George Shull was born in 1874 on a farm in Clark County, Ohio, and his knowledge of plants and hybrids came at an early age. Being needed on the farm, Shull received his early formal education off and on. However, it was added by intense home study so that by 1892, he had taught in a public school, and later attended Antioch College.
In 1901, he graduated from Antioch and went to the University of Chicago to do graduate work. With his knowledge of botany and experience with farming practices, Shull passed the civil service exam, and took up a position as a botanical assistant at the U.S. National Herbarium. He also worked at the U.S. Bureau of Plant Industry as a botanical expert examining as well as evaluating the plants and animals of the Chesapeake Bay and the Currituck Sound. The data he collected during this time was to comprise his Ph.D. paper. And in 1904 he was appointed to be in charge of plant work at the Station for Experimental Evolution.
He began working on corn in 1905. Following Gregor Mendel’s example, Shull obtained pure lines of corn through self-pollination (自花授粉). The pure lines were less healthy and productive, but when he crossed the pure lines, apparently the hybrid yields were better than any of the parents or those pollinated in the open fields. As a consequence, he immediately recognized the potential for using this strategy and device to improve crop yields.
In 1915, Shull accepted a professorship at Princeton University. With his encouragement, Princeton University Press began the publication of a new journal, Genetics. Shull was the managing editor for ten years. Genetics is still one of the top international science journals.
Shull retired in 1942. He and his wife spent most of their later years with their children and grandchildren.
4. What’s Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. George Shull’s contributions. B. George Shull’s research.
C. George Shull’s work experience. D. George Shull’s education.
5. What can we infer about George Shull from the text?
A. His farm experience laid a solid foundation for his later research.
B. He completed his college education mainly by self-study at home.
C. He took the civil service exam to get his position at Antioch College.
D. His Ph.D. paper mainly studied plants and animals on his farm.
6. What was so special about Shull’s method of corn breeding?
A. It completely relied on self-pollination. B. It was first published in Genetics.
C. It was widely accepted in Ohio. D. It focused on crossing pure lines.
7. How does the author mainly develop the text?
A. By giving examples. B. By following time order.
C. By making comparisons. D. By presenting a scientific study.

When Alexander Fleming returned to his lab in 1928, he found a bacterial culture he had grown was infected by fungus (霉菌). The fungus killed any bacteria colony it touched. Rather than simply starting over, Fleming switched his focus to the fungus. He identified the bacteria-killing substance, which he called “penicillin”, and created the new field of antibiotic drugs.
That’s how most people see innovation: a flash of brilliance and a “eureka moment” when a new world is born in an instant. The truth, however, is not that simple. It wasn’t until 1943 that penicillin came into widespread use.
To put Fleming’s discovery in context, consider Ignaz Semmelweis, who pioneered hand washing in maternity wards, significantly reducing childbed fever but receiving criticism instead of fame. That was because in the 1850s, his ideas conflicted with the popular theory, which suggested that disease resulted from “bad air”. After his death in 1865, the germ theory was finally accepted, paving the way for Fleming’s later work.
Fleming was a gifted biologist but a poor communicator. When he published his results in 1929, few took notice. In 1935, Howard Florey and Ernst Chain discovered Fleming’s paper, understood its importance, and developed methods to produce penicillin in quantity. By 1943, with World War II going on fiercely, the War Production Board asked 21 companies to mass-produce penicillin, saving countless lives and ushering in the new age of antibiotics. Fleming, Florey and Chain received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1945.
Penicillin’s success owes much to the government support. For many other groundbreaking innovations like the Internet and GPS, their innovators, while carving their own path, are often uncertain of where the opportunity lies until they team up with other informed officials and big firms that might have the resources to turn their ideas into reality quickly. So, look at any significant innovation and the myth of the lone genius, and the “eureka moment” breaks down.
8. What are the first two paragraphs mainly about?
A. A definition of a traditional concept.
B. A description of a lab story.
C. A correction of a common misunderstanding.
D. An analysis of a scientific phenomenon.
9. What message is conveyed in paragraph 3?
A. Great minds think alike.
B. The early bird catches the worm.
C. A stroke of luck paves the way for success.
D. Early work contributes to later breakthroughs.
10. What does the underlined part “ushering in” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Predicting. B. Starting. C. Delaying. D. Transforming.
11. What can we learn about penicillin from the last two paragraphs?
A. Government support played an important role in its success.
B. Fleming produced large amounts of penicillin in 1929.
C. Florey and Chain doubted the value of Fleming’s paper at first.
D. It was used widely before World War II broke out.

