Think and share
Today’s class goals:
1. Express your opinions with clear reasons.
2. Learn to use object clauses to show your ideas.
Debate: Do we need to memorize things?
Think and say
Think about this question:
Is it still necessary to memorize things when they can be found online?
What is your opinion?
Affirmative side (正方):
We need to memorize things.
Negative side (反方):
We don’t need to memorize things.
There are two different opinions.

Opinion
Reason
We don’t need to memorize things.
We can spend saved time practicing more useful skills.
Too much memorization stops us from thinking independently.
Online information is always newer than the knowledge we memorize.
Discuss and list
Use examples and data to support your opinions.
We need to memorize things.
Memorizing things makes our thinking faster.
If we memorize basic knowledge, our thinking will become faster. For example, when we have memorized math formulas, we do not need to look them up all the time. We can solve problems quickly during tests.
Discuss and list
Use examples and data to support your opinions.
Good memory makes us communicate freely without checking the Internet.
A good memory helps us talk with others smoothly. When we give an English speech or chat with foreign friends, we cannot keep searching for words online. The vocabulary we have memorized lets us communicate freely right away.
We cannot search for information when our phones have no power or signal.
We may meet situations without mobile service. During school exams, we are not allowed to use phones. If our phone runs out of power outside, we cannot get online. In these moments, only knowledge stored in our brains can help us.
Discuss and list
Use examples and data to support your opinions.
We don’t need to memorize things.
We can spend saved time practicing more useful skills.
If we stop wasting hours on mechanical memorization, we will have plenty of free time. For example, instead of memorizing lots of facts, we can practice communication skills, learn to do experiments or develop creative abilities. These practical skills help us more in the future.
Discuss and list
Use examples and data to support your opinions.
Technologies like AI and search engines are faster and more accurate than human memory.
AI can work things out in less than a second. According to a research, we forget 50%~80% of information within 24 hours if we don’t review it.
Online information is always newer than the knowledge we memorize.
Knowledge changes and develops every day. We can easily find the latest research results and new reports on the Internet. It is much better to search
for new information than to stick to old knowledge kept in our mind.
Read and learn
Pay attention to the key structures and the useful expressions.
1. Show opinions:
◆ I think (that) we need to memorize things.
◆ I believe (that) memorization is still important. ◆ In my opinion, …
2. Give the reasons:
◆One reason is that …
◆Another point is that … ◆ For example, …
3. Oppose the ideas:
◆ I don’t agree. I think that … ◆ But what if we ...?
Have a debate
Have a debate on the question. Each student takes turns to speak.
We think we need to memorize things.
We cannot always use the Internet, such as during
exams. The knowledge we memorized helps us solve problems immediately.
z
We believe we don’t need to memorize things.
We can look up all kinds of information online anytime. Time saved from memorizing can be used to learn practical skills.
Have a debate
Have a debate on the question. Each student takes turns to speak.
I disagree with your idea.
Sometimes our phone has no signal and we can’t search online. Only our memory can help us at that moment.
I don’t think so. Online information keeps updating, but memorized knowledge may become outdated. It is better to learn how to search than to remember everything.
Can you talk about memories that are important to you?
Can you use object clauses to express your opinions?
What have you learnt about how memory works?
What methods have you learnt to improve your memory?
Reflecting
I think (that) we need to memorize things.
