It was in a secondhand bookstore that I first encountered the magic of annotations(
Flipping through the pages of an old copy of The Great Gatsby,I discovered delicate notes
penciled in margins()-reflections on Gatsby's dreams,sighs over Daisy's choices,and
even a tiny teardrop spot beside the tragic ending. The unmet reader's emotions seemed to
breathe through the paper, turning the book into a living dialogue across time.
On TikTok and Instagram, readers now share their creatively annotated books with
color-marked notes that sometimes fill full pages. This trend has sparked a debate:Is the
practice of annotations a bad habit or a beneficial effort?
Historically, annotations have been a powerful tool for deep learning.Leonardo da Vinci
scribbled()thoughts on gravity in the Codex Arundel years before Galileo published his
work on the subject, proving how annotations can harbor groundbreaking ideas.Similarly,
writers like Herman Melville and Edgar Allan Poe used margins to refine their thoughts. In
the academic community, annotations are celebrated for enhancing comprehension and critical
thinking.In writing workshops,deep reading-including annotations-helps students express
interpretations and maintain "learner independence".
However, annotation styles online seem to differ widely from the annotations expected in
the academic community. While some criticize them as overly decorative, their value lies in
serving the reader's purpose.Highlighting every piece of dialogue from your favorite character
may seem unreasonable to an outsider, but that might help someone understand why they like
that character or how the writer developed the character's story.Romance readers are known
to highlight,dog-ear and annotate their favorite romantic scenes.
I may be overly romanticizing secondhand books, but there's nothing more heartfelt than
finding a previous reader's favorite kissing scene. If the book-related content creators want to
make their bookmark, highlighter, sticky notes and gel pen match the cover of.their favorite
new science-fiction tale,that's great.Scribbling in margins isn't hurting anyone,so let them
eat cake even if they dirty the page.

"Tie an Italian's hands behind his back, and he'll be speechless."This old joke conveys a
rigid image of Italians:they are talkative and emotional, and all their arm movements
supposedly go to prove it.
Susan Goldin-Meadow of the University of Chicago has a rather different view.Emotions
come out in lots of ways:facial.expressions, posture, tone of voice and so on.But people are
doing something different when they use gestures()with speech, which she sums up in
the title of her new book,Thinking With Your Hands.
In fact, everyone gestures, not just Italians.Conference interpreters gesture in their little
rooms, though no one is looking.People born blind gesture when they speak, including to
each other,.All this suggests that cognition is,to some extent,“embodied(具体化)”,and
that thinking is not all done in your head.Gestures that accompany speech are a second
channel of information.People who say they believe in gender equality but gesture with their
hands lower are not indicating women's shorter height;they can be shown to have prejudices
(偏见)of which they may not be aware.
Child development is the focus of Goldin-Meadow's book. Some students working on a
difficult mathematics problem may gesture in a way that indicates they have already understood
it.They should be taught differently from the ones whose gestures suggest that they are
entirely at sea.Goldin-Meadow believes that gesturing could play a larger role in education by
addressing the student's needs better.
This is well explained in the book's last section.Teachers are encouraged both to use
gestures themselves and to observe those their students make.Parents are taught to fill in the
word a child is most likely to be missing when they gesture rather than adding information.
Children with language delays caused by brain injuries at birth, but who gesture as much as
their peers, are likely to catch up verbally by the age of about 30 months. Those who gesture
less are more likely to need early intervention.
28.Why is the joke mentioned in the first paragraph?
A.To set a serious tone for this article.
B.To show that Italians are quiet and emotional.
C.To correct people's wrong impression of Italians.
D.To illustrate the relationship between gestures and speech.

