Brazil is the largest exporter of soybeans, chicken and beef in the world. It is also a major producer of pork and corn. Brazil’s success is partly a result of low prices for farm land and permissive land-use policies.
Some farmers are leaving the Amazon, partly because of international concern about the rainforest. Many are moving to an area in the center of the country, known as the Cerrado.
The Cerrado is about the same size as Mexico. It is the largest flat, wooded grassland in South America. The area is also home to five percent of living species on Earth.
Over the past 10 years, Brazilian farmers have been developing large parts of the Cerrado. The area has lost more than 105,000 square kilometers of its native plant cover since 2008. That number represents 50 percent more land than the deforestation (采伐森林) seen during the same period in the Amazon. Based on relative size, the Cerrado is disappearing nearly four times faster than the rainforest.
The Cerrado is also rich in carbon dioxide gas. Studies have linked rising levels of carbon dioxide to rising temperatures in the Earth’s atmosphere. Many scientists blame the increase on deforestation and use of coal, oil and other fossil fuels.
Brazilian officials say protection of native plant life is important to meeting the country’s goals under the 2016 Paris Agreement on climate change. But scientists say industrial farming in the Cerrado could hold back Brazil’s efforts and worsen global warming. Liliana Pena Naval is an environmental engineering professor. She said that the removal of plants could cause bodies of water to disappear. Thousands of plants, fish, insects and animals are also affected. Many of these species are only beginning to be studied.
Farmers see the development of the Cerrado as necessary for Brazil’s food security and economic success. The agriculture industry grew 13 percent in 2017. The ability to keep producing new farmland at low costs has given Brazil better chances of success than other countries.
14.According to the text, the reason for the success of agriculture in Brazil is ____________.
A.large areas of rainforest B.good weather conditions
C.international concern D.reasonable land costs and policies
15.Which of the following about the Cerrado is not mentioned in the text?
A.Its location. B.Its area. C.Its population. D.Its species.
16.What’s Liliana Pena Naval’s attitude to the development of the Cerrado?
A.Uncaring. B.Favorable. C.Concerned. D.Humorous.
17.Where does the text probably come from?
A.An advertisement. B.A book about climate.
C.A biology book. D.A report about environmental protection.

