Two Chinese Mathematicians Make History at the 2026 Fields Medal Ceremony
Known as "the Nobel Prize of mathematics", the 2026 Fields Medals were announced on July 23 at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia. Four young scientists got this world's top prize for math.
Two winners, Deng Yu and Wang Hong, are Chinese and have caught great attention from media around the world. This is an important moment that has never happened before. For the first time, Chinese mathematicians won this award, ending Western countries' control of this famous prize for many years. Both finished their college studies at Peking University and then went abroad to continue their research.
Given by the International Mathematical Union every four years, the Fields Medal is only open to scientists under 40. Every winner gets two official prizes: a 14-karat gold medal with a picture of Archimedes and 15,000 Canadian dollars. The prize honors important new discoveries in different areas of mathematics.
Deng Yu works as a professor at the University of Chicago. He showed great talent in math when he was young. He won a gold medal in the International Mathematical Olympiad during high school and studied for his bachelor's degree at Peking University. His important research made great progress on a key problem in Hilbert's Sixth Problem. He created strict mathematical models to connect tiny molecular movements and large fluid motion, linking pure mathematics and physics.
At the same time, Wang Hong is 35, the youngest winner. She entered Peking University when she was 16. Now she is a Silver Professor at New York University's Courant Institute. She solved the three-dimensional Kakeya conjecture, a problem no one could work out for a hundred years. It sits at the crossing of harmonic analysis and geometric measure theory. She said her success came from teamwork. Her mathematical ideas help create new developments in cryptography and computer science.
The fact that they both studied at Peking University for college shows that China's basic mathematics education has made great progress. Their historic success broadens worldwide top-level mathematical research and encourages young people to study basic science subjects.
( ) 26. What can we know about the Fields Medal from Paragraph 3?
A. It is given to old and experienced math experts.
B. It rewards creative and valuable math research results.
C. Winners can only get money as their prize.
D. It is held once every five years.
( ) 27. What can we learn about Wang Hong's success?
A. She finished her research all by herself.
B. Her study at a foreign university was the only key to her success.
C. Teamwork played an important role in her achievement.
D. She solved the century-old problem when she was 16.
( ) 28. What can we infer from the two mathematicians' learning experiences?
A. Studying abroad is unnecessary for math learners.
B. Young people can only succeed by solving old math problems.
C. Math talent is the only secret of great researchers.
D. Basic college education in China can lay a solid foundation for top math research.
( ) 29. What influence will their achievements bring?
A. More teenagers may become interested in basic science study.
B. All difficult math problems will be solved soon.
C. China's math education will become perfect overnight.
D. Western math research will stop developing.
( ) 30. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The introduction of the famous Fields Medal in the math field.
B. Two Chinese mathematicians won the Fields Medal and its great meaning.
C. The different learning experiences of two top Chinese scientists.
D. The development of China's basic mathematics education.

On Monday, October 6th, I celebrated my first Mid-Autumn Festival here in China. Also 36 as the Moon or Mooncake Festival, this celebration starts on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. It was an unusual 37 as we don't have this celebration back in America.
A Chinese friend of 38 explained that it is very like America's Thanksgiving holiday, but it comes from different places. In Chinese culture, the moon is a traditional 39 of family get-together. During this festival, friends and families stay 40 to share mooncakes, the traditional food of the festival.
I have 41 several types of mooncakes as gifts during this mooncake season. The traditional ones have four egg yolks (蛋黄) inside, each standing for a phase (位相) of the moon, 42 the more special ones have beautifully stamped characters on the top.
I have tried several mooncake flavors, 43 the mixed nut kind. They remind me of pecan (山核桃) pie, which is probably the 44 flavor we have in America. My young boys really love mooncakes and interestingly enough, their 45 are the red bean and the ham ones. I think my boys will grow up being part Chinese, at least as far as their stomachs go.

Dear Ella,
How is everything going? Since I entered Grade 9, great changes have taken place in my study and daily life, and I'd love to share them with you.
In terms of my study, I used to be lazy and seldom paid extra attention to my lessons after class. But now I realize the importance of senior high school entrance examination, so I finish my homework more efficiently than before, and I even spend 20 minutes every day doing English reading to improve my language skills. Last month I got a surprising progress in my math test, which made me feel very proud. For my daily life, I used to spend most of my spare time playing computer games. But now I often play badminton with my classmates after class to relax myself and keep healthy. Besides, I no longer eat too much junk food as I did before, and my parents say I have become more responsible and hard-working.
The life of Grade 9 is busy but full of happiness. What about your recent life? I'm looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
