My 13-year-old daughter, Emily, is a planner. Last week, when her summer holiday started, she came to me with a thick notebook. “Mom, I’ve made a schedule (日程表),” she said seriously. “We need to visit the science museum on Monday, go to the art gallery on Wednesday, and take a high-speed train to the beach next weekend.”
I looked at her busy schedule. Every hour was filled with a task or a destination (目的地). It made me feel tired just reading it.
It reminded me of my own summer holidays when I was her age. My parents didn’t have much money, and we never traveled far. But I had the most wonderful time. My friends and I would explore the small forest behind our neighborhood. We caught tadpoles (蝌蚪) in the stream and tried to find different wild flowers. We built a secret base under a big old oak tree using fallen branches. We didn’t have a schedule. We just followed our curiosity (好奇心).
I wanted Emily to experience that kind of free happiness. So, instead of packing our bags for the beach, I decided to change our plans.
“Emily,” I said on Monday morning, “put away your notebook. We are going on a mystery trip today.”
“A mystery trip? But we should be at the science museum by 9 a.m.!” she said, looking a bit sad.
“Trust me,” I smiled, handing her a small magnifying glass (放大镜) and a notebook for drawing.
I drove her to the city park-not the famous one with the amusement (游乐) rides, but an old, quiet park nearby. At first, Emily looked disappointed (失望的). “This is just a park, Mom. There’s nothing to do here.”
“Look closer,” I said, pointing to a leaf.
Slowly, Emily became interested. She used the magnifying glass to watch a ladybug. She drew the shape of a strange mushroom in her notebook. We sat by the pond, listening to the frogs, without looking at the time.
For the first time in a long while, Emily wasn’t rushing to the next place. She was just enjoying the moment.
On our way home, Emily said, “Mom, today was actually fun. Can we do this again tomorrow? I want to find out what that bird was.”
I smiled. The mystery trip turned out to be the best holiday plan of all.
6. What did Emily plan to do for her summer holiday at first?
A. To explore a famous park nearby. B. To stay at home and read notebooks.
C. To follow her mother’s holiday plan. D. To follow a very busy travel schedule.
7. What did the writer do for fun during her childhood holidays?
①Caught tadpoles in the stream.
②Went to the science museum.
③Built a base with fallen branches.
④Found different wild flowers.
A. ①②③ B. ①③④ C. ②③④ D. ①②④
8. Why does the writer mention Emily’s disappointment for the park at first?
A. To show that the old park is not a good place.
B. To contrast with her later feelings.
C. To explain why her mother’s decision is not good.
D. To prove that children prefer having amusement rides.
9. What does the underlined phrase “mystery trip” mean?
A. A trip that is full of danger. B. A trip that costs a lot of money.
C. A trip with unplanned activities. D. A trip that needs careful planning.
10. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Fun of a Free Exploration B. The Magic of a Summer Schedule
C. The Importance of Family Time D. The Beauty of a Famous Beach

When the lights go out in the dormitory (宿舍) at 10:00 p.m., do you go straight to sleep? For many boarding school students, the answer is no. A strange and common phenomenon (现象) happens: the “midnight chat party.” Just when the teachers leave and the room becomes dark, the talking begins.
Why do students become so active at night? School life is busy and full of rules. During the day, students have to focus on classes, exams, and teachers. They have little time to just relax and talk. So, when they finally lie in bed, their brains finally have a chance to rest. The dark and quiet room creates a safe space. They share funny stories, talk about their favorite stars, or complain about their homework.
However, this midnight fun comes with a price. A recent study found that students who chat for more than an hour after lights-out get about 45 minutes less sleep than those who go to sleep on time. The next day, they often feel sleepy in class and can’t focus on the teacher. What’s worse, if they stay up late every night, their grades may drop, and they may get sick more easily.
How can students enjoy school life without breaking the rules? Experts suggest sharing your stories during the day instead of at night. For example, you can talk with your roommates during lunch or on your way to the classroom. When you lie in bed at night, you can think about the happy things you talked about, and let your brain relax. This way, you can still be close to your friends, but you will also get enough rest for the next day.
11. What can we learn at the beginning of this passage?
A. All students go to sleep right at 10:00 p.m.
B. Dormitories must be dark before 10 o’clock.
C. Teachers join in students’ midnight chat party.
D. Some students talk with roommates after lights-out.
12. Why do students like the “midnight chat party”?
A. Because they want to discuss their exams.
B. Because they feel safe to talk in the dark room.
C. Because they don’t want to have a rest at night.
D. Because they want to complain about the school rules.
13. What does the writer mean by saying “comes with a price” in paragraph 3?
A. Students have to pay money for the chat.
B. Students need to buy something for the chat.
C. Students may get bad results from the chat.
D. Students may lose money because of the chat.
14. According to the experts, how can students enjoy school life?
A. By thinking about happy things all night long.
B. By staying up late to chat in the dormitory.
C. By sharing stories with roommates during the day.
D. By keeping silent and not talking to anyone.
15. How does the writer organize this passage?
A. The writer compares two different ideas.
B. The writer shows a problem and offers a solution.
C. The writer tells events according to the time order.
D. The writer gives an opinion and uses some examples.
D
