The summer I turned sixteen, my grandfather came to live with us. His arrival changed everything. Grandpa had always been my hero — he taught me to whittle (削) wood and tell different bird calls. But the once strong smiling man from my childhood was gone. The man who came here was quiet and confused. He had Alzheimer’s disease.
My mother, feeling worried, explained to me, “He might forget things, Mike. He might get lost, even the house. We have to watch him.”
Watching him became my job. My friends would text, “Come to the pool!” and I’d have to reply, “Can’t. Watching Grandpa.” My summer holiday was traded for the long hours of keeping an old man safe. Resentment gradually built up inside me. I was stuck in a silent house with a person who sometimes didn’t even remember my name.
One afternoon, I found him standing by the front door, with his bag in his hand. “I have to get home,” he said. “My grandson is waiting for me. He’s only seven.”
My frustration boiled over. “I am your grandson!” I shouted. “And I’m sixteen! Just sit down!” Grandpa looked at me, not with anger, but with deep sadness. He slowly put the bag down and moved back to his chair.
I realized I had disappointed the man who had once had endless patience with a little boy asking a thousand questions.
The next day, I decided to try a different way. I found his old whittling knife and a piece of wood. “Grandpa,” I said softly, “could you show me how?”
He looked at the wood, and then my face. For a moment, his eyes lit up with recognition. His hands covered mine. “Like this, Mike,” he said quietly.
We didn’t speak much after that. But we whittled wood. We sat together for hours. I was no longer just his guard. In those quiet afternoons, I became his bridge back to a world he understood. I learned that sometimes love is just about siting with someone, holding their hand and whitling away terrible feelings. I stopped being a boy waiting for his summer to start, and started being the man my grandfather needed me to be.

All around the world, there are strange records of animals falling from the sky. Ancient Greek texts describe rains of frozen frogs. As recently as 2021, a city in Texas reported a rain of fish! Though they sound unbelievable, these strange rains are scientifically possible.
Rains of animals may happen naturally. In certain stormy weather, strong winds can create waterspouts (水龙卷). They can lift up water and maybe even small animals. A waterspout can travel over water and onto coastal land, sometimes ending up far from where it formed. As the waterspout loses energy over time, it will drop whatever it lifted up — which could include fish or frogs!
Sometimes, animal rains are actually an illusion. In the central Australian desert, when it rains hard, the ground is covered with frogs. Though it looks like these frogs fell with the rain, they actually came from the ground. Because of the very hot and dry weather, Australian water-holding frogs can’t live above ground for very long. They spend most of their lives in underground holes. They are able to sense when it’s raining, which means it’s safe to come out. Because it seldom rains in the Australian desert, the frogs may only be able to leave their holes a few times a year.
Sometimes, humans create animal rains on purpose. People in Utah love to fish in quiet lakes far up in the mountains, but if too many people are fishing, the fish in the lakes may run out. To prevent this, the government has a plan. They raise fish in other places, and then bring some of those baby fish back into the lakes. However, it’s not always possible to carry so many fish up the mountain paths. Instead, they use a plane. They drop the fish as they fly over the lakes. This helps keep the lakes full of fish for both the environment and people to enjoy.
