Betty’s mother opened the door. She had a look at Betty’s bedroom.
“What a mess! It looks as if a hurricane (飓风) passed through Betty’s bedroom,” said her mother. “I must ask her to clean it.”
Betty was having breakfast. Her father came into the kitchen and said, “Mum wants you to clean your room. It looks as if a hurricane passed through it.”
Joe, Betty’s little brother, asked, “A hurricane? Is that a bad thing?”
“Yes, it is,” said his father.
“I’ll do it after school, Dad,” said Betty. “My first class is geography and Mr Miller hates people to be late.” And off she ran through the front door.
Twenty minutes later, Betty ran into her classroom.
“Today,” said Mr Miller, “we’re going to learn about hurricanes. Have any of you seen a hurricane?” Betty thought about her bedroom, but she said nothing.
“I haven’t seen one. Not a real one but I watched a programme on TV and I know they destroy things and leave a mess,” said James who sat next to Betty.
“Yes,” said Mr Miller. “But today I’m going to surprise you. Sometimes hurricanes do good.”
“Hurricanes can be good things?” Betty asked.
“Oh, yes,” said Mr Miller. “Hurricanes bring a lot of water to rivers and lakes that are becoming dry. Animals and fish come back to live in them. Hurricanes also pick up heat from the very hot areas of the world and drop it in less warm places.”
“So, hurricanes can be good things.” Betty said to herself. “I’m going to show Mum the good part.”
When Betty got home in the afternoon, she began to clean up her bedroom. She put all of her things in their proper places.
“Mum,” she called, “can you come here for a minute?”

One of my least favourite chores is cleaning my bedroom, but I have to do it. If my bedroom is untidy, I find it hard to relax and impossible to do any work! My mum always says “A tidy home is a sign of a tidy mind”, and I think this is true. If everything is a mess, you just can’t think clearly.
Studies show that people are usually more successful if they work, study, or live in a clean and tidy environment. A study shows that many children with bad behaviour (行为) come from messy houses. Children who grow up in dirty houses would probably be unhealthy and they fall sick more often too. This is why people with tidier homes are often healthier and more successful. My mum is a good example of this. She makes sure our home is always very clean and comfortable, so my sister and I hardly ever fall sick. Everyone loves her and she is very successful at her job in a bank.
I am not a naturally tidy person, but I am trying to develop the habit of tidying up every day. Maybe one day I will be as tidy and successful as my mum! That’s my wish too.
63. What does the mum think a tidy home is?
A. A sign of a messy thought. B. A sign of a tidy mind.
C. A sign of bad behaviour. D. A sign of a sick body.
64. What environment makes the writer and his sister healthy?
A. An untidy but big room. B. A messy house.
C. A clean and comfortable home. D. A simple small house.
65. What kind of person does the writer want to be?
A. A sick and unsuccessful person. B. An unhealthy but tidy person.
C. An untidy and unhealthy person. D. A successful and tidy person.
66. What does the writer call on (呼吁) people to do?
A. Keep the room clean and tidy. B. Stay healthy.
C. Be successful. D. Think clearly.
D
Many kids help parents do the dishes, sweep the floor or take out the rubbish. In return, some kids get money or other rewards (奖励) from their parents, such as twenty minutes to play with the smart phones. But some people think that kids shouldn’t get rewards for doing chores. One of them is Susie Walton, a parenting educator (育儿教育者) and family coach. She believes (相信) if kids get rewards, they will think that work isn’t worth doing unless they get something in return. For example, kids won’t sweep the floor if they see it is dirty. But they will clean the floor if their parents reward them for it.
“Every house is a team effort,” Walton said. “A home is the living space for everyone in the family. It’s important for kids to see that they are members in the family and they all have a responsibility to keep their homes clean.”
Other people hold different opinions. They believe that money or other rewards can encourage kids to do more chores. It also teaches them real-world lessons. They can learn about how they need to work to make money.
Now, there are also apps that encourage kids to do chores. The apps give kids points and digital ( 数字的 ) gifts that can be used either online or in life.
With the app Chore Monster, kids can get digital points after doing chores. Kids can exchange ( 交换 ) their points for real rewards, such as time to play video games or a trip to the mall.
“Our goal is to encourage kids to do chores, so they can get rewards,” says Chris Bergman, founder of Chore Monster. “Kids need positive power to make them do chores.”
67. Which of the following does Susie Walton probably agree with?
A. Kids can get extra computer time for doing chores.
B. Kids should be rewarded for doing chores.
C. Kids should help their parents do chores without rewards.
D. Parents decide what kids can do for the family.
68. What does the underlined word “responsibility” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Treasure. B. Landscape. C. Hobby. D. Duty.
69. What can kids get by using apps?
A. A trip to the mall. B. Digital points.
C. Time to play games. D. Real rewards.
70. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Kids Should Get Rewards for Doing Chores or Not
B. Kids Should Get Rewards from Their Parents
C. Kids Shouldn’t Do Chores
D. How to Do Chores
第二节 阅读表达(共5题;每题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,简略回答问题。
Labour classes (劳动课) at school can help students be active and happy in life. At the same time, students can learn the meaning of labour. Students in middle school will have at least one labour class a week.
There are many interesting labour classes now. Students from a school in Chongqing had a class about catching fish in the river and learning about their habits. In Shanxi Province, students made tofu and also cooked it by themselves. The labour classes made them feel happy when they cooked delicious meals. Some students also kept small animals at home like chickens. This helped students learn how to care for living things and also made them more interested in biology.
According to the new policy (政策), middle school students need to learn the following skills in labour classes: cleaning their rooms and classrooms, picking proper (合适的) clothes for travel, cooking three or four meals and taking part in labour activities such as planting or fishing.
A study shows that doing labour work is good for students. Students can get more self-control (自控), do better in school, and feel happy from it. Labour classes not only teach them important skills but also are a great way to relax during a busy school day. Do you want to take part in labour activities?
71. How many classes a week will middle school students have at least?
