① What do young people like to do in their free time? If you think they are all playing video games or watching short videos on their phones, you might be wrong. In 2026, many young people are turning to something quite different — “grandma hobbies.”
② “Grandma hobbies” is a fun name for traditional activities like needlepoint (刺绣) and gardening. These are things that people’s grandmothers used to enjoy. But now, Gen Z (people born after 1997) are falling in love with them.
③ Emma MacTaggart, 26, from the US, is a good example. She used to work long hours in banking. After work, she would just look through her phone for hours — a habit called “getting lost in her phone.” To change this, she and her roommates decided to try needlepoint. Soon, they became completely attracted. Emma said it was so relaxing that they spent almost all their free time making needlepoint works instead of looking at a screen.
④These old hobbies help young people reduce stress and feel relaxed. When they finish a gift or a dish, they feel proud and successful. Social media helps them become more popular. Young people share their works online and make friends. Some even turn their hobbies into businesses. Take Anna Weare as an example, a 31-year-old blacksmith (铁匠) — people now wait a year for her handmade products.
⑤So next time you see a young person blacksmithing, don’t be surprised. It’s the newest cool thing to do!

C. Video games are the most popular free-time activity for Gen Z.

My Growing-Up Journey
Everyone has a growing-up journey. Mine is full of changes, challenges and happiness. I used to be a little boy who was afraid of everything. I depended on my parents for food, clothes and even study. I was too shy to make friends and always stayed alone. I thought growing up was a terrible thing, because it meant I had to take more responsibility.
When I was 13 years old, my parents sent me to a boarding school. At first, I was very sad and lonely. I couldn’t take care of myself. I didn’t know how to wash my clothes or make my bed. I even cried every night. But my teacher and roommates helped me a lot. They taught me how to do housework and encouraged me to make friends.
With their help, I slowly changed. I learned to take care of myself and became more independent. I made many good friends and started to enjoy my school life. I also developed a good habit of studying hard. I realized that growing up is not terrible. It is a process of learning and changing. It means being independent, responsible and brave.
Last year, I took part in a speech competition. I was very nervous, but I tried my best. Although I didn’t win the first prize, I gained confidence. This experience taught me that growing up means facing challenges bravely and never giving up.
Now I am 14 years old. I am no longer the little boy who was afraid of everything. I am independent, responsible and brave. I know that my growing-up journey is still going on. I will keep working hard and face every challenge with a smile. I believe that I will grow into a better person.

People cannot really control their sneezes. If something starts tickling the inside of our nose, our brain takes over. ____32____ So it sends a message to the body to get it out.
When we sneeze, many things happen in a very short time. Usually, our eyes shut, our tongue presses against the top of our mouth, and the muscles in our stomach and chest get tight. Next, there is a sudden blast of air coming out of our lungs and then our nose. ____33____
Some unusual things can also make us sneeze. For example, some people sneeze when they look at a bright light. ____34____ If they are allergic to certain plants, they might sneeze a lot in the seasons when the plants bloom, but not in others. B. Sneezing is one way that diseases spread.
C. It knows that something inside the nose should not be there.
D. If people have an allergy, certain plants or animals might also make them sneeze.

____37____ It doesn’t mean you need to stop your work for a whole day. You can just take a short break of 5 to 10 minutes. Stand up, walk around or look outside the window. These simple actions can refresh your brain quickly.
Hobbies are another great way to relax. ____38____ They can help you forget your work for a while and bring you pleasure. You can choose reading, listening to music or doing sports in your free time.
It’s also wise to draw a line between work and free time. ____39____ Once your work time is over, try to put your work aside. Don’t keep thinking about your tasks all day. On November 26, 2025, a terrible fire broke out (爆发) in Hung Fuk Court, Hong Kong. The fire started from the outside of the buildings and spread very fast. Easy-to-burn materials made the fire get bigger quickly. This fire caused great losses. Many people were hurt, and some even lost their lives. Firefighters worked hard to put out the fire and save people. This unexpected event tells us that fire safety is very important for everyone.
To keep safe from fires, we should do well in daily prevention (预防) first. Don’t put easy-to-burn things like old clothes or paper boxes on balconies or stairs, as they can easily catch fire. Remember to turn off electrical tools such as phone chargers (充电器) and lights when you don’t use them.
If a fire really happens, stay calm and don’t panic. Cover your mouth and nose with a wet towel to keep smoke out, and use stairs instead of lifts because lifts may get stuck during a fire. If you can’t run away, go to a room with a window. First close the door tightly and fill gaps (缝隙) with wet cloth. Then wave bright clothes at the window to ask for help. Also, it’s necessary to remember the fire exit routes (路线) of your home or school and take fire drills (消防演练) seriously.
