Hiking Boots vs. Trail Runners: The Great Debate
Both hiking boots and trail runners will get you out on the trail, but where, when and how you hike may impact your choice.
New to hiking? Keeping yourself steady on trails while wearing a pack takes a while to master. The wide, thick bottoms on hiking boots will provide a stable base for every footfall.
What’s the ground like on your trail? Rough trails require stronger boots for both stability and the ability to stand up to wear and tear.
What’s your body type? You likely already have a sense of whether your body requires more support from your footwear in general. If it does, and you plan to add a heavy pack to your overall weight, a solid, stable hiking boot may be your best choice.
How fast will you be going? Lightweight trail runners make it easier to maintain a fast pace.

We all know what a literary critic is: a trained reader who examines and analyzes the texts of all kinds of writers. But what is a science critic? Wouldn’t that be a trained expert who investigates and sometimes assesses the assumptions and accomplishments of scientists? Of course, there are countless science writers, but I believe that Evelyn Fox Keller is one of our leading science critics: a brilliant professional who explores physics, molecular biology, and genetics from a deeply learned insider’s point of view.
Evelyn was guided in her youth by the famous nuclear physicist Leo Szilard and introduced to molecular biology by her older brother, Maury Fox. Along the way, she wrote, edited, or coedited more than 14 books and received honorary doctorates worldwide. And although her PhD is in theoretical physics, she has spent her career “border crossing,” as she puts it, moving with ease between disciplines, from physics to biology, from feminist theory to the history of science, all while raising a son and a daughter as a single mother.
In 1983, Evelyn published A Feeling for the Organism, a biography of the Nobel Prize-winning geneticist Barbara McClintock, in which she sought to differentiate McClintock’s approach to her field from that of more “reductionist” biologists. But she is perhaps best known in the feminist community for Reflections on Gender and Science, published in 1985. Through essays on Plato, Aristotle and modern science, she studied how people described nature and scientists. Nature was often presented as passive and female, while scientists were presented as active and male. “The same cultural tradition,” she wrote elsewhere, “that names rational and objective as male, and irrational and subjective as female, also, and simultaneously, names the scientific mind as male, and material nature as female.” It was this tradition that Evelyn has fought so hard to break down.
4. What does Evelyn’s role as a “science critic” involve?
A. Comparing the work of many leading scientists.
B. Explaining complex science to ordinary readers.
C. Examining scientific ideas with expert knowledge.
D. Applying scientific findings to practical problems.
5. What is characteristic of Evelyn’s academic work?
A. It centers on theoretical physics. B. It connects science with social issues.
C. It introduces the history of science. D. It draws on ideas from different fields.
6. What does the passage suggest about Evelyn?
A. She prefers practical research. B. She values independent thinking.
C. She follows established ideas. D. She seeks personal recognition.
7. Why does the author mention Evelyn’s two books?
A. To show her challenge to old ideas. B. To trace her changing interests.
C. To highlight her work across fields. D. To show her fame among feminists.

