Good Habits for High School Students
When it comes to essential habits that benefit high school students greatly, I firmly rank time management first, active reading second, and regular exercise third.
Time management absolutely tops the list. As students faced with heavy study tasks, proper time arrangement helps us make full use of every minute and balance study and rest efficiently. Active reading follows, which broadens our horizons and enriches our knowledge beyond textbooks. Last but not least, regular exercise strengthens our body, keeping us energetic and focused in daily study.
In short, these good habits complement each other and jointly help us improve ourselves and achieve steady progress in our high school life.
第二节(满分25分)
Her rough fingers moved quickly, sewing the seam smoothly. As I watched her focused face bathed in soft afternoon sunlight, I spotted the wrinkles on her face and age spots on her hands. A wave of guilt washed over me. I had always disliked her old-fashioned handiwork and complained about her mended clothes, never realizing each stitch held her deep love. Within minutes, the hole was perfectly mended, almost invisible. Grandma looked up with a gentle smile and handed my jacket back, telling me it was as good as new.
From that day on, the old sewing basket never stayed in the dark corner. I moved it to the brightest spot on my desk, regarding it as a precious treasure rather than a dusty burden. Every evening, I would accompany Grandma while she sewed quietly. I gradually learned to appreciate her delicate stitches and thoughtful repairs. Whenever my clothes were torn, I would turn to her happily. This ordinary wicker basket taught me a touching truth: true love lies not in fancy things, but in ordinary, warm gestures that quietly warm up my life.

W: Would you like to go to the cinema with me tonight? The new adventure movie is highly praised.
M: I’d love to, but I have to finish my work report before midnight. It’s due tomorrow morning.

W: I’ll be picking up books in the city library then. Let’s meet at the nearest subway station instead.
Text 3
W: It takes me 45 minutes to ride my bike to school every day.
M: Taking the No. 12 bus only needs 30 minutes. You can save a quarter of an hour.
Text 4
W: The school has released a new rule to limit after-school mobile phone use. What do you think of it?
M: It’s absolutely necessary. Too many students are distracted by phones during study time.
Text 5
M: The weather is so changeable recently. I planned a hiking trip this weekend.
W: The forecast says it will rain heavily on Saturday. We’d better cancel the outdoor plan.
Text 6
M: Our class needs more participants for the school sports meeting. Will you join the 800-meter race?
W: I’m afraid I can’t. I haven’t done any exercise for months, and I’m totally out of shape now. I might fall down on the track.
M: That’s a pity. I plan to sign up for the race and practice every evening. The teacher says active participation matters most.
W: Good luck to you! I’ll cheer for you on the sports field.
Text 7
M: The city government has released a new travel policy since the New Year. Do you know the details?
W: Yes. The core purpose is to advocate low-carbon travel and reduce urban carbon emissions. The government will launch a series of supportive measures in the near future.
M: What benefits can citizens enjoy exactly?
W: Starting next month, citizens can enjoy 50% discounts on all public transport including buses and subways during off-peak hours, aiming to encourage more people to abandon private cars.

Text 8
M: Can I help you?
W: Yes, I’ve lost my suitcase.
M: I’m afraid nothing has been handed in so far. Is there anything inside that can help identify it?
W: Well, my passport and all my money are in it. I also have a small address book with my name on the front. I’m Mary Smith, and I’m staying in Room 1440.
M: Where do you think you lost it?
W: After I checked in just now, I went to the ladies’ room. I put it beside me when I washed my hands. When I got to my room, I realized I’d left my suitcase behind, so I went back, but it was gone. I wondered if one of the cleaners had picked it up.
M: OK. Can you tell me more about the suitcase?
W: It’s not very wide, and there’s a small picture with the word “Hello” on it.
M: Leave it to me. I’ll check with the cleaners.
Text 9
M: I’ll never forget something that happened to me during a summer trip.
W: Really? What was it?
M: I was traveling with a friend called Eric. We had almost run out of money on our way back. Just then, a BMW stopped. The driver was a Dutch man heading north to Holland. He kindly offered us a ride. At first, we enjoyed the comfortable ride and chatted happily along the way. As it grew late, the driver looked a little tired since he had been driving for a long time.
W: So what did you do?
M: Eric and I took turns talking with him to keep him awake. We shared stories and laughed a lot. To stay safe, we also kept reminding him to take a short break now and then.
W: That sounds nice. Did you arrive safely?
M: Yes, we did. When we finally got to the destination, the driver thanked us for the company. And Eric was in such a good mood that he kept joking about the fun we had on the road.
W: How lucky you were!

