Recently, our class had a discussion on whether social media will make us closer or further apart. Opinions on the issue differ sharply.
Some students believe it brings us closer. With social media, we can chat with friends anytime and share our lives instantly, even when we are far apart. However, others argue that it drives us apart. They say people stare at their phones all day and ignore the people sitting right beside them, which weakens real communication.
In my opinion, technology itself is neither good nor bad. What matters is how we use it. If we use it wisely and keep a balance between online and real life, it will surely bring us closer.
第二节
Worse still, I had to keep track of all the special times. I had to arrive early for the karate test on Monday. I had to stay later to help with swimming pool cleanup on Friday.I had to pick up Alfie 15 minutes early on Saturday. I had to walk Muffinon Tuesday afternoons. I ran around like a chicken with its head off, on the verge of breaking down. It was then that I recalled my mother's warning. Although embarrassed beyond words, I worked up the nerve and walked to my parents, making a clean breast of my trouble and calling for backup.
Luckily, I, with my parents, came up with a solution to get organized. We started with a calendar, on which I marked all my tasks with a red marker. Then we found three bags respectively used for my dog-walking stuff, karate stuff and swim stuff. We also put a whiteboard in the kitchen to make sure that I took the right bag on the appropriate day. From then on, my beyond-busy summer was smooth sailing, during which I learned a valuable lesson: If you tried to use the dog's rope as your karate belt, it's time to improve your organizational skill.

A
根据The Silent Forest (Mystery/Adventure)部分中的“Priced at $18 (20% off until June 30), it also includes discussion questions for book clubs.” 故选A。
根据Beyond the Stars (Science Fiction)部分中“Astrophysicist Dr. Liam Cole combines real Mars exploration research with a fascinating story of a young astronaut’s struggle to build humanity’s first Martian (火星的) colony.”
根据文章第一段中的“I rolled my eyes, convinced that reaching the summit was the only measure of success.”(我翻了一个白眼,坚信到达山顶才是衡量成功的唯一标准)。
根据文章的第二段中的“My teammate Jake, a confident athlete, dashed ahead, laughing at my cautious pace.”、“Jake collapsed on a narrow ledge, trembling from thirst and muscle pain.”以及“Meanwhile, I adjusted my equipment, sipped water every 15 minutes, and studied the rock formations.”
根据文章第二段中的“Meanwhile, I adjusted my equipment, sipped water every 15 minutes, and studied the rock formations.”和“When storm clouds darkened the sky, panic struck me. Sarah’s voice echoed in my mind: ‘Control what you can. Let go of what you can’t.’”以及第三段中的“I focused on three-step rhythms: plant, pull, and breathe.” 故选A。
根据第三段中的“That moment reshaped my understanding of growth — it wasn’t about conquering peaks but embracing humility and patience.”以及最后一段中的“Failure isn’t falling, it’s refusing to learn why you fell.”和“Every struggle and setback carves resilience (适应力) into our stories. The true summit isn’t a physical place — it’s the wisdom we carry back to the world below.”
根据第一段“After COVID-19, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that while the number of nurses has increased in the past three years, the U.S. still experiences a shortage of registered nurses, and that there will be over one million unfilled nursing jobs. So what’s the solution? Robots.(在2019冠状病毒病之后,美国劳工统计局预测,虽然护士人数在过去三年中有所增加,但美国仍然面临注册护士短缺的问题,将有超过100万个护士职位空缺。那么解决方案是什么呢?)”及划线词组下文“Toyohashi University of Technology has developed Terapio, a robotic medical cart that can deliver medicines and other items.(日本丰桥工业大学开发了一款机器人医疗车Terapio,可以运送药品和其他物品)”可知,在使用机器人补充护士短缺问题上,日本走在了前面。由此可知,划线词组ahead of the curve与A选项“Taking the lead(领先)”同义。故选A。
