What do you think will happen if you draw a picture with crayons and cover up that picture with paint? Now follow the steps below to find out the answer.
What you need
* crayons of different colors * drawing paper * blue poster paint
*a small bowl *a cup filled with water *a paintbrush
How to do it
Step 1 Think about a scene under the sea with different-coloured fish and sea plants. And then draw the fish and sea plants with your crayons. The more colors you use, the better your picture will be.
Step 2 Pour a little blue paint into the bowl. Add a bit of water and stir (搅拌) to make your paint a little thinner.
Step 3 Dip your brush into the blue paint in the bowl. Cover your whole picture with the blue paint. What happens? You have sea plants and animals living in a blue sea!
Why it happens
Your crayons are made of wax (蜡). Wax resists, or stays away from the paint. That’s why it does not cover the picture. So your sea plants and fish are still there.
31. Which tool is needed for Step 1?
A. A paintbrush B. Different crayons. C.A small bowl. D. Some blue paint.
32. Which picture shows what you do in Step 2?

Most people believe paintings are made to show beautiful scenes or real people. We expect artists to create works that look like what we see in the world. However, some artists create paintings with a different goal. They make art to play tricks on our eyes. This kind of art is called Op Art, short for Optical Art.
Op Art uses simple shapes, lines and strong colour contrasts. The artists do not paint mountains, animals or people. Instead, they use repeated patterns to create visual illusions. When we look at these paintings, our eyes and brain may feel as if the flat painting surface is moving. Even though the canvas stays still, the lines seem to shake or wave. They make our brains work harder to understand what we are watching.
Artists of Op Art spend plenty of time planning every line carefully. They do not depend on sudden inspiration. They use basic rules of how human eyes receive light. Small changes in line thickness or colour can lead to quite different visual effects. Some famous Op Art works were so surprising that they became popular worldwide in the 1960s.
Op Art is more than just fun visual games. It connects art with the science of human sight. It encourages viewers to think about how our eyes and brain work together. In this way, this special art form opens a new way for people to enjoy art.
34. What can we infer from Paragraph 1?
A. Most artists prefer to paint real scenes and people.
B. Op Art works are painted for the same purpose as common paintings.
C. Not all paintings are created to show things we can see in real life.
D. It is difficult for most people to understand the beauty of paintings.
35. What does the underlined word “They” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The artists. B. Repeated patterns. C. The viewers. D. The canvas.
36. Which of the following is TRUE about Op Art?
A. Artists usually paint natural scenery in Op Art works.
B. The paintings can really move because of special paints.
C. Artists design lines and colours to create visual tricks.
D. It became unpopular soon after it first appeared.
37. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Different Kinds of Traditional Paintings
B. Op Art: Art That Plays Tricks on Our Eyes
C. Rules of Colours Used in Modern Paintings
D. How Our Brains Receive Light and Signals
C
Do you sometimes feel too afraid to try new things? If you want to grow and get better, you need to take risks and challenge yourself. But your brain often tells you to stay safe. It might say, “Don’t bother trying something new.” Even when these thoughts aren’t reasonable, our anxiety (担心) can still win. Instead of thinking about the good things that could happen, we worry more about “What if something goes wrong?”
Avoiding all risks might seem smart, but it can make you feel unhappy. The problem is that we often make decisions based on feelings, not facts. We think, “The more scared I feel, the riskier it is.” But feelings aren’t always reasonable. If we knew how to think about risks clearly, we’d know which risks are worth taking. For example, trying a new hobby like painting might feel scary at first, but it could bring you joy and new skills.
Whether you’re afraid to change your job or too nervous to ask a friend for coffee, learning to take “good risks” can improve your life. Here are good ways to help.
Balance feelings with facts. Many times, we think fear means something risky. But that’s not true. For example, driving a car feels safe because we do it every day, but giving a speech in public might make your heart beat fast. Yet the fact shows that car accidents are much more common than getting hurt while speaking! So before you avoid doing something scary, take three deep breaths and ask yourself, “What’s the real risk here?”
Take steps to succeed. You can do many small things to lower risks. If you’re nervous about a test, make a study plan and review each day — this helps you feel more prepared. It’s okay to feel butterflies in your stomach when you try something new. Facing fear helps build your mental muscle, just like exercising builds physical muscle. So, taking smart risks helps you become mentally stronger. Each time you try something scary, you will learn to deal with uncertainty and anxiety. You’ll also get new skills and grow from mistakes. If you try out for a dance team and don’t make it, you can ask for the reason and then practise more. With practice, you’ll get better at facing risks, and your chances of success will rise.
38. Which of the following is TRUE according to the first two paragraphs?
A. Avoiding risks is a smart way to stay happy.
B. Taking risks requires us to trust our feelings.
C. Our brain often tells us to face challenges bravely.
D. Our feelings often influence us to make decisions.
39. What does the underlined phrase “build your mental muscle” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Develop strength in your mind. B. Exercise your body to stay healthy.
C. Think mainly about cheerful things. D. Avoid situations that make you afraid.
40. What is the structure of this passage? (①=Paragraph 1, ②=Paragraph 2…)
A. B. C. D.
41. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Practising more can help deal with risks better.
B. Trying many small things can reduce risks.
C. Learning clearly about real risks can help a lot.
D. Taking smart risks can push us forward.