My older brother Stephen was always extremely tall. In elementary school, he stood out in every class photo, his arms hanging awkwardly from shirts that could never keep up with his fast growth. Back then, he was just seen as unusually thin and tall, fitting in well with other kids in our neighborhood. No one labeled him as abnormal or treated him differently for his height.
Everything changed when he was 10. A doctor told him and our parents that he likely had Marfan syndrome, a genetic disorder affecting the cells that form the structure of the body. Suddenly, his physical difference was no longer just a quirk — it was firmly defined as a medical condition. His self-perception shifted dramatically as he began to see himself as abnormal.
The rise of gene-editing technology has brought back the debate over what “normal” truly means. Since the human-genome map was completed in 2003 and CRISPR was approved for medical use, we’ve gained the power to alter inherited personal traits. This forces us to ask: Is genetic variation something to be corrected, or is it simply a natural part of being human?
Victor McKusick, a pioneer in medical genetics, studied my brother’s case. He believed humans exist on a continuum of variation, not a strict divide between normal and abnormal. Yet society often pressures those who are different from usual to fit into general standards. For Stephen, his height became a daily struggle — ducking through doors, shrinking (缩) into seats, and avoiding crowds. He found peace in playing pool (台球), where his long arms and reach became an advantage, turning his physical awkwardness into grace.
Genes don’t define who we are. How we choose to understand and embrace human differences does. In an age of rapid genetic progress, we must remember that variation is what makes us human, not a flaw (缺点) to be fixed or erased.
24. Why was Stephen different from other children in his early years?
A. He was unusually tall for his age.
B. He had a serious genetic disease.
C. He was often laughed at by classmates.
D. He showed little interest in outdoor sports.
25. What does the underlined word “quirk” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. A strange habit. B. An unusual feature. C. A serious problem. D. A genetic variation.
26. What can we infer about the author’s attitude toward genetic variation?
A. Supportive of correcting it. B. Doubtful of its importance.
C. Unconcerned about its impact. D. Critical of labeling it as abnormal.
27. What is the text mainly talking about?
A. The development of gene-editing technology.
B. A personal story of living with Marfan syndrome.
C. The debate over defining “normal” in the genetic age.
D. The way to help people with physical differences fit in.
C
For a decade, I served on the jury of the Driehaus Prize, which honors architects of traditional and classical design. As Martin Pedersen noted, this prize is architecture’s answer to the well-known Pritzker Prize, yet it receives little media coverage. The reason is simple: the architectural mainstream cares little about traditional styles, even though they shape countless private homes, libraries, schools and public buildings across the country. Many excellent classical buildings win wide popularity among the public, but they are often ignored by the design circle.
Peter Pennoyer, the 2024 Driehaus winner, points out that the architectural world is crazy about the “next new thing” and pays no attention to history and context. This influential idea started with Le Corbusier’s 1923 book Towards an Architecture. He strongly argued that modern society should break away from the past and that old architectural rules developed over thousands of years were no longer useful. He believed all architectural values had been completely changed.
However, always looking for new styles has clear weaknesses. Architecture is a practical art guided by experience instead of just creative ideas. Good designs that stand the test of time should be passed down, while poor ones should be given up. Adopting untested new plans without thinking twice often leads to serious mistakes, safety problems and extremely high long-term maintenance costs.
Thankfully, architect Thomas Kligerman provides a wise new way. He successfully mixes traditional design with modern elements in his works. His Long Island house uses classic shingle walls but adds simple, clean modern details. Another lakeside home combines old Victorian siding with modern simple beauty. His works demonstrate that tradition and modernity can coexist harmoniously, creating attractive and timeless buildings that earn great public affection. This creative way also offers a new direction for the future development of architecture and reminds us that good design has nothing to do with being fashionable or old-fashioned.
28. What leads to the Driehaus Prize being overlooked by the media?
A. It fails to attract famous public figures.
B. It awards works with limited practical value.
C. It goes against the taste of mainstream designers.
D. It receives little acceptance from ordinary people.
29. What can be learned about Le Corbusier’s theory?
A. It values the application of ancient rules.
B. It encourages learning from past experience.
C. It advocates abandoning traditional architectural styles.
D. It stresses the importance of creative thinking alone.
30. What shortcoming may the constant pursuit of new styles bring?
A. Less attraction to the general public. B. Limited space for artistic expression.
C. Slow progress in architectural technology. D. Safety risks and costly maintenance.
31. What does the author try to show with Kligerman’s works?
A. Fashionable design proves more practical.
B. Traditional design needs urgent improvement.
C. Modern styles are gradually losing their appeal.
D. Combining old and new styles is a promising path.
D
Engineers at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) have created a flying robot that can also dive underwater. The robot is modeled after puffins (角嘴海雀) and similar birds, which move easily through both air and water. The new robot could help scientists study underwater areas that are hard to reach.
Developing such a robot took the team two-year-long efforts. Raphael Zufferey, the project leader, admitted the task appeared almost impossible at first. He and his team carried out plenty of research on birds able to both fly and swim. After numerous small-scale experiments, they managed to develop the flying-swimming robot.
One major difficulty lay in the great difference between air and water. Many birds fold their wings underwater, but the engineers expected the robot’s wings to work in both media. They tested various wing sizes and finally fixed the wingspan at about 34.5 inches. Its wings are constructed from tough, lightweight fabric and supported by flexible materials.
The robot flaps (挥动) its wings around five to six times per second in flight. When underwater, the same wings enable it to swim, with a motorized tail helping adjust its position. Weighing just over 250 grams, the robot stays balanced in water, neither sinking nor floating upward. To keep the robot light, researchers did not cover the body fully but made each inner part water-resistant.
The team did not copy every detail from birds. For example, the robot has no legs, as legs would add too much complexity. Instead, it uses wings to push off the water surface and take off. To achieve a smooth transition from water to air, the team spent much time perfecting the wing and tail angles. When breaking the water surface, its wings beat about ten times per second.
The robot has been tested in an MIT water tank and in Lake Geneva, Switzerland. It can leave the water and start flying in less than a second. Researchers believe the robot can monitor coral reefs, track fish and investigate harmful algae growth. Dr. Zufferey hopes future scientists can carry it in a backpack, send it to remote areas and collect data underwater.
32. What was a big challenge for the research team?
A. Reducing the cost of the robot.
B. Making wings fit two environments.
C. Finding suitable materials for the tail.
D. Testing the robot in different natural waters.
33. Why did the researchers leave the robot’s body uncovered?
A. To keep its weight under control.
B. To simplify its production process.
C. To help it move faster in the open air.
D. To make its structure easier to observe.
34. What is required for the robot’s take-off from water?
A. Full use of its specially designed legs.
B. A higher wing-flapping speed.
C. Help from additional supporting tools.
D. Immediate change of its body shape.
35. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To introduce a newly invented robot.
B. To explain the secrets of birds’ movement.
C. To show the importance of wildlife research.
D. To present ways of exploring underwater worlds.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Have you ever set a goal for yourself, like getting fit, making honor roll, or being picked for a team? Like lots of people, maybe you started out doing great, but then lost some of that drive and had trouble getting motivated again. 36 Everyone struggles with staying motivated and reaching their goals. Just look at how many people go on diets, lose weight, and then gain it back again!
The reality is that refocusing, changing, or making a new start on something, no matter how small, is a big deal. 37 With the right approach, you can definitely do it. So how do you stay motivated and on track with your goal? It all comes down to good planning, realistic expectations, and a stick-to-it attitude. Here’s what you need to do:
38 Your primary goal is the ultimate thing you’d like to see happen. For example, you may hope to make honor roll or join a sports team. It’s OK to dream big. That’s how people accomplish stuff. You just have to remember that the bigger the goal, the more work it takes to get there.
Make your goal specific. It’s easier to plan for and master a specific goal than a vague one. Let’s say your goal is to get fit. That’s pretty vague. Make it specific by defining what you want to achieve, why you want to get fit, and when you plan to reach it. 39
Make it realistic. People often abandon their goals because their expectations are unreasonable. Unrealistic goals usually lead to disappointment and failure, which kills motivation quickly.
Break it down. Making any change takes self-discipline. One effective way to reduce pressure is to break a big goal into small, manageable steps. 40 Reaching frequent, smaller goals gives you confidence and continuous motivation to keep going. So remember to reward yourself for every bit of small progress.
A. But it’s not impossible.
B. You are not alone in this situation.
C. Start by writing down your major goal.
D. Big dreams always require more time and support.
E. This helps you make a clear plan to reach your goal.
F. Most people fail to stick to their goals for lack of time.
G. Small steps prevent you from feeling defeated by huge tasks.

