The traditional Chinese solar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. End of Heat (Chushu, 处暑) is the 14th solar term. It usually comes between August 22nd and 24th. Its name means the end of hot summer heat.
After End of Heat, most parts of China become cooler. Daytime is still warm, but nights turn cool. The temperature difference between day and night becomes bigger. However, in South China, “autumn tigers” often come. People still have hot weather for some days, so autumn arrives late there.
There is an old saying: “People feel sleepy in spring, doze in summer and feel tired in autumn.” Many people feel tired in End of Heat. This is called “autumn weariness”. It comes because our bodies use lots of energy in hot summer. To fight it, we need enough sleep, take more exercise and keep some plants indoors.
End of Heat is also a busy harvest time for farmers. Crops get ripe. People have special customs. Eating duck is popular, for duck has a “cool” nature in traditional Chinese medicine. People also set off river lanterns. They wish for good luck and remember their family members who passed away.
The 24 solar terms show ancient Chinese people’s wisdom of observing nature. They still guide our life today.
4. When does End of Heat usually come? ________
A. Between August 12th and 14th.
B. Between August 22nd and 24th.

5. Which of the following is TRUE about End of Heat? ________
A. All parts of China turn cool right after End of Heat.
B. Duck is popular to eat because of its “cool” nature in traditional Chinese medicine.
C. The temperature difference between day and night becomes smaller after End of Heat.
6. What does the underlined phrase “autumn weariness” mean in Paragraph 3? ________
A. 秋乏 B. 秋收 C. 秋凉

Zhang Xue (张雪), a name now known worldwide, was once a poor teenager from a village in Hunan. At the age of 14, he had to stop going to school and became a helper in a motorcycle repair shop. In others’ eyes those old motorcycles were “pieces of junk”, but in his eyes, they were a stepping stone to his dream.
At the age of 16, Zhang Xue became crazy about motorcycle racing. In order to get noticed by a racing team, he made lots of efforts. He called the TV station many times. To get that chance, he rode his old motorcycle again and again, falling in the mud (泥沼). The TV crew (采访团队) lost patience, but Zhang Xue didn’t give up. Once, to meet a racing team, he rode over 100 kilometers in the rain. His clothes got all wet, and his face turned red from the cold. Still, he tried his best to show his riding skills. When people speak of Wang Hong, they often mention the Fields Medal (菲尔兹奖). However, the most valuable part of her story for students lies in her spirit when facing difficult questions.
When she was a child, Wang had a serious burn and had to stay indoors for a long time. She couldn’t play freely outside, so books and maths problems filled her quiet world. This experience helped her develop patience and learn to work alone. Later, this ability let her spend days thinking over hard problems without rushing to get answers.
At school, Wang thought actively but was once laughed at for raising her hand often. Her teacher helped her balance courage and careful listening. She joined a problem-solving group. The group didn’t offer ready-made answers. It forced her to explain why an idea worked, where it might fail and how to improve it in other ways.
University brought new challenges. At first, Wang failed to get into her dream maths major (专业). With competitive classmates around her, she doubted herself, but she never gave up her love for maths. She kept reading maths books and doing more exercises. She also discussed hard problems with her teachers and classmates whenever she met trouble. She tried different courses and finally transferred (转入) to the School of Maths. When studying in France, she put aside her maths research for a short time to explore art and architecture (建筑). She did this to find out whether she truly wanted to return to maths.
Wang Hong’s success tells us that hard work and continuous effort matter a lot. If we keep trying and never give up, we will make progress in our studies.

第四部分 综合技能(共两节,满分25分)
第一节 阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
