Liu Zheng, 33, comes from a poor family in Hebei Province. His parents grew grapes to make a living and looked after his sick grandmother. During his time at a private university, he did many jobs to support himself, like working at construction sites (建筑工地) and handing out notices. But he wasn’t interested in what he was learning in the university.
Liu had a big dream—to become a lawyer. He believed “knowledge changes life”. After graduating in 2015, he got a job as a guard at Peking University, making 3,000 yuan a month. Though he didn’t feel confident sometimes—security guards couldn’t enter the library and had to pay service fees in the canteen—he kept going. He audited law courses and learned from thrown-away textbooks.
In 2016, he started preparing for the national legal exam (法律考试) while studying for a part-time master’s degree. Later, he moved to the law school front desk, where students gave him notebooks and discussed law with him. Professors, like Zhang Shuanggen, gave him textbooks and invited him to courses. Professor Zhang wrote in a book: “May you become a confident and brave lawyer.”
Liu failed the exam five times but never gave up. He finally passed in 2022. This year, he started working at a top law firm (事务所) in Beijing. “Fighting for fairness makes me excited,” he said. His story has inspired many people, showing that hard work can make dreams come true.

12.What is the main purpose of the passage?

B.To introduce different jobs Liu Zheng did.
C.To explain how to prepare for legal exams.
D.To show that hard work helps achieve dreams.

A new app called Shanhai was developed in Changsha, Hunan Province. The Shanhai App puts tens of thousands of artifacts (历史文物) from around the world into one digital (数字的) space. This solves the problem that traditional museums can’t display (展示) a large number of artifacts because they don’t have enough room.
A “Museum Digital Intelligence Alliance (联盟)” was set up in 2024, with fourteen museums joining the group. It promises to let more people take part in creating stories for the museums in the digital world. “The Shanhai App helps the alliance connect with experts or creators in society who have an interest in museum culture,” said Hou Ningbin, the director of the Shaanxi History Museum. In this way, the app creates an open environment where anyone can share special cultural treasures anywhere, and tell stories together in the digital world.
For users, the Shanhai App is like a magic key to the world. People no longer need to travel far or buy expensive tickets to see a famous painting or an old pot. With a tap on the phone, they can view these treasures up close. It turns learning about history from a boring textbook into a fun, new experience. “If this app can succeed, it’ll connect people everywhere with China’s rich history and help people worldwide to gain a better understanding of China’s cultural treasures,” said Xu Jie, the director of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco.
In the future, the Shanhai App plans to create 3D models for hundreds of thousands of artifacts in museums. It will also work with universities and libraries to collect old documents, ancient writings, and research papers about these artifacts. Showing us that technology can help keep history alive, this app serves not only as a digital tool, but as a key that unlocks the door between China and the world.
13.Why is the Shanhai App developed?
A.To help make the artifacts more beautiful.
B.To help build more museums in Changsha.
C.To help solve the safety problem of museums.
D.To help show more artifacts in an online space.
14.Which of the following is TRUE about “Museum Digital Intelligence Alliance”?
A.It had 40 museum members in 2024.
B.It has strict rules for choosing app users.
C.It was set up to raise money for digital museums.
D.It allows people to create stories for museums online.
15.What does Xu Jie think of the Shanhai App?
A.It reduces the price of tickets for visitors.
B.It helps spread Chinese culture to the world.
C.It makes history textbooks more interesting.
D.It makes trips to museums more convenient.
16.What’s the passage mainly about?
A.How the Shanhai App keeps artifacts safe.
B.What 3D models the Shanhai App will create.
C.What kinds of museums the Shanhai App will replace.
D.How the Shanhai App changes the way to learn history.

Everyone knows that sleep is important for our health, but do you know that it can also help us learn a new language? A study found that brain activity during sleep can improve our memories.
In the study, 35 English speakers learnt a language called Mini Pinyin. 17 About half of those people learnt the language in the morning. They stayed awake and had a test later that day. The others learnt in the evening and then went to sleep in a lab. They were tested the next morning. 18
When we sleep, our brain goes through different phases (阶段). One of these is called REM sleep. 19 During this time, brain activity is very high and we often dream.
Another sleep phase is non-REM sleep, when brain activity is much lower. But during this time, our brain organizes and saves new information. This is thanks to two kinds of brain waves. They can move new information from the short-term memory part of the brain to the long-term memory part.
Scott Cousins worked on the study. He said the results showed sleep plays a key role in remembering complex information, such as a new language. 20 “Sleep is not just for us to have a rest. It’s an important time for the brain to change and grow,” he said.
So, if you want to improve your English skills, the secret might be going to bed!
A.He believed that sleep was very active and useful for our brain.
B.The researchers found that the people who slept after learning remembered much more.

Everyone knows that there are four skills in learning a language. They are listening, speaking, reading and writing. People usually think speaking is the most important. However, what’s the answer to the following questions? What do you have to do before you can speak? What does a child learn before he talks? What do we do before chatting? The answer is listening, of course!
In English learning, we don’t pay enough attention to listening. We have one mouth but two ears! So we should listen twice as much as we speak. Have you ever asked yourself, “How did I learn my own language?” In fact, you never really learned it at all—you just started speaking it. But this speaking is the result of hearing your native language for two or three years. Words go into your head and then they come out of your head. That is why listening to English as much as possible is so important to you now. The more English you put in, the more you’ll get out!
There are two pieces of advice about improving your listening. The first is that you shouldn’t worry if you don’t understand every word. The second is to be a good listener. To be a good listener, you should face the speaker, look at the speaker and let him or her know you are listening.
41.How many skills are there in learning a language?
42.What is the most important skill in learning a language according to the writer?
43.Why is listening to English as much as possible important to us?
44.Do you think you are a good language learner? What learning habits do you think are useful? Write 30 words or more.

9.Why did Liu Zheng do many jobs during his time at the private university?
A.To support his daily life. B.To learn skills.

12.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To describe the life of a university guard.

11.根据第三段中的“Professors, like Zhang Shuanggen, gave him textbooks and invited him to courses.”
12.根据最后一段中的“His story has inspired many people, showing that hard work can make dreams come true.”

A.It had 40 museum members in 2024.
B.It has strict rules for choosing app users.
C.It was set up to raise money for digital museums.

C.This language is based on Chinese, but it has similar grammar to that of English.

B选项“The researchers found that the people who slept after learning remembered much more.”
19.前文提到“One of these is called REM sleep.”,这里需要补充REM睡眠的相关细节。E选项“It usually first happens about 90 minutes after we fall asleep.”
A选项“He believed that sleep was very active and useful for our brain.” 因此填A。

41.There are four/4 skills./ Four./4. 42.Listening. 43.Because words go into our head and then they come out of our head. 44.Yes, I think I am a good language learner. I keep listening to English every day and read English articles in my free time. I also take notes of new words and try to use them in my daily talk. These habits help me make great progress.
首段明确提到“Everyone knows that there are four skills in learning a language. They are listening, speaking, reading and writing.”,直接提取数量即可。
43.第二段提到“Words go into your head and then they come out of your head. That is why listening to English as much as possible is so important to you now.”,整合句子得出原因。
Yes, I think I am a good language learner. I keep listening to English every day and read English articles in my free time.