It's commonly acknowledged that our lives are ruled by algorithms(),but have we
really collectively understood how they have transformed our culture and personality?
In Filterworld:How algorithms flattened culture,Kyle Chayka argues convincingly
that the rise of algorithm-driven feeds, used everywhere online from Instagram to Spotify, has
led to a more uniform culture. Our tastes and desires increasingly don't belong to us,but to
algorithms that are designed to keep people engaged at all costs. If the collection of our tastes
truly shapes our entire personality, then this loss is more psychologically damaging than it
first appears.Aimlessly scrolling through Netflix or TikTok may seem harmless, but over
days, months or years,we lose touch with what we like and enjoy.
Taste-making algorithms are inescapable.Chayka shows this by working through all
corners of life:what we wear(TikTok),where we eat(Google Maps),music we listen to
(Spotify),even who we date or marry(Tinder). This universe of algorithm-driven decisions
has society-wide implications:"It extends to influence our physical spaces, our cities, and the
routes we move through...flattening them in turn."No one gets out of the Filterworld untouched.
If you're lucky enough not to need any sort of algorithm-based system for your work,
then you have the option to step back from algorithms for a while. But if your friend suggests
a film recommended on X/Twitter or you feel the need to buy those shoes suddenly everyone
has started wearing after social media advertisements, what are you to do?It all feels fruitless.
This Filterworld may be inescapable, but there is hope. You can start by engaging more
with the media you do choose to consume. This could mean reading up about a film you
watched or paying artists you like directly.Even the thoughtful act of recommending an album
to a friend is more rewarding than a random TikTok feed.As Chayka says, resistance to
algorithms"requires an act of willpower,a choice to move through the world in a different way."
32.What is Kyle Chayka's opinion on algorithms?
A.They improve our tastes.
B.They make our cultures more alike.
C.They help to identify our personality.
D.They contribute to physical problems.
33.What does the underlined part in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The society with advanced technology.
B.The world without social media platforms.
C.The network of algorithm-driven decisions.
D.The community free from algorithmic influence.
34.What is the author's attitude towards resisting the influence of algorithms?
A.Unconcerned.
B.Supportive.
C.Negative.
D.Unclear.

The Benefits of Making Fun of Yourself
Laughing at yourself is not always easily achieved. However, making light of your weakness
can have surprising benefits for your self-esteem().36
Joking about yourself is a form of self-critical humor, which can involve being too modest,or
even laughing at yourself humorously.37 However, research suggests they tend to be
more self-confident.When this type of humor is used to maintain a positive attitude in difficult
situations,it can help enhance well-being and self-esteem.
38 Making fun of yourself may help you become more likable and build stronger
relationships.Interestingly, research suggests that both men and women consider the ability
to do so an attractive quality, despite differences in the ways they use humor.
Laughter has been shown to have a number of stress-fighting benefits.39 When you
view situations as threats, stress levels increase.Shifting to a mindset that allows you to see
these situations as challenges can transform this into what is known as "good stress"that
helps you feel more empowered.
Joking lightly about yourself can have some benefits, but it's important not to take things
too far.If this starts negatively impacting your mental health or well-being,it's time to take a
step back.40 If you embrace your weakness and imperfections to a reasonable degree,
you will feel happier and improve your relationships and overall well-being.
A.Find a balance that works for you.
B.Our mood hardly changes when we keep our sense of humor.
C.People are more drawn to others who can laugh at themselves.
D.Being able to laugh at yourself can relieve stress by changing your view.
E.Making fun of yourself in difficult situations can increase your stress greatly.
F.It might even improve your relationships and help you meet challenges better.

第二节(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)

Many cutting-edge sustainable buildings around the world are drawing inspiration from
age-old Chinese architectural ideas,56 (prove)that traditional design philosophies still
hold great value for solving today's environmental challenges.
One of the most representative examples 57 (be)the skywell,or tianjing, the open
inner courtyard 58 (wide)employed in Huizhou-style dwellings of the Ming and Qing
dynasties. In ancient southern China,59 summers are hot and humid, the compact
skywell was designed 60 (admit)daylight into deep rooms, encourage natural air
circulation, and collect rainwater.Warm air inside the house rises and escapes upwards, while
cooler air flows downwards to refresh the interior. This passive cooling method required no
electricity and helped residents stay 61 (refresh)throughout the long summer.
This clever concept has been revived by contemporary architects, with many modern
office buildings,62 (museum)and residential complexes now integrating skywells into their
layouts. These openings reduce dependence 63 artificial lighting during daytime and promote
natural ventilation, cutting air-conditioning energy consumption and lowering carbon footprints.
Beyond skywells, other traditional ideas are also being rediscovered, such as overhanging
eaves()that offer 64 (protect)from strong summer sunlight while letting in gentle
winter sunshine.Architects point out that traditional designs are not ready-made solutions to
copy directly,65 a source of inspiration for modern designers to learn from.