根据第三段中的“Telepresence robots such as MantaroBot, Vgo, and Giraff can be controlled through a computer, smartphone, or tablet, allowing family members or doctors to remotely monitor patients or Skype (网络电话) them. (像MantaroBot ,Vgo和Giraff这样的远程呈现机器人可以通过电脑、智能手机或平板电脑进行控制,允许家庭成员或医生远程检查患者)”可推知,远程呈现机器人在医院协助医生进行远程诊断时,可能会达到正确的目的。故选D。
30.D推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的“This conversational robot companion has cameras in its eyes, which allow it to track patients and use appropriate facial expressions and body language in its interactions. (这个会说话的机器人伴侣的眼睛里有摄像头,可以跟踪病人,并在互动中使用适当的面部表情和肢体语言)”可推知,Android F的特别吸引人之处在于其适当的互动反应。故选D。
31.C主旨大意题。根据第一段“After COVID-19, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that while the number of nurses has increased in the past three years, the U.S. still experiences a shortage of registered nurses, and that there will be over one million unfilled nursing jobs. So what’s the solution? 由此可知,C选项“Robots — a good supplement to nurses(机器人——护士的良好补充)”概括文章主要内容,符合文章标题。故选C。
D
根据第一段中“This trend has driven scientists to search for safe, natural preservatives. They have turned their attention to a part of the cashew nut (腰果) that is often thrown away — the shell.( 这一趋势促使科学家们寻找安全、天然的防腐剂。他们将注意力转向了腰果中通常会被丢弃的部分——果壳。)”可知,科学家研究腰果壳是为了寻找天然替代人工防腐剂的物质。
33. D 细节理解题。根据第三段中“During storage, researchers tested the meat samples to count live bacteria and check common spoilage organisms. They also monitored changes in pH and moisture conditions, and tracked bacterial growth at room temperature. It was discovered that the CNSL-treated meat showed significantly less bacterial growth than untreated meat.( 在储存期间,研究人员对肉样进行了检测,以统计活菌数量并检查常见的变质微生物。他们还监测了 pH 值和湿度的变化情况,并在室温下追踪了细菌的生长情况。结果发现,经过 CNSL 处理的肉类的细菌生长量明显少于未处理的肉类。)”可知,整个实验的核心是验证 CNSL 抑制细菌生长、防止肉类变质的效果,微生物评估的主要焦点就是CNSL 的抗菌有效性。
34. D 推理判断题。根据第三段中“The effect was strongest at higher concentrations, with a 2.0% solution providing excellent protection while maintaining meat quality. Even at room temperature, it effectively delayed the meat’s souring process and reduced bacteria growth, helping the beef stay fresh-looking longer.( 这种效果在较高浓度下最为显著,2.0%的溶液能提供出色的保护作用同时又能保持肉的品质。即使在室温下,它也能有效延缓肉类的变质过程并减少细菌生长,使牛肉看起来更新鲜更久远。)”可知,实验结果表明,CNSL 的抗菌效果随浓度升高而增强,说明其浓度与肉类的保鲜期密切相关。
35. B 推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Still, this study opens a window into nature’s own way of keeping food fresh — hidden inside a humble cashew shell.( 不过,这项研究为我们打开了一扇窗,让我们得以了解大自然保持食物新鲜的方式——它隐藏在一颗普通的腰果壳之中。)”
36. G 空前句“In recent years, a new travel trend has quietly arisen among busy students and young professionals: micro-travel.”介绍了“微旅游”这种旅游方式已悄然兴起,空后句“This trend reflects a growing desire to balance modern life’s demands with meaningful experiences — all without breaking the bank or exhausting limited vacation days.(这种趋势反映出了人们日益增长的平衡现代生活需求和有意义的经历的渴望,而所有这一切都不需要摧毁你的银行存款和浪费你有限的假期时间。)” G“Unlike traditional vacations, micro-travel focuses on short, immersive weekend trips to nearby cultural destinations.(不像传统旅游,微旅游关注的是短期的、沉浸式的去周边文化目的地的周末旅游。)”
E“With rising travel costs, short trips reduce expenses on transportation and accommodation.(随着旅游费用的升高,短期旅游降低了在交通和住宿方面的成本。)”
D“Apps like TripAdvisor or local tourism websites make it easy to plan a 48-hour adventure.(像TripAdvisor这样的小程序或者地方旅游网站都方便人们制定48小时的旅游计划。)”
F“These experiences create lasting memories and foster a deeper understanding of diverse cultures.(这些经历都给人们留下了永久的记忆并培养了人们对不同文化的更深刻的理解。)”
A“The rise of micro-travel benefits both travelers and communities.(微旅游的兴起造福了旅游者和社区经济。)” 故选A。

M: Put it on the scale.
Text 4

W: Are you enjoying your new job, Tom?
M: It’s great, thanks. I’m doing really well, and it’s great having the extra money. It’s the same salary as before, but I get paid a bonus every three months.

