It was a cold Wednesday morning when Pete Stamatis, an industrial engineer at General Motors (GM), was driving to work at the Parma Metal Center in Ohio. His routine commute changed instantly when he saw a vehicle lose control and crash into a tree. Stamatis quickly pulled over to help. He moved the driver, passenger, and their dog into his car — then learned a second dog was still inside. After safely rescuing the animal, Stamatis called 911. Moments later, a tractor trailer slammed into the disabled car, crushing it. His fast response prevented a tragedy. This instinct to act wasn’t accidental. By day, Stamatis manages plant quality, but by night he throws himself into his work as a volunteer firefighter in Amherst, Ohio. His journey into firefighting began in 2020 while finishing his industrial engineering degree at Ohio State. Inspired by meeting a volunteer firefighter during an internship — and raised with a strong sense of service — he decided to join a department himself. “It was a way I could make a difference for the people who need it most,” he says. After graduating in 2020, Stamatis joined GM's TRACK rotation program and simultaneously entered the Northeast Oakland Fire Academy in Michigan. He volunteered with the Troy Fire Department before relocating to Ohio in 2023. Now, as an industrial engineer at Parma, he continues to serve as a firefighter in Amherst. “One of the best aspects of fire service is being able to help people on their worst days,” Stamatis says. “Of course, I never want there to be a car accident or fire, but when there is, I want to be there to do my part.” His dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. “Pete is a kind guy with a big heart who had the guts to make a huge impact on a terrifying situation,” says Amherst Fire Chief Brandon Dimacchia. “We’re lucky to have him on our team.” 4. What mainly made Stamatis respond quickly to the car crash? A. A 911 operator’s guidance. B. His industrial engineer training. C. His volunteer firefighter experience. D. Past experience in handling his own car accident. 5. Which is TRUE about Stamatis’s start in firefighting? A. He trained in Ohio right after moving there. B. He began considering it while finishing college. C. Only a volunteer firefighter inspired him to join. D. He joined the Troy Fire Department before a fire academy. 6. What is the meaning of the underlined part in the last paragraph? A. A person willing to take risks in daily work. B. A person having the chance to solve a difficult problem. C. A person having the ability to predict dangerous accidents. D. A person brave enough to make a difference in a scary event. 7. Which of the following is TRUE about Stamatis’s job as a firefighter? A. His firefighting sparked his interest in GM. B. His strong sense of service made him engage in firefighting. C. His firefighting made the same difference to people in need as GM work. D. The engineering skills he gained at GM have benefited his firefighting work. The idea of growing food in a desert would make most people laugh but this is quickly becoming a reality. There are currently two desert farms in the world where quality vegetables are being planted cheaply and easily. Sundrop Farms, based in South Australia, uses experimental greenhouses to grow tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. The biggest challenge of growing food in a desert, obviously, is the lack of available water. The researchers at Sundrop Farms have gotten around this problem by using the sun to desalinate (淡化) sea water. It can also be used to control the temperature of the greenhouses. Without depending on limited resources such as land and fresh water Sundrop Farms has made farming a practice. This can increase the world’s food supplies. Another benefit of this kind of farming is that it can be done anywhere, thus reducing the costs of transporting food to distant locations. Yet another benefit is that it reduces the need for pesticides (杀虫剂). Another experimental desert farm is the Sahara Forest Project, which began in Qatar in December 2012. Greenhouses in the farm are cooled by saltwater. Solar power and other technologies are used together to help make vegetation (植被) grow in the desert environment. As deserts have expanded over recent years around the world due to global warming, this project could solve the problem. The result form the Qatar project were better than expected and in June of 2014, Jordan agreed to host another one. This will be much bigger than the Qatar project and the project members will have even more opportunities to test their experiments on a much larger scale. It is not clear yet that desert farming resents the future of farming but these projects have shown some success in the field. 