Climbing to the Top of Britain
Each year thousands of people climb Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain. Because of its northerly location, the weather can be very cold.
It was February and it was my first big winter climb. Our route (路线) was up the north face of the mountain to Tower Ridge from the camp. It’s six hundred meters up — probably the longest climb in Britain.
Some of the group members were very experienced. We took all kinds of safety equipment, including lights, hard hats and clothing. Although the weather was perfect, with no strong winds, there was still a feeling of nervousness when we set out. Ben Nevis in winter is always difficult to climb.
Soon my legs felt heavy. I had to rest very often because I was the weakest member of the group. The others sometimes stopped for a break to let me catch up, but as soon as I reached them, they set off again. I promised myself that in future I would always train correctly before a climb.
After 200 meters, we reached the beginning of Tower Ridge, the route (路线) that would take us to the top of Ben Nevis. It’s only a meter and a half wide and the mountain drops away hundreds of meters on each side. We knew we had to keep calm and pay attention to every step as we moved slowly along it.
After seven hours of climbing, we reached the top. We could see the island of Skye, 48 kilometers away.
On Ben Nevis, getting back down to the camp can be as difficult as going up. You need to be able to read a map correctly — a wrong turn could lead to slopes (斜坡) too dangerous to go down in winter. I was glad we had decided to take it in turns to do that job.
When I was safe at the camp, I felt I really enjoyed the experience. At least I made it to the top.
24. Why did the writer have to rest very often while climbing Ben Nevis?
A. The weather was very cold. B. He stopped to wait for others.
C. He was the weakest of the group. D. His safety equipment was too heavy.
25. What did the group need to do when they got down the mountain?
A. Read a map correctly. B. Catch up other groups.
C. Check their equipment. D. Point out the island of Skye.
26. What helped the writer and the team finish the climb successfully?
A. Help from local mountain people.
B. A short and safe climbing route.
C. The writer’s strong body and skills.
D. Full preparation, teamwork and calmness.

When watching sports events, we often notice athletes wearing earphones on while preparing in the locker room or entering the stadium They keep their eyes shut, and gentry nod along the beats. It seems the music is giving them power and cheering them up for the competition. We sometimes do the same. You might have a list of favorite songs for your morning exercises. But is there any science behind such practices?
According to a recent research, it turns out there is. Music actually does make us feel powerful, but not all songs have the same effect.
The research was led by Dennis Hspu at Northwest University in the US. His team had people listen to 31 songs of different types. The listeners felt powerful after listening to some songs, such as Queen’s We Will Rock You and 2 Unlimited’s Get Ready for This.
Researchers also found that high-power music made people want to take control in social events and come first in competition. That matters a lot in sports. “It’s commonly said that sports are 90 percent mental (心理的) and only 10 percent physical (身体的),” The Huffington Post reported.
Great athletes know this idea well. NBA player Kobe Bryant, for example, often put on big headphones and even fell into deep thought to improve his game and reduce his anxiety.
As for the reason for music’s magical power, Hsu’s team came up with one possible explanation: when people hear music that expresses a sense of power, they mimic (模拟) these feelings in their mind.
When choosing music, we also need to look at the type of music, according to researchers. In earlier research by the Music in Exercise and Sports Group at Brunei University in London, they found that pop was perfect for slower, more repetitive-type (重复类型的) tasks. So, if you are warming up or cooling down after exercises, pop songs are the correct choice. Dance music was found to be best suitable to strength (力量) and weight training because it’s “fast and rhythmical (有节奏感的).” During high-intensity (高强度的) workouts, though, you’d better not listen to rock. Its different changes in tempo (节拍) can affect your rhythm.
27. What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To introduce favorite songs for morning exercises.
B. To lead in the topic that music matters in sports.
C. To give an example of athletes’ daily life.
D. To explain how to choose music.
28. According to the passage, Dennis Hsu probably agrees that ________.
A. listening to music always makes athletes relaxed
B. powerful music can make people produce similar feelings in their mind
C. the result of a game is mainly affected by the physical condition of the players
D. most athletes still don’t know the effects of high-power music on their performance
29. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Pop music is a reasonable choice for high-intensity workouts.