M: I’m actually enjoying not having to drive or hunt for a parking space!

Text 8
W: So, Eric, how is your life in Greenland?
M: Oh, I live on the coast and make a living as a fisherman, so I can get a view of the sea every day. That’s why I enjoy living there.
W: I heard that winters in Greenland are somewhat shorter than they used to be. Is it because of global warming, I guess?
M: Yes, that’s true. Have you heard of “the greening of Greenland”?
W: “The greening”? What does that mean?
M: Well, the average temperature in Greenland is rising faster than that in other places. Between 2001 and 2011, it was on average 1.5 degrees Celsius warmer than it was during the 20th century. In order to lower the temperature, now I have planted trees around my house. Besides, farmers have grown more grass for their animals than before.
W: It’s time to take action to protect the world.
Text 9
M: Here’s the new menu for the restaurant, Jenny!
W: Oh, Terry! I love the addition of the seafood and vegetarian options. They’re wonderful and expensive but I think they’ll make a big difference.
M: It’ll also help us stand out from the competition and attract a wider range of customers.
W: Yeah, good idea!
M: I also want to start offering delivery services. We can reach more customers that way. What do you think?
W: We’ll need delivery drivers.
M: Allen said he’d be happy to do it at first. If we need more people, we can hire some.
W: How about the packaging?
M: I’ve got that covered. I increased the order for leftovers packaging.
W: That’s perfect then
M: Umm, I’ll handle the scheduling to make room for the deliveries. Do you want to add anything to the menu before we finalize it?
W: How about a deal for repeat customers? It’ll be good for repeat customer loyalty, and it’ll be another selling point for marketing. I’ll add it to our website.
M: Great idea. I’ll make sure to include that in our promotions. The new menu looks like it’s going to be amazing!
Text 10
W: How do things get their names? That is not always an easy question to answer. There are many different ways. Today let’s look at how two things got their names.
Many people associate kiwifruit with New Zealand, but this fruit is actually native to China. China is the top producer of kiwifruit. A teacher from New Zealand took it from China in 1904. Then in 1959, a New Zealand company wanted to ship the fruit abroad. They named it kiwi after their national bird. By the 1970s, everyone was calling the fruit by that name.
Next, let’s talk about zippers. What would we do without zippers? This clever little invention is used to fasten many different things. Zippers were developed by several people over many years starting in 1851. During that time, the device had a number of names. Finally in 1923, an American company named a “zipper” and Trademarked it. The word zipper comes from the sound it makes when it opens or closes. However, the company lost its trademark in 1930 when zipper became popular as a general term. Nowadays ninety percent of zippers are produced by a Japanese company called YKK.

At 15, I unwillingly joined a mountain-climbing camp in the Rockies. My fear of heights made me freeze, but my parents insisted it would “build character.” On the first morning, our instructor, Sarah, gathered us at the base. “This climb isn’t about speed or strength,” she said. “It’s about listening — to your body, the mountain, and your teammates.” I rolled my eyes, convinced that reaching the summit was the only measure of success.
My teammate Jake, a confident athlete, dashed ahead, laughing at my cautious pace. “You’re wasting time!” he yelled. By midday, however, his confidence broke. Jake collapsed on a narrow ledge, trembling from thirst and muscle pain. Meanwhile, I adjusted my equipment, sipped water every 15 minutes, and studied the rock formations. When storm clouds darkened the sky, panic struck me. Sarah’s voice echoed in my mind: “Control what you can. Let go of what you can’t.”
The final stretch tested everyone. Jake fell behind, humbled and silent. I focused on three-step rhythms: plant, pull, and breathe. At the summit, wind beat my face as I gazed at the valley below. Jake approached, voice shaky. “I wanted to prove I was the best,” he admitted. “But I forgot to respect the mountain.” That moment reshaped my understanding of growth — it wasn’t about conquering peaks but embracing humility and patience.
Years later, as a guide, I teach philosophy at a high school. One student recently asked, “What if I fail?” I smiled. “Failure isn’t falling, it’s refusing to learn why you fell.” Mountains mirror life’s struggles: unpredictable, demanding, yet transformative Every struggle and setback carves resilience (适应力) into our stories. The true summit isn’t a physical place — it’s the wisdom we carry back to the world below.
