Running Like the Wind
Xu Mei used to be the weakest girl in her mountain village school. She was small, thin and often got sick. “Nothing about her suggested she could run,” said her PE teacher, Mr Tan, “but she never complained when others did.”
One day, Mr Tan noticed that the girl could keep running long after most students stopped. He began to train her after class. “It is important for you to believe in yourself,” he told her again and again. Xu Mei practised every morning before breakfast and every evening after school.
A year later, however, something unlucky happened. Xu Mei broke her ankle in a race and had to stay in bed for two months. She wanted to give up. During those hard weeks, Mr Tan visited her every weekend. He brought her homework and told her stories about runners who had come back after being hurt.
Slowly Xu Mei returned to the playground. She trained even harder than before. At the city sports meeting last spring, she won the 800-metre race, and people could hardly believe their eyes.

From ‘Land-locked’ to ‘Land-linked’
On 3 December 2021, a new railway line linking Kunming in China with Vientiane, the capital of Laos, was opened. The line runs 1,035 kilometres through high mountains and deep valleys. Before it was built, goods travelling between the two countries had to depend mainly on rough roads, which was slow and costly.
Now everything has changed. A trip that used to take days can be made in about ten hours. Coffee, rice and fruit from Laos can reach Chinese supermarkets much faster, while machines and daily goods made in China find their way to Lao shops. As a result, prices have dropped and local incomes have risen.
The railway has brought new chances to villages along the line, too. Some villagers have opened small hotels, and others serve food to passengers. Young people who once left home have come back to run these businesses, so their children no longer grow up without their parents.
The line has also done something greater than carrying goods and passengers: it has given Laos easy access to the sea through China's transport network. That is why this land-locked country now calls itself “land-linked”. Experts believe the line will continue to boost trade and tourism, and thereby bring the two neighbours closer.
“Although our countries are different in size,” said a Lao engineer, “the railway shows how neighbours can share opportunities and build a better future together.”

The Scientist Who Found a Cure in an Old Book
Every year, malaria killed millions of people, especially those in Africa and Asia. In the late 1960s, Chinese scientist Tu Youyou was asked to find a way to fight the disease. At that time many Western medicines had already stopped working, and researchers all over the world were under great pressure.
Tu and her team studied more than 2,000 traditional Chinese recipes. One sentence in an ancient book gave her a hint: sweet wormwood. Most researchers had tried boiling the plant, but high temperature destroyed its active property. Tu thought the other way round — she used a low temperature to extract the substance instead. In 1971, the 91st experiment finally worked.
Still, nobody knew whether the new medicine was safe for humans. Without waiting for more tests on animals, Tu volunteered to take it herself. “As head of the group, it was my duty,” she said simply. Thankfully the test was successful, and soon thousands of patients were saved.
In 2015, at the age of 85, Tu became the first Chinese scientist to win a Nobel Prize in science for work done inside China. Even after that, she never stopped working in her laboratory. When she was asked about the secret of her perseverance, she answered quietly, “Interest, hard work, and never giving up.”

Today Xu Mei is the captain of the school running team. She often helps younger students with their training. “Whenever I want to stop, I remember Mr Tan's words,” she says. “It is always hard at first, but the harder you work, the luckier you get.”

B. It has pushed young people to leave their villages.
C. It has made local products more expensive.

M: Welcome to your village, Ms Wu. It has changed a lot over the last few years.
W: Yes. We've changed the way we farm. I used to grow a few vegetables on a small farm.

M: Yes. Together with his team, he collected more than 40 million seeds, and his love for his job lives on in his students.
C) 听一段独白,完成 16 至 20 小题(每空不超过 1 个词)。独白读两遍。
Hello, everyone! This is the school radio. I'm Lin Tao. Today I'd like to share the great changes in my hometown.
Ten years ago, my village was very poor. It took local farmers three hours to carry their vegetables to the market because there was no wide road. Now everything has changed. A wide road and a big bridge have been built near our village, so trucks can reach the county town in about twenty minutes. Over the last ten years, more than sixty new houses have gone up, and a reading room and a small clinic have been opened. The greatest change of all is the people. Many young people who used to work in big cities have returned to start small businesses at home. My uncle is one of them. He has set up a small factory and has provided jobs for thirty villagers. It is inspiring that he never forgets where he comes from.