Fifteen years had passed since Silas Marner fled his hometown after being falsely accused of stealing money from the church. Having lost his reputation, his closest friend and the woman he planned to marry, he was deeply wounded by the unfair judgement. Shutting himself away from all human connection, he settled in the quiet village of Raveloe, where he earned his living by weaving cloth from dawn till dusk.
Gold gradually became his only comfort. Every night, he would take out his coins and count them slowly, touching their smooth surfaces. Unlike people, these silent pieces of metal would never cheat or betray him. He hid them carefully under the floor of his small cottage. Day after day, he wove and saved, caring for nothing but his growing pile of gold. He rarely spoke to neighbors and avoided any social contact. To the villagers, he was merely a strange, lonely weaver with no interest in others.
One cold winter night, Silas returned home after a long day’s work. To his great shock, the hiding place under the floor was empty. All his gold had been stolen. He searched every corner of the cottage repeatedly, yet found no trace of the thief. His world fell apart, for those coins had been the only reason he kept going for years. Without them, he felt hopeless and empty. He rushed into the village to report his loss, yet nobody could discover who had taken his treasure.
A few days later, on New Year’s Eve, Silas sat sadly by his burning fire, too tired to think about the stolen gold. Unexpectedly, a small golden-haired child wandered into his warm cottage. The little girl’s mother had fallen unconscious and died in the heavy snow outside. Attracted by the bright firelight, the child moved forward and fell asleep quietly beside Silas’s feet.
Silas stared at the child in surprise. At first, he could hardly make sense of what had happened. As he looked at ner soft face, something long buried inside him began to wake up. He had no experience of raising a child, yet he could not bring himself to send her away.
Gradually, this little girl, whom he named Eppie, changed his whole life. He learned to care for another being, to talk freely and to rebuild connections with the villagers. He stopped valuing gold above everything else. Slowly, the pain from his unfair past faded away. He came to realize that true treasure was not the coins locked underground, but the love and warmth shared with another soul.
42. Why did Silas regard gold coins as his only comfort?
A. He planned to buy a larger cottage with his gold.
B. He did not trust people after suffering unfair treatment.
C. The villagers respected anyone who owned plenty of gold.
D. He dreamed of becoming the richest person in Raveloe.
43. What does the underlined sentence “something long buried inside him began to wake up” suggest?
A. His anger towards those who hurt him returned and grew stronger.
B. His hidden wish to find the thief of his gold finally came alive.
C. His long-lost ability to love and care for others returned to him.
D. His old skill of weaving cloth became active once again.
44. Which of the following is the correct order of events in the story?
a. Silas’s gold coins were stolen from his cottage.
b. Silas was wrongly charged with theft and left his hometown.
c. The little girl Eppie wandered into Silas’s cottage.
d. Silas earned money by weaving and saved gold coins.
e. Silas realized love was more valuable than material wealth.
A. d-b-c-a-e B. b-a-d-c-e C. d-b-a-e-c D. b-d-a-c-e
45. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Silas caught the thief and got all his gold back in the end.
B. The arrival of Eppie helped Silas heal his deep inner wound.
C. Silas accepted the villagers’ friendship the moment he moved to Raveloe.
D. Silas still believed money was the most important thing in life.

Being busy often seems important in today’s world. Busy plans, nonstop messages and long task lists make people feel they are making progress all the time. However, many people feel tired after a whole day and wonder why their big goals are still far away. Actually, being busy is different from being effective: One fills time and the other creates results.
Being busy gives people a false feeling of success because it only fills time with activities. Answering emails, joining meetings and finishing small tasks make people think they are making progress. However, these activities often have no real purpose and cannot help them move closer to their important goals. What’s more, busy people often let outside tasks take over their time. This brings them stress and stops them from making much progress.
However, being effective is judged by results, not activities. Instead of asking how many things they have done, effective people ask what they have achieved. They put important tasks first, even if these tasks need more focus and effort. For example, they decide early what is worth their energy and save time for important work. This good plan cuts down useless tasks and leaves time for deep and careful work.
The real problem of being busy is not the time spent, but the lost progress. Being busy often hides the truth that people get little valuable things. On the other hand, effective people often stop working for a short time to check if they are keeping to their goals. When you stop judging your days by how busy you are and start judging them by real progress, your work will be more useful and you will feel more satisfied.
74. What is the difference between being busy and being effective?
75. What results will busy people have if outside tasks take over their time? (No more than 15 words)
76. What will you do to become an effective student? (List two points.)
