六、小作文(共15分)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am Li Hua, a Chinese exchange student. Upon noticing the Student Union’s recruitment notice for the Chinese summer camp, I am writing to express my enthusiasm for this role.
As a native Chinese speaker with fluent English proficiency, I am confident in bridging cultural and linguistic gaps between participants. My previous experience as a language tutor for international students has helped me improve my communication skills and cultural awareness. Additionally, organizing campus events in China has equipped me with teamwork and problem-solving abilities.
I would be grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the camp’s success.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
七、读后续写(共25分)
I made a detailed study plan and started to change my learning methods. Instead of blindly reciting and redoing questions, I began to analyze my mistakes carefully, noting down the reasons and summarizing key knowledge points. I asked teachers for help whenever I encountered difficulties, and Li Hua and I studied together after class, discussing problems and sharing learning skills. I also adjusted my schedule, ensuring enough rest to avoid burnout. Every day, I stuck to the plan firmly, step by step, no longer anxious about the results but focusing on every small progress.
With my continuous efforts, I finally made significant progress. In the next exam, my scores improved greatly, and the red marks on the paper were no longer sharp knives but a reminder of my hard work. When I saw the report, a big smile appeared on my face, and tears of joy rolled down. I told Li Hua the good news immediately, and he was as happy as I was. I realized that persistence and correct methods are the keys to success. From then on, I became more confident, knowing that as long as I keep going, I will eventually realize my dream.

SCIENCE NEEDS YOU!
Citizen science is a new movement which involves members of the public, either singly or in groups, working towards a common goal. Very often, citizen scientists collect, report or analyse data.
What makes a citizen scientist?
Anyone who contributes their time, effort and whatever resources they have to a scientific research project is a citizen scientist. They come from all walks of life — housewives, retirees, students, sports people, children. There’s no need for a formal or strong scientific background, just enthusiasm.
How to get involved?
If you have a particular hobby, interest or expertise there’s almost certainly a project you can join. Search online for citizen science projects and pick out the ones you like. It could be observing insects, migratory birds, even plate movements; all you have to do is to record and hand in observations. You can use your laptop or even your smartphone to do this — easy!
Here is an opportunity from NASA:
Space Cloud Watch What you’ll do
◆ Watch the sky at sunrise and sunset for noctilucent clouds (夜光云) and shoot them.
◆ Upload your photos and observations to a website to contribute to research on Earth’s middle atmosphere.
◆ Take notes when noctilucent clouds are absent, so you can report that too!
Requirements
◆ Time: 10-20 minutes
◆ Equipment: Camera, smartphone or GPS receiver
◆ Knowledge: No prior knowledge necessary
Will it ever be “real” science?
Citizen science is how real science started! Most of our early scientific discoveries were made by enthusiasts. Data collected by volunteers holds comparable scientific value to that collected by “real” scientists and as big data becomes more widespread, the tools to process it are becoming more user-friendly. So yes, citizen science is as real as it can be!
21. What is needed to become a citizen scientist?
A. A formal education. B. A strong enthusiasm. C. A scientific background. D. A professional career.
22. What does the Space Cloud Watch require participants to do?
A. Observe insects at sunrise. B. Take pictures of clouds.
C. Record cloud movements. D. Report data every week.
23. Who is the text most probably intended for?
A. Professional scientists. B. School headmasters. C. General public. D. Government officials.