When scientists look for an earthquake’s cause, their search often starts underground. As centuries of earthquake researches have made clear, it’s the crash of makeup plates and the movement of underground faults and cracks that mainly lead to an earthquake. But MIT scientists have now found that certain weather events may also play a role in setting off some quakes.
In a study appearing recently in Science Advances, the researchers report that happenings of heavy snowfall and rain likely led to a series of earthquakes over the past several years in northern Japan. The study is the first to show that climate conditions could cause some quakes.
“We see that snowfall and other environmental loading at the surface affect the stress state underground, and the timing of heavy rainfall events is well-connected with the start of this earthquake crowds,” says study author William Frank, an assistant professor in MIT’s Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences. “So, climate obviously has an effect on the response of the solid earth, and part of that response is earthquakes.”
The new study focuses on a series of ongoing earthquakes in Japan’s Noto Peninsula. The team discovered that earthquake activity in the area is surprisingly in step with certain changes in underground pressure, and that those changes are influenced by seasonal patterns of snowfall and rainfall. The scientists doubt that this new connection between quakes and climate may not be unique to Japan and could play a role in shaking up other parts of the world. Looking to the future, they predict that the climate’s influence on earthquakes could be more pronounced with global warming.
“If we’re going into a climate that’s changing, with more extreme rainfall events, and we expect a redistribution of water in the atmosphere, oceans, and continents, that will change how the Earth’s crust (地壳) is loaded,” Frank adds. “That will have an effect for sure, and it’s a connection we could further explore.”
18.What does the author intend to do in Paragraph 1?
A.Introduce the main topic. B.Describe a scientific experiment.
C.Present different opinions on earthquakes. D.Explain the causes of earthquakes in detail.
19.What is the finding of the study?
A.Quakes will grow in number. B.Global warming will bring more snow.
C.Heavy rains predict major quakes. D.Certain weather events may lead to some quakes.
20.What can we infer from the last two paragraphs?
A.The research results will be applied immediately.
B.The influence of climate on earthquakes will decrease.
C.There will be no earthquakes caused by underground faults.
D.More research on the climate-earthquake link will be conducted.
21.What is a suitable title for the text?
A.The Secret of Earthquakes. B.How to Predict Earthquakes.
C.Climate and Earthquakes: A New Link. D.The Effects of Global Warming on Earthquakes.
Trying new things and taking on challenges can make your brain sharper. 22 . Here are four more benefits of being an adventure seeker.
You will adapt to change more easily.
23 . They enjoy engaging with unfamiliar things, are naturally curious about the world, and creatively adapt to change instead of being fearful of it.
24 .
Participating in an adventurous physical activity can lead to higher levels of what experts call self-efficacy, or a belief in your abilities. Other types of adventure — running for public office, doing improv (即兴表演) at your local comedy club, or taking virtual singing lessons — build your confidence, too. The more you push past your comfort zone and feel proud of yourself for doing so, the more confident you’ll become.
You will feel more content with life.
Adventurous people tend to have stronger feelings of satisfaction about how they’re living their lives. “ 25 ,” says Frank Farley, a professor at Temple University. “That is because participating in something challenging is associated with pleasure — even when the activity itself is difficult, completing it brings joy.”
You will feel a sense of flow.
When you’re in the zone, meaning highly focused and engaged, everything else except what you’re concentrating on falls away, and a general sense of well-being takes over. This feel-good state is known as the flow, and research shows that participants in adventure sports are able to achieve it. If your brain is in the flow state, rhythmic spikes of dopamine, which is associated with engagement and pleasure, are likely to occur. 26 .
A.You will gain more confidence
B.They always have a sense of happiness
C.You will step out of your comfort zone
D.And that’s just one of the many things adventure does for you
E.Over time, adventurous activities may actually improve your health
F.Even better, those positive feelings can last beyond the activity itself
G.People who are drawn to thrill-seeking activities tend to accept uncertainty more easily

Everything changed when I entered high school. With 790 students in my freshman class, I felt completely lost, recognizing no one from middle school. Loneliness followed me home. My elder brother was busy with his future plans, and my popular sister was always surrounded by friends. They both seemed to fit in perfectly. “Why can’t I?” I wondered, entering the house after another difficult day.
Mom was there waiting for me. “Karole, your bedroom’s a disaster. Why can’t you keep it clean?”
The last thing I needed was criticism(批评) from my mother. Where was the mother who used to sit with me on the couch, reading stories and loving me unconditionally? I didn’t try to explain my feelings. It was easier to hide in my room with my bad mood, as I did every afternoon.
Clearing a space on my desk, I opened my math book—yet another thing I wasn’t good at anymore. My grades had been falling along with my confidence. I started working on the first problem but immediately made a mistake. “Wrong again! You can’t do anything right!” I tore the paper from my notebook, crumpled it, and threw it toward the wastebasket. It missed and landed on the floor, echoing my mother’s words in my mind.
By the time I finished my homework, the floor was littered with crumpled(起皱的) paper. Strangely, seeing this mess gave me a kind of satisfaction—it seemed to prove all my failures. I lifted the bedcover and kicked the papers under the bed. This became my secret habit. Each crumpled ball reminded me I was a failure, yet I hid my unhappiness as carefully as I hid those papers. Behind my mask of indifference, nobody knew my true feelings. Who would want to listen?
One day, I came home to an empty house. It was a relief not to be met with Mom’s latest complaint. Nothing I do is right in her eyes, I thought. Or anyone else’s, including mine.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
When I opened the door of my bedroom, I froze.

