A small Italian island has a big problem, and it needs your help.
The island of Alicudi is in the north of Sicily. There are 600 goats on Alicudi. That’s six times the number of people who live on the island. Now it’s looking for people to adopt (收养) the goats on the island. But if you want one, you’ll have to catch it yourself!
The island’s mayor, Riccardo Gullo, said if you have a boat to get a goat off the island, and if you can catch one, you can keep it!
The number of goats on Alicudi has increased significantly in the last few years, and they’ve been causing problems. People have said the animals have been breaking walls, ▲ and even paying unwelcome visits to people’s homes.
No one owns the goats. They are thought to be brought to the island by a farmer 20 years ago. Tourists like to take pictures with the animals, and Gullo does want some of the goats to stay for that reason — but the number now is just too large.
To solve the problem, Mayor Riccardo Gullo created an “adopt a goat” program open to just about anyone who will take some goats away from the island. The program allows people to apply (申请) for up to 50 goats, so long as they hand in their application and pay $17. If accepted, they will have 15 days to catch the goats and take them home. Gullo has said he will continue the program until all but about 100 goats are gone.
He said he’d prefer people to take the goats and look after them rather than eat them. But he also said he won’t be checking the plans of anyone who wants to take any of the animals away.
29. What problem does the island of Alicudi face?

①Pay $17. ②Catch them within 15 days. ③Send an email to Gullo himself.
④Offer your plan to Gullo on time. ⑤Hand in your application.
A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ①②⑤ D. ③④⑤
32. What can we learn from the passage?

This year marks the 81st anniversary (周年纪念) of the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Many works about this history are being shown, like films, plays and dances. Among them, the movie Dead To Rights (南京照相馆) has caught a lot of attention.
Directed by Shen Ao, the film is based on real photos that show the terrible things Japanese soldiers did during the Nanjing Massacre (大屠杀). The story happens when Japanese soldiers took control of Nanjing. To stay alive, a group of Chinese people hide inside a photo studio.
To survive, they have to help a Japanese army photographer develop his pictures. But while doing this, they discover something shocking. These photos clearly show the crimes (罪行) Japanese soldiers committed (犯罪) all over the city. The group decides they must let the world know the truth. So they secretly keep the films and risk their lives to get them out safely.
The story in the movie is connected to a real person. In 1938, a 15-year-old boy named Luo Jin worked in Huadong Photo Studio in Nanjing. Brave and clever, he secretly made over 30 copies of photos showing Japanese crimes. He put 16 photos into a book and drew a red heart with blood and the Chinese word “Chi” (which means “shame”) on the cover. Later, a young man named Wu Xuan kept the book safe. After eight years, the photos became strong proof (证据) of the crimes and were shown to the world.
Director Shen Ao said the reason why he made the film is that few people know how these important photos were saved. Dead To Rights is not only a movie, but also helps us remember painful history so that we work harder to make our country stronger.
33. What is the movie Dead To Rights based on?
A. Stories told by tourists in Nanjing.
B. A play about a Chinese photo studio.
C. A novel written by a Japanese soldier.
D. Real photos of Japanese crimes in Nanjing.
34. What can be inferred about Luo Jin from the passage?
A. He was afraid to keep the photos.
B. He worked for Wu Xuan in 1938.
C. He tried to let the world know the truth.
D. He drew a red heart on all the 30 photos.
35. Why did Shen Ao make the film?
A. To explain why few people like history.
B. To tell the story of Luo Jin and Wu Xuan.
C. To introduce the city of Nanjing to tourists.
D. To show how the important photos were protected.
36. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. A film brings a true history of saved photos to public attention.
B. Japanese soldiers took many photos during the war.
C. Luo Jin and Wu Xuan were both film directors.
D. Nanjing Massacre happened 80 years ago.
D
Free time is rare in modern life. Just look around you. Aren’t the adults all busy with something? But why is that?
Imagine yourself as a busy office worker. Now, you have a set of technology (技术). It could make every part of your job easier. What would you do with all that extra time? Well, you would probably work the same number of hours as before, or even more. You doubt about this, don’t you? But in fact, something similar happened in the U.S. in the 20th century — not in factories or offices, but in homes.
American homes in the early 1900s weren’t much different from those in the 1500s. There was no electricity (电). Most families had no water pipes (水管). Family members had to carry every drop of water in and out of the house.
Over the following years, many new appliances (家用电器) were made to save people’s time. Modern toilets, fridges and washing machines made their way into more and more homes. However, none of them saved hours of work. In the 1920s, full-time housewives spent 51 hours a week doing housework. In the 1960s, they were working 53 hours.
This may seem surprising, but the reasons are simple. Better technology leads to higher expectations, and higher expectations create more work. For example, before modern technology, most people washed their clothes only twice a year. Bad smell was common. Washing machines changed that. People began washing their clothes more often. And because it was easier to wash the clothes, people bought more shirts and dresses. As a result, housewives found themselves washing and drying more clothes.
Technology has cut down the time it takes to cook a meal or wash a shirt. But it has also saved time for other housework, especially childcare. Since the 1980s, American parents have nearly doubled the number of hours they spend raising, teaching and driving their kids around town.
Most of us can make our lives easier with modern technology. But instead of enjoying more rest time, we often find ourselves working more towards a better life. Without big changes in society’s expectations, people will take on more work and never feel like enough.
37. What happened to full-time housewives’ housework time from the 1920s to the 1960s?
A. It fell a lot. B. It stayed the same.
C. It doubled quickly. D. It rose a little.
38. The underlined word “that” in Paragraph 5 refers to (指) “__________”.
A. people seldom washing their clothes
B. people buying more shirts and dresses
C. people spending much time washing clothes
D. housewives washing all of the family’s clothes
39. What can we learn about American parents since the 1980s?
A. They spend more time on their work.
B. They have less childcare and housework.
C. They work fewer hours and feel more relaxed.
D. They nearly doubled time raising and teaching kids.
40. What’s the best title of this article?
A. More work, less rest? B. Better work, more free time?
C. More technology, less work? D. Better technology, a better life?

In May 2026, Chinese astronauts (宇航员) on Tiangong Space Station successfully grew tomato plants in the space greenhouse. This marks another important step for China’s space-plant-growing research.
The experiment began in February 2026. Astronauts planted tomato seeds in special nutrient liquid (营养液). To help the seeds grow well, astronauts checked temperature and light conditions inside the greenhouse every single day. The first small shoots came out within 9 days, two days quicker than the same type of tomatoes grown on Earth.
During the following months, astronauts carefully looked after these plants. They controlled plant height and collected information about plant growth, leaf condition and nutrient intake. In late May, these tomato plants produced fruits, which were collected and brought back to Earth.
Space-research scientists say this experiment helps them develop new types of crops. “If we can grow fresh vegetables in space, astronauts can stay in space for much longer without depending totally on supplies sent from Earth,” said the leading researcher. The team also hopes this technology can help improve crop output in poor-soil areas on Earth.

A. The island is too far away from Sicily.

①Pay $17. ②Catch them within 15 days. ③Send an email to Gullo himself.
④Offer your plan to Gullo on time. ⑤Hand in your application.
A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ①②⑤ D. ③④⑤

【答案】37. D 38. A 39. D 40. C

I am outgoing and always ready to help others, but I used to be too careless to do things well. Last term, I took part in the school relay race. I fell over and made our team lose the prize simply because I failed to watch my step. Instead of feeling upset all day, I kept practising after class, focusing carefully on every small move.