In the winter, you’re likely to reach for a woolly jumper to keep you warm when you’re cold. But a new project in Switzerland is using wool for the opposite reason — to keep glaciers cool in the summer.
According to Glacial Monitoring in Switzerland (Glamos), the country has lost a quarter of its ice mass in the last 10 years.
Researchers are looking for ways to help slow this down and have been using plastic covers in some areas on the Alps for years. While the sheets are partly used to help protect small sections of glaciers, it’s largely done for tourism. The plastic covers are currently used to reflect sunlight and reduce heat absorption, but they can shed man-made fibres and microplastics into the snow and ice.
Researchers wanted to see if there was a natural option like wool that can break down naturally and work just as well as the current method, which helps to reduce glacier melt by 50% to 70%.
Timothee Steiner from the Summit Foundation who led the project alongside the University of Lausanne said: “Wool’s a local material that’s undervalued. So our idea is to use this underutilized, wasted material to create a tool for protecting glaciers. We came all summer to measure the melting and the ice depth. We used two test versions, one thinner and one thicker — and the thicker test version is even slightly more effective.”
“In Switzerland, only 0.02% of glaciers are covered, which is practically nothing,” Timothee continued. “Therefore, thinking we can save glaciers by covering them with plastic covers is like putting a band-aid on a gaping wound that keeps getting bigger. The main focus should be on combating climate change to save our glaciers from the melting they are currently experiencing.”
8. What can be inferred about the use of plastic coverings?
A. They increase the amount of snowfall.
B. They are used mainly to protect wildlife.
C. They prevent summer melting completely.
D. Their benefits come with environmental costs.
9. What did the summer experiment show about the wool covers?
A. Thinner covers absorbed more heat.
B. Glacier protection promoted tourism.
C. Plastic sheets replaced abandoned wool.
D. Thicker local wool covers worked better.
10. What does the underlined word “underutilized” mean?
A. Not fully used. B. Partly damaged.
C. Greatly valued. D. Sourced from afar.
11. What would Timothee most likely support?
A. Producing wool to cover every glacier.
B. Addressing the causes of global warming.
C. Funding more plastic covers through tourism.
D. Relying on monitoring rather than emission cuts.
D
Procrastination (拖延症) is on the rise, posing a growing problem in modern life. “Procrastination isn’t just a matter of motivation or bad time management,” Cambridge’s Dr Itamar Shatz says. “These are unhelpful misconceptions. Procrastination is a tug-of-war between helpful elements of our drive to act and harmful elements of our drive to delay.”
Procrastination is an ancient human problem, but the increasing flood of digital distractions in our lives may be making the problem worse. Modern work also encourages procrastination because many tasks offer little immediate meaning or feedback. Now, we regularly have to do things with unclear future consequences, like filing tax forms.
For many people, procrastination bites at university. Leaving assignments and revision to the last minute leads to worse grades and sometimes outright failure. Procrastination has been found to cost employers an estimated $20,000 per employee per year in the US, from the roughly two hours per day that employees spend procrastinating on average.
Procrastination can cause serious harm to our emotional well-being and even physical health. This is partly because of the stress, shame, guilt and regret it generates, but also because it leads to unhealthy behaviors such as going to sleep too late, exercising too little, or postponing going to medical screenings.
Why do we procrastinate? We are naturally wired to try to increase the pleasure that we experience and decrease our pain, a phenomenon called the hedonic principle. This leads us to pursue activities that we hope will make us feel good and avoid ones that we worry will make us feel bad. We naturally focus on what’s immediately in front of us. When this immediacy principle combines with the hedonic principle, they push us to do whatever will make us feel better right now, instead of what will be better for us in the long term.
12. What does Shatz’s explanation suggest?
A. Action is better than careful planning.
B. Time management prevents most delays.
C. Motivation determines how well we work.
D. Procrastination involves opposing desires.
13. What does the $20,000 figure highlight?
A. Economic costs. B. Workplace pressure.
C. Salary differences. D. Employee productivity.
14. What makes procrastination hard to resist?
A. Heavy workloads. B. Unclear goals.
C. Immediate rewards. D. Limited choices.
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Procrastination in modern life. B. Modern work and its problems.
C. Pleasure and long-term interests. D. Digital distractions and their risks.

If you read about AI, you’ll often find a common belief: people who don’t want to use AI are simply afraid or don’t understand it. They may fear losing their jobs or changing the way they work. Or they may not understand the technology well enough to see its benefits. ____16____
But there are rational reasons why people may choose to do something themselves instead of using AI. Effort can have value of its own. Sometimes, putting in effort gives us something that greater efficiency cannot provide. We can see this in several areas of life.
____17____ If we want to fulfill our potential, we need to work hard to master things that matter to us. Making art, mastering an instrument, or becoming an expert can help us grow. Even if AI can create a picture quickly, someone who wants to become a painter still needs to develop their own skills.
Effort can show how much we care. For example, caring for someone during a difficult time can communicate deep love. ____18____
Effort can also be connected with how we see good behavior. We are often taught that working hard is a good quality, while being lazy is not. ____19____ So, choosing to do something ourselves may sometimes reflect our moral values, rather than a fear of new technology.
____20____ When people choose not to use AI, they may not be expressing fear or ignorance. They may simply be protecting things they value, such as personal growth, care for others, and the satisfaction of working hard.
A. Effort helps us develop ourselves.
B. Efficiency is just one thing to value among many.
C. These views make not using AI seem unreasonable.
D. This is why people should do important things by themselves.
E. The easier a task becomes, the more valuable its result will be.
F. We may feel that avoiding work goes against what we believe is right.
G. Using AI for a personal message may mean that some meaning is missing.