Bob Lee is a retired teacher who loves writing handwritten letters more than most people
love their kids.Every day,he writes to his daughter Lisa.Moved by her father's passion,
Lisa posted a video online, asking if anyone needed a little kindness from a warm-hearted
retired teacher. To her surprise, hundreds of people replied. She then founded the "Dad
Letter Project",inviting other kind dads such as Mark to write to strangers who are sad,
stressed,or simply longing for some fatherly comfort.
Thousands of miles away,Amy Woods was struggling on the fourth anniversary of her
father's death. Her father was an artistic and open-minded man and passed away in 2021.
They had a complicated relationship, and Amy was filled with lasting love as well as regret.
She had long kept an old photo of her father in a small box.Every time she looked at it,those
mixed feelings would come flooding back, yet she seldom showed it to anyone.
One day,she sent a short message to the project. She was only hoping for a little comfort,
but she was very guarded around strangers and had no real hope that anyone would care.
Weeks later,a letter from Mark finally arrived. At her kitchen table, she read his words:
"As a dad,I am proud of you-the way you wonder and think about your dad is really
special.Tears streamed down her face.
Deeply moved,Amy decided she would write back. She pulled out a piece of paper, with
Mark's letter lying beside her.

But when I walked into the Humble Administrator's Garden,I was so amazed! It was like stepping into a painting.
W:Where else did you go?
M:I visited the Lingering Garden, too.I learned a lot about traditional Chinese garden architecture.
W:Oh,well, what about the Tiger Hill-that's pretty high. Some of the views from there are breathtaking!

high school art teacher, near a hiking trail in Interlaken in 2022.There was no name or address, but it
contained beautiful drawings of mountains and forests, with a short poem on the cover.Impressed by the
artwork and poem,Lucas kept the sketchbook and began searching online for its owner.Last month,he
came across a news article about a Vancouver student organizing an environmental art exhibition using
nature-themed paintings. The article quoted her poem-the very one on the cover of the sketchbook.Lucas
contacted the reporter of the article, who helped him reach Emma, now 17.Soon,the sketchbook was
returned.Emma was shocked and deeply moved."I thought it was gone forever,"she said."The
sketchbook's journey home reminds us that small acts of kindness can bridge distances and bring joy across
time and borders..”

Dear Mr.Green,
I'm sorry to learn that you feel discouraged and think that we are not fond of your class because we seldom
raise our hands. As a matter of fact,we really appreciate your lessons. We hesitate to speak up largely because
we fear making mistakes and feeling embarrassed;this fear is rooted in our cultural background.
I would like to offer a few suggestions.Could you please give us more time to organize our thoughts after
you ask us a question?Besides, group discussions can effectively encourage us to express our opinions.
I hope these suggestions will be of some help.
Yours,
Li Hua

One possible version:
With her pen in hand,Amy hesitated, unsure whether she could trust a stranger. She had built a high wall
around her heart to hide her pain. Why should she open up to a man she had never met?But reading Mark's
warm words, she felt her guard slowly breaking down. After a long pause, she gathered her courage and began
to write. She shared precious memories of her father and the sadness about their imperfect relationship.
Thinking of the photo in the box,she took out a copy and put it carefully into the envelope,as if passing on her
hard-won trust.Taking a deep breath, she sealed it and dropped it into the nearby mailbox, hoping it would
reach Mark.
Seeing the copy of the small old photo in the envelope,Mark felt a sudden warmth. He could feel the
great trust hidden in this simple photo. It must have taken Amy great courage to share such a private memory
with a stranger.Deeply moved,he showed the letter and photo to Lisa and Bob,both of whom were touched by
this fragile but precious connection. It was at that moment that they realized their project was never just about
giving comfort;it was a two-way journey of healing.Mark soon wrote back, telling Amy how much her courage
had inspired him.Sincere kindness,as their story proved, can break down the wall between strangers.
