Last month, something happened that changed how I think about myself.
It was the 800-meter race in P. E. class. I’m not a fast runner, but I wanted to look strong in front of my classmates. By the last round, my legs felt like noodles. But I kept telling myself, “Don’t stop. Don’t look weak,”
Then I fell — hard. About ten meters from the finish line, my foot caught on something. My knees hit the ground. My hands were bleeding. I heard some kids gasp (倒抽气).
My face burned red. I wanted to disappear.
For a moment, I thought about getting up quickly and pretending (假装) it didn’t hurt. But I couldn’t. It hurt too much. So I just sat on the ground, tears (眼泪) in my eyes.
Then my best friend Mia ran back. She didn’t ask if I was OK — she already knew I wasn’t. She just sat down right next to me. Other classmates came together. Some brought water. One girl said, “I fell here last year too. It really hurts.”
When I got to the nurse’s office, I sat thinking. I had spent so much energy trying to look strong. I was afraid to seem weak. But when I showed my real self — hurt, crying, falling — they helped me.
The next day at lunch, I told Mia, “I felt so embarrassed (尴尬的).”
She laughed — not at me, but with me. “You’re human!” she said. “Remember the last time when I fell down in front of everyone?”
We laughed together. Then she added, “You know what? I actually like you more now. Before, you always seemed so perfect. Now I feel like I know the real you.”
For the first time, I didn’t pretend to be fine. I talked about my fears and embarrassing moments. She shared hers too. We felt closer than ever.
Now I understand something important. Trying to be perfect all the time is tiring.
But when I show my real self, I feel free.

Plastic production has been rising since the end of World War II. Plastic has greatly influenced modern life. It is widely used in clothing, electronic goods, cars and healthcare. In fact, plastic is not a single material. A study shows that 16,000 different chemicals are used in making plastics. When plastic ends up in nature, it can take hundreds of years to break down. It pollutes soil and water.
People have realized the plastic pollution problem. Thanks to modern recycling technology, we see products made from recycled plastic — from T-shirts to bags to building materials. This is the magic of turning waste plastic into valuable products.
Scientists are developing more and more effective methods to recycle waste plastic. For example, researchers break down plastics into reusable chemicals by using heat, pressure and a kind of special water. Another technology creates a plastic mix to break down waste plastic into oil for new plastics. Scientists also use electric current (电流) to turn waste plastic into high quality graphene (石墨烯). The graphene helps to develop new cancer treatments.
Recycling reduces the need to produce new plastic from oil. Besides, it helps to control environmental pollution. However, recycling plastic is not always easy. Different types of waste plastic must be separated and well cleaned. China has been stressing the importance of recycling and has taken action to improve it. Many schools try to encourage students to recycle properly. For example, students may get rewards, such as a small toy or a pencil, for putting empty bottles into small recycling machines. Factories are encouraged to use recycled materials in their products. With each recycled bottle, China moves one step closer to a future where nothing is truly wasted — everything is just waiting for its next use.