But MIT scientists have now found that certain weather events may also play a role in setting off some quakes.(科学家在探寻地震成因时,研究往往从地下开始。
根据第二段中的“The study is the first to show that climate conditions could cause some quakes.(该研究首次表明气候条件可能会引发部分地震。)”
根据最后一段中的“That will have an effect for sure, and it’s a connection we could further explore.(这必定会产生影响,而这一联系我们还可以进一步探究。)”
根据第一段“But MIT scientists have now found that certain weather events may also play a role in setting off some quakes.(但是麻省理工学院的科学家现已发现,某些天气事件也可能会引发部分地震)”可知,文章围绕新的科学发现,介绍气候天气与地震之间存在的关联,C项“Climate and Earthquakes: A New Link(气候与地震:一种新关联)”最贴合全文主旨,适合用作标题。
【答案】22.D 23.G 24.A 25.B 26.F
23.根据后文“They enjoy engaging with unfamiliar things, are naturally curious about the world, and creatively adapt to change instead of being fearful of it.(他们喜欢接触陌生的事物,天生对世界充满好奇,并且能够创造性地适应变化,而不是害怕改变)”以及标题“You will adapt to change more easily.(你将更容易适应变化)”可知,本段主旨是你会更容易适应变化,空后描述这类人的特点是乐于接触陌生事物、主动适应变化而非恐惧,G项“喜欢追求刺激活动的人往往更容易接受不确定性”契合段落主题,衔接后文。
24.根据后文“Participating in an adventurous physical activity can lead to higher levels of what experts call self-efficacy, or a belief in your abilities. Other types of adventure — running for public office, doing improv (即兴表演) at your local comedy club, or taking virtual singing lessons — build your confidence, too. The more you push past your comfort zone and feel proud of yourself for doing so, the more confident you’ll become.(参与充满挑战的体育活动可以提升专家所说的自我效能感,即对自己能力的信心。其他类型的冒险活动——比如竞选公职、在本地喜剧俱乐部进行即兴表演,或参加线上唱歌课程——同样有助于增强你的自信心。你越能突破舒适区,并为自己所取得的成就感到自豪,就越会变得自信)”可知,空处是本段小标题,本段内容讲述各类冒险活动能提升自我效能感、帮你建立自信,A项“你会获得更多自信”准确概括段落核心内容。
25.根据上文“Adventurous people tend to have stronger feelings of satisfaction about how they’re living their lives.(冒险的人往往对自己的生活状态感到更加满足)”以及后文“That is because participating in something challenging is associated with pleasure — even when the activity itself is difficult, completing it brings joy.(这是因为参与一项具有挑战性的活动会带来愉悦感——即使活动本身很困难,完成它也会让人感到快乐)”可知,前文提到爱冒险的人对生活的满足感更强,空后教授解释参与有挑战性的事哪怕过程艰难,完成后也会带来快乐,B项“他们总是有幸福感”呼应上下文关于满足、愉悦的表述。

Dear Eric,
I quite understand your annoyance. It is common for teenagers to get addicted to short-video apps during summer holidays, so don’t blame yourself too much.
Here are some practical suggestions for you. First, set a fixed time limit for your phone use to reduce screen time. Second, you can turn to schoolwork or outdoor activities to draw your attention away from videos. Besides, take small steps to refocus on your studies instead of pushing yourself too hard. Gradually, you will adapt to school life again.
Hope my advice will be of some help to you.
Yours,
Li Hua

When I opened the door of my bedroom, I froze. The messy floor that I’d hidden papers under every day was spotless— no crumpled balls, no scattered notebooks. My desk was neatly organized too, with my math book placed gently in the center. On the bed lay a folded stack of my favorite snacks and a small white envelope, which stood out against the clean sheets. My throat tightened suddenly; I’d never expected anyone to notice the mess I’d been hiding, let alone tidy it up so quietly.
I recognized Mom’s perfect handwriting on the note at once. “Karole, I saw every paper you hid. Each one didn’t mean you’re a failure, just that you’re trying. High school is hard, and it’s okay to feel lost. I’m sorry I didn’t ask how you felt earlier. Whenever you’re ready to talk, I’ll be on the couch.” Tears rolled down my cheeks. I walked to the living room, and Mom looked up with a soft smile. I sat beside her, finally letting go of the mask I’d worn for so long. That day, I realized I wasn’t alone after all.
