Which part of the world has the most nearsighted (近视的) students? Just look around you - it’s East Asia. Nine in 10 school leavers in major East Asian cities are nearsighted, according to the BBC. Experts say books and video games are not to blame. East Asian students, they say, aren’t getting enough sunlight.
People become nearsighted because their eyeballs grow out of shape and light entering their eyes cannot focus (聚焦) correctly. The body can produce a chemical called dopamine (多巴胺) to stop eyeballs from changing shape. And guess what scientists have just discovered? Sunlight can help our bodies produce more dopamine, reported AFP.
According to the study, primary school students in Singapore spend only 30 minutes outdoors every day. But in Australia, kids spend three hours a day outside. As a result, fewer children in Australia are nearsighted—only 10 percent, compared with 90 percent in Singapore.
“Children in East Asia basically go to school... go home and stay inside. They study and they watch television,” Ian Morgan of the Australian National University told AFP.
But being a bookworm or a couch potato does not directly harm the eyes, added Morgan. “As long as they get outside, it doesn’t seem to matter how much study they do,” he explained. “There are some kids who study hard and get outside and play hard and they are generally fine. The ones who are at major risk are the ones who study hard and don’t get outside. As a result of huge educational pressures and the construction (构成) of a child’s day, the amount of time they spend outside in bright light is minimized.”
Experts suggest children should stay outside for two to three hours every day. This can include time spent in the playground and walking to and from school.
38.What can we conclude from Paragraph Two?
A.Dopamine is a chemical that causes eyeballs to grow out of shape.
B.Dopamine can stop light entering the eyes from focusing correctly.
C.Spending time in the sun helps increase levels of dopamine in the body.
D.The more dopamine a person has in their body, the better eyesight he or she has.
39.According to Morgan, what kind of people are most likely to suffer from nearsightedness?
A.Those who like watching TV. B.Those who take exercise regularly.
C.Those who study hard and play hard outdoors. D.Those who stay indoors studying all day.
40.The underlined word “minimized” in the passage probably means ________.
A.made better use of B.reduced as much as possible
C.taken little notice of D.paid much attention to
41.What’s the best title of this passage?
A.Eyes need to see the sun B.The most nearsighted students in the world
C.People become nearsighted D.Books and video games are not to blame

If you make a list of the world’s top ten most challenging jobs, chances are that being a teacher will not make the cut. But think about the discouraging task millions of educators face each day as they try to shape a group of often bad-tempered, wild kids into intelligent, well-rounded ones. That surely has to be the toughest job in the world, especially considering that there is no promotion or bonus awaiting them even if they are wildly successful!
What if these all-important educators disappear from our lives? That was what Project Ed and Participant Media’s Teach Campaign asked filmmakers of all ages to imagine in their recently-held competition. Entitled “A World Without Teachers”, its purpose was to inspire more young people to become teachers. However, the 62 amazing videos received also serve as a reminder of how horrible things would be if we didn’t have these selfless teachers guiding us through life. What was interesting is that even the youngest participants did not appear to be happy at the idea of not having anybody telling them what to do.
High-school student Wakefield reflected if art, as we know it today, would have been different without teachers. Would Monet have discovered his talent for impressionism(印象派)? Los Angeles-based Miles Horst, who won the $1000 prize for the best adult video imagines a world where teachers are replaced by a “brain box” in his fun lively video.
Youth category winner Marina Barham’s video shows a fact we all know but often forget. Teachers don’t just teach, they inspire—something that no electronic device, no matter how smart, can do! So the next time you think your teacher is being “mean” for trying to lead you in the right direction, imagine a life without him/her. We have a feeling it will not appear as rosy!
42.According to the first paragraph, we can learn that ________ .
A.teaching naughty kids is a very discouraging task
B.teachers have little influence on kids’ development
C.a successful teacher has the greatest chance to be promoted
D.being a teacher is one of the most challenging jobs in the world
43.The project “A World Without Teachers” aims ________ .
A.to attract kids to hand in more videos of their teachers
B.to encourage more young people to go into teaching career
C.to inspire teachers to devote themselves to their jobs
D.to remind students to appreciate teacher’ hard work
44.What can we infer from Wakefield’s reflection?
A.The significance of teachers. B.The bravery of teachers.
C.The impression of teachers. D.The happiness of teachers.
45.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 suggest?
A.Teaching is quite different from other jobs.
B.The future of teachers’ work appears inspiring.
C.A world without teachers will be unimaginable.
D.Many people attach more importance to teaching.

【答案】38.C 39.D 40.B 41.A
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要分析了青少年近视率高的原因,指出阳光不足导致多巴胺分泌少是关键因素,并通过研究数据对比和专家建议,强调户外活动对保护视力的重要性。
【详解】38.第二段提到“The body can produce a chemical called dopamine to stop eyeballs from changing shape.”以及“Sunlight can help our bodies produce more dopamine”,由此可得出晒太阳有助于提升体内多巴胺水平。
39.第五段Ian Morgan提出“The ones who are at major risk are the ones who study hard and don’t get outside”,指整天待在室内学习的人最容易近视。
40.第五段画线词所在句“the amount of time they spend outside in bright light is minimized”,结合前文学业压力大、孩子大多待在家,可知孩子在户外强光下的时间被尽可能缩减。
41.通读全文可知,文章主要讲述了阳光对预防近视的作用,并建议孩子多待在户外见到阳光。因此文章的最佳标题是“眼睛需要看到太阳”。

【答案】42.D 43.B 44.A 45.C
【导语】本文为议论文。作者通过论证表明:世界上不能没有老师。文章强调了老师的重要性。

44.主旨大意题。本文的主题词为teacher,第三段通过分析事例,列举反例描述了教师的重要性。故选A。
45.词句猜测题。由最后一段中的“Teachers don’t just teach, they inspire… imagine a life without him/her.”可知,老师不仅仅是在教授知识,他们还能激发,所以下次你觉得你的老师为了引导你走向正确的方向,而变得”刻薄”的时候,想象一下没有他/她的生活。故选C。