B. Rock music helps people keep their rhythms when exercising.
C. People are advised to listen to pop music before and after exercise.
D. People should dance to music while doing strength and weight training.
D
Since the beginning of middle school, online tools have become an important part of my daily life. I use them to hand in homework, check grades, get information, and communicate with others. As we leave more information online, our personal information can be collected without our knowledge. At first, I seldom worried about privacy (隐私), but now I believe every student should take it seriously.
One problem is that apps and websites may record our online activity in ways we don’t easily notice. For example, after you look up a restaurant online, similar posts or ads (广告) may suddenly appear on your “for you page”. Some social media apps may use tools called “tracking pixels” (追踪像素). They are very small images (图像) placed on websites, in emails, or in apps. They can record our activity across websites and devices (设备).
Another danger comes from browsers (浏览器) and search engines. In recent years, some news reports have said that a technology company collected users’ data (数据) even after users turned off a setting to limit data sharing. The same company was also reported to collect data from many smartphone users without their agreement. This is worrying because students use search engines so often, yet they may not know where their data goes or how it is used.
Problems can also happen when companies change their rules. A social media company, once viewed as a leader in user privacy, changed a privacy feature (功能) for private messages. The company later said this protection would end after a set date. For a company that once said privacy was very important, this change makes its promise (承诺) of privacy seem less believable.
Students themselves may also face serious dangers to our personal information because of the information they share publicly. Many students post their age and even school name on social media, but these details can help strangers know who they are and where they spend time. Students should avoid sharing personal information such as their date of birth, full name, or ID numbers, because strangers may impersonate them, break into their accounts (账户), or cause other serious problems. Photos of a home, a school, or a familiar street may also show parts of a student’s daily life to strangers.
Privacy should not be seen as a small problem, because personal safety should always come first. By sharing less personal information and thinking carefully before posting, we can better protect ourselves and the people around us.
30. Why does the writer mention the restaurant example in Paragraph 2?
A. To explain why students enjoy personalized posts.
B. To show how online behavior may be followed quietly.
C. To compare different ways of finding restaurants online.
D. To suggest that social media gives students useful advice.
31. Which action would the writer most likely want students to avoid?
A. Discussing weekend activity ideas in a class group.
B. Checking grades through a school website with a personal account.
C. Changing a privacy setting before searching for information online.
D. Posting a photo that shows the name of a place they pass by every day.
32. What does the word “impersonate” in Paragraph 5 most probably mean?
A. To change someone’s online records.
B. To follow where someone often goes.
C. To sell someone’s personal information online.
D. To use someone’s information and act as that person.
33. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Students’ Data: What Is Collected and Shared Online
B. Students’ Privacy: How Apps and Websites Collect Data
C. Online Privacy: What Students Should Notice and Protect
D. Online Warning: Why Public Sharing May Bring Problems

Young Star Shines
Over the years, Chinese players have been doing very well in table tennis. Now, young athletes from Generation Z (Z世代) are becoming the stars of the game.
Born in 2000, Sun Yingsha has been given the nickname (绰号) “Little Devil” by her fans. When she was little, Sun was sensitive (敏感的) to the sound of a table tennis ball hitting the ground. “I felt I had some talent,” she told China Daily. Becoming a world top player like her idol Zhang Yining has always been her dream. Talent alone is not enough. She spends hours practising every day. She repeats simple moves thousands of times and never gets tired of boring training. After each practice, she carefully watches videos of her games to find out her weak points.
However, there have been challenges along the way. She took part in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and it was there that she faced huge losses (失败). “I was not well-rounded (全面的) enough to win the gold medal in the women’s singles (单打),” Sun said. Instead of feeling upset for a long time, she calmed down quickly. She thought carefully about her mistakes and made new training plans to improve herself.
Sun believes that life is always full of ups and downs. “Courage and a strong mind can make a good athlete,” she said. “What keeps me going are the goals and dreams I set for myself.”
At the 2023 Singapore Smash, Sun won the women’s singles, the women’s doubles, and the mixed doubles, becoming the first athlete to get three gold medals at the tournament (锦标赛). During the fierce competitions on the table tennis court of the Paris Olympics in 2024, Sun attracted people’s attention with an amazing “leaping crash (跳跃扣杀)”.
When talking about younger table tennis players, Sun advises them to keep their love and stay focused. “If you truly love table tennis, I hope you can hold on to it,” she said.
34. When was Sun Yingsha born?
35. Did Sun Yingsha face any challenges during her journey as a table tennis player?
