Su Shi, also known as Su Dongpo, was a famous poet who lived from 1037 to 1101. Here’s one of his stories.
Su Shi was very clever from a young age. With the help of his father, who was also a famous writer, Su Shi read many books and asked questions all the time. He worked hard and soon became much better at writing. People thought highly of him. Because of this, he became proud of himself. One day, he wrote a couplet (联) and put it on his door:
Know all the words in the world
Read all the books on the earth
An old man saw it and thought, “This boy is too proud.” Two days later, the old man came to Su Shi’s home with a book. He told Su Shi that he could not understand some words and needed help.
Full of confidence, Su Shi took the book from the old man’s hand. But when he opened it, he found many words he did not know. His face turned red and he felt ashamed. At that moment, he realized there was much more to learn.
The old man looked at him and smiled, saying, “Didn’t you say you knew all the words in the world?” Then he took the book and left.
After watching the old man leave, Su Shi thought for a long time. He realized how little he really knew. He quickly took out his brush and ink (墨水) and added some words to the couplet:
Work hard to know all the words in the world
Study well to read all the books on the earth
From then on, he worked even harder than before. Su Shi became a great poet, writer, and leader. He helped build dams (水坝) to control floods and wrote poems that people still love today.

For thousands of years, Earth’s oceans had remained nearly unchanged. But about 100 years ago, sea levels started to rise. Since then, scientists have tried to measure this change. Now, a new study shows that they’ve made a mistake because sea levels are higher than they thought.
The researchers in the study examined hundreds of reports about sea levels. They found that in most reports, sea levels were about 30 cm lower than they actually were. Because of this, people did not fully understand the danger. Today, more people are at risk of flooding, especially in places like Southeast Asia.
Katharina Seeger from the University of Padua in Italy is a lead researcher in the study. She explained why earlier studies were not accurate. Many scientists used guesses instead of real measurements. They also did not fully consider the effects of currents (洋流) and waves on sea levels. Because of these problems, they started from the wrong point and got wrong results.
Seeger said there’s no doubt that sea levels are rising. But to understand the danger, scientists need to know how much land is below sea level. “We underestimated (低估) the number of people living at risk near the coast,” Seeger said. “The new study shows that 77 to 132 million more people may face risks from rising sea levels.”
There is still a lot to learn about sea levels. Seeger believes young people can help in the future. She encourages them to stay curious and keep asking questions.
36. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. The danger of big floods. B. The review on old reports.
C. The underestimation of sea-level rise. D. The flooding in Southeast Asia
37. Which word is closest in meaning to “accurate” in Paragraph 3?
A. safe. B. useful C. simple. D. correct.
38. What do the numbers in Paragraph 4 show?
A. Sea levels are rising faster.
B. Ocean changes are under control.
C. Many more people may be at risk.
D. Scientists have solved the sea level problem.
39. Why did the earlier studies get wrong results?
A. Because they didn’t read enough science books.
B. Because they used guesses and ignored some influences.
C. Because they only studied the oceans in Europe.
D. Because they thought sea levels would stop rising soon.
40. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Sea Levels Higher Than Expected
B. How to Protect Cities by the Sea
C. The History of Ocean Changes
D. Ways to measure Sea Levels

A. The danger of big floods. B. The review on old reports.

【答案】范文
Some changes in my life
How time flies! I’m already in my third year of junior high school. Looking back at the past two years, I find my life has changed in many aspects.
For example, the way I get to school is different. I used to take the bus to school, but now I ride my bike. It’s faster and more convenient. More importantly, cycling keeps me fit and happy. My study habits have changed too. I used to leave my homework until the last minute. With the help of my teachers and parents, I’ve realized the importance of time management. Now, I make full use of my time and finish my schoolwork on time.
I’ve benefited a lot from them.