8. What does “this problem” in paragraph 2 refer to? A. Sea water is bard to purify. B. The desert is short of water. C. The temperature is high in the desert. D. Desert farms aren’t fit to plant vegetables. 9. What is one of the characters of desert farming? A. It needs more pesticides. B. It saves delivery costs. C. It has a location limit. D. It solves food waste problems 10. What can we know about the Sabara Forest Project? A. It lives up to expectations B. It can help produce more food C. It is started to prevent global warming D. It uses technology to produce saltwater 11. What can be inferred about desert farming from the last paragraph? A. It still has problems to solve. B. It represents the future of farming. C. Its early success has aroused interest in it. D. Its aim is to create more job opportunities. Birds that are active during the day sing later into the night in areas with heavy light pollution, according to research by Brent Pease of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and Neil Gilbert of Oklahoma State University. Analyzing more than 180 million bird vocalizations (歌声) worldwide alongside satellite imagery, they found that under the brightest skies, birds extended daily activity by nearly an hour. Their paper, “Light pollution prolongs avian (鸟类的) activity”, was published in Science on Aug. 21. The project came about in Pease’s effort to excite undergraduates about birds. Two years ago, he installed a microphone to broadcast local birdsong on campus. Later, he adopted BirdWeather devices, which use Wi-Fi, GPS, sensors and AI connected to the BirdNET database, enabling real-time detection of bird species. This opened new opportunities to study not only where birds are found but also how they behave continuously. Just as trail cameras revolutionized mammal studies decades ago, BirdWeather and BirdNET now allow large-scale behavioral studies of birds. Using machine learning, BirdNET transforms recordings into spectrograms (声谱图) that identify avian species against a database of over 6,000. This allows analysis of continuous audio data that would otherwise take lifetimes to process. Pease and Gilbert were the first to apply and analyze the BirdWeather data in this way. They have many research options, but first they focused on responses to light pollution. Pease noted, on average birds stayed active an hour longer. Actual times varied by species. The researchers then asked why. A key factor turned out to be photoreceptor sensitivity Species with proportionally larger eyes responded more strongly to artificial light than those with smaller eyes. Whether this shift benefits or harms birds remains uncertain. Extended activity may increase opportunities for feeding and mating, but reduced sleep could hurt long-term health. Since 2021, BirdWeather has collected over 1.4 billion vocalizations from 11,000 locations worldwide. Pease called the project “citizen-science at its best”, noting that a tool built for backyard birdwatchers has become a powerful engine for wildlife research. He and Gilbert plan to continue applying the technology to explore the impacts of human forces, particularly light pollution, on global bird populations. 12. Why did Pease set up a microphone on campus initially? A. To support a global study. B. To document local noise levels. C. To measure effects of artificial light. D. To inspire students’ curiosity about birds. 13. What key advance did BirdWeather and BirdNET bring? A. Identifying unknown species worldwide. B. Processing continuous bird behavior at scale. C. Replacing fieldwork on birds with satellite tracking. D. Tracking the regular movement of birds from one place to another. 14. Which feature best explains birds’ varied reactions to light? A. Relative eye size and sensitivity. B. Developmental background. C. Geographic range. D. Voice strength. 