第二节 续写(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was in ninth grade, my grandma moved in with us. She brought along a worn wicker (柳条) sewing basket — its lid worn at the edges, filled with mixed threads, old needles, and a half-finished cloth quilt. It sat on the corner of my desk, taking up space I needed for textbooks and stationery. I found it dusty and old-fashioned, a thing from a time I didn’t care about. Whenever I saw it, I’d frown and push it aside, annoyed by how it clashed with my smooth laptop and colorful notebooks.
Grandma loved that basket. Every evening, she’d sit by the window, putting on her glasses to repair my torn school uniforms or sew little flowers on my socks. “These socks will last longer with some extra stitches (缝合),” she’d say with a smile. But I’d pay no attention to her, complaining that the hand-sewn flowers looked childish. “No one wears repaired clothes anymore, Grandma,” I’d say. “Just throw them away and buy new ones.” She never argued — she’d just sigh softly, fold the mended clothes neatly, and put the basket back into the corner.
One Wednesday afternoon, our class had a sudden outdoor field trip. I rushed home to get my jacket, only to find a hole at the seam (接缝). My mom was at work, and the tailor’s shop was closed. I panicked — my new jacket was my favorite, and I couldn’t stand to wear it with a hole. As I looked through my closet in disappointment, I saw Grandma’s wicker basket on the desk. Hesitantly, I lifted the lid. Inside, besides the threads and needles, there was a small card: “For my dear kiddo — repairing clothes is mending hearts.”
Just then, Grandma came back from the market, holding a bag of my favorite fruits. She saw my worried face and the torn jacket, and without a word, she sat down, took out a roll of thread matching the jacket’s color, and put the thread through the needle skillfully.