A quiet revolution (变革) is unfolding around us. Artificial intelligence (AI), once a science fantasy, is now reshaping our daily lives. From voice assistants and movie recommendations to medical diagnosis and self-driving vehicles, AI is everywhere. It represents a new age of thinking machines that learn, adapt, and make decisions.
The heart of modern AI is machine learning, which allows computers to learn from data rather than follow fixed instructions. Using neural networks inspired by the human brain, AI systems recognize patterns and improve over time. This technology enables impressive achievements such as language translation, image recognition, and even creative tasks like composing music or generating art.
AI integrates smoothly into everyday life. It powers Internet search engines, social media recommendations, GPS services, and smart home devices. In healthcare, it assists in analyzing medical images, predicting diseases, and developing personalized treatments. AI also helps find cheating in finance, upgrade delivery, and improve agricultural productivity through smart farming techniques.
However, its growing influence brings both opportunities and challenges. In the workplace, AI performs repetitive tasks on its own but also creates new roles in technology and data analytics. It raises important concerns such as data privacy and the risk of misuse in monitoring systems. Ensuring that AI is fair, accountable and matches human values remains a critical task for researchers and policymakers.
Looking ahead, AI holds great promise for solving complex problems in science, climate research, and education. It could speed up medical discoveries, help address environmental issues, and provide personalized learning experiences for students. However, its development must be guided by responsibility and global cooperation to ensure all of humanity can benefit.
In conclusion, AI is not just a technological advancement — it is reshaping how we live, work, and understand the world. With careful management, it can become a valuable partner that boosts human capability and helps build a fairer and promising future for everyone.
12. How is the third paragraph developed?
A. By giving examples. B. By providing data.
C. By quoting an expert. D. By defining a concept.
13. What effect does AI have in the workplace according to the text?
A. It reduces new positions. B. It increases work difficulty.
C. It takes over repetitive tasks. D. It replaces data analysts.
14. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A. AI will quickly solve environmental problems.
B. AI will cure most diseases with medical research.
C. Personalized learning reduces classroom interaction.
D. The proper development of AI requires united efforts.
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. Why AI needs human values. B. The daily applications of AI.
C. How AI is changing our world. D. The challenges of governing AI.

“Today’s test scores will decide who has topped the class, so be ready,” Miss Natasha announced to the class.
Miss Natasha collected everyone’s test papers, and then cleared her throat to announce the results as she distributed the test papers among the students. Everyone was nervous about what their scores might be.
Ali and Bob had been competitors since Grade One and each year it was always one of the two that came first in the class. This year, there was still tough competition between them both, and they eagerly awaited the results.
“Peter, 18,” announced Miss Natasha as she handed him his paper. “Eric, 16, Ali, 20, Bob, 19…and lastly Alia, 15.”
Once Miss Natasha had distributed all of the test papers in class, everyone soon realized that Ali had beaten Bob by one mark and topped the class. Everyone congratulated Ali and he was happy.
As Ali was about to put his paper in his bag, he noticed that by mistake Miss Natasha had given him two marks for an incorrect answer. He was shocked. He rechecked his answers and realized that all his answers were correct except for that one. However, if he informed Miss Natasha about it, he would lose not only two marks but also his first position.
After considering the situation, he decided to keep quiet and went home. However, he kept thinking about it all evening. Should he or shouldn’t he tell Miss Natasha about it? He thought that it had already been done, and no one would notice if he didn’t tell anyone, but then another thought crossed his mind. If he didn’t tell the teacher about it and stayed top of the class, he would have taken a title that should have belonged to Bob.
This situation put Ali in a hard position. His parents always taught him to do the right thing, but doing the right thing here meant he would no longer be top of the class. He remembered how everyone had cheered for him and congratulated him in class.
Para.1: He knew that by informing the teacher about it, he would lose it all.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para.2: “My son, you are a brave and honest boy so just do what you think is right,” his mother continued.