【答案】4. C 5. D 6. B 7. A
【解析】

【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“Wouldn’t that be a trained expert who investigates and sometimes assesses the assumptions and accomplishments of scientists? Of course, there are countless science writers, but I believe that Evelyn Fox Keller is one of our leading science critics: a brilliant professional who explores physics, molecular biology, and genetics from a deeply learned insider’s point of view.(这不正是一个经过训练的专家,专门调查并有时评估科学家们的假设与成就吗?当然,科学作家数不胜数,但我认为伊芙琳·福克斯·凯勒是我们最杰出的科学评论家之一:一位才华横溢的专业人士,以学识渊博的业内人士的视角深入探讨物理学、分子生物学和遗传学)”可知,伊芙琳作为“科学批评者”的角色包括使用专业知识审查科学观点。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“And although her PhD is in theoretical physics, she has spent her career “border crossing,” as she puts it, moving with ease between disciplines, from physics to biology, from feminist theory to the history of science, all while raising a son and a daughter as a single mother.(尽管她拥有理论物理学博士学位,但她职业生涯中却如她所言“跨越边界”,轻松地在不同学科之间穿梭,从物理学转向生物学,从女性主义理论到科学史,同时作为单亲母亲抚养着一个儿子和一个女儿)”可知,伊芙琳学术工作的特点是借鉴了不同领域的思想。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“It was this tradition that Evelyn has fought so hard to break down.(伊芙琳奋力想要打破的正是这一传统)”可知,伊芙琳奋力打破固有文化传统,说明重视独立思考,不盲从旧观念。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“In 1983, Evelyn published A Feeling for the Organism, a biography of the Nobel Prize-winning geneticist Barbara McClintock, in which she sought to differentiate McClintock’s approach to her field from that of more “reductionist” biologists. But she is perhaps best known in the feminist community for Reflections on Gender and Science, published in 1985.
【答案】8. D 9. D 10. A 11. B
【解析】
【导语】文章介绍瑞士研究者试验羊毛覆盖物减缓冰川消融,同时指出治标办法不能替代应对气候变化。
【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“The plastic covers are currently used to reflect sunlight and reduce heat absorption, but they can shed man-made fibres and microplastics into the snow and ice.(塑料覆盖物目前用于反射阳光、减少热量吸收,但它们会向冰雪中释放人造纤维和微塑料。)”可知,塑料覆盖物有效但会带来环境代价。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中“We used two test versions, one thinner and one thicker — and the thicker test version is even slightly more effective.(我们使用了两种测试样品,一种薄一点,一种厚一点——厚款测试样品效果甚至会更好一点。)”可知,较厚的本地羊毛覆盖物效果更佳。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段中“Wool’s a local material that’s undervalued. So our idea is to use this underutilized, wasted material to create a tool for protecting glaciers.(羊毛是一种被低估的本地材料。所以我们的想法是利用这种underutilized、被浪费的材料制作保护冰川的工具。)”可知,羊毛是一种被低估的本地材料。所以科学家的想法是利用这种未被充分利用、被浪费的材料制作保护冰川的工具。underutilized意为“未被充分利用的”。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第六段““In Switzerland, only 0.02% of glaciers are covered, which is practically nothing,” Timothee continued. “Therefore, thinking we can save glaciers by covering them with plastic covers is like putting a band-aid on a gaping wound that keeps getting bigger. The main focus should be on combating climate change to save our glaciers from the melting they are currently experiencing.”(Timothee继续说道:“在瑞士,只有0.02%的冰川被覆盖,这实际上微不足道。因此,指望靠塑料膜覆盖拯救冰川,就如同给一个不断扩大的巨大伤口贴创可贴。我们的重点应当放在应对气候变化,阻止冰川持续消融。”)”可知,Timothee支持解决全球变暖的根源问题。

【答案】12. D 13. A 14. C 15. A
【解析】
【导语】文章主要介绍拖延症日益普遍,阐释其成因、带来的身心与经济危害以及背后的心理原理。

【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Procrastination has been found to cost employers an estimated $20,000 per employee per year in the US, from the roughly two hours per day that employees spend procrastinating on average.(研究发现,在美国,拖延每年会让雇主为每位员工损失约2万美元,原因是员工平均每天大约有两小时在拖延。)”可知,这个数字强调拖延带来的经济成本。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中“When this immediacy principle combines with the hedonic principle, they push us to do whatever will make us feel better right now, instead of what will be better for us in the long term.(当即时性原则与享乐原则相结合时,它们会促使我们去做任何能让当下的自己更舒服的事,而非从长远来看对我们更有益的事)”可知,即时回报让拖延难以抗拒。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据第一段中“Procrastination (拖延症) is on the rise, posing a growing problem in modern life.(拖延症正在增多,成为现代生活中一个日益严重的问题。)”可知,文章围绕现代生活中的拖延症展开。“Procrastination in modern life(现代生活中的拖延症)”符合题意。

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

【答案】
Dear Chris,
I’d like to share a special experience from last Wednesday. Our class held a reading performance called “Meeting the Characters in Classics”, in which we dressed up as characters from the books and introduced their lives and achievements.
I chose to play Tu Youyou, the Chinese scientist who helped discover artemisinin. I introduced her scientific journey and performed a short scene showing her persistence in the search for an effective treatment. Taking on her role helped me understand her in a more personal way. Before the activity, I mainly saw her as a great scientist, but the performance made me realize that her achievement was built on patience, careful research and the courage to keep trying when things did not go as expected. Her story has inspired me to be patient with difficulties and serious about whatever I choose to do.
The activity brought the characters in our books closer to us, and I’m sure it will stay in my memory for a long time.
Best wishes,
Li Hua