24. What initial attitude did the author have toward the instructor’s advice?
A. Enthusiastic. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Confused.
25. Why did Jake fail to climb the mountain?
A. He wanted the author to win. B. He lacked proper equipment.
C. He rushed without preparation. D. He had to help other climbers.
26. Which of the following words best describes the author?
A. Patiently observant. B. Eagerly ambitious.
C. Competitively driven. D. Emotionally attached.
27. What lesson does the author learn from this climbing?
A. Winning requires fighting bravely. B. Physical strength guarantees success.
C. Teamwork outweighs personal goals. D. Success values steady effort over shortcuts.
C
After COVID-19, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that while the number of nurses has increased in the past three years, the U.S. still experiences a shortage of registered nurses, and that there will be over one million unfilled nursing jobs. So what’s the solution? Robots.
Japan is ahead of the curve when it comes to this trend. Toyohashi University of Technology has developed Terapio, a robotic medical cart that can make hospital rounds, deliver medications and other items, and retrieve records(检索记录). This type of robot will likely be one of the first to be implemented in hospital.
Robots capable of social engagement help with loneliness as well as cognitive functioning, but the robot itself doesn’t have to engage directly — it can serve as a mediator for human communication. Telepresence robots such as MantaroBot, Vgo, and Giraff can be controlled through a computer, smartphone, or tablet, allowing family members or doctors to remotely monitor patients or Skype them. If you can’t get to the nursing home to visit grandma, you can use a telepresence robot to hang out with her.
A robot’s appearance affects its ability to successfully interact with humans, which is why the Human-Interactive Robot Research decided to develop a robotic nurse that looks like a huge teddy bear. RIBA, also known as “Robear,” can help patients into and out of wheelchairs and beds with its strong arms.
On the less cute and more scary side there is Actroid F, which has such resilient skin and natural hair color that some patients may not know the difference. This conversational robot companion has cameras in its eyes, which allow it to track patients and use appropriate facial expressions and body language in its interactions.
It’s important to note that robotic nurses don’t decide courses of treatment or make diagnoses. Instead, they perform routine and laborious tasks, freeing nurses up to attend to patients with immediate needs. This is one industry where it seems the integration of robots will lead to cooperation, not replacement.
28. What does the underlined part in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Take the lead. B. Reach the standard.
C. Set a record. D. Miss a turn.
29. Telepresence robots may serve their right purposes in hospital when ______.
A. they collect medical records for patients
B. they deliver food to clinical doctors
C. they move the mobility-disabled patients
D. they assist doctors with long-distance diagnoses
30. What is the distinctive attraction of Actroid F?
A. Its scary arm strength. B. Its adorable appearance.
C. Its human-like voice. D. Its proper interactive response.
31. What is the suitable title for the passage?
A. Robots — the future replacement of nurses
B. Robots — the earth-shaking reform in hospitals
C. Robots — a good supplement to nurses
D. Robots — a new way to treat patients
D
In recent years, consumers have increasingly sought “clean-label” foods — products made with natural ingredients. This trend has driven scientists to search for safe, natural preservatives. They have turned their attention to a part of the cashew nut (腰果) that is often thrown away — the shell. From it, they extract Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) and find that it contains special natural substances that can fight bacteria and prevent spoilage (变质). While this dark liquid has been studied for use in industries like paint and medicine, its potential for preserving food had not been fully explored until now.
The scientists designed a careful experiment to test whether CNSL could help preserve beef, one of the most widely consumed meats globally. They applied the liquid to beef samples at different concentrations. Some meat was left untreated as controls. The samples were then stored under different conditions — some at room temperature and others in refrigeration — for two weeks.
During storage, researchers tested the meat samples to count live bacteria and check common spoilage organisms. They also monitored changes in pH and moisture conditions, and tracked bacterial growth at room temperature. It was discovered that the CNSL-treated meat showed significantly less bacterial growth than untreated meat. The effect was strongest at higher concentrations, with a 2.0% solution providing excellent protection while maintaining meat quality. Even at room temperature, it effectively delayed the meat’s souring process and reduced bacteria growth, helping the beef stay fresh-looking longer.
The researchers note that further studies are needed to understand whether the liquid affects the taste and texture of the beef, and how it might be combined with modern packaging for even better results. Still, this study opens a window into nature’s own way of keeping food fresh — hidden inside a humble cashew shell.