A long time ago, on neighboring farms lived two brothers. But disagreement arose between them. It was the first serious one between them in 40 years of farming peacefully side by side. In the end, they fell apart.
One morning, a man with a carpenter’s toolbox came for some work. The elder brother said, “I just have a job for you. Look at that farm across the creek (河沟). My younger brother lives there. It was he who used his bulldozer (推土机) to dig the creek last week to upset me. So I want you to build me a fence, an 8-foot-high fence so I won’t see his place any more.” The carpenter smiled and said, “I see. I’ll try to do a wonderful job that satisfies you.” Then the elder brother left and went downtown.
At sunset when the farmer returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. The farmer’s jaw dropped open when he saw what the carpenter had done. To his surprise, there was no fence there at all! Instead, there was a bridge stretching from one side of the creek to the other! What a piece of work! He saw his younger brother coming up to him with the hands outstretching. “You are quite a man to build this bridge after all I have said and done to you! “ The brothers stood at each end of the bridge, and then they met in the middle, taking each other’s hands. When they turned to see the carpenter, he was lifting his toolbox on his shoulder, ready to leave. “No, wait! Stay a few days. I’ve a lot of other work for you,” said the elder brother. “I’d love to stay on,” the carpenter said, “but I have so many more bridges to build.”
24. What was the life like for the two brothers before the disagreement?
A. They lived a poor and miserable life.
B. They were friendly neighbors, helping each other.
C. They never spoke to each other.
D. They lived together on the same farm.

A. A Fine Piece of Work B. A Clever Carpenter
C. Disagreement between Two Brothers D. Two Brothers
27. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. The younger brother used his bulldozer to dig a creek.
B. The elder brother was angry with his younger brother at first.
C. The brothers were both satisfied with the carpenter’s work at last.
D. At first, the carpenter planned to build an 8-foot-high fence as asked to.

Cars could soon be communicating with each other using 5G to make drivers aware of upcoming dangers, scientists claim. The ultra-fast mobile Internet would allow for rapid information transmission and could make drivers aware of black ice, pot holes or other dangers up ahead.
Several car manufacturers are already integrating 5G into their vehicles, including as a tool to welcome the coming of self-driving vehicles. Experts believe the high-speed connection will also improve the reliability and capability of automated vehicles to the point where they will be safer than the manual cars being driven today. They predict the number of road traffic accidents — which according to the World Health Organization (WHO) account for more than 1.3 million deaths and up to 50 million people injured worldwide every year — will drop thoroughly as a result. Dr Dimitrios Liarokapis, a member of the research group, said: “With the help of 5G, an early warning system that alerts (给……报警) drivers is possible within the next few years. Cars that are close enough to the danger area will send warning messages to other cars around them using short-range communication technologies, but also to cars further away using 5G, fast and reliably. Then those cars will transmit the same information to cars near them and so on, forming a joined-up, multi-vehicle communication chain that stretches far and wide.”
Automotive giant Ford is already working on connected cars. Earlier this year it revealed its intention to fit 80 percent of its 2020 vehicles with technology that warns drivers about up-coming road accidents, bad weather and traffic jams. The system pools data from other connected road users, emergency services and the authorities and sends it from the cloud directly to the car. Alerts are shown on the car’s dashboard display warning the driver about what lies around the corner.
28. What can we expect of the cars in the future?
A. They will be more personalized. B. They may replace other vehicles.
C. They may be bigger. D. They will be safer.
29. What is the function of the communication chain?
A. To send warning messages. B. To collect drivers’ information.
C. To send the traffic situation to the police. D. To track other drivers.
30. How can 5G help reduce road accidents?
A. By offering practical safety programs. B. By offering the fast mobile Internet.
C. By helping WHO calculate traffic accidents. D. By helping drivers overcome dangers.
31. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Connected cars are equipped with 5G. B. Ford is the first producer to use 5G.
C. Cars of Ford are the most intelligent. D. Warning messages are shown on phones.

