From the first day he entered my junior-high classroom, Willard P. Franklin lived in his own world, staying away from his classmates and me. I smiled at him and tried to talk with him, but he never showed any interest in me or the class. My efforts to build a friendly relationship with him met with complete indifference. He was so unfriendly that even a “Good morning, Willard” from me in the hallway got only a cold reply. He liked to stay alone, unwilling to break down the wall of silence around him.
Shortly after Thanksgiving, we learned about the yearly Christmas collection for poor families in our school. “Christmas is a season of giving,” I told my students. “Some students may not have a happy holiday. Your donations will help us buy food, clothes and toys for those in need. We will start tomorrow.”
It was not until the next day that I realized almost everyone had forgotten it, except Willard. He walked to my desk and dug deep into his pockets. Carefully, he dropped two coins into the small box. “I don’t need milk for lunch,” he said in a low voice. He smiled for a moment, then returned to his seat.
That night, I took the money we had collected to the headmaster. I couldn’t help sharing what had happened. “I may be wrong, but I believe Willard might be getting ready to become part of the world around him,” I said. “Yes, it sounds hopeful,” he nodded. “Maybe he can be with us.” Then he added, “I received the list of the poorest families in our school not long ago, but I haven’t looked through it carefully. Those who need help most are on it. Take a look.” When I read down the list, I found Willard P. Franklin and his family at the very top.

When plastic (塑料) was invented around the 1860s, it was considered an amazing material. It was light, easy to make, long-lasting and cheap. It could be shaped into nearly any form people wanted. It was water-resistant (防水) and not easy to break. Besides, it weighed much less than metal or glass. It could protect goods from dirt and damage during transport. And it required less energy to produce compared with many traditional materials. It quickly replaced wood and other natural materials. Many people believed plastic would make life better. Back then, some people even saw plastic as an “environmental hero”.
Not surprisingly, plastic has now filled our lives. We can find it in bags, bottles, toothbrushes, gloves, phones, cars, houses... you name it. It is certainly convenient and has thousands of uses. Even so, it has slowly and quietly shown its dark side. Plastic waste was first seen in the oceans in the 1960s. Since then, it has become a danger to sea animals Some animals, such as whales, eat it by mistake and die. This “hero” kills more than 100,000 sea animals every year. By 2050, there could be even more plastic than fish in the sea by weight.
Plastic is also causing problems on land. Bears’ heads get stuck in plastic bottles. Cows mistake plastic bags for food! Even humans are eating plastic waste! On average, we eat 5g of plastic a week. That is a whole bank card! Tiny pieces of plastic are also found in the air we breathe. They can be carried around by the wind. There is even plastic “snow” at the North and South Poles (南北极). On “Planet Plastic”, we can’t avoid this kind of pollution.
Plastic waste is hard to deal with. It may take hundreds of years to break down. Therefore, hiding the waste in the ground doesn’t solve the problem. Burning it also produces thick smoke that causes air pollution.
Plastic makes life easier for many people, yet it brings long-lasting troubles to our planet. Our choices today change the world tomorrow. With no Planet B to turn to, we must think clearly and use plastic wisely.
56. Why did people once see plastic as an “environmental hero”?
A. Because it used natural materials like wood.
B. Because it was cheap and could replace natural materials.
C. Because it produced no waste and can protect the environment.
57. What does the underlined phrase “slowly and quietly shown its dark side” suggest?
A. Its harm has been found over time.
B. Its colour has become darker and darker.
C. People didn’t realize its harm until it was fully out of control.
58. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. A bank card used in our daily life.
B. The amount of plastic we eat each week.
C. Tiny pieces of plastic we breathe in every day.
59. What can we infer about plastic from the passage?
A. Plastic waste will be solved by technology.

Lacquer-ware (漆器) stands for great ancient Chinese hand-made culture. For thousands of years, ancient workers in workshops painted natural lacquer onto wooden objects to make them beautiful and sell them to customers. Ancient people widely used lacquer-ware in daily objects, including bowls, boxes and many other useful things. They were everywhere in the homes of common people and rich families at that time. However, such ancient cultural objects are easy to break after staying underground for a long time. Wet soil and tiny living things under the earth will slowly break their surface little by little.
However, some lacquer-ware was luckily stored safe underground for centuries. Scientists have found well-kept lacquer-ware pieces in several ancient tombs (坟墓). Several hidden facts help people keep them for hundreds of years. When they are placed deep underground, they can remain safe, although the weather keeps changing all the time. At the same time, living things can’t go in and affect the lacquer-ware. These pieces are kept away from outside air. Some plant remains inside tombs create a special chemical environment. The lacquer-ware pieces rot (腐蚀) very slowly in this special environment.
When being dug out of the ground, lacquer-ware ancient objects face new danger. In early digging work, workers did not have enough related experience. Plenty of valuable ancient objects got badly hurt because of sudden changes of temperature and wetness. Manpower was terribly needed to protect the field. Local government later solved this difficult problem. More field workers worked together and quickly changed environment around the tombs right after lacquer-ware was uncovered. They try their best to keep the temperature and humidity (湿度) the same to protect these weak treasures.
Now, modern technology helps protect these important cultural objects. Experts carefully record every detail of lacquer-ware, such as its color, shape and beautiful patterns. We make efforts to let more young people get to know this traditional art form in many different ways. For example, young people can learn about our great cultural treasure at school or in museums. They can also read books and watch videos about it. Through our efforts, the treasure won’t disappear in the world.
•Wet soil and tiny living things will lead to the break of the surface of these pieces.
•They got hurt because of outside environment after being dug out.
•Seriously 77 experience and manpower makes the situation worse.
•These pieces won’t be affected by the 78 around and the living things outside.

In Heilongjiang province, black soil is very valuable for growing food. With the help of Chen Yong, a teacher from China Agricultural (农业的) University, farmers in Jucheng village are trying a new planting way. In this new way, corn grows on both sides of the wide ridges (田垄), and wheat is planted in the middle. Because wheat is shorter than corn, all plants can get more fresh air and sunshine. Corn can almost produce as much grain (粒) as before. More importantly, farmers can get wheat from the same land besides corn.
Corn and wheat grow in different growing periods. Farmers have to choose the right plant kinds and proper numbers. This is the key to making them share the same land peacefully without competing for water and sunshine. They tested this way last year. It brought farmers more money, so they use this technology in more fields this year.
Chen’s team wants to make further progress. After wheat is collected, they hope to plant bean plants. Their goal is to get three harvests (丰收) from one piece of land in a year. Farmers also deal with dry plant parts better. They cut them into small pieces and mix them back into the soil. “We want to give them back to the land,” one farmer said. “It has given us so much.”
China Agricultural University has set up a research station in Zhaodong. It works to protect black soil and increase corn production. The university encourages its students to work and live in farm fields. Working with farmers helps students get real-world farming knowledge.
When farmers meet hard field problems, students pass the questions on to university teachers. Teachers and students work together to find answers. This helps new farming science move from labs (实验室) to real farmland. Good land and smart planting ways keep our food safe. Scientists and local farmers work together and bring hope for farming’s future.
81. Which plants have farmers grown in the new planting way?
82. Why do farmers choose the right plant kinds and numbers?
83. What’s the final purpose for farmers to cut and mix dry plant parts into the soil?
84. What is the writer’s feeling towards the future of farming in the text?
85. If you are a student of Chen Yong, do you prefer to learn farming in a classroom or in real fields? Why? (Give one reason in your own words)
