Dolphins are clever, social and playful animals. They live and hunt together in large groups, and make different sounds to communicate with each other. They love playing and jumping high out of the water.
Dolphins live in the sea but they are actually mammals. This means they are warm-blooded, just like us. Their babies need to drink their mother’s milk to grow. Dolphins also need air to survive, so they regularly come up to the surface of the sea to breathe. They can stay underwater for up to 15 minutes before they need to do this.
Dolphins are amazing swimmers. They can swim up to 32 kilometres per hour. Dolphins sleep for about 8 hours every day, but they only sleep with half of their brain at a time. This way, they can keep swimming and breathing at the same time.
There are many stories about the special relationship between dolphins and humans. For example, dolphins sometimes guide lost swimmers back to safety. Dolphins can also be very brave and protect people from dangerous animals like sharks. Such brave and kind acts show that dolphins are wonderful friends to us!