Human space exploration has made remarkable progress over the past decades. More than a technological achievement, space exploration has become a powerful driving force for scientific innovation and social progress. However, many people still question whether it is worthwhile to spend huge public resources on space programs.
In fact, space exploration brings far more benefits than people imagine. Firstly, it greatly promotes technological breakthroughs. Many high-tech technologies, including new materials, precise control systems and remote sensing technology, are first developed for space missions and then widely used in daily life. These technologies improve medical treatment, transportation safety and environmental monitoring, greatly benefiting ordinary people’s lives.
Secondly, space exploration helps humans better understand the earth and the universe. Through long-term observation from space stations, scientists can collect accurate data on climate change, natural disasters and resource distribution. This information plays a key role in protecting our planet and dealing with global environmental problems. In addition, continuous space exploration inspires young people’s interest in science and technology, cultivating more creative talents for the country’s future development.
Nevertheless, space exploration is faced with unavoidable challenges. It requires huge financial support and involves high risks of failure. Once a space mission fails, it will cause great economic loss. Moreover, some people argue that governments should focus more on solving poverty, education and medical problems on Earth rather than investing in distant space research.
In the long run, space exploration is a necessary investment for human progress. It not only expands human boundaries of knowledge, but also brings endless technological possibilities. Balancing social development and space research will help humans achieve more sustainable and advanced development in the future.
32. What do some people doubt about space exploration?
A. Its safety in future missions. B. Its value of huge resource investment.
C. Its influence on teenagers’ study. D. Its ability to improve daily technology.
33. What is one practical benefit of space technology?
A. It completely stops natural disasters. B. It improves various social service fields.
C. It reduces the cost of public education. D. It solves global poverty problems.
34. What challenge does space exploration face?
A. Lack of public scientific awareness. B. Outdated observation equipment.
C. High cost and potential failure risks. D. Limited support from young scientists.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards space exploration?
A. Negative B. Doubtful C. Cautious D. Supportive

Secrets for shopping healthier at the supermarket

Look for a short ingredient list
When you find a packaged food with a long list of ingredients on the label, just put it back on the shelf and look for a simpler version of the food. 37 . Check the list of ingredients every time, because a shorter ingredient list equals fewer added sugars and preservatives (防腐剂).
Learn what “organic” really means
38 . All organic farms must keep records and be inspected by officially recognized inspectors. Many supermarkets now carry some organic food, and farmers’ markets, health food stores, and individual farms are good sources of organic food.
39 .
If you feel like the food labels “natural” and “organic” can be exchanged, well that’s exactly what food companies want you to think. Although there’s no single set of requirements for products claiming to be natural, such labels are still supposed to be accurate. Farmers or food companies that use the “natural” label are not forced to be inspected as a condition of using the label.
Don’t get trapped by watery foods
Water is the magic ingredient in prepared foods, and if it’s first on the list of ingredients, it’s clear that there’s a long list of additives (添加剂) to follow. 40 . After all, soup does take a lot of water. Since oil and water don’t mix, it takes a bunch of additives to hold everything together.
A. Be cautious of “natural” labels
B. Purchase the food with “natural” labels.
C. Water is cheap, so the food industry favors it.
D. The organic label is earned through an officially approved process.

67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Since I stepped into Senior Two, life has been a non-stop cycle of homework, exams and fierce competition. Buried under piles of papers and burning the midnight oil almost every night, I kept telling myself that I must work harder to realize my dream of entering a top university. I tried every method known: making detailed timetables, reciting vocabulary till midnight, and redoing wrong questions. However, despite my persistent efforts, the results were far from satisfactory.
Time and time again, I received disappointing test scores. The red marks on the paper were like sharp knives, piercing my heart and making me feel completely defeated. One Friday afternoon, after getting yet another discouraging school report. I locked myself in my room. Tears rolled down my cheeks uncontrollably as I stared at the low grades. I began to doubt my own ability, wondering if I was actually smart enough to make it. “Maybe I should just give up,” I whispered to myself, feeling exhausted and hopeless.
Just when I was drowning in self-pity, my deskmate, Li Hua, noticed my absence from the classroom. He tracked me down at home and knocked gently on my door. When I finally opened it, with red and swollen eyes, he didn’t say a word of blame. Instead, he handed me a cup of hot milk and sat beside me quietly. After letting me calm down for a moment, he shared his own struggle with math, admitting that he had also wanted to quit many times. Then, looking me straight in the eyes, he said softly but firmly:
“The process is more important than the result. Keep going, and you will see the change sooner or later.” These simple yet powerful words were like a ray of sunshine, breaking through the dark clouds of my mind. They touched my heart deeply and pulled me out of the abyss of negativity. I took a deep breath, wiped away my tears, and silently made up my mind to hold on to my dream.
