—a kind of support that helps broken bones grow and heal (愈合).
The team did careful tests on mice. They made small holes in the mice’s skulls and inserted (嵌入) processed lotus root scaffolds. After two months, the result was surprising: The mice with lotus root scaffolds had about 50 percent new bone growth, while the other mice without the scaffolds inserted had almost none. What’s more, lotus root scaffolds are much safer than traditional metal ones. They can slowly break down and can naturally be taken in by human bodies, so no second surgery (外科手术) is needed.
Wu’s team can even change the lotus root scaffolds to fit different injuries (损伤). With 3D design and careful cutting, they make scaffolds of different shapes for different bone problems. They also control how fast the scaffolds break down, making sure it matches the speed of bone healing. Now, they plan to test the scaffolds on larger animals like sheep and explore the possibility of turning lotus root into very thin pieces to make wound dressings.
From an old Chinese legend to modern laboratory tests, from a daily dish to a promising medical helper, the common lotus root is full of surprises.
8. Why does the writer mention the story of Nezha?
A. To explain how lotus roots are grown. B. To show Nezha is a brave young hero.
C. To tell readers a funny Chinese story. D. To introduce the magic use of lotus roots.
9. Why are lotus root scaffolds safer than traditional ones?
A. They are easier to carry. B. They look more beautiful.
C. They are cheaper to produce. D. They naturally disappear in the body.
10. What is the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A. Lotus roots will be widely used in hospitals soon.
B. Metal scaffolds are not safe enough for the human body.
C. The team can make different lotus root scaffolds to meet people’s needs.
D. The team has done many tests on small animals like mice.
11. What should be the best structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

Scenic spots (景点) usually hold various fun activities to welcome tourists. These days, real-life NPC performances have become a big hit in China’s cultural tourism.
NPC, or Non-Player Characters, first came from video games. It means the computer-controlled characters that talk and play with game players. These characters make players have more fun while playing games. Now, this idea has come to scenic spots. Professional actors dress up as historical people or local cultural characters, talking and playing with visitors in a natural and relaxing way. They are known as real-life tourism NPCs.
Lots of real-life NPC performances have become very popular online. The famous show “Snow Cake Monkey” in Changchun is loved by tourists for its funny, down-to-earth acts. In Suqian, the actor, who plays the ancient hero Xiang Yu, shows the special charm (魅力) of that time. Also, the funny local matchmakers in Kaifeng and the graceful Tang Dynasty actors in Xi’an make visitors’ trips much more enjoyable.
The popularity of these tourism NPCs shows that people’s travel needs have changed. Modern tourists are no longer satisfied with trips where they only take photos. Instead, they hope to have warm, personal connections with the place. These live shows can make tourists stay longer, help people spend more money in the local area, and make different scenic spots feel less the same.
Besides bringing money and growth to tourism, real-life NPCs help spread traditional culture in a creative way. By mixing historical stories with new interactive (互动的) forms, they make traditional culture easier for young people to understand and enjoy. This new trend (趋势) shows China’s hard work to connect culture with tourism, and pass down our cultural treasures to more people.
12. What are real-life NPCs in tourism?
A. Persons who love playing video games.
B. Players who are controlled by computers.
C. Actors who play cultural roles in scenic spots.
D. Characters who perform in online video games.
13. How does the writer show the popularity of real-life NPC performances in Paragraph 3?
A. By giving examples. B. By listing numbers.
C. By making comparisons. D. By asking questions.
14. What advantages do real-life NPC performances have?
① They make tourists feel closer to the place.
② They make different scenic spots the same.
③ They help people spend more money in the local area.
④ They help spread traditional culture in creative ways.
A. ②③④ B. ①②③ C. ①②④ D. ①③④
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. China’s tourism NPC: A fun story about short trips
B. China’s tourism NPC: A creative designer of short trips
C. China’s tourism NPC: A new attraction of cultural tourism
D. China’s tourism NPC: A traditional form of cultural tourism

10. What is the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A. Lotus roots will be widely used in hospitals soon.

【答案】例文
A Role Model in My Class
In the ordinary moments of daily school life, some people’s qualities quietly shape everyone around them.
My classmate Li Jia is a hard-working and warm-hearted role model for all of us. Last term, she noticed many classmates had trouble with English listening, so she started a 10-minute daily listening practice programme after class. She collected easy, interesting materials and shared them with us every day.
Now most of us have made progress in English. She sets a good example and inspires us to help each other. I learn that small, consistent actions can make a big difference to the whole class.