15. What’s the best title of the passage? A. Citizen Science in Wildlife Research B. How Artificial Light Affects Birds’ Eyes C. Light Pollution Keeps Birds Active Longer D. Dad smiled, handing us a list, “Lily, you’ll handle planning the layout (布局) and buying seedlings (幼苗). Tom, you’ re in charge of clearing the weeds and digging the soil. Teamwork makes the dream work” He paused, glancing at the calendar on the wall where Mom’s birthday was circled in red. “Three months is quite enough for those tomato seedlings to bear fruit—perfect timing if we get started now.” The first weekend, conflict erupted. I spent hours researching online but forgot to buy the seedlings, comforting myself “too busy with homework.” Tom was pulling weeds for hours, sweating profusely. Several days later, he marched into the garden expecting to find rows of seedlings, only to be met with empty yard, and then exploded with anger, shouting “You didn’t even do your basic job I’m doing all the hard work while you’re sitting on the couch Look! My gloves are worn out” I fired back, “Digging is easy My part requires intelligence, not just brute force” We refused to speak to each other, leaving the half-cleared yard in chaos. Dad didn’t intervene immediately; instead, he left a note on the kitchen table, “Labor teaches us responsibility, and teamwork means supporting each other, not blaming.” That night, I couldn’t sleep, remembering how Tom had helped me fix my bike last year, even though he’d had a fever. Meanwhile, Tom lay in his room staring at the layout paper I threw to him earlier that week, recalling the way I’d lingered over the layout drawings many times, saying, “Mom will definitely love it.” The next morning, I woke up at dawn, grabbed my wallet, and raced to the store. I came back with not just tomato seedlings but also a new pair of gardening gloves for Tom. Para. 1: Tom was already in the backyard when I arrived. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Para. 2: Finally, the big day came—Mom’s birthday. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 鼎城一中2026年下期高二年级考试英语试卷 总分:150分 时量:120分钟 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 1. 4. C 5. B 6. D 7. B 9. B 10. A 11. 根据文章第二段划线词前句“The biggest challenge of growing food in a desert, obviously, is the lack of available water.(在沙漠中种植粮食的最大挑战,显然是缺乏可用的水。)” 根据文章第三段“Another benefit of this kind of farming is that it can be done anywhere, thus reducing the costs of transporting food to distant locations. A key factor turned out to be photoreceptor sensitivity (光感受器敏感度). Species with proportionally larger eyes responded more strongly to artificial light than those with smaller eyes. BirdWeather: A Revolutionary Tool for Bird Watching 【答案】12. D 13. B 14. A 15. C 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了科学家通过研究发现,光污染使日间活动的鸟类夜间鸣叫时间延长约1小时,且眼睛较大的鸟类受影响更明显。该研究利用全球鸟类声音数据,揭示人造光对鸟类行为的影响与潜在利弊。 【12题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段第一、二句“The project came about in Pease’s effort to excite undergraduates about birds. Two years ago, he installed a microphone to broadcast local birdsong on campus.(这个项目的诞生,源于Pease为激发本科生对鸟类的兴趣所做的努力。两年前,他在校园里安装了一个麦克风,用于播放当地的鸟鸣声)”可知,Pease在校园安装麦克风的直接目的是激发本科生对鸟类的兴趣。故选D。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中“This opened new opportunities to study not only where birds are found but also how they behave continuously. Just as trail cameras revolutionized mammal studies decades ago, BirdWeather and BirdNET now allow large-scale behavioral studies of birds.(这为研究鸟类的分布情况以及它们的持续行为提供了新的机遇。正如几十年前的追踪相机改变了对哺乳动物的研究一样,如今BirdWeather和BirdNET使得对鸟类的大型行为研究成为可能)”以及第三段中“Using machine learning, BirdNET transforms recordings into spectrograms (声谱图) that identify avian species against a database of over 6,000. This allows analysis of continuous audio data that would otherwise take lifetimes to process.(借助机器学习技术,BirdNET会将录音转化为声谱图,再通过比对一个包含6000多种鸟类的数据库来识别鸟类物种。这一技术让持续音频数据的分析成为可能——若没有它,这些数据的处理可能需要耗费数人一生的时间)”可知,BirdWeather和BirdNET使对鸟类行为的大规模研究以及持续的音频数据分析成为可能;由此可知,BirdWeather和BirdNET的核心突破是实现了对鸟类持续行为的大规模研究处理。故选B。 【14题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中的“A key factor turned out to be photoreceptor sensitivity (光感受器敏感度). Species with proportionally larger eyes responded more strongly to artificial light than those with smaller eyes.(一个关键因素被证明是光感受器敏感度。眼睛比例更大的鸟类,对人造光的反应比眼睛较小的鸟类更强烈)”可知,鸟类对光污染反应存在差异的核心原因是“光感受器敏感度”和“相对眼睛大小”——眼睛比例更大的物种对人造光反应更强烈。故选A。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“Birds that are active during the day sing later into the night in areas with heavy light pollution, according to research by Brent Pease of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and Neil Gilbert of Oklahoma State University.