32. Why are scientists studying cashew nut shells?
A. To reduce waste in the food industry.
B. To improve the taste of processed foods.
C. To find natural alternatives to artificial preservatives.
D. To develop new industrial materials for paint and medicine.
33. What was the primary focus of the microbiological evaluation?
A. The variety of cashew species. B. The safety of refrigerated beef.
C. The changes in pH and moisture conditions. D. The effectiveness of CNSL against bacteria.
34. What does the experiment suggest about CNSL?
A. It performs best at room temperature. B. It can improve meat quality over time.
C. It speeds up the meat’s souring process. D. Its concentration and the storage life are closely related.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of CNSL?
A. Unclear. B. Optimistic. C. Doubtful. D. Objective.

In recent years, a new travel trend has quietly arisen among busy students and young professionals: micro-travel. 36 This trend reflects a growing desire to balance modern life’s demands with meaningful experiences — all without breaking the bank or exhausting limited vacation days.
Several factors drive this trend. First, the fast-paced modern lifestyle leaves little time for long trips. Weekends become precious windows for relaxation. Second, micro-travel is budget-friendly. 37 Third, environmental awareness plays a role. Shorter distances mean lower carbon footprints, supporting eco-conscious values.
Technology also fuels the trend. Social media platforms like Xiaohongshu and Instagram are filled with micro-travel guides, showcasing picturesque spots and cultural activities nearby.
38 One high school student from Beijing shared online: “I used to think travel required grand plans, but last weekend, I visited a rooftop calligraphy exhibition in my city. It felt like a mini-vacation!”
What makes micro-travel special is its focus on cultural discovery. Many travelers use weekends to participate in local traditions. In Japan, for instance, young city dwellers might visit rural areas to join tea ceremonies or pottery workshops. In Italy, families often explore nearby villages during harvest festivals to taste regional dishes and learn ancient farming techniques. 39
40 Small towns and cultural sites gain visibility and economic support, which helps preserve heritage. For example, the revival of traditional dyeing workshops in Guizhou, China, owes much to weekend visitors interested in hands-on craft experiences. Meanwhile, travelers return home with fresh perspectives. A weekend spent exploring a local history museum might inspire a student’s essay or spark curiosity about global civilization.
A. The rise of micro-travel benefits both travelers and communities.
B. Most importantly, micro-travel offers a unique way to recharge mentally.
C. It could be a historic town, an art village, a local festival, or even a lesser-known museum.
D. Apps like TripAdvisor or local tourism websites make it easy to plan a 48-hour adventure.
E. With rising travel costs, short trips reduce expenses on transportation and accommodation.
F. These experiences create lasting memories and foster a deeper understanding of diverse cultures.
G. Unlike traditional vacations, micro-travel focuses on short, immersive weekend trips to nearby cultural destinations.

I knew I would have a beyond-busy summer, I would be a junior teacher for the Little Dragons Karate(空手道) Camp. And I had to do summer swim team. And Ollie and I already had two customers for our dog-walking business.
“You might be biting off more than you can chew,” my mom said with a warning glimpse when I talked to her about it and announced, “I want to do everything!”
“Don't worry.” I grinned, “I have strong teeth!”
My mom smiled back. “In this case, it's your organizational skills, not your teeth, that need to be strong.” I didn't take it to my heart.
And the first week really was no problem. My friend Ollie was out of town and karate camp hadn't started, so my swim stuff was all I needed to worry about. The next week was great too. I swam, and a Little Dragon at karate camp told me I was his favorite teacher ever!
I did learn, though, that staying organized with two activities was harder. My backpack was already stuffed with a towel and swim things, so I needed another for my karate clothing. Riding my bike from karate camp to the pool with two backpacks was a challenge. But I still had it under control until Ollie got back.
“We’re late getting our business together!” he said. “We’ll have to spend every spare minute preparing.”
“But I don't have any spare minutes!” I said.
“Did you forget we agreed to walk Alfie every Saturday? And Muffin on Tuesdays at 4:00?”Ollie asked. I couldn't let Ollie down, so I took out a third backpack and filled it with dog toys, treats, and plastic bags. I thought I was all set.
But I was wrong! It didn't take long for my dog-walking stuff and karate stuff and swim stuff to get all mixed up, forgotten, or lost. One day, I forgot my karate backpack and had to borrow Emma's extra outfit, which was too tight. The next day, I remembered my karate stuff but forgot my swimsuit, so I had to help out in the snack shop and stay out of the pool all afternoon. And another time, when I reached into my dog-walking pack for plastic bags, all I could find were swim goggles(护目镜) and sunscreen.
