China has experienced rapid development in many areas. People’s lifestyles, shopping habits, and even daily communication have changed greatly. These changes can be seen clearly in the following talks between the older and younger generations (一代人).
Camera
I bought my first camera in 1998 in Beijing. It was from Japan. At that time, you could only buy things from other countries in special stores. Back then, cameras used expensive film (胶卷) and it usually cost around 15 yuan to develop a roll of film. But at that time, I only made 510 yuan a month! So every photo was very important.
Xu Zhenhe, 57, Beijing
Cameras weren’t common in my father’s time, but now we can buy all kinds of cameras online both from China and foreign countries. Actually, high-cost cameras are no longer needed in ordinary people’s daily life. Usually, the cameras on our phones are good enough for us to take photos now. We can even make photos more beautiful on our phones. Besides, phones have storage for thousands of pictures and videos.
Xu Zhaolin, 25, Beijing
Food coupon (粮票)
When I was a kid, we had to use food coupons to get food. Each person had a fixed quantity (定量) of them each month. Sometimes we didn’t have enough rice to eat, so we could only eat the stored grains like sweet potatoes. At that time, every meal felt like a present, and we never wasted any food.
Huang Kunrong, 72, Sichuan
Compared with my grandma, we lead a much better life now without worrying about food shortage. We can enjoy different kinds of food every day. We also travel to many different places and taste local dishes. What’s more, food coupons have become history. And we don’t even need paper money. Instead, we use our phones to pay. It’s quite convenient!
Xiao Yao, 14, Sichuan

Do you know 5G? It is the fifth generation (代) of mobile network technology. These new networks are coming.
China just issued commercial licenses (发放商用牌照) for 5G on June 6, 2019. This means that China’s telecom companies will be able to offer 5G networks to mobile phone users.
Each mobile network generation is faster and more powerful than the one before it. 1G let us talk to each other. 2G let us send messages. 3G gave us data (数据) and the Internet. And 4G made all of these things faster. What’s special about 5G?
5G has a very short delay between sending and receiving information. Now, 4G takes about 100 to 200 milliseconds (毫秒) to send and receive data. But 5G will get it down to 1 millisecond or less—this is almost real-time.
This big change will not only make our mobile Internet faster, but also deeply change our lives. Read on to find out how.
5G+ entertainment (娱乐)
5G networks are about 100 times faster than 4G. This means you can download a movie in seconds using 5G.
Also, virtual reality (VR) games will become more popular with 5G. The short delay of 5G will make the games feel even more real.
5G+ transport
5G will also bring us safer self-driving cars. These cars can send signals (信号) to each other. They also talk to traffic lights and road sensors (传感器). 5G will allow cars to react (反应) even faster than human drivers.
5G+ smart homes
5G also makes the Internet of Things possible. Internet of Things is a large network that connects everything to the Internet. Smart homes are part of it.
For example, your toaster can automatically (自动地) start making breakfast after your alarm rings. And if its sensor feels the air becoming dry, a smart sprinkler (洒水器) could water your plants by itself.
12. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing the third paragraph?
A. To explain 5G is the best of all. B. To share his knowledge about 5G.
C. To show the development of mobile network technology. D. To tell us about 2G.
13. What does the underlined word “delay” in paragraph 4 mean in Chinese?
A. 卡顿 B. 延时 C. 暂停 D. 切断
14. Which of the following ways is not mentioned that 5G will change people’s lives?
A. Health care. B. Entertainment. C. Transport. D. Smart homes.
15. What will people do possibly with 5G according to the passage?
A. Download a movie in minutes. B. Put everything onto the Internet.
C. Make self-driving cars safer. D. Buy whatever people like on the Internet.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. A 15. C
第三段中“1G let us talk to each other. 2G let us send messages. 3G gave us data (数据) and the Internet. And 4G made all of these things faster.”表明,第三段依次介绍1G、2G、3G、4G各自的功能,展现移动通信技术的发展过程。
【13题详解】
第四段指出“5G has a very short delay between sending and receiving information”,并通过“Now, 4G takes about 100 to 200 milliseconds (毫秒) to send and receive data. But 5G will get it down to 1 millisecond or less—this is almost real-time.”
文章“5G+ transport”部分中的“5G will also bring us safer self-driving cars.”说明,5G将使自动驾驶汽车更安全。

Youth is the “golden time” to explore and work hard. Young people are always energetic and have big dreams. They remember things quickly and well. As the saying goes, “Heroes are made, not born. It starts when they are young.” Young heroes made their mark in every period of Chinese history.
Jia Yi was a writer and statesman (政治家) of the Western Han Dynasty. When he was a teenager, he became well-known in his home county for his writing skills. When Jia was 21 years old, Emperor Wendi offered him a job as his consultant (顾问), the youngest one at that time. Later, he taught one of the princes. And he came up with lots of useful advice on how to achieve long-term peace and quick development of his country in many articles.
Young women didn’t fall behind in becoming heroes in Chinese history, such as Wang Zhenyi in the Qing Dynasty. As a girl, Wang couldn’t go to school, but she taught herself subjects like science, math, geography and poetry. Finally, she wrote many famous poems and became a great scientist. The world remembers her today as one of the greatest Chinese women of the 18th century.
These young heroes had a lot for us to learn, since they didn’t become heroes naturally. It still took them great effort. Of course, being a hero doesn’t mean being famous today. The people who work hard, shine at common work and help others in daily life are also heroes.
Youth is the best time to explore and work hard.