(根据南伊利诺伊大学卡本代尔分校的Brent Pease与俄克拉荷马州立大学的Neil Gilbert的研究,在光污染严重的区域,白天活跃的鸟类会将鸣叫(活动)延续到更晚的夜晚)”并结合全文内容可知,文章核心围绕一项研究展开,该研究探讨了光污染如何延长鸟类的活动时间,同时介绍了研究采用的技术(BirdWeather和BirdNET)及研究发现。C选项“Light Pollution Keeps Birds Active Longer(光污染使鸟类的活动时间更长)”准确概括了研究主题,符合文章主旨,为最佳标题。故选C。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Five Ways to End Procrastination Never put off till tomorrow what may be done today. Waiting until later is one of life's guilty secrets, but procrastination (拖延症) is linked to poorer health, work and relationship outcomes. Here are five ways to try to remedy (纠正) procrastination. 1. A five-minute start Five minutes is nothing — it's just three hundred seconds. It's the length of a song or a TV commercial. Pick up a project you've been putting off and spare just 300 seconds of your time to do it.___16___ After a while, the momentum (动力) of beginning the task will push you forward. 2. Set goals and rewards During the day, set goals and rewards. Each time you achieve a goal, you earn the reward: a short break, a funny YouTube video or something else.____17____Make sure you select a time to review your progress and adjust your targets accordingly. 3. Be good to yourself — me today versus me tomorrow Sometimes, when you find yourself buried in work, you are upset with yourself for not having started earlier. Imagine a conversation, between ―you today and ―you tomorrow. ___18___ 4. I was there — witnessing accountability (责任制) ___19___ Consider going on a diet: Is there more pressure if you don't tell a soul, or if you announce it to all your friends, with strict rules to follow if you are invited to dinner? It seems an obvious way of making you feel guilty, but it can also be highly effective. 5. Set creative punishments — negative consequences Make the consequences of inaction so unbearable that you have no choice but to get busy now. You could write a note to someone that you don't like. Give the note to a friend with strict instructions to mail the note if you do not achieve your goal. The more you dislike the other party, the stronger the motivation to get the task done. Procrastination is a silent killer of dreams._____20_____By understanding and fixing your procrastination, you'll discover you jump-start many areas of your life. A. Everyone suffers from it. B. Once the five minutes is up, stop and reassess. C. Everyone likes to have a dream of procrastination. D. Going public with a goal increases your support and accountability. E. What is the future of my life with the intention of putting off my tasks? F. If ―you tomorrow could chat with ―you today, what would he say? G. It's important that the goals are realistic and the rewards are in proportion(按比例). 【答案】16. B 17. G 18. F 19. D 20. 注意:(1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Para. 1: Tom was already in the backyard when I arrived. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Para. 2: Finally, the big day came—Mom’s birthday. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Tom was already in the backyard when I arrived. I approached quietly, holding out the gloves and seedlings. “Sorry I messed up earlier, I shouldn’t have been rude to you.” I mumbled. Tom turned around, with a faint surprise crossing his face. He took them readily and grinned, “That’s all right. Let’s get started.” Together, we planted the seedlings, him digging neat holes and me arranging them according to the layout. Sweat dripped down our faces, but laughter replaced our earlier misunderstanding as we helped each other. We waited, hopeful for a little miracle to take root. Finally, the big day came — Mom’s birthday. We led her to the garden, where ripe tomatoes hung thick and heavy on the branches. Mom hugged us tightly, tears blurring her vision, “This is the best birthday gift — seeing you two work together.” Dad, together with us, picked some fresh tomatoes to make sauce. We enjoyed it, chatting and laughing joyfully. Teamwork and understanding didn’t just grow plants, they bonded our hearts closer and wove our family closer. Family love is a gift far sweeter than any sauce, a memory we would cherish forever. 1】I approached quietly, holding out the gloves and seedlings.(运用现在分词短语 holding out the gloves and seedlings作伴随状语) 【高分句型 2】Mom hugged us tightly, tears blurring her vision, “This is the best birthday gift—seeing you two work together.”(运用独立主格结构) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
