Teaching Plan
Unit 5 Revealing Nature
A Journey of Discovery (Understanding ideas)
1. Basic Information
Senior High English Selective Compulsory 1
Time: 40 minutes
Students: Senior 2
2. Students Analysis
Students can find basic information in the text, but they cannot think deeply about the theme. Most students can only use simple sentences and they lack critical thinking and independent expression. Students are active in picture watching and group discussion.
3. Teaching Objectives
Language Competence
To grasp key words and exploration-related expressions.
To master the text structure of the exploration story.
Thinking Quality
To tell the differences between common travel and scientific exploration.
To understand the author’s attitude changes.
Cultural Awareness
To learn the spirit of scientific exploration: observation, patience and perseverance.
To build awareness of respecting and protecting nature.
4. Key and Difficult Points
Key Point: Sort out the author’s exploration process and text structure.
Difficult Point: Understand the meaning of discovery. Form correct views on human and nature.
5. Teaching Methods
Methods: Task-based teaching, situational teaching, group inquiry
6. Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Lead-in (0–6 mins)
Teacher shows some nature photos and creates a “class nature research team” situation. Teacher asks students the questions:
1.What species do you recognise in the picture?
S: Bird, horse, human, broad leaved tree, fish, crab, tortoise, snail, fern and so on.
2.What do we need to explore nature?
S1 : I think to explore nature, we need courage. And also, we need enough time.
S2 : Uh, exploration needs patience. And some basic knowledge too. Travel is just for fun, but exploration, it’s for finding the truth.
S3 : When we explore nature, we can see lots of new things. It makes us happy, really happy.
Teacher: Good job! Travel brings joy. Exploration brings discovery and growth.
Group Prediction about the text.
Group 1: We guess the writer may find some special animals in nature. And maybe he can find some natural rules too.
Group 2: We think he’ll meet some difficulties. Like bad weather, he may feel tired… and lonely sometimes.
Teacher: Your predictions fit the text well. Let’s read the text.
Step 2 While-reading (6–24 mins)
Task 1 Skimming — Text Structure
Teacher: What’s the main idea of the text?
S4: The writer wanted to explore nature at first. Then he met many difficulties. But he found some natural phenomena. Finally… finally he got some new feelings about exploration.
Teacher: Clear logic. We can use better words: initial wish, tough challenges, careful observation and spiritual gains.
Task 2 Scanning — Detailed Information
Teacher: please think about “why he is perseverant?”
S5: His love for nature keeps him going.
S6: Also, the beautiful views in nature… they are great. They can reward his hard work, so he insists on exploring.
Teacher: Maybe it was not only love. He insisted through loneliness and tiredness. This is perseverance. His reward includes both nature’s secrets and self-growth.
Task 3 Deep Thinking
Teacher: So class, what are the two layers of discovery?
S7: Uh… First, he found new species. And second I’m not sure… maybe secrets of nature.
S8: I agree. One is the outer nature we find, like new species, the other is… discovery of our true love for nature, right?
Teacher: All of you have your own understandings about the double meanings of the title. The second one is his inner self-improvement. This point is a little difficult to figure out. Meanwhile, some people said modern technology can replace manual field exploration. I think technology helps exploration. But perseverance and awe for nature can never be replaced.
Step 3 Post-reading
Teacher: Class, please discuss with your group members about your opinion on unlimited nature exploration. (24-34 mins)
Group 1:We think we can’t explore nature without limits. If we explore too much, it will destroy the balance of nature. That’s bad for the earth.
Group 2:Yeah, human exploration needs responsibility. We can study nature and know more about it, but we have to protect it at the same time, not just take from it.
Teacher: All of you did a great job. Now let’s make a short writing (40–50 words): What can we learn from this journey?(34-40 mins)
Group 3 : From this journey, we know real exploration needs patience and perseverance. If we have these good qualities, we can be as successful as Darwin. At the same time, nature is mysterious. We should respect it, not try to control it. And all discoveries need careful observation.
Group 4:This journey tells us discovery has two sides. We find secrets of nature outside and achieve self-growth inside. Just like our study journey, when we study our subjects, we are actually improving ourselves.
T:Wow, that point is wonderful. A journey can be used to describe other fields.
7.Blackboard Design
A Journey of Discovery
Purpose → Challenges → Findings → Reflection
Spirit: observation / patience / perseverance
Theme: Reveal Nature, Respect Nature
8. Teaching Reflection
The class has real student activities. The situational design increases learning interest. Layered tasks ensure full participation. But teacher should pay more attention to the students who can’t answer the deep thinking questions and give them more time and clues.
